Angelina Jolie plays doctorIf you’ve been praying that Angelina Jolie would change her mind about retiring, start the hallelujahs.
Variety reports that Jolie will play Dr. Kay Scarpetta, the razor-sharp medical examiner featured in lesbian author Patricia Cornwell’s best-selling books.
OK, that’s not Scarpetta. In fact, Dr. Scarpetta — in my mind at least — is nothing like Jolie. I always pictured the good doctor more like Cornwell herself: a 50-ish blonde.
My casting choice? Jodie Foster.
But since the Fox 2000 film won’t be based on a specific book — and since Cornwell has signed off on Jolie — I am willing to let go of my preconceptions about Dr. S. and let Angelina do her thing. Oh please, Angelina, do your thing.
I do hope the film includes Kay’s lesbian niece Lucy Farinelli. Lucy, who joined the series at age 10, now is an FBI agent whose sexual orientation is not exactly embraced by her fellow agents. Lucy is a dysfunctional genius who drinks too much and frequently jumps headlong into situations that could get her killed — but not because she’s a lesbian. Kristen Stewart would be perfect.
We’ll have more details about the film as they’re announced. Meanwhile, what do you think about Angelina Jolie as Scarpetta? Does the casting make you want to read Cornwell’s books? Who would be your Lucy? Submitted by on April 22, 2009 - 1:00pm. |

*jaw drops*
well, as a die hard angelina fan...i am simply thrilled.
i have only read post mortem and liked it a lot. i would love to continue reading the series, sad to say i'm not the reading type. i highly enjoyed that bbok though, and am very excited to see the outcome of the movie.
sadly i have nothing constructive to add to this, just that in my mind all the hot forensic women have an angelina jolie or mariska hargitay thing going for them. i am not igonorant, just.....obsessed with the two actresses. i know first hand that reality differs greatly from the fictious versions of all the forensic or law enforcement profession. my girlfriend is acutally a crime scene investigator so needless to say, i enjoy the fiction much more than the reality.
Wow!
Jolie can be my doctor any day!
I haven't read any Cornwell novels (just because they're not in a genre I usually dip into), but Angie in anything is fine by me! Though Jodie Foster would make for a great alternative.
I'm not surprised Cornwell signed off on Jolie - she is lesbian, after all! *grin*
say what?
I would have to say that angelina jolie is just about as far opposite of the kay scarpetta described in the books as you can get. but putting aside the physical discrepancies I do think she can portray the anguished, damaged, and emotionally brittle aspects of the character beautifully. That is if they decide to stay true to that.
I still have excerpts from the early books saved in my quote book. Some of the most truly compelling character development, before the series got so ridiculous I couldn't wrap my mind around it. can't wait to see if they can bring it to life for me.
"this is why emotions were bad - they made her think about inappropriate and unsettling things."
never read the book, but
Interesting casting for sure.
I've read most of the Scarpetta novels before, as majordoctorsam, said, they got so ridiculous, but I think I'd buy Jolie as Scarpetta- she did alright in Bone Collector & Taking Lives... And c'mon, it's Angelina Jolie.
As for Lucy, I always pictured someone more like Amber Tamblyn... someone who could pack a punch and land a chopper. Very sexy.
I've got to agree - I think
I've got to agree - I think Jodie Foster would be a much better Scarpetta than Angelina Jolie. Angelina Jolie is just ... wrong for the part. I'd really prefer if they casted someone who was mostly unknown as Scarpetta. This way, it just feels like "hey look! Angelina Jolie's gonna solve a case!"
"Most Lesbians are deliberate cowards. Usually they're too lazy or too full of themselves to go out and get themselves a man." (The Shadowy Sex, Hilary Hilton)
No!
No no no no no no no no...
I love Angelina Jolie. I loved the Scarpetta series, while it was new and original. I read about Jolie's casting earlier today, and before the movie's even been made, I'm severely let down, another adaptation goes awry...
I agree with what's been said before the novels have become formulaic, but I still read them, in fact am reading one right now. As a note though, Lucy's no longer an FBI agent, she set up her own agency thingy...and has a brain tumour...and is filthy rich...and apparently rather hot...with a mean right hook...
Lucy
whaaaaaaaaaat
this is SO not how i pictured dr. scarpetta. i'm such an avid reader of the series (although they lost a lot after 'the last precinct' when she switched to a third person narration), and i always thought cornwell was being a little narcisstic because the way she described scarpetta was how she looked on the back of every novel. i've got major doubts about this one, but it's about damn time they turned these books into movies. and i think they have to include lucy. at least they better - she's my fave character.
i'm interested in who will be playing marino - i always pictured someone like dennis franz or james gandolfini in my head. actually, now that i think about it, james gandolfini would be perfect.
I've read several books of
I think i am...
The films are not good or
eww
Mmmm
I've never read the series, but that lovely last picture of Angelina Jolie reminds me why I see every single movie she is in, regardless of what it is.

