"Survivor: Samoa" has a lesbian contestantIt's impossible to keep up with every thing that happens on TV on Thursday nights. That's our only excuse for not catching this sooner: According to GLAAD's TV blog, this season's Survivor Samoa has a 45-year-old lesbian contestant named Shannon Waters from Renton, Washington. Or maybe you know her as "Shambo."
We know, we know. One look at those photos and your gaydar is pinging like a pinball machine after a lightning strike. We would have never missed it if this had happened on a Wednesday night. Anyway, Shmabo has lasted four weeks on Survivor Samoa so far, even though she hasn't had a lot of luck. Apparently, she's calling her team "90210" and has bonded better with the Foa Foa tribe. She says her team doesn't accept her for who she is, which may be true. But also, she broke their fishing equipment and lost their chicken. (I love Survivor. When else do you get to write: "and then the lesbian lost the chicken"?)
According to her profile on CBS.com:
Translation: lezzie, lezzie, lezzie, lezzie, lezzie. (Also, her sexual orientation been confirmed by Reality Blurred and GLAAD.)
One super cool note about Shambo: she lost four pant sizes and 70 pounds to make it onto this season of Survivor. Maybe after this is over, she can be the guest gay on Jackie Warner's new show, Thintervention. We've got a couple of official Survivor promos from CBS that feature Shambo. In the first, she talks about her thirst for knowledge.
In the second, she talks about fitting in with the opposing tribe.
I love a woman with a good self-deprecating sense of humor.
Is anyone watching Shambo on Survivor Samoa? How long do you think she'll stick around? Submitted by on October 15, 2009 - 12:00pm. |

I don't know
I've been watching and she has made a couple of big mistakes. She lost the mouthpiece to the scuba gear a couple weeks ago and lost a chicken last week. I'm rooting for her but don't know if she will make it very far.
PEACE!
Yeah
...Not to mention telling the boys the clues to finding the immunity idol (which one of them found and, of course, ain't sharing).
The only reason she's made it this far is because she's on a team that's won the bulk of the challenges...but right now she's just living on borrowed time.
That said, I hope that AE gets a post-elimination interview with her. It'd be interesting to hear about her experience in the military.

i like watching survivor
i thought i heard shambo say she has a husband i dont know maybe im wrong
but yeah she needs to go she has made to many mistakes
Im not crazy, my reality is just different then yours.
I watch this show every week
Post-win plans: Ellen.
She's stated that if she wins, she wants to go on the Ellen Degeneres Show. Hmm. . . . ;)
I can't find anything where she officially states a sexual preference, but I'd bet she's hetero just to screw with the world a bit--it seems that's how the universe works; anybody that ticks that many sterotype boxes has to be a fluke.
Though “I’ve always been famous, so I’m now I’m taking it to the next level, baby" (same source) kinda makes me want to root against her more than a little bit. Reality check, please.

Not trying to be offensive, but...
The way that she speaks and presents herself kinda reminds me of Aileen Wuornos, lol. 'Tendons, diseases...'
She doesn't seem crazy or violent or anything, it's just her voice and body language, slight wackiness and the hobo-ish appearance.
Hip To The Beat, Mommie-O!
She totally looks like
She totally looks like Charlize Theron in "Monster".
Right?
my thoughts exactly.....
I dont know about anyone else on here...
how long will Shambo last
Do we know she's gay for sure?
DId she actually "come out" on the show or are you just assuming she's gay?
I saw her awhile back and thought she was gay, but hey, you never know. I am curious if she has come out. I only watched 5 minutes of the first episode. I could never get into Survivor.

I could of sworn....
LOVE survivor
Survivor is by far my favorite show like...EVER.
I love Shambo. She provides someone 'real' as I like to call her. Her and Russel (the d-bag who I absolutely love and I hope he wins) are the only people with real personality. You have the cookie cutter girls, the ONE asian (really survivor?), and the charming mr. nice guy doctor. Then the other guys I think I have heard mentioned like once on the show. I saw some guy last week I didn't even know was on the show.
Survivor has got to diversify a bit.
BUT...back to Shambo
she won't make it long. She's next to go on Galu if they lose. However I don't think Foa Foa is going to make it.
And you're right, my gaydar (if any) is like a blazing alarm everytime she comes on screen
So...
Because she rides a Harley, looks like Aileen Wuornos plus GLAAD and Reality Blurred have outed her, this makes her a lesbian? If we're going to judge people on their appearances, half my neighbors are rednecks, the other half are racist and I'm stuck in the middle.
I thought we'd come further than this, jumping to a conclusion, regardless of how much 'evidence' one thinks she does or doesn't have. I feel this sort of media coverage and commentary make us as a community follow the whole 'one step forward, two steps back'.
There have been at least four contestants who have 'looked gay' and haven't been.
Each to their own, though, if you all see her a lesbian, then you do!
Sources (once more, with feeling!)
I am not saying that Shannon (Shambo) is a lesbian based on the fact that she "rides a Harley, looks like Aileen Wuornos."
GLAAD, the most reliable source of information about gays and lesbians on TV, has repeatedly commented that she is a lesbian.
Reality TV Blurred reported it directly from the first CBS press release back in August.
I haven't personally spoken with Shambo or anything, but it's hardly jumping to a conclusion when two reliable sources cite her as gay.
We often gently poke fun at lesbian stereotypes, which is what I was doing when I called her "lezzie, lezzie, lezzie, lezzie." I think you'll find that kind of teasing in any minority community.
Hope that clears things up. :)
I don't think she is....
Just wanted to put it out there...
I have a husband and I'm a lesbian. Actually my husband (or 'wasband' as I lovingly refer to him) and I have been separated for 8 years after I came out in '01. Shannon looks to be close to my age and there are many of us who knew we were gay, but married because of societal pressures. I'm not saying that she definitely is a lesbian, but just that it's possible to be married to a man AND identify as gay. It's not easy, but it's possible.
Cheers!
Please Don't Think
I was attacking anyone personally, StuntDouble, because I know we're all entitled to our own opinions. I don't trust something until I hear it from the horse's mouth, so until Shannon herself, if she chooses to, decides to come out, I won't believe it! :)
I know there's teasing in any community, but I always seem to watch it fly over my head... thereagain I am kooky like that... :)
:)
Until she comes out...
Oh God.
The token lesbian. Lovely.
And I'm pretty sure she looks exactly like my PE teacher in 8th grade! Ha!
