Keeping Score: The Williams sisters face off in U.S. Open quarterfinals

"Keeping Score" is a new weekly sports blog we'll be running on AfterEllen.com, written by your favorite Lesbian Scientistics expert, Stuntdouble. Check back every Tuesday for her report on women in sports.

Just a few weeks ago in Beijing, Venus and Serena Williams stood hand-in-hand atop the gold medal platform, celebrating their Olympic doubles victory. Now it's back to opposite sides of the net for a quarterfinal showdown at the U.S. Open. Ah, the uniquely complex relationship between sisters.

Both Venus and Serena dismissed their fourth-round opponents easily in yesterday's U.S. Open matches. Seventh-seeded Venus trounced Poland's Agnieszka Radwanska 6-1, 6-3 in the afternoon, and fourth-seeded Serena toppled France's Severine Bremond 6-2, 6-2 in the night game.

"I just feel like, you know, we're both playing better and feeling better," Serena said. "We just had a turn in our careers. We're just playing the way we should play."

Matches between Venus and Serena are somewhat legendary at the U.S. Open. They swept the women's singles championships from 1999 to 2002, meeting each other in the finals in 2001 and 2002. In fact, the hype surrounding their matchups pushed tournament organizers to move the women's final to the Saturday night spot instead of early afternoon, for better television coverage.

There will be no Williams vs. Williams final this year, though. The luck of the draw put the sisters on the same side of the bracket. Their quarterfinal match will, however, be a bit of a tiebreaker.

The sisters have met up 16 times professionally; they've each won eight times. They've met 10 times in Grand Slam tournaments; they've each won five times.

"I would love to have a winning record," Venus said. "I have a chance."

When asked to define her rivalry with Venus, Serena called it "unique" and "classic."

Would she also call it "difficult," one reporter wanted to know.

"No. Not anymore," Serena said. "Just another match, another possibility for me."

Other fourth round advancers on Monday were sixth seed Dinara Safina, who defeated Anna-Lena Groenefeld 7-5, 6-0, and 16th seed Flavia Pennetta who beat Amelie Mauresmo 6-3, 6-0.

USA Network will be covering the quarterfinal action all day Wednesday. The women's singles final will be broadcast live Saturday night at 8:00 p.m. EST on CBS.

Love the attitude

I love the attitide that Serena has: "Just another match, another possibility for me." How would our lives be different if we saw the challenges as just another possibility?

I also wonder how their lives would have been different if they hadn't had each other. Would they have been as successful? I think having a "sister" (or sisters) is very powerful in a woman's life and can make all the difference.

Love the attitude

Susan Gabriel,

I find your comment interesting....Serena and Venus have definitely been each other's support system, and together they have staved off the slings and arrows that have been thrown their way by other players and at times the tour management itself. I find it absolutely amazing how they can each be so very competitive and supportive of each other at the same time. It's obvious their parents did an outstanding job in raising them because they are role models that any child could emulate. To raise one world class athlete is something, but two, and in the same sport is simply mind boggling. Hats off to the Williams family.

As soon as the draw came

As soon as the draw came out, I was dissapointed to see Serena & Venus in the same quarter of the draw because they are both playing so well.  I'm so very excited to watch their match tomorrow, and I have a good feeling that they're both going to play well.  I think Serena is a little bit more "hungry" for the win.

Oh damn it

Why are they in the same half of the draw,I wanted them both in the semi's to help get their rankings up.I love the Williams sisters (in a hero worship way,I don't fancy them) and they are a big reason I love tennis.Anyway go girls!!! and if your Quarters match is as good as your Wimbledon final i'll be happy, though I do want my girl Venus to come out the winner,I would love to see her get another US Open but I guess being Wimbledon singles champion and doubles champion, getting to the Quarters of the Olympics and getting gold for doubles, then the Quarters of the US is still a good couple of months work even if little sister wins, just so long as Serena at least makes the final.

I think they are great role models and I love how they don't like to challange the umpire or lines people (though sometimes they should) and are always gracious in lose or win ,then how supportive they are of eachother makes me like them all the more.

Oh Damn it

Not only are they in the same half of the draw, they are in the TOUGHER half of the draw....of the last eight players in the draw, they are the only two who've won a Grand Slam title...the rest are would be pretenders. I like Venus in the quarters against Serena, and I'm picking her to win the whole shooting match!!!

Brava to the Williams Sisters

I must agree that the sisters have wonderful attitudes.  Their competitiveness, drive and sheer talent are inspiring.  I never tire of watching them; no doubt, their match tomorrow will be another stellar display.  I'm totally looking forward to it.  If it's at all possible, I'm rooting for them both.  (It really is too bad about the draw.  I absolutely love when they play against each other in final rounds.  How cool is that!)  Venus and Serena rock hard!

Vee FTW!

It never seems right to me to see the Willies facing off before the semis of a major.

I think I'm gonna be rooting for Venus though. She doesn't scare me quite as much.

Woah, what a match!!!

Woah, what a match!!!  Venus had so many opportunities, but couldn't convert.  I was so hoping for a 3rd set, but that was and awsome & intense match.  I was hanging n every point.  Again, that so should've been the final.