Angelina is a chamelion
Angelina can do blonde, if she needs to be blonde... She can pretty much play anything she wants... Girl, Interrupted, Gia, Tomb Raider, The Good Shepherd, A Mighty Heart, Mr & Mrs. Smith, Changeling... she's got the range to play anything, so let's not judge before we see...
I'm just excited if Scarpetta is being portrayed by someone as talented as Jolie.
Jolie is Scarpetta? Hmmm...
I read all of the Scarpetta novels up to Blow Fly (when it started looking as if either Patrician Cornwell had lost her mind or someone else entirely were writing the novels), and I must say, Angelina Jolie is definitely not the picture I had in mind for Cornwell's protagonist. Jodie Foster would be an excellent choice, I agree. But...Hollywood, eh?
Including Lucy would be a good move, since it would make for much conflict and friction onscreen between herself and Kay. But then, they'd probably have to make Jolie a bit older, depending... ah, Hollywood...
I always thought this would make a great TV series, don't you all think?

TV Series
If done right...yes. BUT...
When I heard that they were making a TV show on Kathy Reichs' series of Temp Brennan novels, I was super excited...Then I watched the first few episodes of Bones. A lot of people like the show, but it's NOTHING like the books. MAJOR Disapointment.
I agree, Blowfly was the worst...
Funnily enough
I find the Kathy Reichs books boring in the extreme, and much prefer the TV series, with its quirky characters. You're right that it's nothing at all like the books.
As for Blowfly, I couldn't agree more. That's when I stopped reading the books, although that one where they avert the nuclear disaster (or is that the same book?) was really the pits.
But Angelina Jolie? WRONG WRONG WRONG. Scarpetta is supposed to be a cool blonde of Northern Italian heritage. I think Jolie can act adequately, but there is just a point where it doesn't match.
Wah!
OMG! I *love* Angelina Jolie, and I *love* the Scarpetta novels, but THIS IS WRONG. Scarpetta in my head looks *nothing* like Angelina. Angelina is a great actress, I have full confidence in her abilities, but I cannot reconcile her with Scarpetta in any way. (And believe me, my mind has been attempting to do this in vain for several hours now since it showed up in my RSS feed from Ms. Cornwell's official site earlier today.)
I, too, always pictures Scarpetta looking a whole lot like Cornwell herself, and I just don't see Jodie Foster for the role either. (And that's saying something, I love Jodie something fierce in pretty much every movie she's ever made.) Personally, the only casting suggestion that comes to my mind is Jane Lynch, based solely on resemblance. Tall, thin, short blonde hair, not glamourous, but crazy intelligent. I know appearances isn't nearly everything, but I've never seen either Angelina or Jodie project the very particular kind of energy that Scarpetta has about her (in my head).
Either way, regardless of casting, I'll surely be there opening night. I don't know if I'll like it, but I'll support it on principle, because strong female leads in movies? YES please.
Jorja for me!
Love Angelina! Love Scarpetta! Do not love Angelina as Scarpetta! Nowhere near the picture I had in my head when reading the books.
Lucy should definately be in the movie though. She's such a huge part of who Scarpetta is. I always had an image of Jorja Fox when reading about Lucy! Think she could play that character really well too.
oh yes!
im sooo glad im not the only one who thinks jorja would be perfect as lucy! and i don't care if jolie and jorja as almost of the same age, make up and someone with the magic wand can do the trick! lucy should really be there, it will break my heart if she isnt...

