"Whip It" delivers the goodsWe bought (and played) into the Whip It hype from the moment Drew Barrymore secured the rights to produce and direct Shauna Cross' young adult novel, Derby Girl. The female-directed, female-scripted, predominantly female-acted film opens in the theaters today, and after catching the sneak peek last weekend I can confidently tell you that with Whip It, Barrymore didn't make any promises she couldn't keep.
Whip It is a smash-and-bash, coming-of-age fairytale that is thoroughly predictable in every way, yet still manages to come off fresh. Maybe it's the infusion of rollicking feminist sentiment, or the girl-heavy soundtrack that swings easily between Tilly and the Wall and Dolly Parton. Or maybe it just feels good to occasionally watch someone get elbowed in the face on purpose. For those of you who need a refresher: Whip It follows Bliss Cavendar (Ellen Page) as she lies about her age and goes against her parents' wishes to try out for a local Nowhere, TX roller derby team. Despite her tiny frame alongside women 15 years her senior, Bliss makes the team and begins leading a double life as a regular high school student by day and a a Hurl Scout by night.
And oh, those Hurl Scouts! Drew Barrymore is Smashley Simpson, the klutzy ringleader. SNL's Kristen Wiig is Maggie Mayhem. Usual stunt double (heh!) Zoe Bell is Bloody Holly. And R&B star Eve is Rosa Sparks. On the opposing side you've got Juliette Lewis as Iron Maven. In what could have turned into a catty on-screen clash, Lewis delivers beautifully as a conflicted foe to Page's Bliss. When she finds out Bliss lied about her age to get into the league, she's faced with the choice of having her nemesis kicked out, or indulging a kid who reminds her of herself when she was a teenager.
Ellen Page is even more affable as beauty pageant contestant-turned-wannabe Hurl Scout than she was a reluctant mother-to-be in Juno. She brings the badassery during the derby action and adds a nuanced vulnerability to the scenes with her parents (Marcia Gay Harden and Daniel Stern). And speaking of Marcia Gay Harden, she doesn't don a pair of skates, but she still almost manages to steal every scene she's in. Harden's character won't surprise you — you've seen her in every sports film from Bend it Like Beckham to Rudy — but she will make you believe her struggle to do what's best for her daughter. The two places Whip It strays are with Bliss' romance with Oliver (Landon Pigg) and the wink-to-the-male-audience way the girl/girl scenes play out. Too much screen time is sacrificed watching Bliss try to navigate her way through her potential relationship with the enigmatic musician. It's not that it's a bad subplot, but it's a waste not to see further development in the women's lives, especially when there is such great camaraderie among the super talented female cast of characters.
There may be nothing particularly new about Whip It's formula, but it's got enough laughs and "awws" and grrrl-powered fun to easily make it worth your time. In fact, it may be the quickest two hours I've ever spent in a theater. I almost always agree with Willy Wonka, and in this case he seems to be especially right: "If the good Lord had intended us to walk, he wouldn't have invented roller skates." Excited!
complete lack of lesbians in the film
have we really become so complacent as a community that we praise a film that presents a predominantly lesbian subculture as altogether un-queer? honestly, the complete absence of lesbians in a film about a sport that is so well-populated by queer women was bordering on exploitative. plus the constant reiterations from the women on the team about "going home to my man" was aggressively heteronormative. why do we have to settle for gay subtext?
...and honestly, if ellen page has to bang a bro in this film, why did they pick such a fugly boy?
Hmm....

I agree with you that this sport is predominantly glorified by lesbians. I haven't watched the show yet, but from what you say i sure wish there was a queer element to it. However, I don't think it really is much of a choice. How many films have we seen on the big screen that has a lesbian theme? Those generally end up on small screen.
At the end of the day, a good show doesn't have to be an accurate portrayal of the real world. What's important is that the acting is good, the film is engaging, and we have a hell of a good time watching it.
I'll settle on subtext as long as it's a good film. Rather that than some low-class, low-rate lesbian film that just does no justice to the LGBT community. Just my opinion =)
A few supporting characters would have gone a long way
Lesbian element in "Whip it"
Sorry all
It was Maire Claire and Huffington Post reveals the two of them locked lips for the photo shoot.

