Keira Knightley: quite possibly a Fair Lady

The most a girl could ever hope for in life is to be a professional athlete, or a pirate, or a Jane Austen heroine, or the lead in a Broadway musical. Last week reported that Keira Knightley is in talks to star in a remake of My Fair Lady, so I guess that makes her the luckiest girl in the world.

To wit:

The star of films such as Pirates of the Caribbean, Pride and Prejudice, and Bend it like Beckham might be teaming with Columbia Pictures to play the role of flower girl Eliza Doolittle in the remake of the 1965 Oscar-winning musical. The score from the original movie is to remain in tact, along with the 1912 setting. This time around, however, Columbia Pictures wants to take the filming to the central London locations of Covent Garden, Drury Lane, Tottenham Court Road, Wimpole Street and the Ascot racecourses, instead of soundstage that was exclusively used in the 1964 movie.

Audrey Hepburn, of course, played Eliza Doolittle in the original film version of My Fair Lady. Parenthetically, Julie Andrews had been receiving rave reviews in the Broadway production of the musical for years, but producers wanted to go with a bigger name for the film, so they chose Hepburn. Her singing was eventually dubbed by Marni Nixon, though, because Hebpurn's voice wasn't strong enough. Andrews starred in Mary Poppins that year instead of My Fair Lady, and she later won a Golden Globe and an Oscar for her portrayal of the whimsical, singing nanny.

This is not an acceptable option, however, for Keira Knightley. If she were ever given the choice between Mary Poppins and Eliza Doolittle, it is imperative that she choose the latter. Julie Andrews/Mary Poppins/Fraulein Maria has always been a fantasy mother figure to me, and Keira Knightley decidedly does not play that role in my imagination. In fact, the role Keira Knightley plays is more like the 50-second through one-minute section in her new trailer for The Duchess. (The part where she's walking through a candlelit room looking at me all seductively.)

No word yet on whether Knightley will sing her own songs for the remake of My Fair Lady.

Do you think she can pull off Eliza Doolittle? If not, who would be a great Fair Lady to follow up Audrey Hepburn?

    Good choice :-)

I think that Keira would make a really good Eliza Doolittle.  I enjoyed the original, and feel like she could do a convincing job in the transformation that we see with Doolittle.  I mean, clearly she's no Audrey Hepburn, but for so many viewers, it won't be an issue of comparison (as I'm guessing many have not seen the original).

    ummmm

if there was no article about this being an adaptation of my fair lady i would have no idea it was even related!
i'm a massive my fair lady fan and i recently saw pygmalion in the theatre and neither bare any resemblance to that trailer! Keira Kneightly might be a good actress (although i only think she is for bend it like beckham) but she certainly isn't the next eliza dolittle!

    the trailer...

... is for Keira's upcoming movie The Duchess, not for My Fair Lady. Given that they're only in talks for the remake, I don't think they've got as far as making a trailer yet ;)

    Duh

Um .... this review states that the trailer is for The Duchess... and if it doesn't state it directly, then it should automatically be assumed, seeing as Keira Knightley for My Fair Lady is still "rumored".

I think that movie clip was from the The Duchess, not the new My Fair Lady. I don't think that's even in production yet.

    A New one?

My question is why do we need a new one? If they are only going to shoot on location it doesn't seem that we need a new one. Is Hollywood that low on ideas? There is nothing wrong with the Hepburn version.  Could Knightley play Ms Doolittle, yes I sure she could but why would she want to be compaired to Hepburn? Hepburn is a movie legend. Knightley isn't to that yet. Oh god, more over who would they pick to play Henry Higgins? It seems a foolish move, to remake the movie. It isn't that old of a movie and it is still on tv often enough that the younger generations have seen it.

I think that it's not so

I think that it's not so bad to remake classics. I love the original My Fair Lady and I don't think Keira Knightley will do a better job than Audrey Hepburn because that role will always be Audrey..to me at least. But she'll be OK, she'll be watchable. Besides, she is still young in her career and still making her niche. Maybe she will be a legend like Audrey or maybe not (personally I don't think so) but I think she'll be good in this role and all we can do is wait and see..

I think that some people would be more likely to watch Keira's versian at the cinemas than the older versian and that'll help keep the classic story alive. Which I think, is important.

    My Fair Lady!!!!!

I really love the original. So I wouldn't want a new one, however I think that Kiera Knightley would probably be the closest match to Audrey Hepburn, they have a similar face structure. But I will always love Hepburn as Eliza. *I just got the songs out of my head and now they are all flooding back- wanders off singing*

    Fraggly

Am getting quite tired of all these remakes, but I do enjoy me some Keira, she's lovely. I reckon she'd be a good choice.

She does like her period films though doesn't she.

I was thinking the same thing

I've had my full of remakes too. Did everyone run out of original ideas?

And your right, It seems the Keira can't cut it in the 21st century.

    kallisti's picture

    Yep.

Yes, they did. The worst of it is that they make terrible remakes of films, etc. that were already perfect. *cough-TheSingingDetective-cough*

I quite like Keira, really. But hell, I'm shallow.

