There's a whole lotta love in the new "Harry Potter" trailer

Caution! Cuidado! Vorsicht! The following post is fraught with Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince spoilers. Hang onto your hats, or your Amortentia (love potion, Muggles) or your 3-D Spectrespecs.

Raise your hand if you are going to see Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. Keep your hand raised if you've read the book. Keep your hand raised if you waited in line at midnight to get the book. Keep your hand raised if you cried while reading the book. OK, now, keep your hand up if, after finishing the book, you wore sackcloth and ashes and mourned like Albus Dumbledore was your very own grandfather.

Everyone with their hands still in the air, come sit by me and watch the new trailer. I'll hold you close.

Yep, Potter trailers are dropping like candy. First there was the eerie American teaser with young Tom Riddle, then the international teaser, which was equally spooky with even more delicious images.

Now there is this third unscheduled trailer that Warner Brothers dropped off at Harry Potter fan sites last Friday. It's almost like they're feeling guilty for pushing back the release date eight months. If you remember (and, oh, I do), Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince was originally scheduled to hit theaters this weekend.

The latest trailer is packed full of goodies. (Some old, some new.) Just like the book, you're floating along with Hogwarts' romantic hijinks, and then — BAM! — the bottom falls out and you're chasing Severus Snape through a field while the world burns to the ground.

See:

Romance.

Romance.

Romance. (Damn it, Won-Won!)

Romance.

World's on fire!

Next summer seems so far away.

Can't wait!

Though I did read the book and watch the movie, etc.  I did not stand in line at midnight.  I kinda have to draw the line somewhere.  But I was soooo ticked at WB for pushing the date back when it was so close to release.

Just greed... :(

3rd book...

I got the 3rd book sold at the local Walmart at midnight... And I too was extremely upset at the date being pushed back from this weekend until NEXT July! It was hard enough waiting until NOW to watch the movie...

I too did not stand in

I too did not stand in line at midnight (I made my friend do it for me... work smarter not harder) The movie looks AWESOME but I hope its not like the last one.... The last one left me with some many visual holes, I felt like I was just watchin clips of the book not the actual entire movie of the book you know? But I am rather excited to see this Jenny & Harry thing play out on screen.  And damn it they should feel guilty for pushing it back thats just cruel and unusual punishment, its like banning gay marriage! But alas its still coming not as soon as we'd hope but no worries its on the WAY!

America is like Jessica Simpson... Sometimes she acts so dumb its embarrassing but how about them titties!

I'm so excited....

I remember Half Blood Prince being one of my least favorites, but that trailer got me really excited....hmmm, maybe I reread it before the movie comes out, like a big dork....

okay, stuntdouble... (and uh, beware, spoilers?)

my hand is still up, can I put it down now? I'm one of those slightly crazy Harry Potter book fans - while there weren't any lines at the bookstore, I was the one waiting outside the store at 7am for the store to open, having not slept the entire night in anticipation. I'll admit, I was totally expecting Dumbledore to die so I wasn't in too much shock (the plot of Star Wars Ep IV is the plot for every single sci-fi/fantasy movie and book EVER) but I did have to walk around for a while after I finished reading the book to clear my head going "Snape killed - huh? But I swear Snape's good! NO!!" like the true geek I am.

Evanna Lynch doesn't quite match the Luna I had in my head, and Emma Watson's still wayy too pretty to be Hermione (I have passionate feelings about this particular topic) but I am so, so catching this the first day it comes out, even if I have to battle stupid screaming spoilt kids with their idiotic and doting parents. Maybe I'll yell at them in line "Dumbledore's GAY!" and that'll make the conservative mums scoop their innocent children away from the cinema in an effort to keep them pure and untainted. I'm just kidding, my country's not THAT conservative. Or are we...?

I have to say though, the actors and actresses have REALLY improved over the past few years (though Rupert Grint was always the best!). It's a change from wide-eyed, permanently surprised but adorable Daniel Radcliffe to kind of hunky sulky teenage Daniel Radcliffe. Just please, Emma Watson, give your gorgeous bushy eyebrows a rest and don't overuse them!

Shannon's picture

HA HA HA!!

I'm so glad I'm not the only one who's noticed darling Emma's eyebrows, heaving chest, and horribly over emoting acting!!!  I have all the movies, and it seems like one after another, she gets WORSE rather than better!  I'm waiting for her eyebrows to jump of her face, or her chest to heave right off her body.  LOL.

