Rachel Maddow is crush-worthy on all accountsWhen Newsweek's Dec. 1 issue hits stands, it's going to have a little piece of non-news in the Rachel Maddow profile: "Her fans find her adorable, often confessing to crushes on her."
Newsweek is the latest print publication to devote multiple pages to Maddow, and while some of the information has been around for a while (lesbian, doubled MSNBC's ratings, keeps comic books by her bed), there's a personal element to the story that is fresh and, frankly, really sweet. For example, here’s Maddow on her partner, Susan Mikula: "... If it made sense for my relationship with Susan that I needed to stop being on TV, and stop being on the radio, and go live full time in the Upper Peninsula in Michigan and raise chickens, we'd go live in the Upper Peninsula and raise chickens. It's the single clearest thing in my life." On why she won't get married: "We both have a real fondness for the outsider part of our gay culture." On falling in love the moment she and Mikula met: "It was irrational and spiritual and unexpected, and there was a moment where it was like time stopped and it was just like, OK, my whole life is different now." Maddow also appeared on Conan on Friday night. In one of her most amusing interviews ever, she talks about growing up playing "Iran" with her brother, a game in which she lined up the neighborhood kids according to height and acted out the Iraq-Iran war. She also tells Conan that a lot of straight men send her fan mail asking if being in love with her makes them lesbians. Watch the entire interview below. (Rachel Maddow appears at 28:06.) One of the best part of the Newsweek article on Maddow was a quip from Mikula. She wonders why people always label Maddow is such an "unlikely" success story. "She goes from Stanford to Oxford to activism to radio, then TV? What's so unusual about that? Is it because she is a gay lady?" Unlikely or not, Newsweek's right: the world has got a crush on Rachel Maddow, which kind of makes me think we're sorting out our priorities. Submitted by on November 24, 2008 - 3:00pm. |

She has a great sense of humor and witt. Even more crush worthy. Thanks for the clips. Keep them coming. A lesbian could never get too much Maddow in her daily life.

New Fan
I have come to view Rachel as that role-model of sorts....the big brother I never had. I have been a tomboy all my life, but of the short variety....barely 5'2". I have always envied the ease in which men strolled through this life...tall, easy to dress, women falling over them.
Now...HERE's Rachel....able to do all of the above, and without the penis! She is incredibly intelligent, good-looking and a master of sarcasm when required. The top of the list quality is her fierce loyalty to her partner/lover...aces. I love this woman!
Maddow tipster
I'm not the only one sending in the Maddow tips am I? I have "rachel maddow" query on my google account news page. LOL
Yay for Hulu! I was waiting for an itunes podcast...Conan doesn't podcast everything though.
There's another article here: Rachel Maddow is the future of MSNBC
Which I find funny because "Much has been made in the media about her lesbianism"...LOL like being gay is an ideology.
YouTube URL
aaahhhh Rachel...
she's (almost) making up for all the lesbian disappearing on TV (or the lack of lesbian on TV...). I'm on the old continent, but enjoy big time watching or hearing her daily.
An out lesbian daily on tv, funny, witty and popular! What a blessing! Intelligence is so sexy ;-) plus she seems like a dork, i dig that big time.
Everything with passion, nothing with talent...
"An out lesbian daily on
"An out lesbian daily on tv, funny, witty and popular! What a blessing!"
Haha we forget about Ellen so soon?
Whoopsy, my bad ;-)
I can actually follow daily her on podcast even outside the us, i don't get the chance to see ellen that often. But she has paved the way for sure.
Backlash?
The mention in the Newsweek piece about her losing her sense of smell when she deals with bouts of depression was awing. She's incredible.
There's a post up at Gawker today that asks when the Maddow love parade will end. Here's some of that post:
You got the sense last week that some of the backlash is starting to come and I'm a little surprised that that discussion didn't make it into this post.
Maddow drew a little bit of fire from her base last week when she failed to ask Gov. Mike Huckabee about some of his recent jaw dropping anti-gay, anti-reality public statements during an interview on her show. Today, Pam Spaulding (LGBT blogger extraordinare) takes Maddow to task over that interview and her subsequent response to the criticism. Any thoughts about that bit of controversy?

"Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly." - MLK
Huckabee schmuckabee
I read the article whenever it was first posted. I didn't think much of it... going after Huckabee for the obvious would just be like...venting. I mean it wouldn't do anything. We all know what he thinks. There is no winning an argument with people like Huckabee. Perhaps he was even expecting Rachel to go after him on gay issues so he could speak on it.
There are people in this country that just aren't pro-gay. But the thing about religious conservatives is that they're usually all around wacky. So, if you can show people who aren't pro-gay, but maybe not really anti-gay, that there are all these other absurd things about Huckabee...maybe then they'll reject his other views that don't get talked about as much.
Don't get me wrong, I would thoroughly enjoy seeing Rachel smackdown Huckabee. But I really think the LGBT community needs to stop pinning their hopes on whatever queer is currently popular.
Naturally
I love how Rachel Maddow so naturally and easily talks about her sexuality when asked and how she ridicules homophobic criticism. Living life queer wouldn't be the same without her as the invaluable role model that she is.
As for her failure to ask head-in-the-ground Republicans about their anti-gay beliefs, I really don't think it means she's unwilling to address and stand up for gay rights. I agree with her that asking them other questions is more interesting and necessary. If you listen to her radio show, where she has more time to address the important issues she wants to address, she has devoted entire hours to gay marriage and other gay issues. Mainstream television allows her less time, and therefore she must balance a wide variety of newsworthy political issues within a small timeframe. I also think that her being out and proud on television sends a stronger message to her viewers than any comment she can deliver.
I haven't had a celesbian
I haven't had a celesbian crush since the first time I saw Melissa Etheridge when I was 13. The day I found Rachel Maddow was about 3 times more intense. The woman is intelligent, beautiful, hilarious, real, hot, and gay. What more could any girl want in her woman? I love to see her out in the mainsream media. It's great to have her as one of the faces of our culture.
p.s.-if you haven't seen this video yet, I would suggest it...it'll make you fall in love with her intelligence all over again.