    My Fair Lady Remake

If they really feel the need to do a remake of My Fair Lady (I've been accused of being a purist and am not typically a fan of adaptations, remakes or anything that messes with an original piece of work that I'm fond of,) then I think Keira Knightley is a pretty good choice. She's got a good look for the part, she's talented and is able to pull of period pieces... that having been said, Audrey Hepburn will always be my Eliza Doolittle, Mary Martin will always be my Peter Pan and Lesley Ann Warren will always be my Cinderella.

    I think Keira Knightley

I think Keira Knightley probably could play Eliza, but I don't think she should, I don't think they should do a remake at all, I adore the original and wouldn't necessarily like them to do a new version!!

    Interesting

I never thought about it before, but Keira Knightley really could pull off an Audrey Hepburn role. I agree with previous commenters, however; I don't think that we need a remake of My Fair Lady. But mostly I'm just shocked that I even consider Keira Knightley a viable replacement (which is the wrong word, but I can't think of the proper term at the moment) for Audrey Hepburn. Who would have that anyone could replace Audrey?

    Did they learn nothing the

Did they learn nothing the first time around?  Cast an actress who can sing!  I like Audrey Hepburn, but Julie Andrews should have been Eliza Doolittle.  At least Kiera Knightly is Brittish.

    Hmmm...

I don't think film-makers understand the rule 'thou shalt not remake a movie starring Audrey Hepburn.' The makers of Sabrina and the truly awful remake of Charade did not understand this. As much as I have liked Keira in the past, you just don't mess with ultimate in gamine perfection...

I'm a big Julie Andrews fan too and she was well and truly left out int he cold when it came to the film version for which she was absolutely perfect, but in the end, Audrey made it...and no one could ever look as regal as the transformed Eliza.

There are some movies you just don't need to remake, Gone with the Wind...and anything starring Audrey Hepburn.

    word...

    Couldn't have said it better...

I L-O-V-E Audrey Hepburn, and it goes without saying that My Fair Lady is one of my favorite movies ever. I erm, like Keira, but I don't want to see the same gal that was almost Parminder Nagra's girlfriend on Bend it like Beckham sing me "Wouldn't it be Loverly"... it won't happen... ever.... I like her, but like you said, you just DON'T remake classic movies. Especially Audrey Hepburn movies. No one can even come close to her.

Oh, I've seen the show in a play and I really believe that Knightley fits perfectly! Good choice!
    adavros's picture

    completely different choice

well, a completely different choice to play doolittle could be Anne Hathaway...sure she doesn't have the accent, but i think she can sing, and she could always work on the accent. She also kinda looks like hepburn, but i understand the drive to not remake movies that originally had hepburn as the leading lass.

And in response to vfullart, yeah Hollywood is that low on ideas. Originality is hard to come by these days

    cfinlm's picture

    I never really thought about

I never really thought about it before but Kiera playing Eliza seems like a good fit. My only question though is can she sing?

I'm not sure a remake is necessary but it makes me curious too see who they would cast to play professor higgins and pickering? Not that these roles need to be played by anyone famous but it seems like the original actors perfectly fit their characters and anything else would lead to a let down.
    Gina05's picture

    NO!!!

For the love of God Hollywood. KNOCK IT OFF! No matter how Hepburn'esque Knightley is, isn't the point. The point is they want to remake My Fair Lady. No, never, no more Audrey Hepburn remakes. Good god. What's next? Casablanca? Gone with the Wind? Sound of Music? West Side Story? Breakfast at Tiffany's? With the rate (or lack there of) of originality going on in La-La land these days, anything they remake wont surprise me. I'll just be glad not to give them my dollars worth.

Bitterness aside, if they do remake this, just dont cast Jennifer Love Hewitt or in any Audrey Hepburn remake down the road. Did you see her in the Audrey Hepburn story? Gag!

    VickiVickyVickie's picture

    Well

If I'm not mistaken the point of a remake it to completly redo the movie for the current audience. Why does this Eliza Have to look like Audrey Hepburn at all? I mean if your going to mess with such a great plot, I would change it completely so they wouldn't get compared (if that's possible) I'd like to see the movie setting somewhere off the wall like India or China or something. And make Eliza a man, we can call him Eli. Who wants to an why watch a movie that looks and sounds exactly the same as another movie?  Plus didn't work with West Side Story?

    wendy.l's picture

She looks the part, but can she sing?

I think look-wise, Keira is a perfect Eliza Doolittle. As for her singing abilities though... I hope she can pull it off but I'm not entirely convinced. Would be a shame if they dubbed her though.

All in all, I hope they chose her because she had a voice, not just a face. Cause if that's the case, they might as well have redone Pygmalion instead, Bernard Shaw's original non-musical play. I'm sure she'd be fantastic in that.

    Shorty AZK's picture

    Absolutely, I

Absolutely, I agree.....Pygmalion- yes, My Fair Lady - not so much!
