Keeping Score: What's a lesbian to do with the NFL?

Last weekend I was faced with the unhappy task of admitting to my grandfather that I forgot to watch the NCAA Football Championship because I was exercising my DVR with 30 Rock reruns. The look on his face told me it was a great betrayal. He has no grandsons and all granddaughters; what's the point of one of them being a lesbian if you can't talk sports with her?

I understand the role of certain things in a lesbian's life: WNBA, yes; advanced degrees, yes; The L Word, yes; Tina Fey, yes; but where does football belong? I need an answer because Super Bowl Sunday is fast-approaching!

My personal understanding of football works like this:

I understand for other lesbians it works differently. Maybe you are stoked about this weekend's NFC championship game between the Eagles and the Cards or the AFC game between the Ravens and the Steelers. Or maybe you're all bummed because you're a Chargers or Giants fan or something.

Where does football fit into your life? Are you excited about the upcoming Super Bowl? Real live boys pounding each other in the heads or Helen Hunt in Quarterback Princess?

Love football

I've been a fan of the WNBA since its inception, have an advanced degree, watch The L Word, and love Tina Fey. And I watch football -- which I usually watch with my wife and/or some other lesbian friends. Assuming that I have a rooting interest, I watch the Superbowl for the game, not the commercials.

This weekend, I'll be watching the AFC Championship game with a bunch of other Pittsburgh fans at the home of a friend who plans to make Pittsburgh food for the occasion. (For the record, I have no personal connection to Pittsburgh; I'm just a Steelers fan.)

If The Quarterback Princess ever comes out on dvd, I'll be first in line to buy it. (I was excited to watch it when it first aired on television.) However, although I often prefer women's sports to men's, I have no interest in women's professional football.

And that is the role of football in my life. :-)

FOOOTBAAAALLLL!!!!!

This is my game. Basketball bores me to tears as much as baseball. Football is just raw power and aggression. The struggle to overcome your foes and make it to the goal. It's amazing! Hearing the grunts and cracks of gaurds and helmets just makes me wanna thump my chest. I guess I see football the way I see a metal concert. The energy just takes you away. Of course, my wife has to be explained somethings and and she would rather lay in bed and cuddle than let me sit on the couch with a beer watchin a game but she understands my need for and outlet of the pent up energy I hold in during a week of complaints at work. I can't watch Gossip Girls. Screw fashion up the hoohah!!! Give me football!!!!

I Love Football!

But no NFL, I am from Canada eh. I like me some CFL GO RIDERS GO!!

Dying to say this to you

the butt thing

My straight girlfriends seem to really like the those uniformed tight butts more than anything else about the game--and what I have always been curious about is what is with all the butt slapping in the game. It screams for a Freudian and Queer analysis. ~Becky

Poisoned against it?

I was a "sexually active band geek" in high school, so it wasn't uncommon for the marching band to have to endure fifteen game long season, after season...after season. (Small town + old guys living vicariously through young guys = one freakishly successful football team.) After six or so years of that, I couldn't care less if I never saw another halftime show or ate another bag of boiled peanuts again.

I think that's why when a football game is on, I change the channel quicker than you can say "touchdown".

I do love that episode of Friends, though, <3.

I prefer the NCAA over the NFL, but I really enjoy the game.

NCAA all the way

I don't really follow football, but whenever I watch it I enjoy it.  I also like the NCAA better, mostly because I'm from the south where college is where it's at.  The BCS game was great.  Okay mostly because I'm a Gator fan, but it was also a really good game.

The only pro game I usually watch is the Superbowl, and I usually just pick one team to root for and enjoy myself.

Hannah's picture

Forgot?

you *forgot* to watch the BCS Championship game?  How is it possible to forget about any of the 5 BCS games?  (Especially when OU gets beaten by a SEC team;) ) I'm with your grandfather on this one.

So, obviously, I love me some football, even though I endured cold football games as a band member as well.  And our high school team had some...less sucessful years.  I, however, only watch about 4 NFL games a a year.  I'll watch the superbowl, but I don't care much.  the NFL just is less exciting and the players/coaches/owners are often obnoxious.  But, give me some Auburn college football!  Even in tough times, it's great to be an Auburn Tiger.

