News, Reviews & Commentary on Lesbian and Bisexual women in Entertainment and the Media

The new "Batwoman" comic is awesomely gay

There's nothing I love more than superheroes and lesbians. I've been around comic books long enough to see some truly infuriating things happen to my favorite characters, and I've been around "lesbian-storytelling" long enough to know that hardly any form of media gets it right. So when DC announced a relaunch of the lesbianBatwoman under the Detective Comics label, I just kind of groaned. What good can come from an all-male team writing a lesbian character in a geared-to-males industry?

Detective Comics #854, that's what!

I finally picked up the first two issues of the new Batwoman storyline, and holy sapphic substance, lesbos: This is easily the best single issue comic published this year.

If you're a regular comics nerd, you have to break reviews down into art and scripting. If you're a lesbian comics nerd you have to talk about what the writers and illustrators got wrong about gay stuff. Only this time, they got it all exactly right.

Because this is the first issue of the new Batwoman storyline, there's a lot Greg Rucka has to tell us about Kate Kane, and he does a brilliant job. Rucka touches on every relationship in Kate's life: the complicated one with her step-dad, the cryptic one with Batman and the tumultuous one with her girlfriend. And though it's lot to cover in a single issue, it doesn't feel rushed.

The sensationalist lesbian thing I feared never materialized. Oh, Batwoman is sexy. She seems to take an almost sadistically sensual approach to interrogation. (I don't know; can you call it sensual if there's a leather boot on your throat?) But her interaction with her girlfriend is authentic and natural.

Kate shows up late for breakfast (again, apparently) and her girlfriend is frustrated and jealous. "I had a late night," Kate explains. (And she did. See: leather boot on criminal's throat.) "Oh, is that what you're calling her?" Anna asks.

It's the same kind of thing that has confounded the best superheroes for decades: Keep disappointing the ones you love, or keep them alive? Superman, Batman, Spider-Man: they deal with it all the time. Which is to say that DC is treating Kate's sexuality in the same way they treat it with their epic male heroes.

Issue #855 is just as good as #854 even thought it doesn't have all the Pow! Bam! Zing! of the premiere Batwoman issue. We do get to learn a little more about Alice, the coven of crime leader who only speaks in lines from Through The Looking Glass.

The art (and layout) of both issues is stellar. Mad props to J.H. Williams III. If Rucker and Williams can keep pace, this will be the best Batman title going.

Let me make myself clear: If you like lesbians or superheroes, stop what you're doing and go pickup Detective Comics #854 and #855.

Anyone else falling in love with the new Batwoman?

GreenBean2's picture

Yup Yup

Been in love with her since her debut in DC, just don't love her haircut. And I don't follow her characters existence in Detective Comics.

She was part of an extremely wealthy Bruce Wayne league family and had lovely long red hair and now she's got this whole goth bowl cut thing going on and I have no idea who the dude with her is. I thought he was her dad but she comes from a priviledge family so...but that's an origin thing I still want moar Batwoman!

And more importantly someone to explain if Batman ever knew about her and how that whole Bat connection came to be.

Renee Montoya/The Question,

Renee Montoya/The Question, and her father are the only ones that know her identity, but Batman knew she was active in Gotham.  She picked up the Bat thing, I think, because it's just the thing to do if you're hanging in Gotham and want to fight crime.  At some point, Nightwing had a crush on her and gave her a batarang, which was unofficially accepting her into the Bat-family.  Sort of.  Rucka has said in interviews that they'll delve into her origin story in issues later this fall, and I imagine we'll find out that the privileged part will be on her (dead) mother's side, even though that's a bit of a retcon.

Disarming in a new way.

This is so refreshing. I'm so glad Batwoman is finally getting the good stuff this year in comics.

Anyone else notice how Batwoman seems to disarm Alice very casually? :D

So good!

I loved these Batwoman comics! I can't wait for the next issue. I also really liked the The Question storyline with Renee Montoya as the second story in the issues (she's also a lesbian! DC Comics is so delightfully gay!)

And I love the artwork in both issues, especially all the splash pages of Batwoman in action.

That's so hott

The question is awesome too.  I love the story lines. They should make this into a movie and I should make the script I surely wont let the Batwoman fans down!

It's good, but not mind-blowing yet.

Rucka's great, and he obviously is into portraying decent characterizations of lesbians, but considering what we've had before, the definition decent is really really large.  I'm enjoying TEC so far, but Kate Kane definitely hasn't won me over (Renee Montoya already had, but then this last issue with her... yeesh).