I'm not hating on Emma, I do like her as Hermione.  I just wish she'd tone the acting down a LOT.

lovecatcadillac's picture

I wish that too. She's a

I wish that too. She's a beautiful, intelligent girl and it would be wonderful to see her give a more nuanced, understated performance, rather than acting with her eyebrows. Maybe once the Harry Potter movies are done and she has the opportunity to explore other roles.

Steve Kloves, who wrote scripts for Harry Potter, has said that Hermione is his favourite character, and that definitely shows. I think he subconsciously wrote Hermione as a little action heroine, when in the books, Hermione was so much more than a girl who went around punching her male friends and enemies when they annoyed her. (Though it was freaking awesome when she slapped Draco Malfoy in the third book. I got up and did a victory dance on her behalf.) The fact that her character had layers and insecurities and grew up so much over the course of the books- that's why so many people all over the world love the character and identify with her, even if on the surface, they don't seem to have a lot in common with her.

miss chatelaine's picture

Didn't Steve Kloves

explicitly admit that he made Hermione's part different? Grrr. I could go on for ages about Action Hermione-Sue, but I won't right now! But I absolutely agree with you on how I identify with Book-Hermione, definitely not Movie-Hermione. She gets sliced down to the curly-haired, gorgeous action hero in the movies, when she's the frizzy-haired, pragmatic, completely nerdy, insecure, book-reliant and not particularly attractive teenager in the books. Again, I won't go on, because if I do I'll probably end up with an extremely long and ranty post... I'm a pathetic geek that way. Emma Watson's really pretty and all that (though her frizzy hair in the Philosopher's Stone was Hermione-like!) but she is no longer Book-Hermione.

Though I REALLY enjoyed the slap in Azkaban. LOVED it!

Heather Hogan's picture

Steve Kloves

He didn't write the script for Phoenix, and I think it really showed because Ron got all the good Ron lines, and he was heroic and hilarious. I really like Emma Watson, and, of course, the camera loves her. But Kloves does give her much different stuff than the book sometimes. Like, in Azkaban, "Does my hair really look like that from behind?" I am so sure book-Hermione would say that.

I just finished Harry, A History (if you're a Potter nut, you'll love it), and in it J.K. Rowling said that Kloves is one of her great friends, but that he really thought Harry and Hermione had potential to be a super couple, especially after the last book. Interesting, no?

miss chatelaine's picture

Interesting, definitely!

I do think he'd been pushing it in the first few movies - I felt Azkaban pushed Harry/Hermione a lot (though GoF kind of forced Ron/Hermione), and that Ron definitely didn't get any Book-Ron-like lines till Phoenix, where Rupert Grint finally got material to shine. Before that, Ron had just been the extra red-headed sidekick best friend who didn't contribute anything, and I hated that. Won-Won has always been, hands down, my favourite character.

Thanks StuntDouble, I'm definitely going to check out that book. Once I get some cash to buy it, that is. Accio, money! No, doesn't work.

"he really thought Harry

"he really thought Harry and Hermione had potential to be a super couple, especially after the last book"

Same feeling here - especially during the Godric's hollow scene in DH that had tons of subtext, at least for me. And I hadn't shipped Harry/Hermione before and was very much looking forward to Ron/Hermione ever after GoF. But when it came I didn't feel it anymore.

Accio Trailer!

Looks like I have to break out my books and reread them again for the Nth time before this film comes out.  I just love them dearly!

I only stood in line at midnight for the last book.  Actually it was very special as the Illustrator of the books was at a local book store and I got two signed copies.

For Potter fans, there is another series out that would rank up there in interest.  It's by the author Michael Scott

The first book is called  The Alchemyst:  The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel (whom you might remember from the Philosopher's Stone)

The second book is called   The Magician

I highly recommend these books which will be a series of 6.  The next one comes out in April of 2009.

I can't wait! I love these books, and so far, the movies are a good time. (Yes I am a nitpicker about some stuff, but that's another day...) I can't believe how nicely the gang has grown up -- you don't always know what you're getting when you hire 11 year olds.

Now I think I need to reread them again!

Harry Potter

I am from Denmark so I read the first three Harry Potter books in Danish. The last four in English.