I'm super sad that the college season is over, but luckily baseball is just around the corner!  And, Friday Night Lights is coming back on Friday.  That'll help ease my football withdrawl.

Ugh...Freakin' Auburn.

Ugh...Freakin' Auburn. Stole 2 of our best coaches you did! Curtis Luper & Trooper Taylor!

:) Actually best of luck to them! In the meantime...Go Cowboys!  Yes, I even follow coaching changes and recruiting.

I'm an Oklahoma Lesbian... our women's football team consistently competes for their national championship too! Go OKC Lightening!

love for the black and gold

lol growing up in pittsburgh, it's pretty much religion to be a die hard steelers fan regardless of who you are.  So of course i'm no exception. My dad has season tickets so i've been fortunate enough to go to all the games since I was a kid.
I'll be at the AFC Championship game this sunday against the ravens!!! its the greatest time of year to be a fan of the black and gold!!! it feels good to be a part of steeler nation!!!!!!

but i do love women's football as well. One of my best friends used to play for the Pittsburgh Passion-our women's football team. I helped keep stats for a season and it was awesome!

I love all sports, but football has always just been my favorite to watch!! GO STEELERS!! :)

BiRobot's picture

I'm from Pittsburgh, too,

I'm from Pittsburgh, too, and I can honestly say that I was bred to love the Steelers. It wasn't really a choice in my house.  When I was younger, I really hated football and protested, but now, I'm in my 86 jersey waving my Terrible Towel with the best of them!

I don't understand the idea of not liking the NFL because it's all men.  Sure, perhaps you don't like football, but why is that any different than not liking other sports, like soccer or basketball?  Would it also be okay to like the WNBA but not the NBA?  I like to support female sports (I ADORE the WNBA), but men exist, too, and if they're working hard for their sport, can't we support them and the women?  Why must it be about sex and not sport?

"No problem is insoluble, given a big enough plastic bag."

Steelers Gaytion!

Add me to the list of Steeler fans who were bred to adore the team. As a young girl I wasn't really that into football (though I was a HS cheerleader), but I grew into it eventually. Now I am in my 36 jersey waving my terrible towels as well.

I'm glad to see a post on AE about football. Plenty of us love it. I too, have several degrees (one of which is in women's studies) and watch the L-Word and all, but my heart belongs to the Steelers.

The only thing worse then football

was a girlfriend who loved it.  A Sunday during football season was an argument waiting to happen.

Disappointed

Two large disappointments of my year:

I had to watch my beloved Mizzou Tigers crash and burn after being undefeated for half their season.

And after freezing my ass off at LP Field this past weekend just to watch the Tennessee Titans lose in the last seconds of the game....I don't think I will be able to bring myself to enjoy football again anytime soon.  :-(

moony's picture

Titans

I froze my ass off at that game, too.  I love the Titans 'cos they're my hometown team, but wow, did they ever deserve to lose that game.  Technically, they lost in the last seconds, but really, they lost by not showing up for the rest of the game.  And I'm a little annoyed with Fisher for not going for it when we were 4th and inches away from a first down deep in touchdown territory with less than 4 and a half minutes left in the game.  Argh!  Ah, but who knows if that would have changed the outcome, anyway.  Oh well, next year, next year....

margaretrosey's picture

Agreed

I agree with you - we just played horribly on Saturday.  My favorite was when we literally tackled the Ravens player into their end zone.  Nice one, guys.
DANA's picture

titans

sounds like a titans play! I am not going to lie I was pretty happy that they lost but that is just because I had to work that day and it kept all the crazy excited titans winning fans out of my store and left them home drunk and sad. So that is really the only reason. My colts got knocked out first round and they played like crap. The titans pretty much lost it for themselves. But it is all good my GATORS took home the title again :-).
gpawlf's picture

lol...

I feel your pain.  I am Clemson Tiger fan...so the NCAA season was quickly soured when we got spanked by Bama...

