Taylor Swift goes subtly gay on an "SNL" sketch

Maybe I was punch drunk from spending the day watching the Health Care Reform debate on C-Span or something, but this weekend, Taylor Swift made me laugh louder than any Saturday Night Live host/musical guest in recent memory. I giggled particularly hard at her opening monologue, the Twilight spoof and the Bunny Business promo (which we'll get to later), but the best sketch of the night was "Roomies."

And by "best" I mean "gayest."

And not gay in that subtext-y "Oh, those two chicks have chemistry" kind of way, but in the "Someone secretly filmed every date I went on in high school and college and turned it into an SNL skit" kind of way.

Any time anyone Googles the phrase "How do I know if I'm a lesbian?" that video should be the first result.

Let's just break down the gayness:

1) Girl is on a date with a boy, but rather than making out, they are watching a dramatization of the Napoleonic wars.
2) When boy suggests they make out, girl just punches him in the arm.
3) Girl's enthusiasm increases exponentially when her female roommate gets home.
4) Girl and female roommate embrace and bemoan the fact that they were apart for two whole hours.
5) Roommate plops down on couch between boy and girl, and girl does not protest.
6) Girl invites roommate to join them, and says they will ...
7) wait for her to get into her jammies.
8) Roommate calls from bedroom to ask if boy is still there, and returns with snacks to ...
9) distract him so that she can ...
10) cuddle with girl and say things like:
11) "You are my everything."
12) "You're my world."
13) "Quit your job so we can spend more time together."
14) "I love you."
15) "I missed you."
16) And then share an inside joke complete with rhymes and hand motions, while boy is forgotten on couch.

I actually think my college boyfriend might be writing for SNL now. How else could they know?

Taylor's monologue was cute and self-deprecating ("I've been wanting to host this show ever since I was a little kid. I remember staying up past my bedtime to watch Bill Hader and Andy Sandberg.") Bonus props to her for barely mentioning the Kanye West VMA debacle.

The Digital Short, Firelight, by the makers of Twilight, was spot on, and especially funny considering the rumors that Taylor is courting Team Jacob in real life.

And most of the cast had a chance to shine on the Bunny Business soundtrack:

Sigh. I am starting to suspect that I am in actual love with Kristen Wiig. Wait — that's not what we were talking about, was it? What were we talking about?

Oh, right — Taylor Swift. It's always dicey when a musician agrees to host and sing on SNL, but I think Swift was fresh and hilarious. She gave herself over to the sketches like an improv pro. I think she might really be able to act.

Did any of you catch SNL on Saturday night? How many of you have been on/crashed dates like the one in the "roomies" sketch?

    That snl episode was

That snl episode was probably the most i've laughed at one for a while. Missed the beginning sketches, because i was checking out Sykes. Taylor was a great sport for agreeing to whatever and did really well. Loved the Shakira impersonation.

p.s. Kristen Wiig is awesome! As Penelope: 'My feet take me off to go to sleep'. Hilarious!!

It's funny how when the Roomies sketch started and I saw Andy Samberg on the couch I thougt about that one Ellen Page skit. And then some how I instantly knew this skit was leaning towards gay. It was pretty funny like when she was saying Bennet, the butch way she was sitting and the whole dragging bit. I missed most of the show because I was watching Wanda Sykes' show and then Austin City Limits but I'll check it out on Hulu.

    had the exact same thought,

had the exact same thought, about Ellen Page's sketch... I don't know if they used the same set but it was definitely a similar feel even once it got going.

I've found that a lot of people actually enjoyed the episode but have been almost embarrassed to admit it because of how terrible SNL has been for so long.  I guess I'm in that group too, haha.

    StuntDouble's picture

    Karman thought the same thing!

I meant to add that into my post. Good catch!

    Fresh and hilarious

Indeed!! Loved the show, she was very natural and it seems she was really comfortable doing the show.

