It's time to start looking at Serena's titles

At the post-match press conference, Serena Williams said she hadn't expected a victory against her sister Venus in Saturday's Wimbledon final — yet, she somehow remembered to pack the fitted-T with her slogan printed right across her bosom: "Are you looking at my titles?"

Well, are you?

If not, maybe it's time to start paying attention.

With her most recent Wimbledon victory, Williams has 11 singles grand-slam tournament trophies, more than any active player. That means she could catch Billie Jean King — who won 12 singles slam titles — as early as September at the U.S. Open. After that, she'll be chasing Martina Navratilova and Chris Evert, who each won 18. (Steffi Graf won 22, and Margaret Court holds the record with 24.)

Williams is straddling the line between superstar and legend, and she knows it.

"I never thought I would be at this point where I would think about, 'Wow, I want to win X amount,'" Serena said at her post-victory press conference. "But for the first time in my career — well, the second time — I have a number that I want to reach."

The first was Monica Seles, who had a career nine grand-slam wins.

You know who else thinks Serena Williams is on a trajectory to tennis immortality? Billie Jean King. She was on hand for the tournament, and spoke to reporters about both Williams sisters afterward: "They are the two best athletes we have in our sport. They really could be regarded among the very best, with Martina Navratilova, Chris Evert and Steffi Graf if they are willing to pay the full price."

Of course, for every person who worships at the Nike-sponsored alter of Serena Williams, there is someone who delights in blasting her. She lacks finesse; her powerhouse game is bad for women's tennis. She doesn't have the focus to consistently compete because she cares to much about fashion/glamor/celebrity. And, perhaps the biggest criticism of all: She is just so arrogant!

It's not like you can argue with that last one: After her victory on Saturday, she didn't fall to her knees and thank the gods of All England. She skipped into the air, and then turned her thousand megawatt smile onto the crowd and began fanning herself, as if she'd just been showered with swoon-inducing praise, and my goodness, I think I might just have the vapors.

Apparently, Serena has always been a show-woman.

During the awards ceremony, Venus put aside her second place tea saucer-size trophy and took some candid photos of Serena with her serving platter-size prize hoisted above her head. Serena seemed comfortable posing in front of her big sister's lens. It made me think she's been doing it her whole life.

But when it comes down to it, it isn't really about the theatrics, or the clothing lines, or the fashion shows, or the television appearances or even the Tweeted marriage proposals (I counted 55 during Saturday's match). In the end, it's about the titles.

Serena has 11. The record is 24.

I confess I'm looking. How about you?

    I'm confused

At the end of the article you say that the record is 24, but earlier you seem to indicate that it's 18 (held by Martina and Chris Evret).  Is the 24 a typo, or has someone won that many, and if so, who/whom?  <--I never can remember which to use...in French it's the same word (qui).
    DaChickenLady's picture

I'm not sure but I think the records are...

    Martina and Chris each has 18;

    Steffi has 22; and

    Margaret Court has 24.

    StuntDouble's picture

    That's correct.

Sorry, that wording was a little weird. I changed the post to reflect all the women in front of Serena. :)
    blunt spoon's picture

    Margaret Court

Yeah, the record is held by Margaret Court who has 24 Grand Slam singles titles. She's an Australian and played throughout the sixties and seventies. Unfortunately she's severely homophobic, so it's rather difficult to like her.
    lhme65's picture

In terms of her 24 singles

In terms of her 24 singles slam titles, 11 of them were won in Australia at a time when not all of the top players bothered to go down there to play the event. So for that reason, I think there's an assumption that she may not have won quite so many had the event been regarded more highly at the time.
    Gret's picture

Yes, it is difficult to compare the number of titles

I have much more respect for Steffi Graf's 22 titles in the open era.

Though Margaret Court is one of only 3 women (incl. Steffi) to have won a Grand Slam (all 4 titles in one year) and that was in 1970, during a highly competitive time. Had Court played later, she probably still would have been in the top list of title holders, just maybe not the top one.

