Stella gets a girlfriend on the Aussie cop drama "Rush"Thanks to AfterEllen.com reader Sophia we now know that the Aussie cop drama Rush has given its bisexual character, StellaDagostino (Nicole da Silva), a girlfriend. And I now know that that Rush is better than every police procedural in America.
Maybe it's the snappy Sorkin walk-n-talk meets crazy CSI artistry. Maybe it's the sexy cars and guns and accents. Or maybe it's the deliciously angry subtext between Stella and her gun-wielding boss, Kerry Vincent (Catherine McClements). For ignorant Yanks (like myself, up until a few hours ago), here's a rundown: Rush follows the lives of Melbourne's Tactical Response Team. They're smarter than you and they've got the technology to prove it. Stella is a part of the unit. Her bisexuality was hinted at in the first season, and although she's already shagged fellow officer MichaelSandrelli in this (second) season, she's got a girlfriend named Alana now. And here's how we meet her in episode nine:
I don't care about easy, but I'll tell you what I do want: I want this scene to go on for another ten minutes, because Stella and Alana are sizzling together. Seriously, there's more lesbian action in the first minute of this episode than there will be on all network TV in the U.S. all year. After making out for a while, Alana takes Stella to a sexy-car meet-up where some Fast and Furious action is about to go down. Unfortunately for Stella, some drug action is about to go down, too — and she's a cop.
If you haven't yet met Stella's boss, let me assure you, she would so be into that. To wit: When Stella and Alana get busted for racing cars, she goes to get Stella out of jail, and they have this little conversation.
Meow! Who's the big butch, then? And where's the Stella/Kerry fan fiction? That's what I want to know. Kerry tells Stella that she'd better find the guy behind the car races (and drug deals) by the end of the day, or she's off the team. After floundering around with Michael, chasing a lot of lame leads, Kerry takes matters into her own hands and drives them to the Big Crime Guy's posh apartment. Only guess who's waiting inside? Yep, it's Stella's girlfriend, Alana. Lucky(ish) for both of them, Kerry is only interested in finding the Big Crime Guy. She tells Stella if she wants to keep her job, she'd better get the information from her "friend."
They finally catch the Big Crime Guy in the end, but Kerry tells Stella she still hasn't decided if she can come back to work tomorrow, and, insult to injury, she makes her take the public bus to the station instead of riding back in the police car: "You've had enough free rides for today." Awesome, awesome, awesome. It seems to be a pretty common consensus that Stella's girlfriend is only around to provide an obstacle between her and Michael. Maybe so, but still, mad props to Channel 10 for treating Stella and Alana's relationship with the gravitas and normalcy of a heterosexual relationship. And for not shying away from the kissing. And, for a special treat, here are the Stella/Alana/Kerry scenes from episode nine. Normally, I'd just give you Stella and Alana, but you really need to meet Kerry, and watch her walk and talk. Delicious. Part 1: Part 2: Any of you Aussies watching Rush? Anyone besides me wish they could get it in their country? Submitted by on September 15, 2009 - 5:00pm. |

Yep
I've been watching Rush since it first started. Stella's sexuality was more than hinted at in the first season - she kissed her ex girlfriend when she was dropping Stella off at work, and her bio on the website always indicated she liked women and men. However apart from the main straight couple, hardly any of the characters private lives were developed in the first season. And i might also still be dirty AfterEllen didn't cover it when I emailed in the tip a year ago :P
As for Kerry and Stella, although I love Kerry's character, I don't think there's any subtext between them. Their interaction is actually pretty limited in most episodes.
I recommend any Aussie who isn't watching it to give it a go (it's the only show I actually ever watch!) some of the episodes are available online here - http://ten.com.au/rush.htm and I think you can also buy eps from itunes.
Rushing to Rush
Rush is a really good show! I've watched it since day one which is really odd as most Aussie cop shows (not to mention dramas, comedies, etc) are usually plain awful and unwatchable. Catherine McClements (Kerry) was the reason I first tuned in as in her most famous role to date she played a cop in another Aussie drama called 'Water Rats'. That was 'Action Catherine' and in Rush she's less action and more hot, dressed in boots & leather and full of angst towards the world. Not to mention her affinity to strapping guns to her thighs!
