"Melrose Place" previews their bisexual publicist's interest in women

The CW has just released several short promos for their Melrose Place fall reboot, and we're delighted to report that maybe there will be girls kissing on TV after The L Word, after all!

(Thanks to user FlorenceMachine for the tip!)

But first, some introductions: This is Kate Cassidy.

You might remember her from her short stint on Supernatural, or maybe you just know her as David Cassidy's daughter. Either way (or neither way), Cassidy plays bisexual Ella in the upcoming Melrose remake, and everything you need to know about Ella is spelled out for you in the new promo.

This is Ella. Ella likes to make it rain. (Or, you know, maybe she's just buying a pack of gum. I don't know. I'm just guessing based on the dollar bill and the smug look on her face.)

Ella is a publicist.

(Is there an echo in here?)

She has an eye for talent.

Ella is looking for love.

(Seriously, it's like you're mocking me.)

Will Ella find love? Who's that blurry dude back there? Will he be the one?

Hey yo! It's a woman! Hmm, is Ella into chicks?

Guess so!

Check out the full promo below.

Melrose Place premieres on September 8. Are you interested yet?

UPDATE: During the CW panel at the Television Critics Association today, a reporter asked about Ella being bisexual. Katie Cassidy responded, "My character is definitely exploring her sexuality" and executive producer Todd Slavkin added, "she is try-sexual — she will try anything" to huge laughs from the audience.

Might Check It Out

The use of 'looking for love' makes me think this is maybe more than the usual 'look two girls kissing *increase in ratings* right now enter male love interest so nobody gets uncomfortable' Bones ploy.

So maybe ill give it a chance.

I'm iffy on Melrose

I'm iffy on Melrose returing.. but if this Bi-character turns out to a half decent one then it might lessen my skepticism of why they've chosen to make her Bi in the first place as opposed to jst straight or instead lesbian.

It kinda sad that I'm suspicious of why she's Bi and not just happy that she's one more represention on television. So I do hope that the *looking for love* thing will have some intent behind it like you're hoping too.

But she's not bi.

She's not bi; the actress said so. She's just "sexually exploring"--like just about every other supposedly bi character on TV I can remember.

I wonder a little bit why this site labels characters like this bi, when the people attached to the show go to such effort to avoid giving the character that label. There are plenty of people who don't label themselves who are part of the community. Granted they are usually labeled bisexual by others, so I can see where you're coming from.

But calling characters like this bi collapses the people who chose not to label (or really do consider themselves straight) with those, like me, who do think it's important to name queer identity and claim the word bisexual. It also unintentionally reinforces the old myth that there aren't really bi women--that we are all straight "experimenters" or heteroflexible or some such garbage. It also artifcially inflates the number of "bi" women on television.

I would love to see a character I believed was bisexual on screen, even if the plot had her involved with a man part of the time--she could be doing LGBT political activism work, for instance. But I agree that the show looks like the same old exploitative Bones shtick. I won't be watching.

And does anyone actually make that old "try-sexual" joke? Please. That one was old in the 90s. Doesn't exactly inspire me to look to Melrose for great writing.

Sexual Fluidity

I do agree that at times we are quick to label bisexual when someone is seen both with men and women but often the screen writting is so poor/afraid to upset viewers that there is no real exploration of sexuality. Id love someone just to hold there hands up and say 'my character is sexually fluid' however I think there is a lack of understanding of sexual fluidity so its easier for them just to say bisexual, the world unfortunately likes to confine things to boxes with nice labels to identifty whose who.

My fault

My fault, I somehow ignored some info.

I read the heading, the writing in between and saw the promo video. I completely missed out reading the last paragraph where, if I had done so, would have read the try-sexual description as well the actress quoting the 'exploration' part.

Now I'm not so hopeful about the whole ''finding love aspect''. As while there would be obviously absolutely nothing wrong with her character finding love with a man if that did end up to be the case it would still however be, well, what we'd have seen plenty of times before already on tv.

I have no problem with people who are try-sexual, becuz some Bi people need to go through that period in which to finally ''know'' who they are and what not. But just for once I would like to see someone who is as certain about themsleves (Bi-wise) as other gay and straight characters on tv are allowed to be. Just once!

Yes!

I agree with your assessment...

Dunno

Looks like the same old expolitive tosh as usual and considering its a Melrose Place remake I would expect nothing less. You all rember Gay Matt on the original series. I don't care about gay characters on a shows like this, the bitchyness is what is important.

Will I watch?

Yes.  Out of desperation, if nothing else.

I'm sure the show will be

I'm sure the show will be shockenly great in it first 3 episodes just like all of The CW shows One Tree Hill, Gossip Girl, 90210, etc, etc...then after the first 3 episodes it'll get a rated for everyone makeover and turn crap.

Kinda...

...but not really. I'm not sure what to expect when I read the words "looking for love" I might try it out just to see where it goes, but I'm not holding my breath that it will be anything expectacular.

I fell in love with that

I fell in love with that actress when she was playing Ruby in Supernatural so I'll be watching for sure.

I might

I might watch. But to me it feels like a cheap publicity stunt. Hopefully I am wrong.

Hell yeah :)

I am so in.

Um YES!

Sooo tuning in for that, I doubt it will last though :(

Fail!

Ha that promo made no effin sense! The only interest I had in this show was of course the bi-sexual storyline, which is apparently NOT really going to happen. "try-sexual" basically just means "experimenting" right so its the same old bullish and I don't need to see anymore of that crap.

Hmm...

Steamy hot tub and girl kisses? Did I fall into an episode of The Real World and no one told me?

This does not look too promising as far as something solid is concerned. I fear that Ella's sexuality may be a one-off for ratings... Or she'll be the Bizarro!Alice of Melrose Place.

I really don't want to watch

I really don't want to watch it because it looks like its going to be The Hills & Gossip Girl on crack with more collagen....but maybe I'll be persuaded. So far not really impressed.

Besides Ashley Simpson-Whats her name is in this show. How good can it be?

I love how she's suposed to

I love how she's suposed to be bisexual and yet she seems to show no interest whats so ever in the boys. That's a first for network TV.

Well, lets see whats on...

Hmmm...

TLW is dead and gone, Thirteen isn't back for another month, Emily and Naomi aren't for another year, I have no idea whats happening with Callie and Arizona, and Pepa and Silvia, well... just don't talk about that please. So... looks like Im stuck with Melrose Place... although I did see the previews on TV and was like... *mild interest*.

Ill give it a look, but as many have said, this is probably going to be more of a ratings boost than a serious aspect of the show.

Censored kiss

It annoys me that they always cut a split second before any girl-on-girl kissing promo. I've seen that all before: Cashmere Mafia, The O.C, Nip/Tuck... It is as if it such a taboo to see two girls kiss.

I doubt we'll see Ella in a committed relationship with any woman. She will always be with guys and hook up with girls once in a while for fun. Oh well, since my standard is so low, I will probably watch a bit of it without any hope or expectation.

Try-sexual

It's so annoying how they are always coming up with a new stupid label to avoid "bissexual" or "lesbian".
oscartg's picture

Bah

I only thing those show are "trying" is my patience. I will not be watching. I'm far too traumatised by watching crap portryals on straight shows so I won't be watching. Wake me up when Illene emerges from her crypt.