Pitty she is such a crazy homophobe, who has actively lobbied Parliament against gay rights in Australia, saying things like increased family rights for gay and lesbian couples would lead to greater acceptance of homosexuality.  He fav catchphrase to throw around is "Homosexuality is an abomination against the lord!"   Damn shame, she's our greatest tennis player in Australia.

    I can multi-task

I can look at many things at once ...

I'm a die hard Venus fan, but after this weekend I have to concede that Serena is the better player.

Steffi Graf has 22 Grand Slam Titles

    ughh...

as much as Serena Williams irks me, i can't deny that she's one hell of a tennis player! obviously she's talented and has proven to be a very determined and hard working athlete, coming back from injury and climbing back up the rankings ladder over the years... but OMG, her arrogance and cockiness makes it REALLY DIFFICULT for me to like her. maybe if she learned some grace and humility i'd actually be more inclined to embrace her as a top player and root for her. She should really take notes from her sister... Venus is always gracious whether it be winning or losing, and that is something i can appreciate!!

    blunt spoon's picture

    Wimbledon

The Wimbledon final was a snoozefest.  The Williams sisters are so boring when they play eachother.  But Serena's semi-final match was great.  Listeners to BBC radio were asked to send in suggestions for how Dementieva might beat her and they came up with three:

    1) Come to the net
    2) Open an Balenciaga handbag concession next to the Umpire's chair
    3) Grow extra arms like Vishnu

    Meg's picture

The only way she could beat her...

In her sleep with a large bat

It wasnt so much a boring match, Venus just completely lost her 1st serve in the second set and couldn't do much right after that.

    Melissa Hsu's picture

    Williams Sisters Snoozefest is right!

Not a fan of the style of tennis they play, i don't find it in the slightest bit entertaining, Serena's t-shirt was the highlight! Womens game aint what it used to be.  Women's doubles and mixed tho is still fun to watch.

    sade's picture

    Are you a tennis Fan

If you don't like the Williams sisters style of play than I have to guess you don't watch much tennis because this is how all the top 10 women play.  Has been this brand of tennis since the era of Steffi & Monica with the exception of Henin and Mauresmo but even they had a power games. Hingis not power.

1)Safina-power, not athletic, not able to win big matches

2)Serena-power, athletic (speed, movement), mentally tough

    3)Venus-power, athletic, mentally tough

4)Elena D-power, athletic, not able to win big matches

    5) Svetlana, Jelena, Vera, Victoria, Ana

    6)  Even Sharapova-power, mentally tough, not athletic

I could continue but that would be redundant.  So If you don't like them then you don't like the others because they all play the same way.

    Melissa Hsu's picture

Yes im a tennis fan! But.......

Ok, i am getting old, starting to sound like my dad as i find myself writing the following: Its not like it used to be, moan whinge moan, far more grace, excitement, serve and volleying, now its all baseline to baseline on and on yawn yawn!

    I don't feel the williams sisters, i find them grating, i wish i didn't.

Sorry. I did love womens tennis, but i guess i've fallen out with it a bit, but i do recall i fell out with mens tennis for years and then got back into it. I enjoyed the mens final greatly. I used to stay up into the wee small hours watching the australian open and the us open and i have always enjoyed wimbledon and as Brit, its something special.

    Top Players

I find that a lot of the women under perform. Look at Safina - ranked number one and couldn't get more than one game in the semifinals against Venus. That is what I would call deplorable and completely unacceptable. So when I hear people complain about Williams finals/matches being boring it gives me pause. Serena vs. Venus matches are 80% more interesting than many other player match-ups.

    Hear hear

I was really excited for Safina and thought she had a chance in the semi cos I thought she was doing really well this year. Sooo disappointing. I couldn't watch, it was awful.

    Ha!

I just posted a link to this article on twitter - noting it was more exciting than the final. I like to watch both Williams play, but not each other.
    .★.Matt The Rock$tar.★.'s picture

    Me too

I like to see them beat up on other people, but when it comes to one another you already know who will win. But I won't boo them like the crowds do when they play.