And I would like to share  this link about Taylor Swift when she was a guest in the Ellen Degeneres's Show last month... really funny :)  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YGth7aSd0EM

    I was pleasantly surprised

I was pleasantly surprised by the latest SNL. Taylor's not too bad an actor. The roommates bit was dead on, too, very clever.

The Bunny Business sketch was funny as well, all of the cast and Taylor did a great job. PS: Keenan Thompson doesn't look too bad in drag haha.

    StuntDouble's picture

    Kenan in drag

My BFF and I were talking about that last night. He really does look excellent in drag!
    Sade's picture

his best drag I think was

his best drag I think was the lunch lady on All That! I miss that show.

    Heyyyy Bennett!!!!!

I loved her in snl. I thought some of the sketches we're kind of poorly written, but she did a really good job for what she had to work with. She's a pretty good actress. I do agree snl has gotten pretty lame over the years. Kristen Wig is probably one of the funniest on that show.

    Great episode!

I really liked all of Taylor's skits and I thing she looked awesome in the prison one (though I did not like her singing on the show. ha), but Amy's appearance was by far the best part of the episode! I had to pause it so that I could relax and stop jumping up and down and missing everything she was saying.

And then the Penelope skit. hehe.

    Finney's picture

    haaaaaaaaaaaaa

Best post!!!!!!!!! I only got to see half of the show. thanks for posting those skits

    kristen wiig cracks me up.

    rusty_tiffany's picture

    oh taylor swift

oh taylor swift. you're so freaking adorable. her music is a little irritating sometimes, but it's nice to see that she doesn't take herself (or the ridiculousness of most of her lyrics) too seriously. this was legit funny, i'm impressed.
    shenka's picture

so tay gives no gay vibe for anyone?

a couple young cousins of mine went through Hendersonville High when Taylor was there, they stayed on and graduated after she left.  They say the inside talk about her was she was a pillow queen, she never gave so didn't consider herself to be bi. Also it was rumored that her fiddle player Emily that had been with her for a couple years and was suddenly gone was fired because she was caught "relieving Tay's stress in an inappropriately oral manner."  No idea if there was any truth to any of it, or if it was just jealous high school manufactured gossip.  She was always very close to her close girlfriends and still is as can be seen in the end of this home video she made http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8w4A1vVaNmE  Maybe the SNL skit was co-written by Taylor herself if she has first-hand experience at running off boyfriends because she and her best friends are too close.  I have to say I never get a gay vibe from her myself, and she always is such a sweet and adorable person you can't help but love her.

    foxy_boo's picture

    I wouldn't say that I get a

I wouldn't say that I get a gay vibe from her, because I haven't seen enough appearences of her, but I really love her music and I have to say I've always identified with her lyrics and thought they "translated" really well for lesbians.

    sucre's picture

I also dont get a gay vibe

I also dont get a gay vibe from Taylor. You dont really need to see many appearances to get a vibe but with Kristen Stewart I kind off get a 'bi' vibe from her.
    OrBabylon's picture

    Vibe

I've seen her on a couple of different talk shows and I do get that vibe from her. It's either that or she has someone very close to her that is gay. She just has a comfort around the subject that you don't see all the time.
    Aya's picture

She did do an overall good

She did do an overall good job, but it was all about Roomies.
    867-5309's picture

    No suspecting here

I don't suspect, I KNOW, I'm in love with Kristen Wiig. Sigh.
    Shandizzle's picture

    I think I'm now...

    in love with "Swifty"

She's absolutely adorable, and seems like an all around good person from what I've seen.

