News, Reviews & Commentary on Lesbian and Bisexual women in Entertainment and the Media

Lesbians get some love from "Entertainment Weekly"

Let's face it: not many of our favorite lesbian actors, musicians, comics and characters enjoy the kind of mainstream affection they do with AfterEllen.com readers. In fact, if your gaydar is in the shop, one quick queer test is to drop a name like Tegan and Sara. Or maybe mention Piper Perabo. If someone knows her as Rachel from Imagine Me & You, and not "that girl from Coyote Ugly," you've probably met yourself a genuine lez.

Back in 2008, we noticed a trend: lesbian and bisexual characters were disappearing onscreen, but lesbian and bisexual actors were gaining plenty of notoriety. We were proved right — once again — when Entertainment Weekly released its "2009 Best & Worst" issue, which gave plenty of mainstream love to some of our favorite gays.

Two queer ladies snagged Entertainer of the Year titles. Lady Gaga came it at number three, while Jane Lynch took spot number 12.

Amazingly, the biggest points [Lady Gaga] has made so far is that her songs — from the p-p-persistence of "Poker Face" to the Grand Guignol choruses of "Bad Romance" — are some of the purest pleasures ever aurally dispensed. And while it's impossible to to imagine he her keeping up his pace for another year (let alone a whole career), she reassures us she's not striving for reinvention on a daily basis. "I really am all the things that you see. So it will be one continuous thought until I'm laying in a coffin, surrounded by all of my props."

Glee's Sue Sylvester would tell Jane Lynch to suck it up and not be so grateful for her scene-stealing role in the Fox hit. But the 49-year-old actress doesn't have Sue's stone-cold demeanor (or her colors-of-the-rainbow tracksuit collection). "It's been a slow reckoning that this is pretty awesome," says Lynch of her growing fame. "But it also means you can't make a foll of yourself in public. No more streaking. Basically now I have to behave myself."

(And just to add a little "G" perspective to the "LGBT", Adam Lambert pulled the eighth spot for Entertainer of the Year, and ABC's super gay Modern Family was number nine.)

In more specific categories, Gossip scored the sixth best song of the year with "Heavy Cross."

There's one more lesbian highlight in EW's Best and Worst, but I'm reluctant to give it to you. [Deep breath] In "The Shaw Report," Jessica Shaw examines what's in, what's five minutes ago, and what's absolutely out. The last item on her list this year just might break your heart:

Oh, Shane. You'll always be in with us.

Who were your favorite out performers this year?

Laura L's picture

Different kind of out?

Perhaps she was thinking of a different kind of out? Say what you will, but Shane was very much out ;-)

I'm sorry but I have to

I'm sorry but I have to agree. Shane is very out. Completely last season, Tired and played out.

The Year of the Lynch

Jane Lynch is simply brilliant and I'm so thrilled that she's getting the recognition she deserves! From being a part of Christopher Guest's comedy troupe to her Xbox commercials, she is comedy genius!

Vote for Jane Lynch on Shewired's Woman of the year!

I'm not a fan of Shewired but I am a fan of Jane's, so go vote for her now! Cathy and Jill (2 for 1 special?) are currently leading by 53% to Jane's 4%.

Just say no...

Love Jane Lynch, but just say no to Shewired.  "Jill" is a Zionist, and that website continues to promote her hate.  Stick with AE and you'll be fine.

sexymama's picture

nothing wrong with that

YOu say Zionist like it's a bad thing. I'm a Zionist too and proud of it! Rock on Israel and peace to all.

Jane Lynch is pure awesome,

Jane Lynch is pure awesome, as is Lady Gaga. And I agree, Shane is always in, of course.

LMAO!

Sorry, but I have this friend..she pings on everyone's gaydar, has a full gay scorecard(insert cliche, and check) and is getting married to a guy next year.

And she is an absolute Piper Perabo fan!(And only Piper Perabo...)

Your example just cracked me up, cause you should have seen my face, when she dragged me to a Perabo afternoon feature.

"Piper Perabo,really?"

Lol, so true..

Gay-Ga?