But, unlike the comment above, I still love watching women's tennis (even played in college) but sort of feel like the energy is a bit down when they are playing each other. They both still play very well, but it doesn't seem as exciting. I loved Serena's semi-final match, but the final...zzzzz.
    Ms. Dilly Dally's picture

    I love women's tennis

That's the only reason I am a tennis fan. The guys are skilled and everything but not nearly as exciting for me as watching the women play. Hmm, can't think of why that is ...

    Hmmm...

That is a mystery - LOL.

    Women Tennis!!!

I 2 luv watching women tennis, although I really don't care 4 Venus & Serena playing against each other.  They both are powerful players...
    woody-69's picture

    I agree with Chris Evert....

I'm sick of the ear-piercing screams from each of these sisters, and the other women players who insist on this "tactic". It's what took me away from watching Monica Seles matches long ago. It takes all the joy away from watching a high quality game of tennis. I miss the game as played by Evert, Graf and Navratilova. There seemed to be more strategy in their games. Chris Evert won those tournaments playing from the back lines for the most part. She knew angles and how to make her opponent run back and forth so much they would be sucking air at the end of their points. And when she was faced with the power of Martina, her game held up. That was women's tennis at it's finest IMO.

I wish the Williams sisters all the luck in the world. I just won't be watching them, or any of the other screamers anymore. I'll just watch the men play.

    marcia's picture

    it's a shame that

she is not the #1 player. i don't know what the williams sisters have to do to get the recognition they deserve. it like they have to win and win and win and win some more for the wtn to finally said okay we rank you as the #1 player. but that girl( what ever  her name is) win one tournament she move to #1 even the commenter were upset aout serena not being #1. But i know the real reason they are not name #1. they people wonder why black people refuse to accept that american has come around when it come to race, just because we have a black prez. But we know that people still prejudge and treat us like we are not american
    Morgan77's picture

Not to be a contrarian, BUT,

The WTA tour rankings are based on points that are accumulated throughout tournament play, with different point values associated with how well you do in the tournaments you play in. Often times players drop due to injuries, etc...but, players aren't selected to be #1, it's based on how many points they have. So, you could have a #1 that plays tons more tournaments, but perhaps doesn't win them all. Or at least the majors, but still performs well, like making it to the finals/semifinals.

I don't disagree that there are still many prejudices in this country, but I'm not sure I believe this is one of them. I do think Serena is playing the best tennis of anyone on the tour right now and if she keeps it up will definitely overtake Safina. After her Wimbledon victory, she's just under 2,000 points behind and you get that for winning a grand slam.

Just to confirm I wasn't speaking out of turn, http://www.sonyericssonwtatour.com/page/RankingsSingles/0,,12781~0~1~100,00.html

    blunt spoon's picture

    rankings etc

For me the screaming or grunting or whatever you want to call it isn't the issue.  It's the fact that the game is all about a powerful serve these days.  Nobody seems to be really interested in playing tennis anymore, certainly since Henin retired.  It's just a case of standing on the baseline and blasting your opponent out of it.  It makes for very dull watching.

    @ Meg

I laughed my ass off when I read that bat comment.  Nice one :)

    @ marcia

The rankings are decided based on a system of points which are alloted to each player based on their performance in the tournaments they participate in.  Safina is ranked #1 at the moment because, whilst she is undoubtedly not the best player in the world, she's played a very solid year.  Serena Willliams has struggled with injury this year, which has prevented her from playing as much as Safina.  And Venus hasn't played as well as she is capable of this year.  So, while I appreciate that racism is a very serious issue, it's certainly not at work in the Williams' respective rankings.

edited to add: clearly I took way too long writing that essay of a post and somebody else said it for me.  Sigh.  I'll have to work on my wpm..

    Serena

Okay, I will admit that I am not a Serena fan, never have been and I really don't think I ever will be.  I was a fan of Venus in her younger days though.

Serena's t-shirt is ridiculous, I'm sorry SD for once I have to disagree with you and she won't come close to 24.  She's notorious for spouting crap and excuses and she is a sore looser.  She has underachieved, I believe that she could have been one of the best the game has ever seen but injuries (or poor conditioning) has prevented her from that and has relied on her natural abilities instead of working with it to become a major powerhouse in the game.