I'm also a Carolina Panther fan, and I sat in the cold rain Saturday night watching a smackdown by the Cardinals. I still love football though.

Also, I may be alone in this, but I gave up on the WNBA years ago. I can't take it. I just prefer college.

OrangeGirl17's picture

Yeah, I believe their first

Yeah, I believe their (Mizzou Tigers) first loss came at home to my OKLAHOMA STATE COWBOYS! Sorry, I won't heckle too much - we got our butts handed to us by Texas Tech. But that game was an unexpected win even by Cowboy fans.

And the Big 12 North held up their end in the Bowl Season whereas only Texas did in the South... oops...

margaretrosey's picture

Ugh

I won't go into my feelings on Oklahoma State  ;-)

Cardinals

A little over a year ago I moved to Arizona from New England--where the Patriots Rule--and everyone is an obsessed fan. What a shock the Arizona Cardinals were--a less than half-ass team that split St. Louis in the middle of the night seeking a better stadium.

And cardinals,as pretty as they are, don't fit in all that well with tough desert critters like javalenias and snakes.

Not to mention what is a cardinal doing as a football mascot period--although I have heard the pretty bird is a mean little sucker--that will perch on your upper lip and peck out your eyeballs.

Well, maybe so--to my shock (and the shock of the world including the Cardinals) they are a game away from the Super Bowl.

So despite it all, I have to be excited about that.

Love the pigskin!

I loved playing in the AfterEllen fantasy football league this season. Go Krushers! Came in 3rd which is the best season I've had in fantasy.

Every Christmas when I was little, I imagined decorating my bedroom in all the cool NY Giants football gear available in the various catalogs. And every Christmas I was disappointed.

I say we ladies get to enjoy football without explanation. Besides, most TV programming defies explanation.

Harpy's picture

Chicago Bears!

I'll of course watch the two remaining playoff games, but this year is really disappointing because I don't really care about any of the teams.  Donovan McNabb going to the Super Bowl would be nice to see, but he's always been such an inconsistant Quarterback that I worry it will be a blowout.

I hate the Ravens.  I don't really like the Steelers but I think Hines Ward is a class-act and like him.  The only thing I want for the remainer of the season is for the Ravens to lose.

I suppose I'll go for the Arizona Cardinals because they haven't been to the Super Bowl.  I can also kind of make an argument for them as well since they were the Chicago Cardinals years and years ago.  :P

Their defense has been absolutely insane in the last two playoff games and Warner has got some kinda mid-life flame under his ass.  I think the Cardinals are going to go.  And again, hopefully the Ravens lose.

Same thing I say every year: Next year it's a Bears Super Bowl!  Maybe I'll also finally win a Super Bowl in the AE Fantasy league.  Three times in a row to the Super Bowl and I lose every time!!!

GO BEARS IN 2009!!

Denver Broncos

I am a die hard Denver Broncos fan who seems to lose perspective on life during the games. I love watching the sport and I can spend entire Sundays watching all the games in a bar with my friends. I have fantasy teams and I even follow the off season closely watching the draft in April. Foretunately my girlfriend loves the sport too so I don't torture her with it. However when the Giants and the Broncos play we never ever speak of it and we watch the game seperately.

Yay for football!!

I'm so excited to see an article on AfterEllen about football.  I probably do love soccer more, but living in America makes it hard to watch quality soccer games, where there is quality football all around me.  Before I came out, my friends would always joke that I would make some man very happy one day because of my love of sports, especially football....oh well ;)

I personally prefer college over the NFL, but I've been in a fantasy football league the last two years with some old friends from a campus ministry, so I've had to stay up-to-date with the NFL as well.  After faltering at the end of the regular season, I can't believe that the Cardinals have done so well in the playoffs.  I kinda see them as the 'feel good' team of the year (that's still in it).  I doubt that Kurt Warner is a 'fan of the gays' but he seems like a really good guy in a lot of ways, and I love seeing him succeeding after being cut by the Rams.  I'll be the first to admit that I totally thought he was washed up after leaving St. Louis.

honestly, i dont get football at all. but little giants and the annexation of puerto rico? priceless.

there is something about football movies that makes me happy, though - maybe because you only see the exciting plays, or because there's always good pump up music (like My Hero in Varsity Blues), or some hot girl painting herself in whipped cream...

