Keeping Score: The WNBA is in the money

In case you missed the headlines on the front page of every major newspaper in America yesterday morning, let me sum up the news for you: Your money is still on fire, and if you are an American taxpayer, you're about to win $700 billion worth of private debt. Yet here's something to smile about: One of the few organizations experiencing growth in this plummeting economy is the WNBA.

WNBA.com traffic is up, attendance is up and TV ratings are up 20 percent. While everyone else is downsizing, the WNBA is actually growing.

Part of the league's success can be attributed to the fact that eight teams are now independent of the NBA. (And, in my opinion, the more the WNBA can do to distance itself from the NBA, the better.) The Olympics exposure boosted public interest, leading to a record 46 sellouts. And this rookie class (Candice Wiggins, Candace Parker, Sylvia Fowles) has certainly lived up to the hype.

The WNBA is even hoping to grow itself two more teams in the next five years.

Tonight, you can continue to boost the WNBA's numbers by tuning in to ESPN2 to watch the conclusion of the conference semifinals. It's the Fever and the Shock at 7 p.m. ET, and the Sparks and the Storm at 9 p.m.

I have been reluctant to write about the WNBA in Keeping Score thus far because I don't really like to fight. I hate to perpetuate a lesbian stereotype here, but — good grief! — lesbians like to argue about the WNBA.

I know some of you will have to attack me now, but here's my prediction: Fever over the Shock in the 7 p.m. game. And Sparks over the Storm in the 9 p.m. game. I also predict a N.Y. Liberty vs. L.A. Sparks final.

What do you think about tonight's games, and who have you picked to go all the way?

going through Detroit is gonna hurt

I'm a big liberty fan and I watched the game tonight...oy.Detroit is so strong willed. Katie Smith is so scary, but seeing Deanna Nolan as she runs past you as your ankles are breaking has got to be worse. i love my super young lib players: will the really old Shock players finally break down? i don't think so....i have one thing that bugs the crap out of me: Bill Lambeer intimidating refs, especially the female refs, just like he did when he was a bully player. Sit down Bill, it's getting old, just like your team....I think Becky and the silver stars are the upset team to watch: go VJ!

    It's about time the

It's about time the WNBA makes some progress! I know this season I've been much more into it and these playoffs have been extremely exciting!! I have a hard time cause I have 2 favorite teams. And there's a good chance their going to be meeting in the next round. Although the way the score is looking right now I'll be chanting beat LA instead of being torn between the Storm and the Silver Stars.

    Anyone but Detroit/LA

I'm a high school teacher, and we're currently having a spirit week in honor of Saturday's homecoming game. Monday was sports team day, so I wore my Sue Bird jersey, hoping it would help Seattle win last night's game. Today, to mourn last night's 7-point loss to LA, I wore my Storm hat.

I live on the east coast, so I also like the Liberty.  NYC is only a few hours away, so I always try to go to at least one game every season.  I can't stand Detroit, and I've never liked LA.

I would LOVE to see a Silver Stars/Liberty final because I actually like both teams, and I think they both deserve a title.  Detroit and LA already two championships, so it would be nice to see a new team win.

    Detroit vs. LA

I was hoping Sue and the Storm would have taken LA out; it would have been nice to see them go home early. So now I'm hoping the Silver Stars can do it but I don't think they have the depth to out play the 3 olympians, especially since their guards have been steppin up big time. So my guess is LA taking on Detroit for the title. I know there's a lot of Liberty fans but if Tweety alone gets hot, they don't have much of a chance. If Tweety AND Katie get hot, and Braxton has her shit together...they don't have a chance at all. And this is WITHOUT Pearson playing. If she's good to go, good luck NY. This would have been a whole different tournament with Ford able to play.

What do y'all think about the MVP candidates? CP3 maybe a bit over-rated considering who she has on her team that helps her look that good (she IS an amazing basketball player and has a lot of MVP's coming her way...I'm definately not doubting that)? Sue Bird stepping up and carrying her team with Lauren out?...the Storm wouldn't have gotten that far without her. Whalen definately knows how to fill the highlight reel up!!! And Young is outstanding. I'm hoping Sue gets it but I have a feeling it's guna be Parker. I mean come on...NCAA Championship, VERY possible WNBA Championship, Olympic Gold Metalist, Rookie of the Year and maybe MVP??? If LA can get the Championship, CP3 is gonna get the MVP.
