"Sugar Rush" comes to the States

Those of you familiar with the award-winning British series Sugar Rush will be glad to know that that here! TV will begin airing season one on Feb. 6. Those of you unfamiliar with Sugar Rush (those of you, for example, who understand lesbian teenage drama within the hand-holding confines of South of Nowhere) better hang on to your baseball caps.

Where Ashley and Specer's shenanigans generally included hair-braiding, Scrabble night and sometimes having caffeine after 9:00, Kim and Sugar are into more legitimate adolescent hijinks, like making out in public and sharing bubble baths and plotting escapes to Paris.

The show begins with Kim, who moves from London to Brighton with her family and develops one of those exhausting crushes on her best friend that only happen between the ages of 15 and 75. The first season deals with alcohol abuse, STDs, coming out, getting clean, and the the all-consuming power of teenage lust.

In other words, this ain't your mama's Saved By the Bell.

Don't get all sassy in the comments, now. I love Spencer and Ashley as much as the next person who had to grow up watching Kelly and Zack. Sugar Rush is just a little more, well, explicit.

Do you have any interest in watching or re-watching the critically-acclaimed teenage drama?

    This was so good!

I love Olivia Hallinan, she's great. I really enjoyed this, i'm going to have to buy the DVDs some time or buy the two series off iTunes that i've seen quite cheap. I loved it :)

Sugar Rush is on itunes? I looked and couldn't find it! Just wondering cause that would be great.

    iTunes store

Different iTunes stores have different things.  I noticed that Amy is from the UK, so the UK (or Great Britain store, not quite sure how iTunes does it) must have it, while the US store does not.

So excited! I loved Sugar Rush!

This show was funnier, more interesting, and more real than South of Nowhere ever was.

Season 1 is good, but Saint comes in Season 2, which makes it infinitely better!

Hopefully there will be more videos put up because of this. I still havent watched a few episodes of season 2 because i could never find them.

    Ishkabobby's picture

    I agree!

    Saint makes everything better!!

I found season 1 and 2 episodes online at surfthechannel.com. I dont think the video quality is the greatest but at least the episodes are there if you wanna give it a try.

    Hope it works for ya!

Suagr rush is amazing and I am so pleased they didn't try to re-make it into an american version. Season 2 is probably the better one out of the two but I would watch both again any time.

sugar rush is crazy! it's intense and hilarious and cringeworthy in the gosh-this-is-fantastically-painful-and-destructive-stuff kind of way (as opposed to the wow-theyre-hot-but-this-dialogue-is-horrendous kind of way). looking forward to this!

    Cancelled

I think it only had 2 seasons, at least I only own 2 seasons on dvd, if there was a third it slipped right past me! :P

The worst part of it being cancelled was that it wasn't because of bad ratings or anything else like that, it was cancelled so big brother could have a longer time slot. Channel 4 were idiots.

    L.O.V.E'd Sugar Rush

L.O.V.E'd Suagr Rush, helped me through those realisation stages of being gay, was too dang hot. Season 2 is much better than the first as there's a little more action. Pity there isn't a third season, with the ending of season 2 there could have been. A must see series, definately.

    SON on smack...

I've seen some episodes of "Sugar Rush" and was pleasantly surprised by how fun and out of control it was in comparison to SON (especially as SON tanked in its final season). I always say its like "South Of Nowhere" on smack.
    ClaireUK's picture

    Agreed!

Couldn’t agree with you more Karman, SON had all the groundwork of a good lesbian show, unfortunately they left out the "being lesbians" part! But as a Brit who ADORES Sugar Rush (and who concurs that the second season is the better of the two), i'm really really pleased the original show is going to be shown in the US!

Hold onto your hats guys.... SON it is not!

    Clara's picture

    oh awesome, you've seen it

oh awesome, you've seen it now? I'm sure in one of the histlist vlogs you said you hadn't.. perhaps it was Dara.  I hope as many people as possible see this 'cus its set in Brighton where I live, and that just makes me feel connected to the mainly US-ness of the site.and Karman I see what you mean now that i've seen a few south of nowhere episodes!

I wasn't like WOWed by Sugar Rush but perhaps thats 'cus it came easy. Like, I live in Brighton, this program was on TV, I remember quite a lot of people watching at least an episode. Yet when I discovered Willow and Tara and their song on youtube, or watched some early L Word episodes online it was like .. wow. a whole new thing.. and afterellen also, and I can't work out why since Kim's life is so much more like my own. (I was also a redhead in school in Brighton who liked girls. No Sugar though :P)

Perhaps just 'cus it didn't seem like a big thing, or a gay thing really, I don't know why! I saw it as a show I should watch 'cus my neighbour liked the book and it was set in Brighton, and my dad sometimes recorded it for me and at that time I know had I even known about the L Word and it been on TV I would have felt odd about asking him to record it. hmmm. i don't understand why it was like that for me!

actually I think I have figured it out. its cus to us is was just a new program set in our city whereas The L word is something you seek out online, DVD's, special channel or whatever which most people here haven't heard of. So it seemed more general, less scary or meanigful if you weren't out. hmms.