The Stella factor was just a very pleasant bonus surprise and the addition of Erica this season means a lot of girls with guns, combat boots and bullet proof vests. Love it!
ah.....
well I wondered where they were going with the bisexual storyline where it appeared near the beginning of the first season.
I was really disappointed when they had stella run off with Michael and didn't think we'd get anywhere with her. Good old Rush!!!!
And yes, Kerry = hotness
I sooo agree about
I sooo agree about everything about Catherine McClements/Kerry - I'd been feeling kinda guilty that my main interest in this show was her and not Stel! (There is plenty of fan-fic in my head, Stuntdouble!) I was also having a bit of the guilts about it as years ago CM was stalked by a woman and I seem to remember her saying some pretty unsavoury (ie bordering on homophobic) things back then, but, well, that was back then (back before the internet!!! - I actually just couldn't find ANY references to it in a quick search), and I imagine that getting stalked would make you say a few things you might not have thought through fully. So, Hooray for this news getting shared around, hooray someone else who thinks that Kerry is so, so awesome, and hooray to Channel 10 who have created a queer character with a personality that exists beyond jsut being 'the gay one', and that has not been used for promotion in any way.
I think it's a weird show though - it's so black and white with the 'bad guys' hardly ever getting to have any motivation beyond the fact that they're 'bad', and there being a bit of a message that all people under the age of thirty - unless they're cops - are likely to be out doing something illegal. But, OMG, Kerry and Stella... I'll forgive the show anything for that...
While I'm waffling among friends, did anyone else watch Secret Life, where Evan had a total crush on Catherine McClements' character? It adds a whole new subtext to their scenes in Rush ;)
Really?
Wow, I can't remember that at all! I used to watch Secret Life, but it was on so long ago now I've forgotten most of it. Actually the reason I started watching Rush in the first place was because of Sam Johnson - I knew his sister pretty well and met him a couple of times, so always keep an eye on what he's doing. I really like Leon and Kerry's dynamic, it's one of my favourite parts of the show!
I guess the main premise of Rush is that they're catching the bad guys - it's mostly action, not like a Law and Order style. They actually did have an episode this season with illegal drug smuggling, and they talked quite a bit about why the smugglers were forced into doing it, etc. I do see your point, I just think that the show's about a TR team, so they deal with the baddest baddies.
Catherine McClements
I'm not familiar with the stalker story but if it makes you feel any better she's at least played gay for pay, so maybe she's not too homophoboic. It was in a TV movie "Call Me Mum". I saw it at a special screening to mark Reconciliation Day last year so I don't know how easy it is to get ahold of.
Her love life doesn't get much attention in the movie but its definitely worth checking out. She's one of only a handful of actors who appear in the whole movie and she was great in it, its a bit of a gem.
As for Rush I'd never seen it before, looks like I'm going to have to start watching though!
Stalking
You're right about the stalking thing. During her time on Water Rats, McClements was stalked for a number of years by a security guard called Jodie Filetti, who, among other things, trashed McClements car and broke into her home. In 1999 a Sydney magistrate said that McClements was "subjected to the most horrific attention" from Filetti, who was sentenced to stay away from McClements for three years and have psychiatric counselling.
I remember that article your talking about in which McClements talked about the stalking. At the time I owned a gay and lesbian newspaper and so we were following the story. As I recall McClements wasn't commenting on lesbians so much as she was stating very, very emphatically that she herself was not a lesbian. I guess it wasn't surprising that she'd make such a statement, given the stalking and the fact that every lesbian I knew at the time had the hots for her AND her Water Rats character. LOL.
It's sure nice to have her back on our screens.

Stella is so hot!
I'm not into this show at
I'm not into this show at all but that's good news.
stella is amazing, i've been
wow
Looks like I'm going to have
Yes!! I was waiting for
Don't think there is a subtext between Kerry and Stella though.