The art in the Batwoman part is downright beautiful, and the art in the Question section is great, in a different way, but, as much faith as I have in the writing/artist team that's working on it, the story so far hasn't really been perfect.  Kate Kane's not a sensationalist lesbian (and I didn't expect her to be, after reading Rucka's stuff with Montoya in Crime Bible and FinalInfiniteMega Crisis), but she's highly sexualized when she's Batwoman.  Sort of par for the course of women in comics, but it just comes off strange (e.g. she's got nipples drawn into her costume, and I don't know any other female hero in the DCU that does).

It's great to have lesbian visibility in comics, but it's definitely not perfect.

Yeah, if there's one thing we know about lesbian storylines....

....it's that they often start out great, and get worse with time. I give you Callica...or for that matter, Karolina Dean in the Runaways. (I love Karolina, but I think her romance with Xavin was really undeveloped.)

At this point I won't join in until the series has been going on for a while and seems to be consistently good. I've been suckered by comics before...

Also, I have to say that I hate Batwoman's new look. The super-white skin, the lurid red color of her hair, the dull flat bob....all of it is extremely creepy to me, more apt for a villain. I hope AfterEllen continues to cover this series, as it's going to take some time to build my trust.

And if it gets better and becomes mind-blowing, hey, that'll be a win!

Looove it

I'm really, really enjoying this series so far! The story is a great mix of action, drama and mystery, the art is terrific and Kate Kane is a serious badass. Bonus: The Renee Montoya/The Question story is also awesome. Lesbian crimefighters FTW!

I trust Greg Rucka implicitly

Greg Rucka has been writing lesbian characters well for ten years, and he's one of few authors that I trust. (Check out Gotham Central, especially the "Half a Life" story arc.) If anyone was going to screw up, it was the editor(s), and thankfully, they've put good human story ahead of shrivelled marketing-advisor balls. (Unlike so many. *coughCBScough*)

I admit I started buying the Batwoman run because she's a superhero chick in the batverse and (bonus) she's gay, but this story & art are so astoishing, I don't care why I started buying it. Now I love it for it. Rucka's creepy, crazy villainess and J.H. William's goth/vamp Batwoman had me at hello. (Doesn't hurt that Kate's subtly nippin'-out in her batsuit, either. ;) And short-haired Renee in the second-feature... *sigh*)

I truly hope these two continue together on another Batwoman arc. This is comics gold. My local shop sold out in a day because half of everyone are adding it to their regulars.

queers, quandries and quashing...

what more could you ask for?  How about amazing artwork by J.H. Williams III, the creative genius illustrating Alan Moore's fascinating and original "Promethea" series.  DC has put a powerhouse team on this series so I have high hopes for stories that will have some authenticity to our community, rather than the comic book equivalent of tv's lesbian sweeps week.

You should also check out Rucka's graphic novel, "the Question: the five Books of blood."  Renee Montoya is the new Question.  The only thing I found a tad strange was the sidekick similarities in Batwoman and the Question.  Must be a case of lesbian merging.

Very dissapointed with the changes

I don't like the way they had to lezz her up. Goth look, a few tatts. Did they really have to completely change her. She also looks much younger.  Seriously when I turned the page to see the scene with her girlfriend before reading it, I thought she was talking to her mother.

Did they think we weren't going to notice the changes.

I also don't like how her wig is attatched to her mask. WTF!

OH OH Renee, what the hell is with her short blonde hair.

Extreme makeover for the worst.

Very dissapointed.

Tina's picture

so right

Exactly! i miss Katherine's long locks. she looks like a Hot Topic employee with that haircut and the clothes. she looks way too young, so the scene with her girlfriend is kind of weird.

As for Renee, her haircut doesn't look that bad. don't know what's up with the blonde hair though.

anyway, i agree. dissappointed

MetalHead's picture

Renee's hair

Renee is actually a brunette - it's only when she puts on the mask and uses the binary gas that her hair and clothes change colour, as can be seen here:

Not completely a make-over

what was done with Kate. The tattoos are real military ones. The star is an old (iirc) WW2 'good luck' and the arm one is a 7th special forces one. My general impression with what GR said in interviews it seems like the military was a big part of her life/is of her origins. Her father also has the rank of col. which is the highest (BIG IF) I remember correctly its the highest rank in the special forces when you work in the field. JH and GR definately did their research on this.

Dunno about her hair though. Combat- and secret wise idendity wig makes sense. Personally I prefer the short. Really tired that most female heroes look alike so much (long thick hair) with only colour to tell them apart often x.x

Greg Rucka

has always written women characters extremely well. He is one of the few men I trust to write an interesting, strong and smart woman character. Read Queen and Country, especially if you like the British show MI-5, and Whiteout.

Love it, but...

Im not a fan of the physical changes they made, but the storyline is great (so far).

