Eight gay women are blogging to battle Prop. 8Everybody’s doing it. Whether you live in California or not, you know that Proposition 8 is on the November ballot — an effort by anti-gay groups to overturn the right of same-sex couples to marry. Couples like this one, to be exact.
Del Martin and Phyllis Lyon, June 16, 2008 The good news is that foes of Proposition 8 have come out of the woodwork to help defeat the measure. We’ve told you about the great PSAs by Margaret Cho, Molly Ringwald, Ellen DeGeneres and others. We’ve rejoiced at significant financial support from Stephen Spielberg, Kate Capshaw and Brad Pitt.
MadTV joined in last week with a trailer featuring Lucy and Ethel, admitting that, had gay marriage been legal when they were around, they would’ve gotten married “lickety split.” (“You do the split and I’ll do the lickety,” Ethel said.) And crackle.com released two very funny videos addressing professed objections to same sex marriage.
Now, some of our own have stepped up to raise awareness — and funds — to defeat Proposition 8. Recently, AfterEllen.com blogger GraceChu saw people on her Facebook account campaigning for the hate measure’s passage. Fighting her first instinct to do a mass deletion, Grace came up with the idea to get eight influential lesbian bloggers (including our own Dorothy Snarker) to band together to raise $8,000 in eight days. Today, 8 Against 8 was born. Meet the eight against hate: Grace Chu and Grace Rosen from Grace the Spot, Dorothy Snarker from Dorothy Surrenders, Lori Hahn from Hahn at Home, Kelly Leszczynski from The Lesbian Lifestyle, Pam Spaulding from Pam's House Blend, Sinclair from Sugarbutch Chronicles, Riese from This Girl Called Automatic Win and Renee Gannon from Lesbiatopia. If you are a regular reader of any or all of these blogs, you know that often the women have little more in common than sexual orientation. But on Proposition 8, these wordilicious lesbians agree: Just say no. If you don’t live in California, you may be asking what all this has to do with you. Spend some time on any of the 8 Against 8 blogs to learn why it matters. I live in Texas and am pretty sure we’ll see a ban on big belt buckles before anyone even talks about letting us queer folks get married. But watching the video at the end of Ms. Snarker’s post made me dust off my debit card and send a little cash to the cause. Let’s save marriage — the right way. Such Peer Pressure!
In truth, you don't even need to twist my arm. We cannot take a step backwards when it comes to gay marriage and if funding is needed to fight against Proposition 8, well then...
Could you please pass the lentils, Jennifer?
;-)
Heck, H, I owe you a proper
Awesome PSA´s!!!!!!
I´ll never have sex again since I´m bi, overweighted and I´m sure I´m not getting any younger.. I loved that one!!! Are all the reasons for opposing
same-sexmarriage that.... ridiculous???PS: This might sound stupid but I´ve been wondering this: LGBT people are considered second classs citizens right? As in "we are less worthy" than heterosexual people. So that leaves me wondering, if we are "less" than they are, how come WE make THEIR marriages less worthy?! If they really believe we are a different class, a lesser kind of beings how come we are able to threaten everything they hold sacred? They shouldn´t worry about that right?!
(THIS IS A LEGITIMATE DOUBT I´VE HAD, PLEASE EXCUSE MY IGNORANCE)
i think Riese said it best...
"..we're all broke now anyway, what's another $5-$500 bucks? That's what I tell myself every night when I order takeout." please everyone donate..just a few dollars for a basic human right
Awesome.
BTW If you live in Florida
Vote No on Prop/Amendment 2 it is similar to prop 8...
Voting NO on 8
Riese!
Prop 8
I live in Cali and I'm doing what I can to raise awareness. I was at a booth informing people, passing out fliers, buttons, talking to friends, and am all over the internet-group world about it.

Riese
I can't believe I've never heard of Riese or her blog before today. She is indeed, as advertised, made of win.
And seriously folks, we've got to beat this thing. Gay rights opponents know this could set us back years if it's passed, and that's why they're pumping money into the campaign. (Seriously, why do they care so much? It flummoxes me.) We've got to match them. I've donated my twenty-five dollars.
The world is watching with anticipation!
The world is watching your November elections with anticipation - I hope the USA can restore a little bit of its international glory by doing the right thing :-)
Many cultural trends come from the USA and even though we have our own same sex union here in the UK (called civil partnership, because they backed out of calling it marriage for fear that it would shock people), if California goes back on the right for same sex couples to get married, it would certainly make us feel that little bit more insecure about our own rights.

Double post, sorry ... But since I had to edit anyway, I can elaborate a little. I posted a similar message as the one above at Grace Chu's blog (http://gracethespot.com/?p=489#comment-3328) and have just received a reply from her:
"I will let EQCA know ASAP about the glitch in their donation page. I hope to get this resolved. A donor from South Africa had the same issue."
So hopefully we "aliens" can get to donate after all -- I just hope that it won't screw up forever my being able to get a visa to the US ...;_)
