Traveling through: Films that take us to new places

Movies become ads for tourism when they feature wonderful characters surrounded by vibrant, breathtaking scenery. Australia's Ministry for Tourism knows it's true, and they're banking on Nicole Kidman's forthcoming epic Australia to be the centerpiece of their global marketing campaign in the next year. I'm afflicted with wanderlust in the worst way, so I know Nicole Kidman's film will send me searching for plane tickets to Oz.

Show me a movie with a beautiful woman in a gorgeous place, and I'm trolling Expedia like it's my job.

Meryl Streep and I went to Greece via Mama Mia just last weekend. Yes, the movie was a hot mess, but Streep was as charming as ever. The two us ran along the beach and sang ABBA, with the waves crashing all around us. I have also been to east Africa with Meryl Streep in Out of Africa. Of course, if that danged Robert Redford hadn't shown up, we probably would have had a better time.

Tuscany was a little tougher for me. Yes, it is the artistic centerpiece of Italy and all that, but I was so torn between Diane Lane and Sandra Oh in Under the Tuscan Sun that I hardly had time to enjoy the wine. Diane Lane was a writer, which is dead sexy. But Sandra Oh was gorgeous and infected with a biting wit. Sandra was already a lesbian, but Diane wasn't pregnant. I flip back and forth between the two women every time I watch the movie, but never do I fall out of love with Tuscany.

This weekend I'll be traveling back to Greece with The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, and here lies a huge dilemma: The actress that I love the most out of the group is the underrated Amber Tamblyn, but America Ferrera is a close second. I'm having a hard time getting past Blake Lively's Serena Van der Woodsen, and I'm not sure Alexis Bledel will ever be anything more to me than Rory Gilmore. (Rory, have your mom call me!) I guess we'll deal with who to love once we're on the shores of Greece. There are worse places to sort out a love, um, pentagon.

Are there any movies (or women) that have inspired you to travel? Do you want to go to France with Meg Ryan in French Kiss? To New Zealand with Liv Tyler in Lord of the Rings? New York City with Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany's or with her to Rome in Roman Holiday? Or, oh, how about out into the sea on The Black Pearl with Keira Knightley in Pirates of the Caribbean? I'd go down with that ship any day of the year.

    Thelma & Louise

After i saw that film i have wanted to see the beautiful deserts and the Grand Canyon. Hopefully i can avoid driving into the canyon... But living here in scandinavia it's a pretty big trip for someone who's afraid to fly...

I saw the film and the Grand Canyon was amazing. I think you'll love it here in Arizona.. Grand Canyon has this Skywalk where you'll be able to see the whole place 100 meters above the ground.

    I saw the first "Sisterhood"

I saw the first "Sisterhood" movie about a month after I had made a trip to Greece and the movie made me want to turn around and go right back. As for other places I would love to see. The New Zealand depicted in "Narnia" was absolutely breathtaking and the streets of New York in "Definitely, Maybe" make me wish I lived in Manhatten.

    The Sisterhood and Mamma Mia

After I saw the first sisterhood of the travelling pants I really wanted to go to Greece, because it just looked like such a beautiful place. After seeing Mamma Mia I realized that I NEED to go to Greece. My uncle's wife is Greek and she says it is beautiful there, the island is so untouched (except for tourists)

Me too! I finally did get to

Me too! I finally did get to go on a road trip out west, and it was awesome. I even made it to the bottom of the Grand Canyon, but in a manner that was much safer than T&L's way of doing it.

Oops, this message was supposed to be a response to Erika, but it didn't show up in the right place.

    some

I don't need any more inspiration on places to visit...my list is too long already!  but...

Memoirs of a Geisha - there was one long shot swirling around the main actress on the edge of a cliff that was just breathtaking.

The Sound of Music/Amadeus - Salzburg, Austria.  They hate the movie, but whatever! So didn't care. :)

    Why hate on Serena?

Why hate on Serena?  Sure, her name is a mouthful, but Gossip Girl is pretty amazing as far as guilty pleasures go...

    Singing and Dancing in Greece!

Fun blog post! I must agree that Mamma Mia was a bit of a hott mess, but anything with Meryl is worth seeing (in most cases multiple times). While a little kooky, it was still amazingly fun and funny! The movie made me want to visit Greece (and sing and dance while doing it). I just took my nephews to see Mummy III, and it made the Chinese new year look pretty appealing (minus the mummies and almost dying part). Maybe, one day I'll visit. Seeing the emperor's terra-cotta army would be amazing! As for Sisterhood, I'm definitely ready to see it, and am hoping it is not a disappointment. I am a huge fan of the book series.

    New York

Whenever I see any part of You've Got Mail I want to go to New York. Yes, I know the New York depicted in the movie isn't real (or all of the truth), but it's the only time I ever think that it might be fun to live there. Then reality sets back in!

I too often do research on a place featured in a movie I see, especially if it is someplace I do not know much about or is high on my list of places to go. Other times I look into relocation info if they do a great job during filming!

    Alexis Bledel

Funny, after that road trip that Lorelai and Rory took to Harvard, I was inspired to do the same.

I did just that the following year.

    Auntie Mame

I prefer Rosalind Russell in the role and saw the movie shortly before I moved to South Korea a few years ago.  Her command to "live! live! live!" because "life is a banquet" snaps me out of a dull mood every time I hear it.

I Guess I'm Not that Gay

Because a hot woman in a movie has never inspired me to travel. But oh my yes, depictions of beautiful places in movies, or shown on TV or in a magazine or described in a book or photographed during someone else's trip... It doesn't take much to inspire me to want to go almost anywhere.