I missed the main part where they get together anyways, perhaps i should re-watch it!!

edit: just re-eatched episode 1 and perhaps i was too harsh before. i think it just wasn't reovlutionary to me because it was where I live, which in some ways is great but it didn't transport me away either. They don't cover anything up do they? I've watched a lot of US stuff recently and wow there is a big difference

from what i've seen of this show, its been good.

but one question: was Saint in season 1?

    bittybuffy's picture

    Saint

Saint was Season 2. And by far the best character. Well, except for maybe Kim's freaky brother and her nympho mum!

    Sugar Rush is addictive

Well-written (as opposed to the book the series are based on), brilliant acting, hilarious and sexy - and not afraid to be controversial. Shame it was cancelled after the third season.

    I'd say South Of Nowhere

I'd say South Of Nowhere was much more classy haha!

A lot of shows in Britain are more explicit like this... We seem to have less rules in terms of what we broadcast... Anyone else agree?

    Sugar Rush is from Channel

Sugar Rush is from Channel 4 (home of the first lesbian on-screen kiss in Brookside and Queer as Folk), and they're known for explicit material in shows. I think we just have a different attitude over here compared with America, as to what is deemed appropriate to show. It depends on the network and the sort of show, but also on what time it'll be shown. Although Channel 4 recently aired a sex education show before the watershed (9pm) and got into trouble for it. The network just seems a bit more willing to explore than some of the others.

    bittybuffy's picture

    4

I think Channel 4 runs on controversy. And I love it! I do miss Brookside and the Lindsay/Shelley/Jackie love triangle that was completely messed up. Shelley was hot.
Didn't they also have that autopsy show too, and I don't think anyone would watch "celebrity" big brother if it wasn't for the race row last time around.

    SUGAR RUSH IS AWESOME

In France, the series was diffused on the channel MCM. So, I had the luck to see it.

I liked both seasons. It's a mixture of humor, realism and feelings all this outstandingly well written.

Personally, I had a huge crush in the first season for an actress who played a second role...

    Sugar Rush to see absolutely!

I'm in the UK so I've had the dvd box set for almost two years now, but huzzah!!! It's an incredible series. :)

Unlike most posters here though, I prefer the first series... it just encapsulates the all consuming power and pain of obsession...  When it first aired, it certainly helped me in my quest to come out!

    Lenora Crichlow

I loved this when it aired in the UK.  It came along at exactly the right time.  I was going through a lot of what Kim's character did in the first series.  I thought that it balanced humor, sadness and honesty incredibly well.  It's a shame it didn't get a third series, I think there was more to be told.

As for the Sugar vs. Saint debate, my heart belongs to Sugar!  That might have something to do with the wonderful chemistry between Olivia Hallinan and Lenora Crichlow.

Speaking of Lenora, for readers in the UK, you can see her in the new drama series, Being Human, this Sunday at 9pm on BBC Three.  Check out the playlist of clips below for more.

    Sugar Rush is SWEET

The writing is witty and fresh...I think I've seen it enough times to quote it...Sugar on oral sex: "like kissing a fish with toilet paper stuck to it" and when she flips off the strippers at Saint's club and tells the cows to "swing on this"...hahahah good times...yeah you should totally watch it...

    FYI

Just wanted to give u guys a head up that YouTube has both of the seasons.  I read the blog last week about Sugar Rush and found all the episodes on YouTube...In fact, I watched them this past weekend.  Great show!  Saint, Saint, Saint!  So hot, Saint!  Season 2, definitely the best.

Curse you After Ellen! And thanks to ; )

My professor used to say it's hard to know what you want, because sometimes you don't even know that "there was one" for you to want....well thats how i feel with sugar rush....I didnt know it existed but I have to thank (and curse) after ellen for alerting me to the existence of this show....with one or two clicks i was going south of what?....this show is AMMMMMMAZING. i am staying up way to late, shirking every duty, and being completely irresponsible to watch every episode this evening....What a name like Sugar...goodness....puts spashley into some kind of category for school children and librarians (not the sexy librarians eithier) annnnywho...back to the almost done season 2.....opening up a new window to find the dvd's....thanks AE
