"Torchwood: Children of the Earth" comes west

When Torchwood's five-part mini-series Children of Earth aired on Britain's BBC One earlier this month, it trended on Twitter faster than Michael Jackson and Harry Potter — not shabby for a show that wore a "hokey Who-lite" label like a Hawthornian badge of shame for its first two seasons.

Tonight, Children of Earth begins on BBC America, and it will become apparent in the first ten minutes that while Captain Jack Harkness may have been in command at the time, this ain't your grandmama's Torchwood.

Children of Earth opens at a blistering pace that doesn't slow down until the last three minutes of the five-day event. The only mention of deceased teammates Tosh and Owen is a battered photograph taped to Gwen's workstation, and the only indication of a time lapse between seasons is that Jack and Ianto have finally begun calling themselves a couple.

Of course, there's not much time to dwell of either of those things because on Day One at 8:40 a.m. every child on earth silently freezes in place. They follow it up before noon, repeating an eerie mantra unison: "We are coming."

The "we" in question? Aliens, of course. Their mission? You'll have to wait until Day Three to find out that bone-chilling answer.

The Whoverse has never been at a loss for strong, attractive, brilliant women — even though they are sometimes relegated to supporting roles or lost at various points in time and space. Children of the Earth, however, ratchets up the girl power at least a dozen notches.

Joining Gwen Cooper (Eve Myles) on the female front is Home Office personal assistant Lois Habiba (Cush Jumbo), whose heroism on Day Four caused me to leap into the air and swear a little. There's also the mysterious and sinister Johnson (Liz May Brice), who is, at the very least, one of the sexiest assassins the BBC has ever given us.

Fans have been divided on Gwen from the moment she delivered her first pizza, but this time around, "Super Cooper" earns the moniker. Her compassion and leftover police woman instincts are still firmly in tact, but she's finally fully using her brain — and her kung-fu skills. Gwen Cooper's general bad-assery should keep your adrenaline humming along at a fight or flight (or makeout) level for five solid days.

Oh, it's a controversial series to be sure, one that American TV producers, frankly, wouldn't have had the courage to make. There's a heart-wrenching death, a pretty graphic resurrection, and genuinely horrifying conversations and decisions that happen behind closed doors in Thames House.

I would call it Whitehall intrigue meets extraterrestrials, but perhaps an easier-to-understand description for Americans would be this: What if Joss Wheedon — hopped-up on Red Bull — dropped the vampires, added aliens and wrote an entire mini-series while watching 24? That's Children of Earth.

Anyone planning to tune into BBC America tonight for Torchwood? And to all of our UK readers: how did you like Children of Earth when it aired on BBC One?

    You lucky, lucky people

I've been hooked on Torchwood since season one and this five-ep special is *awesome*.

It manages to combine comedy, sci-fi and some truly upsetting moral dilemmas, and Gwen Cooper is a hottie.

Y'all are in for a treat.

    First time's the charm...

I hadn't watched any of Torchwood, as I tend to dislike spinoffs, but I sure am glad I tuned in to it this time!

What a FAN-BLOODY-TASTIC 5 hours of TV over 5 days!

I haven't enjoyed a sci-fi show (or any show for that matter) so much since the re-boot of Battlestar Galactica - it was so gripping I couldn't wait for each episode to air!

Children Of Earth had it all! - great writing, great acting, great ideas....

I found myself asking the same hard questions as the government lackeys had to in the show - what would I DO faced with the same situation? DO the needs of the many always outweigh the needs of the few, to quote a famous Vulcan?

I can't praise Torchwood enough and would now love to watch previous seasons, if this is representative of the quality I've been missing out on. It even moved me to tears several times! Oh the horror! Oh the humanity!

Oh and on a Dr Who-verse related side-note, has anyone else seen the outfit the new incarnation of the Dr will be wearing? 80's math teacher MUCH?! Ewwww! So much for getting the youngest Dr ever, they go and ruin him with the oldest, fuddyduddy threads! At least his companion will be wearing Converse All Stars.....

    My favorite season

... And for those familiar with the UK Bad Girls series: that's where you recognize Liz May Brice from.

    Enjoy!