Lady Gaga isn't really a lesbian though =/
Doc McG's picture

Agreed

Yeah, I thought she is supposedly bisexual, not lesbian.
GrrrlRomeo's picture

She Is

Yes, Lady Gaga is bisexual. But with girls she only fucks, men she loves. Which, regardless of if you're a male or female, bisexual or gay, claiming you pretty much just use women for sex is a FAIL in my book.

Also: Lady Gaga: "I'm not a feminist. I hail men, I love men."

uh, yeah. okay. Congrats on being like any other misogynistic rock star.

i dont think

she only sleeps with women, she said in the interview shes never fallin inlove with a women, so idk if that means she never will or jus never has, even if she was straight id still love her, shes hot lol
GrrrlRomeo's picture

She's done more than one interview

She's done more than one interview where's she says this.

And yes, I'm aware that kids don't care and are going to like her regardless. That's the nature of mainstream pop music. It's not really for your brain. Sex sells and all that. I just don't get the total group think lesbians, gays and bisexuals have on Lady Gaga.

I disagree

And shouldn't you be on the "Visions of Lovely glasses-wearing women" article ( http://www.afterellen.com/blog/thelinster/visions-of-loveliness-our-favo... )? :p

Anyhoo, I think the "group think" so-to-speak exists because she is a very outspoken LGBT rights supporter. I don't think there's any need to hate on our community's supporters, especially compared to, say, some New York Democrats who take money from gay people and groups and then vote against marriage for them. Having someone like her speak up for us is a big deal. Visibility! Also, it's not bad to like something popular. Being popular doesn't make a person objectively "bad."

That whole quote was actually:

"I'm not a feminist - I, I hail men, I love men. I celebrate American male culture, and beer, and bars and muscle cars..."

I think she's just saying that because men in general need emotional coddling; feminism freaks them out because, according to that philosophy, they are (gasp) not the center of the universe. And they can't handle that. Silly guys. Though the idea that beer, bars, and muscle car are solely the domains of men is wrong. But, hey, celebrities are not perfect. Nobody is.

I also don't think it's misogynistic of her to maybe enjoy casual sex, so long as she isn't stringing women along or something. There's this stigma that there's something "wrong" with women who enjoy sex, that they're sluts or something. There's nothing wrong with it. She is hardly "like any other misogynistic rock star."

All that said, the title of the article is technically inaccurate and doesn't reflect its content. Perhaps it ought to have been "Queer women get some love from EW" or maybe "Lesbians and bi women get some love from EW" or whatever.

Edit: I think the responses below me have good points also!

Crumbs always the crumbs

On the contrary, we soooo don't need anyone to speak for us. We need to be able to speak for ourselves. Giving that ability to celebrities is giving up power.

Perez Hilton isn't exactly the best representative of the gay community. He's a jerk. And Tila Tequila isn't playing with a full deck. We need not worship every celebrity that gives us the time of day. Nor do we need to like or support every queer person in the media.

It just seems to me that there's a double standard here. If a man said he likes fucking girls but not commitment he'd be called a misogynist. But here's a girl who says, I think pretty clearly, that she can separate love and sex and is apparently aware that she doesn't emotionally connect with women.

It's not all about how we view her for liking sex. There's nothing wrong with liking sex. But I do think LGB women are being willfully ignorant about how Lady Gaga views and treats women because she's giving us a little attention.

We're so easy, it's sad. "Oh yay, Lady Gaga is open enough that she'd fuck us." And so would Fergie of BEP and Amanda Palmer of Dresden Dolls. And people are surprised that lesbians are wary of dating bisexuals?

I like plenty of popular things. I just don't care for Lady Gaga. Her music is mediocre--even for pop it's mediocre. Her perfomance, while visually strange, doesn't say much. Every pop musician knows if they want to live forever, they just have to gain gay icon status and we'll carry them into their 70s.

There have been numerous gay icons that adore gay men--and only gay men. That's what she seems like to me.

Not just "crumbs"

Lady Gaga was at the National Equality March in October. She gave a speech, put on a show. I don't really see that as crumbs. She puts her money where her mouth is. She uses her popularity for supporting LGBT rights. How are we giving up power by supporting her? I realize you don't like her, but she's on our side. I don't see any reason to hate on her, personally. And comparing her to people like Perez Hilton and Tila Tequila is silly; they're not out marching and giving speeches in support of us.