The first time I ever saw
The first time I ever saw Rush was when I was flicking through the channels and happened upon Stella and Michael going at it like monkeys up against some wall in the change rooms. My mum was sitting next to me. I laughed uncomfortably and left the room huffing about how disgusting TV has become.
I think I might have to start watching Rush in my room from now on because as much as I am digging this new storyline for Stella, dirty TV sex is not something I want to be watching with my mum again any time soon.
We can't have a baby in the house! My sister's coming
Does she eat them?
dont watch it
Australian series
I have watched every aired episode of Rush. This might be because I'm a huge sucker for Australian police series.
I must say though, that Rush is a lot like Stingers. I don't know if anyone has watched Stingers before, but personally I fin it a lot better. Christina - one of the characters is also lesbian, and that storyline gets portrayed way better than Stella's in Rush.
So, for those who haven't seen either one. They're definitely worth checking out.
I like Rush - I kind of only
I like Rush - I kind of only watch it because Thursdays is a bit of slow night on Aussie free to air, but I still enjoy it.
Stella is hot but Kerry gives me the shits - she is the worst thing in this - the most unbelievable and the worst scripted. Everything she says is totally overblown and overdramatic. But that's just me - at least there's Stella to make up for it :D
nicole da silva taught me
Catherine McClements is hot!!
Catherine McClements (Kerry) and Nicole da Silva (Stella) are the best two things on Aussie TV atm!
CM has always had a bit of a cult lesbian following since her 'Water Rats' days and even though she looks pretty straight so far in Rush...I'm putting this down to confusion. Not that I want her to hook up with Stella.....anything female would be nice. I think the tension between Stella and Kerry is more because Kerry is this strong, powertrip boss type and Stella doesn't like bein' told!
Either way I like it........:)
am I the only one the first
am I the only one the first vid is not working for? the pic freezes after only a few secs while the audio continues.... :/

Ah Goldie!
This show is completely awesome (in a "guilty pleasure" kind of way) and while it loses its way on occasion, it's been very watchable since season 1, episode 1 (if only for the eye-candy). I too was completely stoked that Stella got some action this episode after the first season 'girlfriend breakup kiss' scene and the debacle that was the locker room frisk-turns-to-sex hook-up with Muppet Michael.
Stella's young and brash and a rule breaker and an all 'round great, if peripheral, character to root for. You go Stell!
I too, though, am mostly in it for the glorious Catherine McClements. She's been a dykon around these parts since her original incarnation as the butch, bustling, no-nonsense cop Rachel "Goldie" Goldstein in Water Rats. She sported a dykey-short haircut back then (eg, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FGRunaNM2vE) and she's hot, looks like a cop, can act and steals just about every scene she's in. But then I'd happily watch her read the phone book.
Loved this exchange with Lawson back at the station house:
Lawson: But she's still a talent
Kerry: Oh yeah, so am I
And then slightly later...
Lawson: Let's confer, okay?
Kerry: No way! She's MINE! I've just got to get out of this suit.
L-O-L! *Woot*
The way she handled the Stella situation was both firm-handed and fair. She gave Stella the opportunity to right her wrongs but didn't give her an easy time of it. Only way to learn, really.
Well done, Rush! And well done Channel Ten for your non-salacious handling of the promos and advertising. And thanks AfterEllen for recognising non-US cop drama. I still find the immense difference between our network censorship regulators highly amusing. Here we can swear and cuss and pash on and on with our girlfriends 'til the cows come home. This aired at 8.30 pm! On free-to-air TV! Thank Lard for Oz.
YES.
One of my most favourite shows :D
It's just freaking awesome. I can't even put it into words.
although im aussie ive never
but just wanted to say i LOVEEE catherine mcclements lol. i had the BIGGEST crush on her when i was really young watching Water Rats on tv hehehe
Catherine McClements
I'm so dissapointed with
yeah same
Booooooooo!
What a disappointment. That felt soooooo arbitrary... just to get Michael and Stella together.
I knew things were going to end badly when the episode opened with Stella and Alana so clearly happy together. And when a show gets that predictable, I'm done with it.