Football is awesome. Period. I'm sad the NFL season is almost over, but SO happy my Gators won another NCAA National Championship and looking forward to next year when they win another!

Glory Glory to the Georgia :)

Football is my reason to breathe in the fall. I can't stand NFL though. I watch the playoffs and the Superbowl and that's about it, but when it comes to NCAA. I'm all over it. Saturdays are my days off and I never go out with my friends. I just stay home and watch football with the family. It's the greatest bonding time ever.

Go dawgs! :)

Football & Lesbians -hand-in-hand in the "Midwest" aka Heartland

Friends of mine have a virtual palace - decorated in OU Sooner decorum and rabid... I'm enthusiastic OU Sooner fans... the house was eerily silent in the 4th qtr of the National Championship.  I went to the other Oklahoma school...Oklahoma State University - where most fans are fans because they have a tie or actually went to school there.

But - that being said... I know very few lesbians in Oklahoma, Texas, etc. that aren't football fans.  Isn't Jill Bennett an insane Colts fan and from Indiana?

During football season - we watch a lot of football, participate in football pots, watch parties, sport our favorite players jersey, etc. In Oklahoma - very few people CAN'T tell you what OU quarterback Sam Bradford had for breakfast... lol.... and are anxiously awaiting to find out if he'll go to the NFL.

I know that my friends and I are also aware of what happens in the NFL draft, what goes on in college recruiting and with coaching changes.

Granted...I know a lot of straight women in Oklahoma that know at least college football. (LOL - almost a requirement to catch a man.)

The FEW lesbians I know that aren't into football - know very little about it - whereas the others...are calling plays and coverages. :)

I'm a social football

I'm a social football watcher, If I'm with people who are really into it, I am too, but if I try to watch alone it's just sad and I stop. If you ask,  I'll say I'm a Broncos fan though, so that's pretty much the extent of it.

NO NO NO to Football

Don't quite understand it, don't watch it.

Last season (or whenever the last big Superbowl game was on) my coworker asked me if I watched, and when I said no he looked at me like I had five heads.

That's not how you play football!!!

I'm from Melbourne, Australia, and I'm mad about Aussie Rules football. It's the biggest sport here, and I think it's the best game in the world. I've tried watching NFL and to be honest I just get bored. It's so stop and start, you've got to move on an entirely different team when the play changes. AFL is so fast and smooth.

And there's NO PADDING. These guys do some intence stuff, they're tackled to the ground, they're running, they're diving to take insanly difficult marks, and they're actually kicking the ball while running. You guys've gotta stop and stand still!

Plenty of women here LOVE AFL. My mum is mad about it. My girlfriend can't stand it, unfortunately, but oh well.

2 ex-AFL players are playing off for a spot in the Superbowl. Ben Graham, ex Geelong Captain, is kicker for the Arizona Cardinals, and Sav Rocca ex North Melbourne and Collingwood legend, is kicker for the Phillidelphia Eagles. Yay my Aussie boys!! :D

Football is my life

As my pic can attest, I love football above everything else except my family.  Oh, and maybe archaeology but grad school can get can old sometimes.  My mom turned me into a rabid Michigan fan since birth (I was in the womb during football season).  I will watch any kind of football-college, AFL, CFL, NFL.  There is nothing like college though (especially because I have the misfortune of being a Lions fan).

I also play football for the Treetown Spitfire.  Girls do play football and I have the scars to prove it!

GO LIONS?!

I love football.  I prefer NCAA over NFL.  I only started watching NFL to follow college players.  Go Michigan Wolverines!!!! Unfortunately, I am a Detroit Lions fan.  A perfect defeated season.  Hey, it can only get better next season.  I am going for the Raven to win it all.  It's just a feeling and I like saying Joe Flacco's name (I have no idea why).
