Supervillainesses we'd like to see on screenIf you're going to make a comic book film that will echo in the minds and hearts of moviegoers, you've got to have a villain that's as super as the hero. Heath Ledger will get an Oscar nomination for his role as The Joker in The Dark Knight, and he should — not because of Ledger's untimely death, but because his portrayal of the clown prince of darkness is what nightmares are made of. It doesn't take terror to make a good villain, though; some of the best comic book bad guys have been more clever than they are evil. Thing is: most of them have been men. So, here's my casting advice for the next set of superhero movie villains. And by "villain" you know I mean "villainess." Talia al Ghul, Aishwarya Rai Liam Neeson played Ra's al Ghul in Batman Begins. As imposing as his portrayal was, Neeson didn't really fit the build of the original comic book character. Aishwarya Rai, though? She would be the perfect actress to play al Ghul's daughter, Talia. In the comics, she is in constant turmoil between her devotion to her psychotic dad and and her moral compass, which seems to point in the same direction as Batman's. The actress who plays Talia as Ghul has to be, above all, a seductress. Here's a litmus test: Could Aishwarya Rai seduce you? Yeah, that's what I thought. Sign her up. Catwoman, Selma Blair I'm talking about something better than Michelle Pfeiffer's secretary-scorned Catwoman in Batman Returns. I'm talking about a villainess who won't play second-fiddle to Batman. I'm talking about a gorgeous feminist who has a social conscious, but just plain old like to rob things. Selma Blair would own that Catwoman. I've already developed the movie's tagline: Mrowr! Star Sapphire, Eva Greeen In the DC universe, Star Sapphire is a lot of people, but what's important is that she's a queen. She straddles the line between good and bad: taunting, besting and seducing The Green Lantern at every turn. She's an ethereal beauty, who is sometimes pink and sometimes green. Eva Green is an ethereal beauty who would look good in either. Poison Ivy, Emily Blunt and Julia Stiles, Harley Quinn These two have a love/hate relationship with The Joker. In the comic books, The Joker kicks Harley Quinn to the curb, and Poison Ivy find her and nurses her back to health. In my version of the movie, neither of them would return to The Joker. Instead, Julia Stiles as Harley Quinn and Emily Blunt as Poison Ivy would pursue their, er, common interests together. I mean together together. Batman wouldn't stand a chance.
What actress do you think would make a great comic book villainess? Would you recast my choices? Go on, the world needs more lesbian superheroes! Submitted by on July 22, 2008 - 1:00pm. |

Michelle Pfeiffer
Catwoman
I agree that Michelle Pfeiffer was fantastic.
I'm not arguing with the choice of Selma Blair, but that image of Catwoman is eerily similar to this photo from the always delightful (ok, or not) ANTM. Is there a Spiderwoman?
I'd love to see more of Eva Green in anything. She's stunning. I still get palpitations at the thought of that scene in Casino Royale when she's doing her make-up.
Other than that, I don't know much about comic book villains, but I'll happily watch that one with Poison Ivy and Harley Quinn. Yay!
i like the poison ivy/harley quinn comic story line
I would buy/read the comic and then hope the movie version would come out..
But I have to agree, catwoman for me will always be michelle pfeiffer, shje was smokin!
sounds (looks) good
I think a lot of that might
Indians, pfff
That's most of what I meant. The "good indian girl" complex will drive me crazy one day. Don't think her in-laws would ever allow her to play an overtly sexual role now. I guess I'd love the opportunity to judge her on that, though. Might change my perception of her.
Catwoman...
...To me Catwoman will always be Michelle, but I'm open to persuasion. Maybe a blonde Kate Beckinsale, actually any Kate Beckinsale. *drifts off momentarily* Oh! Right, villainesses, I like the rest of your choices. I see Emily blunt as more of a Barabara Gordon/Batgirl/Oracle kind of girl. We all know Huntress needs a mentor. *winks*
If homophobes always think what they've always thought, then they'll always get what they've always got...my foot have way up their
I can see Emily Blunt as
I can see Emily Blunt as Oracle. Not so much as Batgirl.
And I can see Kate Beckinsale as Catwoman / Selina Kyle. She always looks good in skin-tight leather. Dark hair though. I don't know but a blonde Catwoman just doesn't seem right to me.
YEAH....
...I can totally see that. You're right Batgirl would have to be someone....else.

Aces
Hahaha, Catwoman.
I must admit, Selma Blair would make a hot Catwoman.
But I was named after the Michelle Pfeiffer one, so I suppose she'll always be the 'real' one for me.
On the other hand, Poison Ivy and Harley Quinn? Yum.
Good choice on the Emily
Good choice on the Emily Blunt-Ivy casting. I wouldn't cast Julia Stiles as Harley, though. I would cast... hmm... Kristen Bell, maybe. Or Naomi Watts
Oh, Harley and Ivy totally had a thing going on in my version of the story, too. In the animated series from the 90's Harley and Ivy were, like, living together and they shared a bedroom and they would walk aroud the house half naked all the time and acting all snuggle-y, which was just strangely obvious.
Harley
Emily Blunt
uh no she wouldn't.
uh no she wouldn't.

I agree. Ellen Page as
I agree. Ellen Page as Harley just, no. I love her as an actress, but I can't see her as Harley.
Then again, I never thought I'd see Heath Ledger as the Joker. Especially a Joker as sinister as the one in The Dark Knight.
Good Choices...
wow she's a fan? that's
wow she's a fan? that's cool ok I'm for Kristen Bell for Harley!

Genius
Stunt Double
As a huge DC fangirl I VERY much approve. Great list. Now if only Hollywood could do any sort of superhero film with a female lead or strong supporting character.
When someone like a Whedon treatment of Wonder Woman gets dumped and the Batverse ignores the strong female characters of it's own universe (alas poor Barbara Gordon reduced to 'Gordon daughter' in the credits of the most recent film) it's just sad.
Even sadder....
...They wouldn't even show her face. This was a the only thing that made my Dark Knight experiance a bit less enjoyable. Barbara Gordon need s her own movie!!!

okay so
the harley quinn/poison ivy thing totally reminded of this cartoon:
ahaha.
well, he is batman....
Janet: Everybody's talking about it.
Amy: About what?
Janet: How you met Lucy and lived to tell about it. They're calling you a hero, when really you're a slut.
Amy: You shut up
Janet: A gay slut.
This made me laugh so hard.
LOL
I think I just scared a co-worker walking by my office when I laughed out loud!

Black Cat?
Scarlett Johansson as Black Cat? She's definitely got the body!
Uma Thurman as Emma Frost?
