ABC shuts its Pie Hole and cancels "Pushing Daisies"

Today is a sad day at the Pie Hole. Pushing Daisies, one of my favorite shows, will soon be, well, pushing daisies.

ABC has decided not to order any additional episodes beyond the 13 already shot for this season. Although the network didn’t use the word “canceled,” the deed is all but done. The cast and crew of Eli Stone and Dirty Sexy Money received the same news.

Pushing Daisies is, to borrow an expression from TV funerals, too good for this world. Dorothy Snarker summed up the show perfectly: “[It’s] like eating ice cream and petting puppies and spotting rainbows on a sunny day.”

But as sweet as it is, Pushing Daisies never descends into sappiness. Sure, Olive often bursts into song. But if I sang like Kristin Chenoweth, so would I.

And how can you not love a show in which Swoosie Kurtz, one half of a once-famous synchronized swimming duo, has an eye patch to match every outfit? (Ellen Greene plays the other half of the duo.)

Lest I leave you to start your weekend in despair, however, I do have some good news for fans of Pushing Daisies who also loved creator Bryan Fuller’s previous show, Wonderfalls. Episode 8 brings a crossover of sorts, with Beth Grant guest starring as Marianne Marie Beetle, muffin-maker and Olive’s nemesis.

Fuller also is talking about wrapping up the series with a two-hour movie and/or continuing Pushing Daisies in comic book form. I’d much rather see these wonderful characters in their brightly colored world every week, but I’ll take what I can get.

Are you as heartbroken as I am about this cancellation? Will you miss the Piemaker and his colorful friends? Do you think a comic book adaptation is a worthy successor to the TV series? Do we have any reason at all to watch ABC?

    Nooooooooooooooooooooo!!

This is incredibly sad news. Pushing Daisies was unlike anything else on tv. It was so colourful, so happy, musical and so innocent. I loved it. The 1st episode had me hooked and I swear I got a litte happy rush just watching it. How could they cancel it? I don't understand. It could only get better only thrive more.

I'm going to miss Ned, Chuck, Olive (*heart*), Emerson (*heart*) and the lovable aunts!! And DIGBY AND PIGBY!!

Awwww -no amount of tea tonight is going to cheer me up. :(

    I'm upset all over again.

    NO!

What a bitter sweet day; this is the worst cancellation since Arrested Development yet perhaps Ned touched it giving it new life (Arrested is getting it's movie!) and he got axed by the fickle hand of fate. Hopefuly we will get the movie that Bryan had planned. This day and age all of tv will be skating with the stars, or Paris Hilton's 15 Ways to be a Slut.

    OMG YES!!! =[

i loooved this show. I had never seen anything like it. It was like a fantasy world of CSI, or any other crime investigation show. This show was so amazing. The cast, the costumes, the sets, and everything else about it was just great. i have no idea why ABC is cutting all these good shows (even though i only really watched this one). it saddens me. I'll truly miss this show as one the best and most creative i've seen in a long time.

    and when i said "omg

and when i said "omg yess!!!", i was answering the question at the end of the article:

"Will you miss the Piemaker and his colorful friends?"

    OMG YES.

    *Sobs*

That's just not right. Pushing Daisies AND Eli Stone are getting cancelled? I realize that Pushing Daisies is no Dead Like Me and Eli Stone is no Joan of Arcadia, but nonetheless, they are what I have left and they are being taken away from me! :( God, I hope Dollhouse is good.

    GASP.  Maryianne Marie

GASP.  Maryianne Marie Beetle!  Muffin Buffalo!  Wouldn't she recognize Ned?  Does this mean that Karen Tyler has an unrelated twin who lives in a nunnery?  And Yvette, the housekeeper!  Oh god, it's too meta.

    I can't believe...

I just can't believe this is happening to Bryan Fuller again! He is a true genius  and apparently his shows are too brilliant to keep on the air! Dead Like Me, Wonderfalls and now this. Pushing Daisies maybe was not the best (since it's a relative term) show on the tv,  but it was definitely the most original one. I'm just so disappointed , I'm hoping that Dollhouse won't be ruined by F*x. That's if it isn't already with re-shooting the pilot and all... I hate all the U.S. networks they really don't get the "art of the tv".

    double agreement

US stations chose ratings based on teh LCD, rather than encouyrage people to enjoygood quality ( or better ) they ram bisexual twins down ourpie hole expecting us to be thrilled that incest is the new fashion.

Yes May the Dollhouse remain outside the clutches of stupid Fox xontrols, and let it have a long rich life.

    NOOOO!!!!!

^That is exactly what I screamed when I read this. Its a good thing my roommate isn't home. How can they possibly do this? It is the greatest show on TV right now! Its so much freaking better than Private Practice, Grey's Anatomy, Ugly Betty, Desperate Housewives, and I am damn well sure it is better than the Tila Tequila sequel that involves incestuous bisexuals. How can it possibly be that there is all the filth that is on Vh1 and MTV, but we can't have this simple quaint little show, that does nothing more than make you say "aw" instead of making you say "SLUT". I hate this. I really do. Nothing can sum up my anger right now in writing. If I had to try I would say its a worse feeling than when Alicia Sacramone did nearly perfect on the vault in the Olympics, didn't place, while I think some Chinese girl fell down when she landed and got a better score than her. The anger I am feeling right now is even worse than that. Screw you ABC. You are officially the worst channel on television and I am now banning you (after Pushing Daisies ends of course).

    Disappointed But Not Surprised

Not to defend ABC or anything, but was there anyone who watched Pushing Daisies' debut last year who didn't think "this is an incredible show, but it's going to be cancelled soon?" I know I did. Not only was PD too quirky and, perhaps, too smart for the average audience, the production costs for the show must have been ridiculous. Without considerable success in the advertising demographic, Pushing Daisies was doomed to fail.

