Welcome to AfterEllen.com!

Heather Hogan

So you want to watch a holiday movie?

You have two choices this weekend: Go out and fight the holiday crowds, or stay in and watch holiday movies. (Yep, that's it. Those are the only two choices.) To help you choose what to watch if you decide to stay in, we've constructed a holiday movie flow chart.

According to the chart, what will you be watching this weekend? What's your favorite holiday film?

A Christmas Story.

Love Actually and Home Alone are two of the best Christmas movies but you can't forget A Christmas Story.

I like to smile, smiling's my favorite!

Elf and Love Actually take the cake for me depending on what sort of mood I'm in. But I could watch Love Actually every day and never get tired of it. I also associate any Harry Potter movie with Christmas, so I'm sure those will be in heavy rotation.

Ahahaaha ELF!! <3 I'm

Ahahaaha ELF!! <3 I'm surprised I haven't watched it this year yet! Last year, I watched Elf almost every day during December. I'm going to pop it in the DVD player right now, I think. <3 I absolutely ADORE Zooey Deschanel!!

But, oh man... Home Alone. I remember Home Alone 2 was on different TV channels practically EVERY day last year! And I watched it every time, lol! Definitely one of my all-time favorites.

I've actually never watched any of the others... (except The Nightmare Before Christmas, of course.) I have a feeling I'll be renting Love Actually from Blockbuster next week. :)

Everybody's fine.

My bff and I decided to go see "Everybody's Fine," because we'd heard that it was a good Christmas movie - or assumed that it would be. And oh god we were wrong.

Let me just say that this is akin to characterizing "Titanic" as a "good Christmas movie," if by good Christmas movie one intends to indicate a sobfest of epic proportions. Although, to be fair, there was a nice holiday present in the form of Katherine Moennig - thanks, Miramax.

Love Actually!

I've already seen it once and DVR'd it for my whole family to watch. And my best friend at college hasn't seen How the Grinch Stole Christmas (to be fair, she's Jewish), so that's on the list.

As a child of the 90's, I miss the old Christmas specials they used to show on Cartoon Network. Yogi Bear and the Flintstone's Christmas Carol anyone?

Mali's picture

Moooovies

I always ALWAYS loved the cheesey short stop christmas animation films! I don't have no idea what any of them are called but I do know they all revolve around the theme of christmas (obviously) Otherwise I loooove A Christmas Story, if I could play any character in that movie I would totally be the kid in the line to see Santa that says "I like Santa" That and you can't forget The Polar Express!

The Holiday

Okay flowchart, I'll watch The Holiday!

I've never seen it before, anyone know if it's any good?

McGirl-ver's picture

Holiday is a good movie

It follows the lives of two women, one in england, one in the US, both of whom have terrible love lives. For the winter vacation they swap houses (who does this? I don't know) and spend their time dealing with people of the town and growing as women. I can't recall the actors off the top of my head but I think it was jack black's best acting performance. I can't wait to watch it again.
mandaisyrenergy's picture

The Holiday is a fantastic

The Holiday is a fantastic movie!

Cameron Diaz kinda ruins it though. But Jack Black and Kate Winslet are worth it!

Ana's picture

Love Actually and Holiday..

both..but it's still too early for holiday movies..:)

Christmas Eve On Sesamese Street

and The Bear Who Slept Through Christmas are childhood favorites of mine (the former really badly dubbed in German, but I suppose as a kid you don't necessarily notice that the lip movements don't fit). same goes for Scrooged and Disney's version of A Christmas Carol. Still watch them every year.

I also agree with the Love Actually love. Great movie, great actors - makes me feel good. As does It's Wonderful Life.

dragonlady07's picture

OH MY GOD

the bear who slept through christmas! I WATCHED THIS OVER AND OVER AS A CHILD

and also disneys christmas carol!!! <3

Ha!

How many British Actors do you prefer in your Christmas Love stories? -> All of them! -> Love Actually

It's funny 'cause it's true!

I'm not hugely into Christmas movies, but I can be persuaded to watch Santa Claus the Movie.

Jess's picture

TNBC!

It is all about The Nightmare Before Christmas!!!! That movie rules plus it gives me a chance to sing along! XD
bleu_lightning's picture

Love Actually of course...

Just saw it for the...fifth time last week. So good - could watch it forever.

And any movie with Zooey Deschanel singing in a shower & a full-grown "Elf" always makes for a great holiday film.

A Christmas story

I found my own childhood when I first saw the movie. It's charming and funny, and tender without being sissy.

The little boy is exactly it. Very real.

Secondsex's picture

Le pere Noel est une ordure

Also, Santa Claus is trash is a French classic, completely offbeat... I think it was made into a very bad movie by Nora Ephron starring Steve Martin. But the French original is just genius: Thierry l'hermite, Josiane Balasko, Anémone, Gerard Jugnot, Michel Blanc. The great wave of French comedy in the 1980s.

It was fun, sexy and had a little profanity. The tenderness was twisted!

"The sh*tter's full."

Christmas Vacation all the way.  Family tradition dictates the movie will be watched during Christmas; and it's one rule I really don't mind following!  Plus, my dad's usually a quiet guy.  He'll chuckle or laugh quietly, but with C.V. he is always laughing loudly.  Good times.

Another movie that is tradition is White Christmas.  The chart totally ignores one of the best Christmas movies ever made!

I just watched it last week!

I'll have to try The Holiday...

because that looks like Kate Winslett in the flow chart. And there's lots of rave reviews for Love, Actually, so I guess I'd better try that, too. I always watch It's a Wonderful Life.

My Holiday List...

Yay! Flow Charts!!!

I got either Nightmare Before Christmas or Holiday (as I'm not bothered about animated or non animated), both of which I have on DVD, so I may have to have a late night tonight and watch Holiday, then Nightmare Before Christmas tomorrow morning, waking my parents up with my horrendous singing haha!!!

I love your flow charts! They are fantastic!!! They make my inner geek rejoice :)