double excitement!
rachel maddow AND vampire weekend on conan, yay!
I usually don't actually watch her show but I do listen to the daily podcast of it at work and I've started listening to the air america show on my drive home.. It's nice to have someone to listen to who's smart and witty and not so in your face like some other commentators.
(oops)
oh, Rachel Maddow.
One thing I really love about her - apart from her being brilliantly smart, sharp, witty, intelligent, calm, reassuring and polite - is how completely casual she is about being who she is. She's been casually slipping in references to Susan during her Air America days ("my beloved and I went to breakfast") and about her in-laws. Perhaps it's her California/Mass. upbringing and her job in New York, but she's just so relaxed about it that it always makes me grin stupidly whenever she talks so off-handedly about it, like she assumes that all her listeners are so accepting that being gay isn't even an issue.
Also, she wore that outfit on her Friday MSNBC show - was that the first time she didn't wear her blazer/girly blouse outfit? I'm so glad she gets to wear a collared SHIRT as the host; that totally looks like how I dress when I go to work. I know it's a little shallow, but she's looking more and more like she gets to pick the clothes she really feels comfortable in. I get to see more of me represented on television. Say no to the collarless low-cut blouses, Rachel, and stick to those collared shirts!
Rachel...Rachel
You can find the complete article on www.huffingtonpost.com under the "Media" tag.
I think she'll be around for the long term; she was in the right place at the right time, and the timing was totally perfect. Intellect in TV political coverage and news is a rare find. There will always be some to "fall away" as it were, but fans being who they are are tremendously loyal...and I wouldn't expect that to change.
THE RACHEL CRAZE. NOT THE ONE FROM "FRIENDS"
You are part of the Rachel Craze if:
Because of her you find punditry very sexy and a bit more enjoyable.
You promote her in your Facebook "status".
You blog about her.
You find her attractive.
You think her glasses should be the equivalent of Jen Aniston's "Rachel hairstyle".
You get excited when there is an article about her.
or if...
butch women aren't generally your type, but you find yourself putting her at the top of your "celebrities I can sleep with if I'm in a relationship" list. :)
I am so part of the Rachel craze
I get gitty when there's an article about her, I usually mention waiting for her show to come on on my Facebook, and I definately find her attractive.
"Happiness is only real when shared."-unknown
Relatability
I more relate to her than find her attractive. It's nice that the dork look is now in. LOL Now I won't get nagged for dressing poorly. Yeah...so my sneakers don't match what I'm wearing...neither do Rachel's and she's on TV.
It took me 15 years to convince my Mom that nerd glasses suit me (and the pressure from nosepads on wire or frameless glasses give me a headache). It took Rachel a few minutes on Leno, Colbert and Conan to convince her that they suit Rachel. LOL
So when I first heard of her
The thing I LOVE about Rachel Maddow is...
It must be a required course in Communications to "report" the news with a nondescript, non-emotional, just the facts ma'm, Jack Friday, STONED FACE look... that Rachel is such a breath of FRESH AIR! She smiles, she emotes, is witty with her zingers, she challenges and is quick on the uptake. In her interviews, she's down to earth and personable. My admiration and respect for her quadrupled on the night of the Election, at the close of the polling nationwide, and Obama was declared the projected winner, Rachel had tears in her eyes...reminiscent of Walter Cronkite as he reported the death of a president, Kennedy. It was so refreshing and honest. It was indeed a historical moment when it was clear that we as a country, are actually going forward, in our collective choice for a new president to represent and lead our nation.
It is also endearing that a confident 'butch' gal would "glam up" femme fopr her job that she clearly loves. I must admit of being a bit envious of her partner being so blessed to have Rachel as her partner. It is very inspiring to know that it is possible to fall in love at first sight, and touching to hear of the obvious love and affection shared by these lovely ladies.
Kudos Rachel...so glad to have "met ya!" I wish you many years of success in your career.
Pam Spaulding's denunciation of Rachel Maddow
I'm what's called a "red diaper baby." My parents were members of the Communist Party of the USA in the 40s and early 50s. So, I grew up familar with the concept of the party line: the approved take on every issue that CPers were supposed to follow.
Pam Spaulding's blog is like that. If someone doesn't devote 100% of their time and energy to LGBT issues, that person is a sell-out. Send them to Siberia! To me, that's pathetic. Just because she's a dyke, that doesn't mean Rachel Maddow has to spend any of her MSNBC show on LGBT issues. She covers what she finds interesting. That's fine with me!
Susan!
me too
i thought it was just me being weird - getting such a kick out of her mentioning susan and susan's family like any straight person would mention their spouse. heartwarming.
not only the susan mention...
