Whitney Houston preps for a comeback

There's a story they tell in recording studios around the world, about a singer born not of man and woman, but of God and and Cissy Houston — a musical messiah who would astonish the world with her voice and, after an illustrious career as a movie star and recording artist, ascend to heaven, where The Almighty would kick out the chorus of consecrated angels, saying, "Sing that one from The Bodyguard again, Whitney."

Sadly, somewhere between "The Greatest Love of All" and heaven, Whitney Houston was ensnared by whack-crack, reality TV and tumultuous personal relationships. In recent years, her struggles have become a PR nightmare and even her once-angelic voice appeared to be shot.

It seemed that Houston, who is the most decorated recording artist of all time — The Guinness Book of World Records has her down for 411 awards — was destined to be a pop-culture punchline for the rest of her life.

Of course, even the most powerful demigods have their struggles (I'm looking at you, Hercules, you big Lothario!). And now, promising that her drug-addled, Bobby Brown-befuddled days are behind her, Whitney Houston is ready to drop her new album, I Look To You.

The entire album is streaming online at WhitneyHouston.com. It's a little more techno-poppy than many Houston fans were expecting, and her voice does sound bit seasoned, but by the time the LP hits track four, "I Look To You," you can feel the angels in heaven (plus Mariah Carey) shifting around nervously.

Houston's first interview in seven years will air when The Oprah Winfrey Show premieres its twenty fourth(!) season on September 14. Oprah is calling it "the most anticipated music interview of the decade," and you've got to believe her because, like Whitney, Oprah is at least part-god. (In fact, I have my suspicions that Oprah may be all-god, which explains how she landed the interview.)

I am all about Whitney. So, until the interview airs and the album drops next week, I'll just be sitting here on the Team Comeback bleachers, waving my pom-poms and my "I Will Always Love You" poster.

Listen to Whitney's new album and let us know what you think of her return to grace in the comments!

    As I told a friend,

I hope her comeback means guest appearances by Maya Rudolph's Whitney on SNL!

    Angel Whitney

Thank you for this post, StuntDouble. I'm sooo excited about Whitney's return. As a kid, not understanding anything about it, I thought that the Gulf War was ended because all the forces that were fighting heard Whitney sing the U.S. National Anthem and were like (choked up) "Man, forget it! I don't even wanna fight no no'. I'm goin home." It wasn't that she was singing the U.S. National Anthem by any means, it was just the power of WHITNEY! I thought her voice was enough to stop a war. Oh, my child brain!

    Aww!

That is honestly the sweetest story I have ever heard in my life.

I agree Ana,. I loved Whitney growing up. I had all her CDs. Plus she is a gay icon. Everything started going downhill when she hooked up with Bobby. Surprise Surprise! He should have taken "every little step" and left her career alone. ;)

    I always thought

the rumours of Whitney being gay were true.

I watched early film of her and then "assistant" Robin ... definite gaydar alert.

But then sadly, there was no way Whitney could have 'been gay' ... with her religious family and fanbase.  Even now her fans won't hear of it.

    The Crown

I so want this to work out for her...I'm a Whitney fan from way, way back and seeing her back (and in fine form) makes me ridiculously giddy.

That said, I'm not going to lie, when I heard the first single from her new album, my first thought was: man, I bet Jennifer Hudson would kill this track. Not exactly the reaction the record company is going for, I'd imagine.

Whitney needs to reclaim her crown!

    EPIC

Whitney and Oprah one-on-one- the room may explode from pure diva- this is meant in the best way possible.

and unfortunately all i will be able to hear is Joel McHale with "Whitney- rebuttal?!"

    Listening to Whitney

Well, this album isn't bad! I'm listening to it as I type this and I'm enjoying it, especially 'Like I never left'. I actually like the new huskiness to her voice, quality always shines through. Maybe I'll buy it... I don't own any Streisand or Midler and thus need a gay icon on my CD rack:)

Also, the Oprah interview is going to be awesome!

    The Preacher's Wife

Has anyone seen this movie with Whitney and Denzel Washington? It's my favorite holiday movie of all time. The soundtrack (sung almost entirely by Whitney) is phenomenal. She's just so sweet as a preacher's wife and unassuming mother.

As I grew up, it was hard for me to reconcile the angelic Whitney in the film with the train-wreck persona she's tried on in the not too distant past.

