Fifty and fabulous in 2008

One of my childhood memories is a time at my cousin's 12th birthday party when I thoughtfully said, "Twelve is such a ripe old age." I don't know what led to that pronouncement, but I remember it often, even several multiples of 12 later. Age is like that. Each milestone seems far away, then one day you realize that a lot of them are behind you. It's not a bad thing — older really is better — it's just surprising. A few weeks ago, one of America's favorite children reached one of those milestones when Caroline Kennedy turned 50.

Kennedy certainly has accomplished a lot in her adulthood, but to many of us, she always will be JFK's little girl. And "Sweet Caroline."

Kennedy was on the cover of AARP the Magazine this month, along with a prediction that 2008 will "forever change the image of 50." Why? Because some big names in entertainment — including a few sex symbols — will reach the half-century mark next year. Some of our favorite beauties are on the list.

Ellen DeGeneres (January 26)

In typical Ellen fashion, DeGeneres' approach to the big day is to plan a birthday bash on her show, Ellen. "I have lots of plans for my birthday," she says, "and they include a piñata and Tim Conway." Not my first choices, but Ellen is anything but predictable. Just ask Iggy.

Sharon Stone (March 10)

She hates exercise and loves dark chocolate, but has never shied away from talking about growing older. I saw Stone in person a couple of years ago at the Dallas Black Tie Dinner and, trust me, she doesn't need Photoshop to look hot. Here she is with Joan Jett at the 2007 L.A. Pride fest:

Michelle Pfeiffer (April 29)

Pfeiffer quit smoking and started using sunscreen to ward off aging — and doubtless is much more optimistic about growing older than was her character Lamia in Stardust. To witness the beauty of aging gracefully, Sarah and Lori's highlight reel of Pfeiffer's movie moments bears re-watching.

Madonna (August 16)

The Material Girl will release a CD next year and may launch at "Madonna at 50" tour next summer. At my first Madonna concert, I was mesmerized by how incredibly buff her body was. I am still in awe of her.

Rounding out AARP's list are Prince and Viggo Mortensen (yawn). But the magazine left out a few ladies who are close to the hearts of AfterEllen.com readers. Never fear, I always am willing to make the sacrifice of searching through pictures of beautiful women for your sake. Someone has to do it. I will leave the details of how these women will celebrate to your fertile imagination.

Miranda Richardson (March 3)

Holly Hunter (March 20)

Annette Bening (May 29)

Angela Bassett (August 16)

Jennifer Tilly (September 16)

Marg Helgenberger (November 16)

Truthfully, several other stunners are turning 50 next year, too. But if I listed all of them, what excuse would you have for scouring the Internet to find them? Who's your favorite "over 50" lady? How would you like to celebrate her birthday with her?

    fifty isn't old...

I used to think that fifty was the age where you are old, but looking at ellen and all the other woman on that list fifty seems quite young to me. every time I watch Ellen's show and see her play games and do crazy stuff I think to myself, this woman can't possible be 49. no way!

I wish I would look as good as Michelle Pfeiffer does at 50... *sigh* to me, anette benning is the only woman on that list that actually looks her age, not that that's a bad thing.

other women who turn fifty next year: andie macdowell and jamie lee curtis

    50

I'll be 50 in one month and four years, unless I die in a fiery car crash or a loved one stabs me in my sleep. I don't think that aging is as scary as what it seemed to be when I was a kid. Or maybe I'm just delusional because now it's me. Who cares and either way, the thing is, you either get old or you die young. I prefer the former to the latter.
Presently I'm debating whether or not I'm going to dye my hair at some point. Part of me wants to just go white like Emmylou Harris, and part of me isn't ready to look older than I have to, and part of me is wondering why the other parts have issues.

    50

I have a couple of years to go. I think it really all depends on how you feel in yourself.  I have been blessed with dark hair which is only now just starting to grey but in a highlighted streaky way which others would pay for.  If I had been my sister I would have raced to the hair dressers (as she did) and coloured everything.

    Fabulous!

These women are all fabulous at (almost)50!

I think it's great when women settle into "who they are" as they get older...
When they realize that their beauty comes from other aspects of their being and their spirit shines through.

I love this Annie Leibovitz photo of Gwyneth Paltrow and her mother (Blythe Danner):

There may be a difference in age, but they are both undeniably beautiful.

    it's about time

for women over the age of 21 to get some love in hollywood. now all the old guys i.e, jack, clint, morgan, harrison, etc. will have to step aside (not that they're not good) and make way for the ladies. angela and holly look great! and the rest of the women are definitely fab... i have to admit that i've had a crush on marg since her china beach days...

my hope for 08 is less brittney and more jodie. i'm just puttin that out there.

    I never thought 50 was

I never thought 50 was old.  Let me qualify that statement.  I've never, in any way, thought 50 was old...for other poeple.  But the older I get, the older I feel.  While I am still not quite yet anywhere near the 50 mark  (yet it feels like it's just around the corner), I feel like *I*, and I only, will be old when I'm 50.  But I feel old now, so I don't really think that means anything.  I look at women in their 60's, like Helen Mirren & Meryl Streep & Catherine Deneuve and I am in awe of them. Isn't Susan Sarandon hitting 60 as well?  As for the 50's list, I'm in shock.  Madonna?  Now THAT makes me feel old.  But Ellen and Megan Mullally, Jennifer Tilly, Miranda Richardson, SHARON STONE....50 is young.  And those women sure as hell make it look that way.  It's 2008, 50 isn't old.

    I agree

I have never thought 50 was old either, except maybe when I was really young. All of the women I admire are at least 50 so, to me, 50 is maturity and confidence and it brings more sex appeal because you know who you are and what you want by that time (well, usually). Maybe I'll see it differently as I get closer to it, but I really doubt it.

    lets see

now I know I'm no where nere the 50 mark but...I was born into a family that waited to have children as a result...I got to grow up with ALOT of people over the age of 50, 60 and 70...and I have to say I have always thought of it as a leg up on my friends because I know what aging looks like...and not as a bad thing...and I cherish everything these people have given me wisdom wise...I just hope when I finally do reach that mark I will be as informative and enlightened and giving as those who have come before me.
