Tina Fey, Cate Blanchett and Lily Tomlin give their voices to "Ponyo"

The trailer for renowned Japanese artist Hayao Miyazaki’s Ponyo hit theaters this weekend, and it's as surreal (and Disney-fied) as American anime fans hoped (and feared) it would be.

Ponyo (originally Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea) tells the tale of young fish/mermaid whose longing to live on land leads her into an unlikely friendship with a five-year-old human, Sōsuke . The film was released in Japan last year to critical acclaim, prompting at least one advertising agency to say it was Japan's best export in 2008, behind the Nintendo Wii.

Hayao Miyazaki is a god among Japanese animators. His 2001 film, Spirited Away, was the first anime movie to win an Academy Award, which is almost as impressive as the fact that it beat out Titanic for the highest grossing film in Japanese history. So it's no surprise that he had his choice of actors for the American retelling of Ponyo.

Sōsuke's mother is voiced by Tina Fey.

Cate Blanchett voices Ponyo's mom.

The other female voice talent comes from Cloris Leachman, Lily Tomlin and Betty White.

In fact, Disney's selling point seems to be the voice talent. Sōsuke and Ponyo are voiced by the youngest Jonas Brother and Noah Cyrus. (You know, as in Cyrus.)

Anime purists have been biting their nails over the potential Disney-fication of Ponyo. Early on, Hayao Miyazaki said that Disney would have to tweak the movie for American audiences. The names were changed, and some of the scenes reworked for English dubbing. Also, there's the poster, which bears a slight resemblance to another little orange fish who lived in the big blue ocean.

Overall, though, Disney seems to be trying to strike a balance between the hard-core anime fandom, and the parents who will buy tickets for their kids in the off-chance that the name "Cyrus" means Hannah Montanna will be making a guest appearance in the film.

Check out the trailer for Ponyo, and let us know what you think.

Actually looking forward to this

I LOVE LOVE LOVE Spirited Away, and just about anything that has to do with Disney (Except the Jo Bros, unfortunately) but I know with that star studded cast tey raked in, it looks like this movie will turn out to be another amazing anime film!

"Sōsuke and Ponyo are

"Sōsuke and Ponyo are voiced by the youngest Jonas Brother and Noah Cyrus."

Ew. No. Why. I stopped wanting to see this movie after that line, sorry. I'm just really adverse to the idea of having movies voiced by some popular talents to draw in people. You know it's probably not because the voice is suiting, but rather because it'll get all the teeny-boppers to come watch.

EXACTLY

Thats exactly what i was thinking, just because they are "famous" or related to someone famouse does not mean they will be a good voice for a character. And a JONAS brother ewwwwwwwwwww.

But thats the great thing

But thats the great thing about it--you see the amazing artwork in theaters and THEN when you buy it you can switch it to Japanese w. subs and the voices actually are made for the part :)

Word.

To me no matter who's re-cast, dubbed voices rarely are as good as the original cast, but thank goodness for English subtitles!  If I recall Princess Mononoke (Mononoke Hime) was released in American theaters in both the dubbed and subbed variety (the latter probably just in indie theaters) but maybe a subbed version will be release after the dubbed has its run.

I thought so too..

When I read that I admit I wasn't happy about it either, but seriously... it's a Miyazaki movie. I absolutley LOVE Miyazaki's movies! And this looks amazing and not even jonas and miley cyrus's little siblings can deter me from watching this. Plus disney has done a good job so far voicing Miyazaki's characters so I'm not that worried. As long as none of main three jonas brothers or the actual miley cyrus is apart of this film... I'm content.

And like someone said earlier... you can always buy it and switch it over to the original japanese :) Which I will probably be doing.

I've no idea what this anime is about, but...

ME. WANT. FEY!

I'm on withdrawals right now. Aaack.

haha I am right there

haha I am right there with you on the Fey train...  and uhh, this may sound really bad, but I always thought anime was just a fancy word for japanese cartoon porn. Man I was way off.

I don't care for Miley Cyrus and her mom, my bad, or her dad. And I don't even know who these Jonas sisters, oops, brothers are either..

But anything with Tina Fey, count me in! I can take my little brothers and sisters to see it. I just wrote a big, pathetic Tina Fey blog on my myspace.. she's my June (honorary) lesbian of the month...

More Tina Fey news, please!

Cyrus what??

Ok, I may have some selective amnesia. I refused to retain that bit of info when I read it. Haha.