"Going home to my man"
I could be wrong, but when Maggie said that, I assumed she was talking about her son from later on in the movie. I don't recall her ever making any specific references to having a boyfriend/fiance/husband and when Bliss meets her kid she remarks something along the lines of "So this is why you never come out with us" and Maggie replies by saying her kid basically owns her.
In a perfect world, there can always be more gays, but Hollywood is geared towards making money and that (usually) means appealing to the largest audience possible. I still loved the movie :)
You're right.
I am pretty sure Maggie was referring to her son.
It would have been nice for there to be more lesbians in the movie. If you are looking for it, the hottub scene between Rosa Sparks (Eve) and Eva Destruction (Ari Graynor) is lesbianish, but they don't kiss. I would have preferred for the movie to have some lesbian characters, but it has been so so long since I have seen such a fun movie that is focused on women. If there are good, enjoyable movies that pass the Bechdel test, I am going to support them, even if they don't have lesbian characters.
Hell yeah!

Soooo looking forward to watching this when it finally comes halfway across the world over here. Three key elements that has already roped me in:
1. Ellen Page
2. Drew Barrymore
3. Roller derby!!!
I saw it last week during
I saw it last week during the sneak preview and I have to say that it was pretty amazing... I laughed... and laughed again because they movie was pretty damn funny haha... i just loved it and it wouldnt be such a bother if I were to see it again for the second time.... even third time... plus... I can don my free WHIP IT t-shirt since i went to the screening :)
BE YOUR OWN HERO
Yup.
Nuff said :)
_ _ _ _ _
"Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter, and those who matter don't mind." (Dr. Seuss)
omg i wanna
i wanna watch it right now ! :)
and i like Drew's socks :)
Juliette Lewis
Her name is Iron Maven not Dinah Might lol.
Anyway, Whip It was awesome! I saw the sneak preview and got my free t-shirt and loved it! :D
probably got confused cause
I Love Ellen Page
I saw it at a sneak preview and then at a free screening; so it just came out and I've seen it twice already. lol But it's a good movie so you should see those as many times as possible. It funny because the last time I was at a regular movie theater not an indie was when I went to see Juno a couple day after it opened. I just like my independent theater so much more; they even serve wine and so many kinds of beer there.
I liked a lot of Ellen Page's movies like Wilby Wonderful, Marion Bridge, Hard Candy and The Tracy Fragments. And now she's pretty badass in Whip It.
I too was going to say the Juliette Lewis was Iron Maven. When I read Dinah Might I was like "That doesn't sound right".
Ohhh yes! It's on for date
Saw
it last week and loved it! Seriously lacking definite lesbian content but the moments between some of the girls on the team and interaction between Page's and Shawkat's characters were well worth it. Thinking about seeing it again.
minor correction
Bliss's team name is the Hurl Scouts, not Hurl Girls.
I too saw the sneak peek of Whip It, with a good portion of my teammates (coincidentally right after practice, so we were all pretty authentic looking/smelling). Agreed about the romantic subplot with the indie musician boy--yawn. I was relieved how it turned out in the end. (Trying to keep this spoiler free, but the movie ain't no Sixth Sense.)
I had been concerned about the intentional punches and elbows shown in the trailer, but was glad to see it was at least implied as illegal.
But seriously, her last skates had Barbies on them, and then she's a star jammer after a montage of skating in her cul-de-sac? No effing way. Ellen Page's form needed work (see Jackie Daniels, woo!) but props for doing her own skating.
If I had my druthers, there would be a roller derby movie that focused on the derby--but with any sports movie I can recall, there's always some kind of romantic interest. Next time let it be a lesbian one. Vagine Regime, yes.
Just got back
It was amazing.
I went with my guy friend, and we spent basically the entire ride home going "You know what was amazing?" "when she took her shirt off." The romantic subplot was worth it just for that.
Hell yeah!
Loved it!
I just saw it and I thought it was great! There were a group of four women sitting in front of me who were actually part of a roller derby team and they left right after the movie to go hang out at their booth by the cinema doors. They were handing out Whip It posters and flyers for their first game (do you call it a game?). I'm very pleased that I got a poster... now I can see Ellen Page every day :)
Very occasionally, if you pay attention, life doesn't suck.

I'm so jealous! Can't wait to see it now!