Not so sure...
I could see Jolie as an older Lucy (a la later novels). she could totally handle the reckless intensity of Lucy's character. but yeah, not so sure about Kay Scarpetta. Jodie Foster would be great for the part, or I was also thinking Sigourney Weaver. She could pull off the tough professionalism/sensitivity thing well. Oh, and then Harrison Ford as Benton. Yeah, I've pretty much mapped this whole thing out. I'm so happy they're finally making a movie on the series! Took them long enough!
mixed feelings....
First off I have to say FINALLY!!!!! a KS MOVIE!! Not as big a fan of the Angelina as most seem to be,but she continues to get better. I loved "The Changeling". I could name many who I think would do a great job as Kay,but remember,it 's about box office draw.I hope the script is good (I've read all of Cornwell, including her bio of Mrs.Graham and the Ripper theory),and always pictured Patricia as Kay. It would be a complete travesty to not include Lucy as a major character(a deal breaker,I'd not watch,I'd be totally pissed at PC for not insisting on this). It's hard to cast a Lucy not knowing how old she'd be.....start reading if you have not,Postmortem is first.
Awesome Potential
I have been a Cornwell/Scarpetta fan for years, but this is the first I've heard of the movie project.
Although Jolie is nothing like I imagined for Scarpetta (I'm with you on imagining her as Cornwell, and with with forster being (visually) a better fit), this has the potential to be great. Lets hope it doesn't disapoint, like so many movie adaptations.
I agree though, the more important question is not who will play Kay, but who will play Lucy!
Underwhelmed
KStew
Lucy as Kristen Stewart pleeeease.
I haven't read the books nor do I care because they aren't my type, but Kristen seems like a good fit w/ the description you gave of her character.
thats not at all how i
Jolie is no Scarpetta...
I have read all of Patricia Cornwell's Scarpetta books, and Angelina Jolie, while a fine actress, is no Kay Scarpetta. In the books, Scarpetta is blond with large breasts, the exact opposite of Jolie. If Jodie Foster got a boob job, she'd be perfect.
Kristen Stewart is too young to play Lucy, she is in her 30s now, but I suppose they could do one of the earlier books, where she is still a teenager, then Kristen would be OK (KS is barely 18).
Actually, Kristen is 19. Not
holy c***p! same as almost
holy c***p! same as almost everyone here, i never would thought it would be jolie! but mayynn! i cant wait to see the movie!

Jolie *NOT* Dr. Scarpetta
Agree with Linster: Jolie is a bad choice. And I concur with her suggestion. Jodie Foster would make an intriguing Dr. Scarpetta.
I hope Angie drops out. I don't think I'd watch the film with her in it. Angie's last film The Changeling has made me realise how overrated she can be. Saw the trailer and thought, meh.
Jodie Foster is due for another intense action role. I loved her in The Brave One.
Pre-Mortem
I am just thrilled to hear that Kay Scarpetta will be coming off the pages and onto the silver screen. I would never have picked Angelina to play her but one never knows, it could be a brilliant choice. I hope the writers do the character justice.
Similar to the series Bones, that character does not truly resemble the Tempe Brennan from Kathy Reichs books. It does remain a great series nonetheless.
wish that was Megan fox
playing a doctor, cause if she was my doctor, i'd be fackin an illness to try to talk to her. swee talk her that is ;)
salsera
No no no no. Oh, and did I
No no no no. Oh, and did I mention NO?!
She is totally wrong for it. She looks nothing like Scarpetta as described in the books. Not annother book character destroyed by the young beauty myth. OK, maybe the film won't work with Kay being 50 and frumpy. But Angelina Jolie?
I am disgusted by this. Cornwall is clearly living out some fantasy here.
Yegh. Jolie would have been great as Scarpetta's niece Lucy. But not as Kay.
Jody Foster is alos not quite right (too pretty, too thin) but she'd be much better as she *looks* smart, rather than just pretty.
Amanda Burton in Silent Witness always looked exactly the way I imagined Scarpetta to be.