I remember when we went on a round-trip through Nevada, California, Arizona and other states in 2000 we went to Solvang (a Danish town) and bought Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.

Last summer when Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows was released we were in Farmington, Maine. We had pre-ordered it so we just had to pick it up at midnight. There was a party at the local bookstore and people were dressed up as characters from the books. There was a cake sculpted like a giant spider. They had really done a great job. When we finally got the book in our hands we started reading a couple of chapters, even though it was after midnight before we got back home.

Sorry about the quality. It looked better before I scaled it down.

Harry!

Ah, I love Harry Potter so much! Those books are the kind of books I know I will read again, just because they're so good.

I quite like the movies too...but not half as much as I like the books. The new trailer is looking great, though. I love Luna!

Me, too.

Luna's adorable. She totally matches the imagery I had going on in before the previous film-and that rarely ever happens with books-turned-films for me. Yay.

i visited the set earlier this year cos my dad knows the director and that was SWEEEET! Danial Radcliffe is really small in real life though ;)
Oh and look out for a friend of mine! She's called Isabella Laughland and plays a character called Leanne who is Katie Bell's (girl who gets poisoned i think) friend who witnesses it all! I saw her on set and we were both like "WTF ARE YOU DOING HERE?!" haha
it was awesome :)
i'm annoyed they put it back to summer though
oh and the seventh film is gonna be in TWO PARTS
stretch out the excitement for a bit longer

StunStatus's picture

WHAT!!! 2 PARTS are you

WHAT!!! 2 PARTS are you sure? Don't play with my emotions? I've already stabbed a bastard this week it ain't gon be no problem to make it two hahaha ;o) jk but seriously that would be sooooo much better making the rest of the movies 2 parts because there's soooo much they'll have to cut out trying to fit it all in one and I wanna SEE the book in a movie form not just pieces that leavin so much out and gives you an entirely different perception of what happens unless you read the books.  I wanna see how close the visual in my head are to what they come up with in the movies its fun to compare

HARRY POTTER

Has gotten so bad. the 6th and 7th book were just awful. it was as if JK said "fuck it".

all their doing in that movie is implying sex. so immature. twilight is so much better than the last two books of HP. and twilght is awful.

people eat anything up.

sgrace's picture

Couldn't resist defending HP!

JKR did NOT say "fuck it" - lots of people thought the whole series was good - maybe you're wrong and I'm right! So there!

I'm doing a PhD in English lit, and would not describe myself as the kind of person who "eats anything up" - and I LOVE Harry Potter!!!! All 7 of the series!! (Not the films - don't really like them after the third - but its just my opinion - totally respect anyone's right to love them:-)).

(And why is the implication of sex immature? It's a trailer - designed to suck people in - I doubt very much that it's "all they're doing in that movie")

StunStatus's picture

I agree with sgrace... I

I agree with sgrace... I think Harry Potter was just delicious, the last few books do seem like she pulled a lot of it outta thin air, but thats just because she didn't play on continuing this long I think.  But at the same time I think she completely satisfied what everyone WANTED to happen with Potter but still kept it unpredictable.  I will say tho the 7th book did drag while they were wondering around looking for horuxes, but other than that I'm gonna have to respectfully have to tottaly disagree with you.  And there is no sex if I'm bein honest so they can't be implying it but I'm sure they're trying to provide some intrigue for those who just prefer the movies alone

America is like Jessica Simpson... Sometimes she acts so dumb its embarrassing but how about those titties!

Aerithria's picture

The sixth book was all

The sixth book was all right up until the end, which seemed to have been rushed.

The seventh, however, was terrible. It was badly written, there was obvious mistakes with some of the writing and she turned Voldemort into the dumbest villain alive, where he was so interesting before. Plus, the plot was entirely predictable. Honestly, the entire thing felt like fan fiction.

Basically, J. K. Rowling has issues handling complexity.  The simpler the plotlines, the better she writes. That's why the first four books were ridiculously awesome, whereas the last three declined in quality each time.

New trailer!!!!

Ok at first I didn´t get the whole Harry Potter love, but now I´m kinda obssessed with it (it also took me a while to figure out that I had a crush on Hermione). When I read that Snape killed Dumbledore I was crushed (I also have a crush on Snape cause he is mean).

This movie better be the best thing ever cause pushing it back 8 months is just mean spirited.
