The WNBA All-Star Game airs this Saturday

It's a good time be women's basketball fan. The economy doesn't seem to be slowing down WNBA ticket or merchandise sales; there's talk of a new expansion team heading to Tulsa, OK; the league just earned an A-plus on their diversity report card; and this Saturday, the the WNBA's best go head-to-head in the All-Star Game.

Rosters are as follows:

Eastern Conference Starters:

Tamika Catchings, Indiana

Candice Dupree, Chicago

Sylvia Fowels, Indiana

Alana Beard, Washington

Katie Douglas, Indiana

Western Conference Starters:

Swin Cash, Seattle

Lauren Jackson, Seattle

Sue Bird, Seattle

Becky Hammon, San Antonio

Lisa Leslie, Los Angeles

Well, it would have been Lisa Leslie, but she's out with an injury, and West coach Dan Hughes hasn't named her replacement yet.

The WNBA's evangelical approach to Twitter will surely make this year's All-Star game memorable. Alana Beard and Swin cash will be Tweeting the games from their respective benches: pre-game, post-game, time outs and down time. (@alanabeard20 and @SwinCash) Rebecca Lobo (@RebeccaLobo), Nancy Lieberman (@NancyLieberman) and Carolyn Peck (@CarolynPeck) will be providing official ESPN commentary throughout the weekend. (If you only follow one of those people, go with Carolyn Peck; her liberal use of the word "y'all" is awesome.)

The game starts at 3:30 EST on ABC on Saturday. Who is going to be watching?

Lisa Leslie's replacement

Hey all,

Nicole Powell is going to be replacing Lisa Leslie, which is really exciting because...well...she's just awesome.

YAY

Lisa Leslie got replaced by Nicole Powell, not knocking Lisa Leslie but it will be a lot more interesting.

Of course I will be watching to see Becky Hammon play.

I want DT DT DT

to be starting, I hope she gets some nice playing minutes. Did anyone see where Dupree got a tech. last night in the game against Washington.

I think the West is going to win this one, b/c of how stacked it is from starters to reserves.

Nicole Powell is a good player, i'm happy for her.

DT DT DT.....DETOX DETOX DETOX

There is no way in heck that Diana Taurasi should be playing in the All Star game this weekend, much less representing the WNBA on National TV.

The girl got a dui a few weeks ago and tested twice over the legal limit!

How is that a good role model for the young and old fans who will be watching Saturday?

No doubt, the WNBA front office will make sure none of this is mentioned during the game.  Publicity at a price, I suppose.

 Pathetic.

By the way, I'm not a WNBA hater.  I've been a Sacramento Monarchs season ticket holder since the very beginning.

maggieyeahis's picture

That Detox

thing was funny. I think she should be allowed to play b/c her suspension is up. If the NBA will let players play after their run-ins with the law than let her.

I'm sure she will find a way to work on her image.

Still a DT fan go DT.

DETOX 101 WNBA Style

Funny thing about her suspension.

The Mercury Head Office decided to suspend her for 2 games before the WNBA even said anything publicly about it.  Of course, her 2 game suspension was for 2 games when they really didn't need her....and ....before the All Star break.  (so she could participate?)

That being said...I really do think the WNBA head office had their hand in this decision.  She has played her heart out this season and there is no way in hell she didn't make it in the fan polls as a starter for the All Star team. I know, I know....Seattle fans stuffed the ballot box, just as every team is encouraged to do, but I still smell something fishy.

I think the WNBA heads fixed something to give them more time to decide on Taurasi.

More to say but don't want to appear manic!  lol

Anyway....so much for my conspiracy theory.

Just glad the WNBA All Star Game is on National TV and the league is still here.

BTW.....my friend in Sac was really bad. She brought a hand made sign that half the Mercury bench saw and laughed at.  Of course, I felt awful after hearing she tested twice the legal limit.  Here it is..   DT  Milk Moustache or Gin Grin?