Now if the Dani/ Finch thing goes well in Witchblade, it will truly be a great time for lesbian comic lovers =)

I'm stopping by the comic

I'm stopping by the comic book store tomorrow, so I'll check it out. Typically I hate DC comics, they're just so unreliable and stupid (I realize that 'stupid' is a lazy adjective, but it applies too aptly). But, we're going away for the weekend, and I hate the book I'm reading, so some extra comics might be fun to have.

Holy detailed artwork, Batman!

Even if the story sucked, I'd get this just for the art! I haven't bought any single-issue comics in forever (I prefer them in TPB form) I'm going to have to pick this up at drool lovingly all over its pages.

Okay, you've piqued my curiosity...

I'm not a comic book geek. I swear. But I love graphic novels. (Don't judge.)

"You're smart, you're sexy, you've got a sense of humor, and you don't think fabrics begin and end with flannel."

This dialogue balloon alone got my thought balloon's attention. Thanks for the heads-up.

I love Batwoman!

I started reading 52 a few days ago in Borders and now I run to the comic shop before my bus comes. Batwoman is so cool and so effortlessly sexy. I found the fight with Anna and the kiss with Renee to be very authentic and well, poignant. I luurrvved her response to the 'Hubba Hubba!' dude XD If there will soon be a DC comics movie with a woman as the superhero I so hope it's Batwoman instead of WonderWoman. I find Kate Kane (Batwoman) to be 10 X cooler :) To answer your question StuntDouble, yes, I'm falling in love with Batwoman too :) Check out the lesbian tattoo on her back hehe

Duh.

"I don't know; can you call it sensual if there's a leather boot on your throat?"

Ohhh yes.  Ahem.

Love it

I am a comic nerd, but I can definitely see those who aren't getting into Batwoman.  I had been waiting for the release of #854 for months. I went to my local comic book shop on that Wednesday, and they had sold out in just a few hours. I managed to pick up a copy a few days later while visiting my friends in Minneapolis. I loved it! I knew Rucka wouldn't disappoint, but he has exceeded my expectations. Thankfully, when I went to pick up #855 the other day, my local place had plenty in stock. I really like where the story is going. The tension between Batwoman and Alice was nice. A few frames really grabbed my attention. It was (mildly) sexualized violence that didn't make me roll my eyes or whip out my women's studies rhetoric.

I'm glad Kate will be around for at least a year. I can't wait to see how Elegy ends, and I'm also really looking forward to the next arc, which is going to delve into her back-story, including the kidnapping. I actually like what they've done with her, appearance wise.  Of course, it's hard not to like her look with all of Williams's GORGEOUS artwork. The fight scenes are mindblowingly beautiful.  The only thing I'm not really a fan of is the bob. I think she looked better in the frames when her hair was "messed up". Whatevs. If that's the only complaint I have about what I've seen so far, I'm going to call it a definite win.

Oh, and I also really love The Question as a second feature.

Yay!

I actually...squeled when I saw this....

The imagery, the story of this comic...oh, I am so getting this and soon.

Loving it

The look on Kate's face as her girlfriend ditches her at the restaurant is pure Peter Parker.  Bruce Wayne never had much success with women (barring a few exceptions like Catwoman and Talia) but it never seemed like it mattered THAT much to him when he'd piss off the zillionth supermodel by standing her up.  You can tell that this bothers Kate much much more.  I'm hoping we see a good dose of this downside to superheroics in the book.

It's a great juxtaposition to have with her dominating alter ego.  Loser with the ladies in her civilian life--but smooth and supremely successful once she puts the mask on.

I usually pick up whatever Greg Rucka as writing because I trust him implicitly.  Especially with female characters.

Digging on that art too...

I just have to comment on

I just have to comment on the amazing artwork in these first two issues of the Batwoman/Detective Comics arc... JH Williams III is just a fantastic artist - so detailed and layered and he's just the ultimate talent in visual storytelling.

And this is coming from a lifelong Marvel-fangirl. Well, no more. I'm so loving every issue of Detective Comics featuring Kate. I'm devouring each page, revelling in them.

The double-page spreads in each issue really stand out and are pure masterpieces.

I cannot wait for next month.

Walked into the local comic

Walked into the local comic store for the first time ever. Picked up the two issues and can finally relate to 'saving' an issue for focused reading. Bravo JHW you have a new fan-

Elisabeth's picture

I'm not really a comic book fan

BUT I did buy those two comics just to see whether or not I'm going to be interested in the storline and she looks awesome when she's batwoman. If I like the comics then $3-$4 is not that much to pay to buy each issue and it looks like it's worth giving a chance.

Looks good are you...

Going to post subsequent issues or portions thereof?  If so may I suggest that you nhance the images making them sharper so they will be easier to read,  Sharpening images is easy if you have Photoshop or any image editor.