Do I think she had the ability to surpass the greats like Steffi?  Damn right I do, and I was pretty worried about it in the beginning of her career because she did get in the way many times of my personal favorite Jennifer Capriati's comeback.

I love an outspoken female athlete, I think it's good for the game and good for women everywhere to have a voice.  But the shreaking and whining has never helped either.  And if she does make it close to 24, I'll say it's due to semi-weak competition in the women's game as of recently.

For the record, I also think that Venus would have more win's against her sister.  I think she's a huge competitor, but being an older sister myself, I think there have been games that she didn't play to her full potential because of her relationship with Serena.

    Ms. Dilly Dally's picture

    Race?

The WTA ranking system is based on points and tournament play for the year. Part of being a power player means more injuries. This is why Hingis was able to maintain the number one ranking for so long while she was playing. She had a low risk game (physically) and rarely got injured and therefore played incessantly, accumulating points. The power vs non-power player dynamic is an interesting one because I would think that the players with a physically taxing style of play would dwindle out and retire faster. But instead we have Hingis gone, Henin gone, Clijsters gone. I just find it funny that a lot of the Williams contemporaries have retired but they are still around, basicially carrying women's tennis on their backs at this point.

Serena would rather be No.2 with Grand Slams vs No.1 with none

Here is a quote from an ESPN article

"This obviously rankles Williams, who was a touch catty on the subject after winning at Wimbledon for the first time in six years. She was asked if she was motivated to regain her No. 1 ranking.

"I'm not super motivated," Williams said. "I think if you hold three Grand Slam titles maybe you should be No. 1, but not on the WTA Tour obviously, so … my motivation is maybe just to win another Grand Slam and stay No. 2, I guess."

Is it a disappointment not to be No. 1?

"No," she said. "If it did, I would go crazy just thinking about it. I think anyone really could. That's just shocking. But whatever. It is what it is. I'd rather definitely be No. 2 and hold three Grand Slams in the past year than be No. 1 and not have any."

This, of course, was a shot at Safina -- the same Safina who was waxed by sister Venus 6-1, 6-0 here in the semifinals. In May, Serena proclaimed herself as the true No. 1 and Safina was drawn into a chippy back and forth."

    Very brave

Safina is bigger than Serena. And she has a temper. I think Serena would be well-advised not to throw words at Safina. Lol. You know the ones that have the most to say are the wimpiest.

Can you imagine Safina and Serena in a fight??? lol

    I'd have to disagree

Serena from Compton she'd wipe the floor with ol' girl. lol. I said this in another thread but I like athletes that have attitude and egos. It's good for the game, it brings personality and makes it watchable. The games between the sisters are dull because you don't know who to root for so you just watch and wait until the end. But Serena and Venus are good for the game with their style of play you need to change the game up( literally) the same tactics won't last forever and thats for anything. As far as them having a life beyond tennis, I don't see a problem with having other interests...

    Demetieva was at match

Demetieva was at match point in that Semi match!!!

If I had been her at the end of the game having lost it, I would have just smacked my head against the locker room door until I knocked myself out. I mean, what a missed opportunity to get to the Wimbledon Final for the first time in her career!!

That semi was a rare good competative match to watch on the women's side all tournament! The rest were average to ok for me.

What about the womens doubles final

I have to admit that the womens matches were a bit boring to watch. However the Womens Doubles final between the Williams sisters and the two Ozzies Stubbs/Stosur was great. Stubbs is so animated and vocal on the court. It was brilliant.I was shouting at the TV cheering the Ozzies on. Poor Stosur got some nasty shots to the body, and I'm sure has the bruises to prove it.

I love doubles, and not just cos there are twice as many hot women on the court (although admittedly that is a big drawcard;) It's just so entertaining to watch. I didn't get to see the final but i've seen both aussie girls play doubles before and i agree they are excellent.