And, aaand, Cate Blanchet! Who can say no to this? Can't wait :D

Anime

"I always thought anime was just a fancy word for japanese cartoon porn. Man I was way off."

Haha you're not the only one! Anime doesn't strike my fancy at all, and it might take a little more than Fey's voice to stomach company as wretched as the Jonas brothers and stink face Cyrus. Why, Disney? WHY!?

I <3 Miyazaki

I <3 Miyazaki, so I'll definitely be seeing this.

I'm not crazy about a Jonas/Cyrus voice choice for the main characters, but heck, the rest of the cast is good.

Soph's picture

Agreed

I know what you mean, I'm an avid Miyazaki fan but also a strong hater of anything to do with those idiotic Jonas Brothers. Nonetheless I will be seeing this film for Tina Fey and Cate Blanchett, not too mention it IS Miyazaki.

i could never hate miyazaki

i could never hate miyazaki (my neighbor totoro=one of my faaaaaaave films) and with that talent, how could you go wrong? but i do agree that disney is slipping into the realm of trying to use celebrity talent to boost the film's popularity instead of letting the (absolutely stunning) quality speak for itself.

nevertheless, come august 14, this lil' white butt will be settled in a theater chair. and whenever it comes out on dvd, i WILL be getting it in the original japanese.

:D

Mmm...

It's a Ghibli movie that is distributed by Disney in the US, but Miyazaki is far from sold to Disney.

They've been trying to get him into directing a Disney film and he has always refused and kept his integrity as a filmmaker from Japan.

No matter who the cast is, and what Disney have done to the movie to make it "watchable" to an american audience (seriously, aren't you offended by this??? I would kick some asses if they were changing Miyazaki's movies in France to make them more available, it's a shame!), it is still 150% a Ghibli movie, and not a Disney movie, and I'm tired of seeing Disney showing off their name with Miyazaki's work, just because Buena Vista has the rights to distribute it.

Sorry, I'm an animator, I obviously absolutely adore Miyazaki, and I'm proud of him for never accepting Disney's offer!

I'm assuming that the plot

I'm assuming that the plot changes relate to Japanese folklore elements that wouldn't translate because there's no direct cultural correlation. Disney and Miyazaki have had a strang relationship for years, they butchered one of his earlier movies in their dub (Nausicaa, if I remember correctly). Since then he's had a tight oversight of their translations, so any changes they made will have been apporved by Ghibli.

I adore Miyazaki but...

Like alot of people I discovered anime and Miyazaki through 'Princess Mononoke' and I love most of his films esp 'Totoro' but I'm not as sure about this one. I don't keep up on what is going on with him but I though he had retired and his son had taken over?? Anyway, I'll def check this out when it comes to dvd but I'm not as impressed, it seems to be aimed at alot younger audience and from the trailer I doubt it'll have any of the mature themes that his others have. But so what, I'll still pay to see it :)

I adore Miyazaki!

Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, Kiki's Delivery Service, Castle in the sky.. This film says Hayao Miyazaki all over! Can't wait to see it!

Why Celebs?

While I'm grateful that AE is giving this film a nice publicity bump, I'm once again ticked off by the assumption that a gorgeous animated epic by a celebrated director somehow needs celebrity voices as a selling point. Seriously, does this ever work?

No offense to the actresses, but I'd rather actual voice actors who are familiar with the meduim do these things. Proof positive: compare the English dub of Princess Mononoke (celebrity voices) with Spirited Away (regular voice actors), the difference is pretty obvious.

Sportylady's picture

I agree

I'm a huge Miyazaki fan but I'm a late bloomer.  The first film I saw of his was Howl's Moving Castle in the theater, fell madly in love with the characters and storyline (it's still my favorite).  Because I loved Howl's I decided to watch a lot of his famous films that were distributed by Disney (except Princess Mononoke-but I've seen the end by accident >_<).

He is an AMAZING creator, director, producer...the imagination of a child but can create films that speak volumes to people of all ages.

I thought Spirited Away and Kiki's (very young Kirsten Dunst) had really good voice actors and were a bit more believable then the Hollywood amp'd PM.

I'm psych'd about Ponyo though!  I'm looking forward to it's release.

Miyazaki is freakin SCHWEET!