Also, I thought that about the Ellen Page sketch. Poor Andy's characters can't bark up the right tree for anything...

    rainbow_flowers's picture

    did anyone else catch..

at the end of the view skit they did where taylor played kate gosslin kenan was like on next weeks episode are guests will be wanda sykes and kristen stewart, was that suppose to be a lesbian joke or something (with kristens lesbian thing being taken outta context)
    monica_ca's picture

    Loved the whole episode

I was pleasantly surprised at home absolutely hilarious Taylor Swift was. Not all of the sketches were over the top hilarious, but I think that the problem was the actual sketches, and not Taylor's acting ability. I loved the parents' driving habits PSA, and of course, the roommates one was very 'yay gay!' haha
    reanbean's picture

    ahahahahahahaha

That Natalie Merchant impression was HILARIOUS

And Keenan in drag is so funny. Both as Whoopi and Jennifer Hudson. Hahahaha I'm still laughing.

Omg. this has been on of my favorite SNL episode ever. Even with the super awkward skit of The View.

     BEEENNEETTTTT. hahahaha

    KanyeKane78's picture

    Loved It!!

This has got to be one of the best SNL's I have seen in a very long time.. Not only was Taylor Swift hysterical, but AMY POEHLER came back, which is amazing all on it's own.. There were a couple throw away sketches (Swine Fever?), but it was a lot less then what I have come to expect from SNL. The Roomies sketch was great, as was Bunny Business (I can't get the "Shakira" song out of my head, "..bunny girls hop on your bunny boys..", genius!), but how has no one mentioned the Parental Driving PSA? I lost it when Kristen Wiig was singing the wrong lyrics to Lady Gaga's "LoveGame" and hit the pedestrian. Her facial expression was priceless!

Overall- Great episode, SNL should definitely invite Ms. Swift back.

    demoiselle cyan's picture

    ha yeah although

I WANTED TO SEE SOME KISSING from the obsessive roomies... Hahaha I also liked when she did the Shakira skit... so funny. And she looked so pretty doing the Twilight skit, hahaha "Who are them??" "Those are the Franks"... the dark hair suited her very well.

    The bestest

I would have to say that the part that really cracked me up in the Roomies sketch was when Taylor pulled the girl and the couch halfway across the room.

    "no"-Tug-"No" Tug-"No" Tug-"No" Tug-"No" Tug-"No" Tug-"No" Tug-"No" Tug-"NO" Tug-"NoooOOooo".

Those plaintive cries of distress were the clincher for me.

    Alicia's picture

    bhahah

i forgot about that part. that was hiliarious noooooooo!! nooooooooo!!! ahaha

    Class Act

Taylor Swift is one "class act". The way she has handled and is still handling the Kanye West incident is absolutley awesome.
    rayray's picture

    :)

How much more freakin adorable could Taylor Swift be?! The Roomies sketch was pretty cute. I can totally relate to being up my roommates ass in college haha

    I really enjoyed....

that skit...hahaha. My crush on Miss Swift has increased.
    groovitational.pull's picture

    Oh boy..

That skit is just about every relationship I've had with a best friend.

    Minus the uber-annoyingness...I think.or hope :/

Then again, I'm still in high school, but that is definitely not far from the truth.

    I USED TO...

i used to "hate" her...to dont care about her, but now IM SO DEEPLY IN LOVE with Taylor!!!!!i mean, she is beautiful, talented,. a "home" girl, and there is nothing better and cute than a girl with a very good sense of humor!!aahhh-sigh-wish u were a lesbian...or at least bisexual Xp...
    Natasha's picture

    Wasn't expecting it

but Taylor definitely rocked the skits posted in this article! I never would've guessed she had it in her - esp the Shakira impression. But I love how she was spot on with Kristen Stewart's tucking her hair behind her ear thing. TS isn't nearly as annoying as I'd previously thought, and I hope she continues on with more comedy acting. Mad props!

i couldnt get my eyes off the tv

the eoomies skit was so cute, and haha i did not expect it to go there whatsoever! but yeah it made me think of the times when i'd hang be hanging with a girl friend watching tv or a movie and all of a sudden they want to cuddle... made me wonder "really? where is this coming from?"

it also made me wish i was best friends with tswift haha.
