TV Alert: "Stargate Universe" debuts tonight

GLAAD's "Where We Are On TV" report got you down? Well, cheer up, kids, because the much-hyped, highly-debated Stargate Universe premieres tonight as a two-hour movie on Syfy, and the word on the Internet is that lesbian I.O.A. rep Camile Wray (Ming-Na) exceeds all expectations.

A quick refresher: SGU is the third incarnation of the Stargate franchise in which a multi-national exploration team finds themselves stranded on the ancient ship Destiny. Camile is an HR rep who becomes the highest-rankingIOA member left on the ship. She is separated from her long-time partner Sharon (Reiko Aylesworth), who will begin a series of hopefully recurring appearances in episode seven.

Camile is the first leading lesbian character played by an Asian American on American primetime TV, and one of only a handful of leading lesbian characters on American TV this fall. Her presence on SGU is a big deal not only because it's groundbreaking, but also because it shows Syfy's willingness to better their dismal GLAAD diversity score from last year. And they're doing it with a franchise that has been inherently conservative compared to darker, edgier shows like Battlestar Galactica

Ming-Na recently spoke toio9 about coming out as the first lesbian on Stargate.

I've never played a gay character, and for me that was such an incredible challenge. And I said, "As long as you write her with absolute depth and she's well rounded, and there's no stereotypes, and she's a real person — then yes, let's go for it." I'm thrilled ... Being an Asian woman in this business, I have had to deal with a lot of adversities ... so I relate a lot to Camille's character, because I think being a woman who's also gay in an environment where she has to be the head of a department — she's an IOA officer, head of the human resources department, and she is in charge in a man's world.

Joseph Mallozzi long-time writer and producer in the Stargate world, wrote about Ming-Na on his blog last week:

I loved the character [Camile Wray] because she was fiercely independent, a force to be reckoned with, and a fiery wildcard in an extraordinarily volatile scenario.

Of course the character we imagine at the script stage is never quite the character we end up with on screen. Sometimes, they’re very close. Sometimes, they don’t live up to those lofty initial expectations. And, still other times, with the right person in the role, they far surpass that original incarnation. A great actor not only gives life to the attributes that so engaged you on the page, but adds layerings of depth and complexity that, in turn, open up a host of wonderful possibilities for both the character and the show in general. And that’s exactly what actress Ming-Na has accomplished in the role of Camile Wray.

If you tied together every promise network execs have broken with regards to gay characters over the years, you could fashion a rope long enough for the SGU crew to tug themselves home to earth. Still, I'm hopeful and excited about this one. Will you be tuning in to watch Stargate Universe?

I'll tune in

I stopped watching SG-1 a long time ago and never saw an episode of Atlantis, but I'll tune in for Ming-Na and her character.

I'll give it a go

I've always found it hard to get into Stargate. I will give Universe a go as there are a few substantial actors in the caste, including Ming Na who may give this genre a lift it has needed for awhile.

I will not hold my breath over the development of the 'lesbian' character and associated expectations, but am willing to be pleasantly surprised.

Stargate serieses

I've watched the other two and liked them for the most part (Post Heroes still annoys me)... I'll give this one a go on Hulu, but I'm not holding my breath for this 'lesbian' storyline. We'll see...

I will try

I've watched occasional episode of both SG-1 and Atlantis over the years, but never really gotten into either, but for Ming-Na I will definitely give this one a try!

great

I hope the episodes has great story lines.. xcept the one with lesbian turn bi just because..
McGirl-ver's picture

i'll try it

@Davs - i agree totally about that story-line, which made me not want to watch the series. i love sci-fi/syfy and will give this one a try and see how i like it. i am hoping for the best. i would love for some flashbacks as living and being lost in space a very large space barrier for a same-sex relationship. Syfy could "say" they have a lesbian character, who is just a strong woman character, but is the only one (of the cast) not to see any action in the series b/c her woman is so far away.
Davs's picture

True..

But.. there is only one episode u cant/wont watch.. so, its good. 0.1% bad. 99% good. *I hope anyway* :)

watching it now

i dvr-ed it last night and am half way in and so sucked in. enjoying how they linked the series but not too much to make a non-watcher feel alienated for the current series. will report back when i've finished the episode.

Watched it

Didn't watch the previous SG series but I'll give this a try. I watched it already, so far, no signs yet of the storyline of Ming Na's character which will obviously be told in flashbacks in the next few eps. I'm hoping it'll be a good one. We just have to wait and find out, eventually. ;o)

star gate universe

i never got to see it yet...i will get to it soon...just i was a huuuuge fan of the original stargate with sam and well when janet died..i just couldn't watch it anymore...they did have an underlying theme of lesbianism in it how ever very subtle...but anyway i am now dying to see this new one...atlantis never appealed to me but a leading lesbian charachter in any show will get my attention!

I'm excited by the fact that

I'm excited by the fact that there will be a lesbian Asian American on tv! Very cool.

It's a Go

I was a huge fan of both SG-1 and Atantis. Loved seeing O'Neil and Carter (wishing to have seen Teal'c) in SGU and generally enjoyed the pilot. I'll withhold judgement on the "controversial" episode until I actually see it.

SGU

She is beautiful. Love to see an American Asian woman, brought in as a Lesbian to the show. YA!!!

Well so far Ming-Na

Well so far Ming-Na character is a weak loud annoying bitch, but no diffrent then any other character on this show thus far. It's kind of bullshit really. You're on an aciant alien space shape traveling accross the universe and this is your attitude? I don't think so! Dieing on a shipe on the other side of the universe isn't the worst way to go, you know?.

Still all that aside I think that the show is actually going to be a good one.

-I speak in random thoughts

to be honest...

I am so disheartened by lesbians on television at the moment that as long as she doesn't, fall to her death on a parachut jump, slit her wrist, become a murderer, get shot, attacked by a spoon, shoot herself, or date her mum's future husband i'll probably watch it with joy.

what happened to the good old days when lesbians just went back to men?

alas...though it does look really good and robert carlisle is on it who is awesom whoop!!

lol

"attacked by a spoon" LMBO!