KiKi's Deliver Service is my FAVORITE! I'm not sure if he made dis this other movie though. It's um My Neighbor Totoro??? (^_^)

thelionqueen's picture

yeah he made both movies. Miyazaki’s

this movie looks really old: im guessing its been released in the 80's in Japan. my favorite movies that he made is spirted away and castle in the sky. i really dont care about totoro and princess whatever her names was.

im not a big fan of him; im not a fan of any one but i respect his work and his art. so his son took over uh? i wanna see what he looks like.

i wont go see this movie mainly because it looks too old fashion for me and i dont care for the plot. it said that Miyazaki is a femenist because of his views and how female characters are protrayed in his movie. the roles often go against the stereotypical female role of japan. he also likes to create his movies for children because of the power that is within youth and innocence.

"children's souls are the inheritors of historical memory from previous generations"-Hayao Miyazaki.

haha

this movie is pretty new considering it came out last year xD

but it looks really old.

Ehh, the English cast is

Ehh, the English cast is really bothering me, if I buy the dvd I'll probably only watch it in Japanese with subtitles. Dubs just... suck, period. I'm not fond of too many.

But the original film how it was meant to be viewed in it's original language is always wonderful. <3

I have loads of respect for Miyazaki-san. So yeah. I can't wait to get it. *jumps up and down*

Kind of Ironic...

...because I more or less had an impromptu Hayao Miyazaki marathon today (Howl's Moving Castle, Castle in the Sky, and Kiki's Delivery Service, with the possibility of Princess Mononoke here in a few minutes).  But Miyazaki has predominately done female leads, or at the very least had a female character as important as the protagonist.  With the possible exception of Porco Rossi (which I still haven't been able to track down), the stories all have that in common...and I wonder how he managed with it, and more importantly, how it will be after localization.  I personally will wait for DVD regardless, just so if the boys voices annoy me then they can all be speaking Japanese.  Here's hoping though, because barring them, I love all the other cast members voices.

p.s. If they were really marketing to the kids obsessed with Anime...Maile Flanagan would have probably been the better choice than Disney's Actor-Matronics.  Just saying.

Frankie and Noah

The Jonas and Cyrus kids, Frankie and Noah, are like 9 yrs old or something so I doubt the tweens will be coming out to see it based on them. If it were Nick Jonas, then I'd worry.

EXCUSE ME

EXCUSE ME,but if you or some peaople think that Ghibri animation is potentially Disney-ficated, that means you DON'T know ANYTHING about Hayao Miyazaki and clearly you've NEVER seen his earlier works!!!

geez how could people think like that!?!?

 NOTHING compared to his works.

Ponyo is another great movie from the director, it looks like it's for kids, but contains alot deeper meanings, as usual.

as japanese i had to say this.

Hayao Miyazaki

I am a huge Hayao Miyazaki fan and my fave is Spirited away, hence my nick. His animations are awesome and very imaginative.. I will definitely be first in line to catch this film!!! Thanks for the heads-up!

:)

miyazaki provided me with a good chunk of happy childhood memories. :)

i remember when ponyo was first coming out in japan about a year ago. couldn't really tell whether to get excited or not honestly. but we'll see. and NOT in the dubbed version. eww.

Nicole's picture

I'll see it on DVD.

My mom and I are both HUGE fans of Hayao Miyazaki, and have seen pretty much every single thing by him, if not all, but I am severely disappointed at this being...English-a-fied. I saw Kiki's Delivery Service in English, and that was great, even with Kirsten Dunst  (I'm pretty sure it was her voice, I can't quite remember), but I don't really like Tina Fey, to begin with. Then, the Jonas Brothers? Even one of them is too much jobro-age for me, sorry.

Anything with the name "Cyrus" really should just not be in such a (probably) great film by an amazing creator. I was really looking forward to this, seeing it in theatres, but I'm just going to wait and buy it when it comes out on DVD, and watch it without the English dubbing. It won't kill to read subtitles for a few hours.

I have seen and enjoyed

I have seen and enjoyed most of the Miyazaki Movies...but i didn't enjoy Ponyo that much..and neither did my friends who are huge Miyazaki fans. We saw it in Japanese with subs last year.

... and i'm also not liking the Dubbing cast... though i'm also not a fan of dubbs... I don't think my friends will be amused by this... I'm curious to know their reaction to this lol.

I know this is a lesbian

I know this is a lesbian site but.. why no mention of any males in film say Liam Neeson!! He's awesome right? He's Aslan? of the voice-over work. Only woulda been a few more words..

I don't care about Cyrus' as long as they're good in the film. I mean the only time Miley or a Cyrus came into my life was Jonathan Ross which I chose to watch and it was entertaining, its certainly no reason for me not to see the film. As long as nobody makes me cringe