    No Spoilers...A Hint or Two

WOW!!!!! For anyone who has never seen Torchwood before, this is a great way to be introduced to it. For those of us who are old fans, we are finding out lots of new information about the team and we are introduced to a prospective new member. (She's lovely) There are bombs exploding, children under the control of aliens, a female anti terrorist who wants Torchwood destroyed and a naked Jack. And this is all in the first two episodes.

I have seen the whole series and I'm not saying anything other than you REALLY don't want to miss this.

    Enjoy!!!

    Peace, Joy and Love

Never been a fan of Gwen,

Never been a fan of Gwen, but this season she was AMAZING

    Jack, honest to god, incredible.

Ianto, i adore Ianto. Some of his lines were hilarious. Picking aliens things out of dead people aint that special but look, HE BROUGHT HIS OWN TUPPERWARE! XD

i couldn't decide who i liked more out of the new characters. Lois continues the Doctor Who tradition that Temps are pretty much the un-known heroes of the world. But Ianto's brother-in-law stole it for me. Brass, abrasive, borderline offensive, he is the epitany of the modern council estate British man. Yet, he is also capable, reliable and of some moral standing.

This season is great and also a total head-f*ck. If you ain't seen it yet you're in for an insane time.

    Day 5

Day 5 is/was on youtube. Some of it was pretty disturbing, but from what I've seen of Torchwood, it has always been darker than Dr. Who.

I'll definately be watching either way. Jack is one of my favorite characters in the Dr. Who franchise.

    Don't Miss! Absolutely brilliant!

I have only ever been a casual fan of Torchwood - hated Owen, Tosh was dull. However, this 5 part series was just superb. Some of the best TV drama, never mind sci fi, in ages. This is also a great place to start if you haven't watched the series before as it is really a fantastic, fast paced political alien thriller! Some of the more fervent fans were upset at the death of some characters, but for me, the whole mini series was just brilliant tv (although the last 10 mins were a slight letdown)

USA viewers, watch this, you are in for a treat!

    OMG LIZ MAY BRICE!

I have been in love with Torchwood since the beginning and I can't wait for this new season. Eve and Liz on-screen together will surely spin a fan fiction or two. However, I'm sad to return to a show with out Tosh and Owen. I'd always hoped those two would find their way into one another's arms. So sad it didn't work out that way.

I think this season will prove to be one of many surprises.

Arggggggh its SO GOOD! I kept rewinding the bits with Gwen, couldn't get over how totally badass she was being! V happy they let her character properly kick some ass this time.

    outstanding, dramatic entertainment!!

i absolutely LOVE torchwood whenever i see it - i'm not much of a tv watcher so i only get round to seeing any programmes on bbc iplayer or elsewhere on the internet. but anyway, this is an epic mini series. it's also a really mean thing to do to me - only five episodes?? although, thinking about it, i'm not sure if i could take any more intensity and brilliance on either an emotional or psychological level.

to all gwen detractors - i think she's gorgeous and sweet, personally, and in this episode her character is really set free and, to be clichéd, shows what she's made of. an aside, does anyone remember her brief, cruelly cut short by extraterrestrial fuel needs, makeout with that hot girl possessed by said extraterrestrial? hot. and she already had me at her first "what's occurin'?" - the cutest welsh version of your american "what's up?"

and to MsWoo, isn't she just?? (although her breasts look "factually inaccurate" (and possibly dangerous) in terms of her role as HRH Princess Margaret).

Lucy Cohu as Princess Margaret in

    Lucy Cohu

So I have learned this woman's name and have read that she is quite the accomplished actor. She was in Gossford Park, which is a film I adore and now need to watch again. I think I am in love with her.

There is such a thing as love at first sight, isn't there? Yes, I believe there is. I know it. I have felt it, and its name is Lucy.

    sigh...

    monkeyINshoes's picture

    I have to say...die hard

I have to say...die hard Torchwooder!! I have the first and second series on DVD and have been reading the Children of Earth info on Afterelton like a manic. I mean, you havn'e read a review untill you've read their Torchwood reviews.

