Keeping Score: The reign of the Lady Vols and Huskies

Every season, women's basketball commentators start playing fast and loose with the word "parity." The idea — which really caught hold in 1997, when Old Dominion made it to the National Championship game — is that mid-major schools are now able to recruit with the Pat Summitts and and Geno Auriemmas of the world, which means that they should be able to actually compete with the Lady Vols and the Huskies.

It's all been a bit of a pipe dream, really. In the years since ODU made it to the title game, Connecticut or Tennessee won eight of the eleven National Championship games. In three of those 11 games, they faced each other.

This year, though, it actually seems like "parity" might be more than a buzz word.

We're only two weeks into the season and there is upset noise all around.

Michigan lost to Akron and then rolled over No. 13 Vanderbilt. Detroit dropped two games and then beat No. 23 SEC-powerhouse Georgia. Florida lost to Florida Gulf Coast (yes, a real school), and then beat No. 21 Florida State in Tallahassee. After committing a sickening 25 turnovers and shooting 27 percent from the field, Hartford (yes, another real school) rolled over No. 5 Duke. Duke!

Tennessee almost lost to Chattanooga, a defeat that, in Knoxville, would have been akin to a couple of kids with sling shots defeating the entire armed forces of the United States of America.

On Nov. 16, the Women's Hoops Blog quipped, "Just so I can be the first to say it this season — has parity come to the women's game?"

On Nov. 17, after UConn played an unexpectedly tough game against Georgia Tech, and Baylor upset Stanford, Women's Hoops asked again, "No really, has parity come to the women's game?"

On Nov. 21, after all the madness mentioned above, Women's Hoops said one last time, "No, REALLY, has parity come to the women's game????"

It's a fair question, and unlike years past, it actually deserves to be asked.

Pat Summitt is famous for saying, "Offense sells tickets, defense wins games, rebounding wins championships." There's truth to that, of course. I mean, Pat Summitt knows what she's talking about: she's Pat Summitt — but there are other things that go into winning championships: seasoned coaches, tough schedules, player experience and, quite frankly, legacies.

If Florida Gulf Coast doesn't make it to the Elite 8, no one notices. If Tennessee doesn't make it, it's the biggest story in women's basketball in over a decade. There's a lot to be said for the motivation of a program that demands national championships.

The early season upsets are fun to watch, but I think it may be too early to call the playing field, er, basketball court, equal. What about you? Do you think the long-fabled parity has come to the women's game at last?

    Just "Huskies"

The team from Tennessee is the Lady Vols.  The team from Connecticut is the Huskies--not Lady Huskies.

    I think this year everyone

I think this year everyone needs to watch out for McGraw's Fightin' Irish... could see them take the Big East away from UConn after coming so close seven years ago. Fingers crossed anyway!

    Go Huskies!!!!

Ok, big UCONN fan here. But ya, i think it's cool to see all these mid majors giving these big teams a run for there money. I personally go to a mid major in the WAC. not the best place for great basketball, but i know i'd be syked and so happy if our women's team (or even our men's team for that matter) beat a school like baylor, or any in the lower top 25.

but of course i still want UCONN to win.

    OU

I'm hoping OU can break into the Final Four with it being the Paris sisters senior season.

Its going to be a fun season to watch in women's basketball. I love that no one knows what is going to happen.

I appreciate TN and UCONN and what they have done and think Pat Summit is unbelievable but I'm ready for some parity myself...

    Paris sisters

Agreed! I can't say how much I have loved watching the Paris twins play ball at OU. Courtney Paris is an absolute force, and she deserves every bit of recognition she gets this year for the records she is shattering.

    Paris

Its good to see other people outside of Oklahoma appreciating their talent. I have been a season ticket holder for 5 years now so I of course am an huge fan. But what Courtney has done/is doing with her double-double record is incredible not just for women's basketball but for the sport in general.

Ashely lost like 30lbs this summer and so far looks like she is going to have an incredible senior year.

    Love Women's Hoops

I love women's basketball and have been a Lady Vols fan for a long time. Having  said that, I would like to see more teams be competitive as it would add to the excitement and viewership of the sport!  It is a little early in the season to decide whether progress toward parity has actually arrived.

    about time!

It's time for some other team besides TN to win.  I always feel sorry for those girls;  there is no choice but to win when Pat Summitt is kicking a**.  Aren't sports supposed to be fun?  Of course, the arrogance of Candace Parker has been a big turn-off as well.  I hope we see some serious upsets and some real competition.

    parity?

I think that it is way too early in the season to even be thinking about parity! Wait until March and we will see how many of the "other" teams have made it into to tournament and how many of the perenial top tier teams don't make it to the tournament! That will show us if there is truely parity...

    I think the players are

I think the players are just getting better. Back in the day (not so long ago, actually), the WNBA didn't exist. Not that the league is flourishing right now, but it's in a better situation than before and college players actually know where they could be headed. I think that provides some incentive for fierce competition, as only a few get into the league.

I still think the Huskies and the Lady Vols will run somewhat roughshod over the rest, but I'm anticipating a few more upsets.

    Lady Vols doing it again

no matter who Pat Summits coaches she is always on top so many records she is definitely a hall of famer that should not be taken likely. Even when she played herself in college she was phenomenal. If the WNBA was around when she was still playing she would be unstoppable.

I am not trying to knock Mr. Geno but his numbers or style of coaching does not compare to that of Pat Summit. Huskies are in it this year but they will only go so far.

    Winningest NCAA Basketball Coach ever...

Pat Summit now has 987 wins (more than ANY other NCAA coach in either men's or women's basketball) and 8 NCAA Titles!