Scarpetta = Keaton
I own and have read all Scarpetta books, there were some I didn't like that much, but overall Scarpetta is still one of my favorite book characters. But Angelina Jolie playing her? No way. She'd be a perfect Lucy though.
To me Scarpetta was always very Diana Keaton like.
Let's hope that they won't revive the ridiculous boyfriend story. Can't wait to get more details, when the filming starts, scheduled release etc.

Cornwell wanted Foster, too
It's interesting that Patricia Cornwell wanted Jodie Foster to play Scarpetta, too, but went about it in a kind of creepy way - befriending someone who knew Jodie in order to try to get to her. This was a few years ago. Jodie steered a wide berth, perhaps sensing another lesbian stalker in the making (she's apparently had some trouble in that direction before).
I'm in the Jodie camp too, although I agree with dutchcloggie that Amanda Burton in Silent Witness (sigh!) was very Scarpetta-esque. Angie is a good actress, and gorgeous - thanks for that first pic! - but not right for this one, methinks.
Did she?
Angelina Scarpetta?
I loved the Scarpetta series up until it changed from first person to third person (I think it might have been in Blow Fly). Ever since then the series has completely changed perspective and is far more about the characters' personal lives than any crimes they might be solving.
But Angelina Jolie as Kay Scarpetta? Why, oh why?! I like Angelina, don't get me wrong, it's just that you at least have to cast some one who's something like the role!
I don't think Jolie is
two suggestions for lucy
rachel nichols
oh wow,
yes. Rachel Nichols, lov'd her in Alias!
It'll be just nice, if...
Scarpetta is razor-sharp....not sexy first
No way. Read all of Cornwell's Scarpetta Novels and as you noted, Scarpetta is razor sharp. I don't see her as exuding sex appeal. The choice of Jodie Foster is excellent and I agree with Kristen Stewart as Lucy. As far as Foster taking gay roles, Scarpetta is not a gay character. And she should have some good sex scenes with her man.
I'll watch no matter whoever plays it.
Angelina Jolie An Excellent Choice To Be Kay Scarpetta
www.myspace.com/lunakiss7.com
This summer I will have to get caught on my reading and Patricia Cornwell's novels are on my list, seriously. So finally they will put Kay Scarpetta on the big screen. If they couldn't get Jodie Foster they had to get the next big thing-Angelina Jolie. Just in case everyone forgot her beautiful and dark role of Amelia Dongahy in The Bone Collector with Denzel Washington, she can play Kay Scarpetta. Angelina Jolie is one of the most versatile and great actresses ever stepped into Hollywoood. So I will never underestimate her power of acting.
With a national bestseller novel making a leap to the big screen, you got to place a powerful and popular actress to make it just as equal as successful.
Yes, Angelina Jolie can pull Kay Scarpetta off. It was an excellent choice.
This picture is actress Paula Patton, the R&B/Soul RobinThicke's wife. She played in Deja Vu,Idelwild and Rush Hour 3. So it's not me.
JODIE FOSTER
would have been amazing and I hate to bad mouth patrica cornwell as im an avid fan but i think she only chose jolie so that people would watch it.
I dont think she'll be any good as Scarpetta
*sigh*
i also think jolie is wrong
i also think jolie is wrong for the part. clearly, there are 2 things on cornwell's mind (no, not those 2 things!)---a big name box office draw and the ability to find a lead actor who will want to do more scarpetta movies. she probably found her match in that regard as it would be a sure and steady paycheck for angelina.
would've liked someone a bit more gritty for the role. perhaps they will pick a great lucy and make it all right. just please make lucy a lesbian as in the books.
I will watch anyting she's
I will watch anyting she's in, dear *god*

Jolie is right
Michelle Pfeiffer
NO!! Angie can't play Kay!!!
HOWEVER, and I'm sure you will agree, I can see her playing Carrie Grethen! Lucy psychotic ex girlfriend.
I don't agree with Kristen Stewart playing Lucy either, but I don't have a suggestion either.
"No... she likes what I do..."