"And people are surprised that lesbians are wary of dating bisexuals?"

Yeah, but we are not dating her. We are actually more just judging her, you for her personal life and music, and me for her public stances and actions. Like I said, she is not perfect. I certainly would not sleep with her and/or date her (I guess I'm one of those "wary about bisexuals" lesbians). But, I am willing laud her for standing up for people like us. :)

I get a Margaret Cho vibe off of Lady Gaga

To me, people who have long-term relationships with men and cheap sex with women are the equivalent of people who cut steak with a spoon and eat soup with a knife.

I get a Margaret Cho vibe off of her. She seems to be more of a (pardon the expression) fag hag who supports LGBT rights and talks about hooking up with women, but seems more into gay men than gay women.

Although Reverend Fred Phelps is protesting her show so she must be doing something right. -)

Alliesaurus's picture

Ha!

Interesting simile there. I like Lady Gaga's music to some extent, and I appreciate her stances and activism, though I do not obsessively follow as some friends seem to (not that there is anything wrong with that, of course). I just see no reason to hate on her for enjoying casual sex.

As for Fred Phelps, he is a clown. He protests everything for the sake of protesting it. But your point stands. :)

In those interviews, does she say...

...that she has never loved a woman or that she will never love a woman? It seems to me there's a important distinction there, especially when the lady is only twenty-three. To be honest, I'm twenty-four and I still have never been in love with a woman (or anyone else), and yet I'm quite emphatically sure I'm gay.
honkey_tonk's picture

I actually saw the interview

I actually saw the interview where she says she's never been in love with a woman, even though she's slept with women, she never says she wouldn't date a woman. She doesn't seem misogynistic to me though. I think she puts gay issues on the table, and even if she is bisexual, she is rather gay-friendly. She speaks openly about equal rights for the LGBT community and she's an outspoken successful entertainer. Plus I love her music, she does a weird mixture of pop and eighties rock tunes, I dont care if shes bisexual or whatever, she's great, I love her.

Lady Gaga and feminism

She later said she is a feminist.

"I'm getting the sense that you're a little bit of a feminist, like I am, which is good," she tells a reporter. "I find that men get away with saying a lot in this business, and that women get away with saying very little ... In my opinion, women need and want someone to look up to that they feel have the full sense of who they are, and says, `I'm great.'"

She could be talking out of both sides of her mouth, but I prefer to see it as her opinions possibly evolving and her becoming more comfortable with with the f-word as she becomes more comfortable with herself.

Certainly I get a bit of a feminist vibe from her music and videos.

I'd have to say

I have 2 favorites this year, they are Jane Lynch and Wanda Sykes, they are both amazingly funny and such great actresses!

Lady Gaga's music will have to grow on me, I'm not much into it. Am I alone in that one?

Sue Sylvester Express

I've loved Jane Lynch since i saw her in 40yr. Old Virgin, she is finally getting the publicity she deserves.  She is one funny lady, and i am definitely rooting for her to win the Golden Globe, which i'm sure she will, she deserves it.  I can't wait to see what else she has in store for us for this upcoming year.

Shewired Gay Woman of the Year - Vote Lynch!

I can't believe that Jill Bennett and Cathy DeBuono are leading the pack with a 53% vote! NOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Yet Jane Lynch only gets 4% of the vote on the Shewired.com site???

What's with that?

Please do not

Ethnic cleansing and genocide are not things we can afford to be politically neutral about.  Would you support a website that champions queer Nazis or lesbian KKK?  What is happening everyday in Gaza is pure evil, as are the Zionists responsible.  Shewired supports and promotes that horror.  AE is way better anyway!

music and the deaf

Definitely a Lady Gaga fan here!

Please check out our new project, support it if you can, and share it with your colleagues, friends, family... imagine what it would be like never to hear music, an elemental human experience, woven into every facet of our lives.  But read the text at this link...  we, the hearing, perhaps have more to learn from the singular experiences of the deaf than we'd ever think about:  http://tinyurl.com/ybec2ke