I liked Gwen most of the time, though less when she tried to be in Jacks pants. She and Rhys are cute...and Ianto looks much better in Jacks pants anyway. Gwen is at her best, like Ianto, when she kicks ass. Therefore, CoE wins...though will the fans keep tuning in after the death of a nearest and dearest? I have to say I hope they do, but I think they have every right to be angry when they see the way CoE gos. I was; RTD is going to have to pull a rabbit out of a hat to make it run for 6 series, like he hoped.

another cruel death adside, though, Torchwood just gets better and better!!!!!

    awesome!! show! great actors

    Incredible chemistry

Between Liz and Lucy. I want to see more of them together, even if they must have their own series. What transpires between them in this miniseries leaves so much room for the two of them to come together once more.

Who do I have to bribe to get this done?

    Children of the Earth

Children of the Earth was so brilliant. The best series of Torchwood to date. The writing was fantastic and the acting was brilliant. I also now have a crush on Cush Jumbo. I hope they bring her into series 4! Her character, Lois, was incredible. A really gutsy girl. BBC, I love you for making such a fantastic series!

    Heart Pounding...

I watched all 5 episodes, which is close to 5 hours, in one sitting today. It was truly epic! The ladies were hot, but the plot was so kick ass sometimes I forgot. Then Gwen would pull out a gun and I'd remember. I absolutely adore Torchwood and to me it far outshines the shadow it's been placed in by Dr. Who. They need to bring it back for another full season at least!

    Torchwood Radio

The miniseries was phenomenal.  But there's more Torchwood out there.  A little while ago, they did 4 Torchwood radio plays, starring the same actors.  I listened to the first one, Lost Souls, last night, and it was amazing.  Like watching an episode of the show.  And they dealt a lot with Owen and Tosh being gone.

The other three are called Asylum, Golden Age, and The Dead Line.  I'm guessing they also provide a bit of a bridge between seasons.  If you get a chance to listen to them, you should.

    Torchwood continuity

As I understand it, the radio plays fit thus:

    Torchwood Season 2

    Lost Souls

    Asylum

    Golden Age

    Dead Line

    Seriously amazing show

Seriously amazing show like! This season is just unreal, really reaaly tense and scary, better than a lot of high budget movies that are released in the cinema like. I love how it's set in Wales too, and I love the Welsh characters Ianto and Gwen.."What's occurring?!" haha, classic!

    Fantastic!

This really was an excellet series! I did get frustrated (and really upset) by the ending, but it takes great tv to make you care that much. But, yes: i cried a lot, laughed a lot, and then cried again for good measure.

Even if you're not traditionally a 'torchwooder', watch this series: its on a whole different level to series 1 & 2 (which I admittedly did love): its darker, hotter(!) and scarier. Enjoy!

IMO, this is hardly Joss work.

I'm a huge fan of Torchwood, and I play avidly in that fandom.  However, especially towards the end (and NOT just because of "the event" in part 4), I felt that this was poorly written.  Not as a story itself, because it was exciting and dangerous and all of that, but as a fan of the characters, I felt alienated by some of the decisions that they were making.  I don't like rooting against my favs, which is definitely what I was doing at the end, nor do I appreciate what appeared to me to be some radically out of characterness.

Best thing to come out of this was Johnson, though.  I'm rooting for her to come back.  She and Alice had my femslashdar pinging in there.  And Gwen, hoorah!  I was among those that found her to be, well, rather a slutbag (not simply because she was sleeping around, but because she was being unfair to Rhys) in the first series, but she grew on me in the second, especially post-wedding, and now I'm definitely on Team Cooper.

    MsWoo's picture

    Joss?

Would that be a comparison to Whedon's work? I think it's apples and oranges. Two very different writer/directors.

I watched all 5 hours at once, rather than night by night. I found the complexity of the story very involving. I didn't feel as though the ending was a let down. I felt like they were setting it up for next season.

I definitely agree that there was a ping between those characters. I would love to pick up next season seeing them involved, or at least in each other's orbits in some way that we would get to see the romance build.

I'm currently hitting my head against a wall

I just moved, and my new house doesn't have cable. Now I can usually live with this, since I don't watch TV, but Torchwood is practically my lifeblood! For months I have scoured the internet for any mention of season 3. I've been counting the days, even the hours! And now I have to wait until if comes out of DVD!

My god, I need to get a life...