I hope that Fuller gets to close out the show as he wants and that there's another network that's willing to invest in his brilliance.

    I couldn't agree more.

I somehow knew it would happen and I always thought people didn't watch PD because it was too good. It is too good. I wonder how can it be sooooo hard or boring to watch something more sophisticated, poetical, smart, touching...

    People just like crap.

    Dang fool ABC

It's a sad day to hear we will be deprived of both Pushing Daisies AND Eli Stone.  I guess that wholesome shows about good people just cannot make it in this world.

The color and 'narration' in Pushing Daisies was like a childhood book being read out loud.  I'm a big KC fan so to have her on TV was a blessing.  Eli Stone just was wonderful especially with Loretta Devine.

I loved Joan of Arcadia and Touched by an Angel so you can guess where my sentiments lie.  I'm a sap for those mushy shows.

CBS likely knocked me off by killing of Jim on Ghost Whisperer.  What is the world coming to?

    Detached

I love this show.  It's quirky, funny, original and interesting - plus, I love the characters.  I heard rumours that the Pie Hole was facing foreclosure, so I've slowly begun to detach myself from it.

Just like Wonderfalls and dead like me, the show was too smart for its own good.  I'll just have to buy the DVD's to add to my Bryan Fuller-cancelled too soon collection.

*LETS OUT WHOLLY PRIMAL SCREAM OF TERROR AND LOSS*

I'm at a loss for words... Okay, I love TV-I'll admit that right now -I mean, I'll watch just about anything and get hooked into anything that is remotely interesting as long as it isn't trashy or on the WB (I'm trying to cut down, I really am). But Pushing Daisies, next to LOST & 30 Rock, is what really made TV worth existing, in my opinion. If I had to pick ONE show to keep and I couldn't watch anything else ever again it would be PD.

ABC can go fudge themselves as far as I'm concerned, because after the unreasonable and imbasillious firing of Brooke Smith and now this it's quite possible I may have lost all respect for the network. One stupid decision after another has caused them to lose sight of what made them a superior unit and it's more than disappointing, it's heartbreaking.

I will go on watching ABC because I am a TV addict and let's face it, I have no will power, but I will protest outside the studios with anyone who's willing to come with me and stand up for this injustice!

ABC is dead to me. And not even Ned can't revive this one.

So I am so sad that this show is being cancelled. I heard rumors of it but I did not believe it. I think the show had a good run and we were just getting into the characters lives.  I'll take a comic book or movie to just get a great ending.

    More proof that ABC

More proof that ABC executives wouldn't know creative programing if they tripped over it. For a little while there they looked like they might just be brave enough to be just a little bit cutting edge. "Callica" on GA handled with sensitivity, quirky shows like Daisies given a second season. But alas no, in keeping with the rodent-like groundhogs that they truly are, they caught sight of their shadows and ran back to nice safe, below average television. A victory for mediocrity once again!

    say it isn't so

I heard the rumors about Bryan Fuller going back to a different show, so I'm not super surprised. Yet I am upset about it b/c I loved this show, there was nothing on tv quite like it. Plus Anna Friel and Kristin Chenoweth both rock my world!

    I am so sad

Every show I like is always cancelled which is why I don't really watch tv anymore...

I should have known that it was going to be cancelled when my dad said it was stupid. He likes everything toilet humor and very stupid. Anything intelligent he can't watch. Damn. I really hope that they do continue the story in comic book form and don't leave us hanging like they did with the Arrested Development finale. That would be cruel.

effectively ruins my wednesday nights, dvr PD, watch bones, then the time shifted PD and wrap it all up with the amazing dirty sexy money (no one else here will miss it, c'mon!?!?!?) now what am i going to do....but i'm not at all surprised, there is literally no show w/the ratings that these 3 have that has made it past a 2nd season. most get cancelled after one, but the writers strike last year gave these shows a second chance at life, but at the same time killed all momentum for them...
    val's picture

Another reason why ABC is going down...

First the Grey's Anatomy/Brooke Smith debacle...

now they decide to cancel my beloved "Pushing Daisies" too??? Why, oh why, ABC?!?

It's such a shame because there is absolutely nothing like it on television now. "Pushing Daisies" was something I looked forward to every week - such creativity, the vibrant colors, rapid dialogue, interesting plots, and its ability to carry storylines about murder mysteries with such a light mood. I agree with everyone else: the decent shows with promise are always the first to get cancelled, unfortunate as it is. I was afraid it wouldn't make it very far past the writer's strike. Just when I thought they were safe, they get the undeserving axe. :(

    ABC

What's wrong with them? First, the Grey's anatomy thing, and now Pushing Daisies ...and Dirty Sexy Money. I love this show, it was just great!  and now what's left on tv?

    ABC...

ABC really knows how to kick a person when they are down... first they screw around with Grey's Anatomy and now they cancel 2 of my favorite shows:  Pushing Daisies and Eli Stone. I never watched Dirty, Sexy Money, so I can't comment on that one.

I too was a huge fan of Wonderfalls which got the axe way too soon as well.  It irks me to invest time into such great shows, only to have them given the heave-ho while there are numerous other shows on the air that defy logic as to why they are even still on: Knight Rider (as an example). Or what about trash like 'A Double Shot At Love' this show that takes over from the lame ass 'Shot At Love' and has bisexual twins trying to find love? UGH! With the heads of programming at the networks making such terrible decisions is it any wonder that ratings for most shows are below what they were a year ago?

With fewer and fewer standout shows (with a few exceptions), I have found myself turning more and more to cable (or even internet shows) to satisfy my hunger for good entertainment. It would seem that the once touted "appointment television" appears to be headed for extinction.
