Lesbian Scientistics: Women who make us laugh vs. those that make us cry

When we started our Lesbian Scientistics program at AfterEllen.com, we were interested in answering one question: Are powerful women hot? The answer was yes, sort of. Actually, it was kind of inconclusive. While lesbians, it seems, are attracted to power, they think other qualities are hot too. But what other qualities? Well, last week when the Emmy finalists were announced, it seemed a perfect time to do a little more scientific research.

Firstly, we looked at the nominees for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama:

Sally Field, Brothers and Sisters
Kyra Sedgwick, The Closer
Glenn Close, Damages
Mariska Hargitay, Law and Order: SVU
Holly Hunter, Saving Grace

Secondly, we pondered the women nominated for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy:

Julia Louis-Dreyfus, The New Adventures of Old Christine
Christina Applegate, Samantha Who?
Tina Fey, 30 Rock
America Ferrera, Ugly Betty
Mary-Louise Parker, Weeds

According to our study, 60% of funny women are hot, whereas only 20% of dramatic women are hot. Our researchers were shocked! We thought lesbians loved drama. How else can one explain the staying-friends-with-your-ex phenomenon? Consider the wise words of AfterEllen.com blogger and author of Stuff Lesbians like, Grace Chu:

Lesbians like drama. Lesbians will not hesitate to instigate a confrontation, because it gives them the opportunity to process, process and process some more until they eventually resolve the conflict. Resolving conflict gives lesbians a sense of accomplishment. Lesbians will artificially initiate a conflict just to feel the sense of accomplishment resulting from resolving the conflict.

We emailed Grace to help with our research. If lesbians really don't like drama, what other Sapphic stereotypes are wrong? Is the U-Haul thing a myth? Are leather wrist cuffs not a dead giveaway? Are Birkenstocks straight? What are we supposed to do with these flannel shirts?!

"Calm down," Grace Chu told us. "Drama begets comedy. Once the 'poor me!' statute of limitations has passed, our past suffering becomes fodder for comedy."

We breathed a huge sigh of relief. Then we delved even deeper into Grace Chu's data:

If our research is correct, lesbians find funny women 40% hotter than dramatic women. We realize, of course, that we may be playing too loosely with the word "drama." When lesbian drama is initiated it looks like texting your friends when you know they're out with your ex-girlfriend. When Mariska Hargitay initiates drama, it looks like this:

Big difference, we hope.

    so funny and so true

OMG, i almost fell off my chair laughing. We must love drama if we endure friendship with our exes or crushes, but humor is so much sexier.

    Great!

I have been sick for the last two days, and this cheered me up. Thanks for the laugh!

I have always found funny to be way sexier than drama, although I would make an exception for Mariska Hargitay!

I saw this and immediately became much happier, as I just experienced my first California earthquake! Needed the laughs. Love lesbian scientists :)

    LMFAO. So true.

Then again, just because we cannot help ourselves creating drama and processing, doesn't mean we think it's hot....

    Drama = mmm!

Out of all the women nominated, Mariska Hargitay was the only woman I voted for...I hope she wins too, her nomination is well deserved for her undercover episode last season.

Although I hope this doesnt mean I don't find funny women hot...just not the ones nominated!

    Too Much Drama

Maybe the reason that drama is less sexy (according to the After Ellen Hot 100) is because lesbians already have too much of it.  Maybe they like comedy more (mmm, Tina Fey) because it's escape from all the daily drama they induce.

And they don't get TNT.  That might help explain it, too.

    We need more empirical data!

I love the reckless abandon you use when declaring these stats as scientific.  It makes me laugh every time.

    I like the funny...

My partner is funny. We're funny. We make jokes instead of processing. If we fight, which is rare, we avoid each other for 30 minutes, and then make fun of why we fought. Neither of us is friends with our exes. We've been together 11 years. Take note.

Comedy causes a sudden involuntary reaction which feels euphoric and is accompanied by really strange sounds. Sometimes it's a whole bunch of little reactions. Sometimes it's one big one. If it lasts a long time, afterwords you feel spent and relieved. Think about it.

    Brutal_Romance's picture

    thats strange

i follow the 'straight' mentality when i actually tell a girl i just broke up with 'lets stay freinds'. it usually means, 'bitch, lose my number'. :P

    Venn Diagrams?

Yay - real-life lesbian scientist here!

This was too funny....especially the "I want the drama of a bad relationship without the sex"...sad that it is so true...

However, I think it is time for you to spice it up with some Venn diagrams....along the lines of "I want to have sex with you, but then I hope you die in a fire"...

    crispay's picture

    Ah graphs :)

How I love a pie chart.

I enjoy Elaine and her dancing :P The jerky kicks and sticky up thumbs - ah good times...

And in real life, I avoid any kind of drama if possible.

    Hot vs. NOT

"According to our study, 60% of funny women are hot, whereas only 20% of dramatic women are hot."

These statistics seem to mirror heterosexual attraction as more women find men with a good sense of humor hot.

Umm the thing is that many men believe that women are attracted to them if they are powerful but the dirty little secret is that many men have the personality of a cast iron skillet and so it's only natural that they compensate with tangibles like cars and money and other status symbols.

    battlingbard's picture

    Guffaw!

I love a good pie chart. You're the only person I know who can make statistics entertaining. If my stats class at OSU had been half this entertaining I would have been more inclined to show up and pay attention.