You gotta admit it's classic.  Just not funny anymore

Donna Orender, just in case you're reading and want to talk,  I'm Angela from Sacramento.  You know how to reach me.

Crazy part is DT has gotten mad press

out of this whole thing, and it appears to be making some fellow players unhappy.

I think it was a move to allow her to participate in the All Star game.

"DT  Milk Moustache or Gin Grin?" LOL what makes that funnier is the fact that her own team laughed at it.

It's gonna get brought up during the All Star game for sure. If her court date is in Aug and her team does make it to the playoffs, and she is found guilty that's gonna be ugly.

I totally agree!

I guess you could call it bad timing-if the DUI had happened 6 months ago, I might let her off the hook- but it just happened and is fresh in the minds of the public; she shouldn't play.

DT is a great player, no doubt, and that's why it's even more important that they set an example with her.  She's had and will continue to have opportunities to show her talent at the All-Star game.  I think out of humility and respect for those who have lost a loved one due to irresponsible driving that she should sit this one out.

It's about the game, but I feel like the WNBA can show some class here and hold their players accountable to a higher standard.

I hate "B-Ball"

I hate basketball, but I love the WNBA.

i always thought that the WNBA was a total waste of

money until this one girl from texas named Britney Griner came in the picture(even thought she's a college student and not in the WNBA); she's so hot. have you seen her dunk? OMG!!! if she's a lesbian or bi-or whatever i would totally date her. her dunking are my favorites on my youtube account. i hope she has a successful career though i heard she wanted to do something other than basketball. she's playing for baylor and i really want to see her play so when baylor plays against UT-im  totally going to that game!

NBATV

Stay glued to NBATV for the next 24 hours as well.  Running the 1999 WNBA All Star game right now.  Whitney Houston sang the National Anthem.

Tons of WNBA programming all night and tomorrow.

FYI...programs might be listed as NBA hardwood, but it's really WNBA stuff.

Sooo excited! Especially

Sooo excited! Especially because it's being played in CT and I'm making the drive down from MA to see it live! I've been following Diana Taurasi since she was at UConn so I'm pumped I get to see her, but I'm looking forward to it all!
katemc39's picture

most excellent!

I wish my NY Liberty were seeing some representation, but I'll watch regardless.
stoligirrl's picture

New York Liberty will represent!

Shameka Christon was named as a reserve player for the all star game.

 Your Liberty will be there.

Every team in the WNBA has at least one player on the All Star team this year.

katemc39's picture

in that case...

most excellent, thanks Stoligirrl.

So stoked. I hope to see

So stoked. I hope to see Bird, Cash and Taurasi on the floor together. I hope for some tricks too... less of the East dominance and urge to win. I wanna see something like '05.

Dunks

I will be watching for the dunks, b/c for some reason during all star games is when they start going for the dunks.

and Tina Thompson is replacing her in the starting line-up which is awsome! even though i hate that she is with the sparks now

GO WEST! i wouldn't miss this game for the world. Hope my SA girls, becky hammon and sophia young, and Seattle girls, LJ, Birdy, Cash and of course DT tear up the place

Alana Beard is awesome! Wish

Alana Beard is awesome! Wish more of the Mystics were in the squad, but I'm probably just biased!
avalaurent's picture

Biased, but not alone!

I think Lindsey Harding would have made it if she had been playing like she is now at the beginning of the season.  The girl is on fire lately.

Alana is just plain heroic on the court, so she was no surprise whatsoever.

I voted for Marissa a ton, even though she was out with an injury when voting started and hasn't fully found her groove yet.   It's Marissa Coleman! Trust!

Langhorne is another who has been playing like there's no tomorrow.  Her game against the Sky was amazing.  She's obviously been putting in work.

Go Mystics!  And I hope Alana shows out for the East!

Yeah, so...I still don't

Yeah, so...I still don't like when women dunk. It doesn't look pretty or flashy. Hmm, ok, I take that back...maybe I do like when women dunk, but I hate how folks make a big deal out of it when it's not flashy.