Can't wait!
Awesome!
i saw it!!
it was awesome and extremly funny. thought it lacked some serious lesbian action it had it's moments.
"vaginas are awesome."
whip it!
saw the movie last night, and loved it! silly, fun, and a great cast.
one thing though - they're called the "hurl scouts", not "hurl girls" :)
Saw It Yesterday!!
So, I have been in love with roller-derby ever since seeing Raquel Welch don the skin-tight outfit in Kansas City Bomber. (Don't ask me about her acting...I didn't notice...but I digress). So WHIP IT! was a must see for me! LOL I was going to put off seeing it until next weekend, but then saw Drew on some 'E" show - in which she said that she did what lots of other do - she fell in love with her leading lady. That's all I needed to get me out of the Barcalounger and out the door. It was a terrific movie and I enjoyed immensely....(and no, not just because I got a free bag of popcorn with the price of my movie ticket. - even though - that did make me happy).
Anyway, I loved it and would highly recommend....it has a bit of everything and I agree with StuntDouble - it was the fastest two hours ever.
Hmmm..and now thinking about it...I might have to go see if I can find Kansas City Bomber at the local video store..... Uhh...cause this time, I want to focus on the acting. Pfftttt..... Yeah...right..
Does anyone play Roller Derby???
My girlfriend and I have an understanding that she is the only girl for me . . . unless Kristen Wiig ever switches teams and comes knocking on my door. Then all bets are off. So she humored me and we went and saw Whip It last night (and then came home and watched a bad Saturday Night Live, so it was like a Kristen Wiig double feature. Delightful!!)
Of course I would have seen Whip It even if Kristen Wiig wasn't in it. We totally enjoyed it and the cast is fantastic. Seriously everyone is great, well, except the boyfriend Oliver, but that's probably just because we didn't think he was good enough for the awesome Ellen Page. I didn't expect her character to be gay at all, but they could have gotten a better love interest!
It was fun, funny, cute and original despite being predictable. And of course, there was Kristen Wiig.
And it was great to see a big movie produced by women, directed by a woman and starring mostly women. Everyone should go see this movie in theaters! If we want to see more movies like this we have to go see them in theaters!
On a side note I've been on the email list for a roller derby team here in San Diego for over a year. They are always looking to add new girls to the team but I just never have the guts to go. Anyone play? Anyone in San Diego?
let's make a pact.
I tell you what, if you
Please please please let
Saw it and loved it!!
Saw it opening night and was not disappointed. Cast was amazing, music was amazing and lots of great action. I wish there was more Ari Graynor(she played Eva Distruction) in it. The scene with her and Eve in the hot tub really could have gone somewhere.
I think the best part was that you could actually tell that there were true friendships formed on set that carried onto the scene. You just cant hide the chemistry between the girls.
~*Copperboom*~
I watched it on Saturday...
[WARNING CONTAINS A FEW SPOILERS]
And I refused to read this till I had seen it...
And I was sad you didn't have any pictures of the 2 girls snuggling/ sharing a flask in the hottub
Because just that could have helped sell me
Sadly there was no kissing... Though the cat fights were to die for.
And I wont go into to much... but my favourite cat fight is when Drew's Character Smashley Simpson ends up on top off one of the competitors...
though the boyfriend replaced from getting into the girls personal lives I think it did show her struggle [and the fact she was straight]
And though there was no kissing Bliss's ex friend id hang some barbies tied together naked that resemble Ellen's and Alia's Carecters.
So though there were only hints of more than simply catfights... their long legs, and the AMAZING story line kept my mind off it.
Lotta Fun!
This movie was a lot of great fun AND it had a heart. You can't beat that. Oh wait...Kristen Wiig.....Drew Barrymore....Zoe Bell....Ellen Page....Alia....Yeah. You CAN beat that.
My one complaint is that Jimmy Fallon got on my nerves. He's not funny or charming anymore. I'm not sure he ever really was and that's not just my gay speaking. His antics (And I swear I saw him do his Barry Gibb dance a couple of times) were tired, old and annoying. It's been done. Time to let go, little man.
OOOOTHERWISE ....
Totally worth watching. If you haven't already, GO! Do so NOW!
Lesbianish quote about Whip It in Bust Magazine.
Although I really, really liked the movie, I did get my hopes up for some lesbian content when I saw this quote in the latest Bust magazine:
Interviewer: Yeah, roller-derby teams seem to be very close. And there's also a lot of drama, which is lovely and juicy.
Alia Shawkat (Pash): I think they start to question the male sex, 'cause they're like, "These girls are so hot and strong, why the f**k would I want to sleep with a guy?"
it was a good movie.
it was a good movie.
and thats all i have to say about it.
In the advertisment,
In the advertisment, trailers for this movie it looked as if there was an Lesbian couple amung Drews skat crew? Was that story cut out of the film? Or just a case of false advertisement?
This movie lost my interest a while back when they introduced Ellen Page's character lame boyfriend drama into this flick that is suposed to be about women independence and empowerment.
I'll wait for the Unrated DVD.