I'm excited for her comeback! And wish the lovely lady nothing but happiness and success :)

    Christmas Classic!

I love that movie!  It's so cute, and slightly weird....there's something strange about rooting for the angel to hook-up with the preacher's wife the whole movie and being slightly disappointed when it doesn't happen - and then disappointed everytime, even though I know the ending.

Anyway, I love the soundtrack too- "Who Would Imagine A King"  "I Love The Lord" - I'm not even a Christian and I love those songs. (though I grew up in the Catholic Church and still love Christmas because....it's Christmas!)  Now that's talent!  If it were Amy Grant, I would have called it cheesy crap, but it's Whitney, so I herald it. (no offense Amy, I love "Baby, Baby")

    LolitaVida's picture

    I know!

It was kind of sketchy rooting for adultery between an angel and a preacher's wife...but...I did. Hahaha! Who can forget when Whitney sang "I Believe in Miracles" to Denzel in the nightclub? #1 in my Top Ten Heteromance moments of all time <3

Also, when she sang "Who would Imagine a King" with the little cuties during the nativity pagent?! *squeee*

That's probably why it was so heartbreaking for me to picture "the preacher's wife, Julia Biggs," who I grew up watching every Christmas, smoking crack with some loser  :(

I really hope she's better! She's to talented to waste her life.

    A Whitney Comeback

I'm so glad her marriage was over to Bad Boy Bobby. I'm hope she cleaned up her act for herself, her daughter, her fans and for the Divine.

Techno-pop?  I hope her next album will be old skool  R&B.  Did R&B die or something?  I know Maxwell is trying to bring the groove back but he can't do it all by himself. So,Whitney help the brotha out, will ya.

I will find her new album and take a listen and see if I can find that gorgeous voice of hers again.  Mrs. Mariah disappointed me by crossing over too much to the Hip-Hop side.

Whitney, I hope you reign again and reclaim your crown, honey.

    Whitney's New Album:Update

Is not that bad. I'm listening to the streaming music now.  I wouldn't describe it as Techno-Pop.  It's got some grooves, R&B,etc.   Techno-pop is a wrong description.

I 'll buy it. I miss Whitney.

    Great to See Her Back...

I'm happy Whitney Houston seems to be getting her life together, if not just for her, but for Bobby Christina as well. I hated seeeing what had become of her...she's just too talented. I only hope for the best for her.

I wonder if she'll stop by Wendy Williams show to proomote her album...Wendy's practically laying out the red carpet for her.

    I miss Whitney

She played such a huge role in my childhood. It sucked to see her being ridiculed especially because she was such a big role model to me when I was younger. My craziest story that involved Whitney was when I was nine or ten. I had the Bodyguard CD and loved the song 'I will always love you'. So did my mother. One day she got really drunk and sat in-front of the CD player and listened to it on repeat the whole day! She totally ruined the song for me haha. I always cringe whenever I hear that song.
    avalaurent's picture

I've been waiting patiently for her return...

Whitney has the best voice ever, hands-down.  As long as I've had opinions, this has been one of them.  People talk about Mariah or Aretha, but no.  Maybe it's the clarity.  There's just something so perfect about the way she sings.  "One Moment In Time", "I Have Nothing" "All The Man That I Need"  "Saving All My Love For You" "Didn't We Almost Have It All".....damn, those are some good songs!  And no one can even touch the Star Spangled Banner ever again, just give up, there's no sense in trying.

I haven't listened to the new music yet, because I'm a little scared, but I'll buy it either way.  I'm sure she sounds great, but it's always hard to return to the scene after a long break, especially when you feel the need to reinvent yourself.  I'm just glad she's back, and based on the comments above, still so well-loved. Go 'head Whitney!

    So happy

I'm so happy that Whitney is back. Her first single I didn't really care that much for. "I look to you,"  when I heard this song I became all giddy. It's true her voice is not the same, maybe it will get better in years to come. I don't know. Either way I'm happy to hear her sing again.

    The Voice is back. Whitney

The Voice is back. Whitney Houston made another milestone in her singing career. She has a new album. It's understandable –  she had some problems at home, a divorce, and these things can take away from a music career, but a comeback has been rumored for months.  So when Whitney Houston decides to put on a performance for Good Morning America in Central Park, for her fans it's a breath of fresh air, and perhaps the siren is on her way back to the top.  Some tickets for a Whitney Houston tour might be worth a no fax cash advance in the near future.
