A new web series reflects reality for UK lesbiansI don’t know about you, but I’ve been a little disconsolate about Anyone But Me being over for the season.
But Faye Hughes’ Inner Sanctum production company may be about to rescue us from the no-lesbians-on-screen doldrums with a new UK online lesbian TV series, Far Out.
Far Out tells the story of a group of friends living in London. Hughes set out to develop a show about contemporary lesbian life featuring ordinary lesbians in realistic situations. “With Far Out, I wanted to show what life for gay women is really like," Hughes said. "That we have real and valid relationships, that we can be butch dykes or girly girls or anything in between, that we have kids, responsible jobs, families, ambitions and aspirations. We can honestly say that we are telling our story from experience, this isn’t a group of men sat in a board room making a series for money.” Hughes pitched the script to a number of broadcasters, including the BBC Writers Room, before finally raising the money to launch the show online. Here’s the just-released teaser. We don’t know much about the storyline yet, but the ensemble looks like fun.
Grace, for example, is an art/design graduate, temping to pay her bills and trying to figure out what to do with her life. All she knows for sure is that she “wants to get laid.” I can so relate. Wait, that came out wrong.
Kat (played by Hughes) is a music journalist and Grace’s traveling buddy. Although she had a boyfriend when she started her travels, she’s now in a relationship with Jen, an architect.
Jen wears Chucks with her suits, so I fully expect to have a major crush on her. You can check out the other characters’ bios by clicking on their names on the Cast page.
The actor credits seem to be missing, but hopefully will show up soon — especially since they’re working for free at the moment. Shooting for the first episode just wrapped, so we should have more news about Far Out in the near future. Meanwhile, you can keep up with progress on Far Out’s Facebook and MySpace pages as well as show’s official site. The pilot will be online in September. Are you all in for Far Out? UK readers, what do you think of this show’s potential? Submitted by on July 6, 2009 - 1:00pm. |

Gasp!
*ahem* This looks interesting. Thanks for posting about it. Though September is such a long wait!
Wow
Looks a bit over the top.
ill give it a chance..
Ive found online series and books are far more representative of actual lesbians than tv seems to be so ill give this series a watch when it comes out. Ive really gotten into web shows recently, anyone but me has me hooked and i started watching that finding simone or something about online dating, thats quite funny. I recommend everyone goes on their facebook and suggests it to all the lezzers on their friend lists, that way if its any good it'll have enough people watching to keep it going and get funding and stuff, only way people hear about webseries and is through word of mouth and people pushing it on fb and suchlike!

yea
While Grace the tall skinny
While Grace the tall skinny faux-hawked artist who just wants to get laid is a little reminiscent of Shane for me, I am interested in the show. I do dislike that any tall skinny brunette is automatically seen as trying to be a lesbian character, and hate that its where my mind goes... but 6 seasons of watching one actress do it very well makes it memorable I suppose.
I hope this TV show delivers and stays grounded. With someone putting in their own money instead of having a studio budget and people to answer to, I feel as though it will :)

hope it works
I think its really cool that after trying to pitch this to the big-wig tv bosses the show still got made.
hope it works out
I want it...
NOW! Please
I cant wait :D
I also hope that the new BBC's drama called...... erm Lip Service, that was it, will be good
it is about time
i hope the BBC will pick it up at some point, they're usually cool about these sorta things!!!!
well it doesn't seem to be too over dramatised as the cast blog described surrey as the apitamy of domesticity and i think they hit the nail on the head there!
i dunno, just wanna see how it turns out. quite excited though, maybe 'first out' will become the new planet!

channel 4
I think channel 4 will be the most likely to pick it up if it gets a following. Hoping it does go well seems like a good story and the cast look great.

someone needs to say it
this looks like a british version of the L Word.
it's got a shane, a bette and tina, and most likely an alice too.
nevertheless, i miss the l word and this could be a good replacement with all new drama to get pissed at.
not gonna lie, i will watch.
Does anyone know where I can

This looks awesome!
I know we are all feeling a little let down by the rather drab end to The L Word and so what better way to get over this by watching a new show, a less sensationalised one at that!
I'm really looking forward to Far Out and the growth of all of the characters. I really hope TV channels will also take notice, there isn't enough lesbian media out there and people like these guys are trying hard to change this.
Watch and learn Channel 4! (A personal dig for dropping Sugar Rush) ;-)
The trailer is so cheesy it
The trailer is so cheesy it makes me want to kill myself.
Okay, so that was a little extreme, but you get what I mean.
Almost makes me not want to even bother giving it a try.

You know you want to.Far Out TV - You made our day!
Evening All,
We the producers of FarOut wanted to say a huge Thank You to everyone who has shown support and been so enthusiastic about the pilot and the series. We are a small scale production team, really just a handful of people all working for free because we believe that some accurate representation of the lesbian community is needed and that you ladies deserve a decent, honest and entertaining show to watch.
We are all working day jobs, and are paying to make this pilot out of our own pockets which is hugely stressful. But we believe in what we are doing, and the reasons we are making it and it is really great to hear people are excited about seeing it.
We finished filming on Sunday, absolutely exhausted but all feeling that we have created something pretty special. We are doingour best to get stuff on our website, and make press contacts but we dont have a budget for press releases or press stunts and are relying on word of mouth. So you guys are helping us out no end!
Please keep checking the site, telling your friends about it and spreading the word. We promise when you see the pilot you wont be disappointed,
Love to you all