    Morgan77's picture

    Doubles

I actually like watching doubles more than the singles, but that's probably because I liked playing doubles more. Both the men's and women's doubles finals were great, I thought.

Doubles can be very watchable sometimes. But I was probably [conviniently] out doing something else while they were on.

    I don't see what's so wrong with Serena's attitude

so what she's "cocky" but she can back it up. Look at Laila Ali, she talked about as much trash as her father and she finished her career undefeated. Some athletes run their mouth more than others, but if they are good then you can't deny it. I like Gina Carano b/c she doesn't talk trash, and can kick butt. Like when Kelly Kobald said that she wanted to "go in and break something beautiful"Gina's response was a laugh and "she called me beautiful." At the same time I liked Ali b/c she did run her mouth and could back it up.

Talk smack just be sure to back it up.

    Danie's picture

    Serena and Venus

Agh, they're both cocky jerks. One of the first matches I ever saw Venus play, it may have even been a final. She was playing Martina Hingis (not my favorite player either). After the first game, and then on each odd game you switch sides. Well, on one of the switchovers Venus just didn't move over, she basically went out of her way to bump Hingis.

And make no mistake about it, the screaming, from all of the women, it's not done because they're expending engergy. If anyone watched the Marathon of a match between two real tennis players Andy Roddick and Roger Federer they were in like.... the equivilant of set seven or eight and not a grunt between them. The screaming (because that's what it is) is a tactic to throw your opponet off, and sure, it may not be enough against the rules that any ump enforces it, but Tennis, like golf is a gentlewoman's game. Those unwritten rules should practically be the first thing that whoever the hell is teaching you teaches you. Two people should be able to play a fair game, Without, any ump there and have it turn out with almost exactly the same score as one with an ump.

And that's my problem with the Williams sisters (and especially their father as well). As someone who's mother plays tennis, who's grandmother plays tennis, who has played tennis since she was three I know the 'unwritten rules', and as much as these two are good when it comes to strokes and serves, they suck when it comes to the human decency side of the game. You don't take strategically placed bathroom breaks, or try to bump hips with your opponent on a change over, or scream like you're being poked. You just don't.

Ah yes, I will admit, it probably also pisses me off that they're basically just cruising on their natural skills. Billy Jean King had the great quote. The ending's the important part. "if they are willing to pay the full price." Roger Federer was willing to pay the full price, same with Andy Roddick, Andre Agassi, hell, people like Conchieta Martinez, Mauresmo, or, do you know how many times Lindsey Davenport came back from injuries just to win her three grand slam titles (US, Wimbledon, Australian) or how long it took for Jana Novotna just to win her one Wimbledon.

So yeah, it's more than just arrogance, though that is the tip of their iceberg.

But, they'll keep doing what they're doing, and I'll keep skipping any and all matches that has the both of them in it. Maybe we'll get lucky and they'll be in the same bracket for the US Open. I know I'm hopin' and prayin'....

    sade's picture

    Ridiculous

Hingis was the most cocky and the most disrespectful player ever(calling Mauresmo a man before the Aus. Open final).  When did this incident occur with V and H because no one has ever writen about it that I've seen.  So you had a problem when Seles screamed her way to the top (notice how the current plays copied her).

Hingis and Jankovic are notorious for taking bathroom breaks and injury time outs not the Williams.  Let's not forget the sportsmanship of Henin who called for a timeout in the French open Quar/Semis but denied she did when pointed out by Serena or asked by the umpire (only to have her lie replayed over and over on tv).  When Henin's coach admits that against anothe opponent she would have told the truth that says it all.  Or how about the sportsmanship of the spanish tennis player this year at the French lied that the tennis ball did not hit her then her racquet (too bad once again video proof exists of her lie).

When has the sisters been accused of poor sportsmanship and lying to win a match?  If you can find it then please bring it to my attention.

Do I like the screaming no but as athletes you adjust and keep playing and as viewers I do the same.

So what is you point?  Agassi wasted a good 5 years of his career being cool.  The sisters have not done that.  As many commentators (ex. J. McEnroe) have said maybe they are aound still because they have a life outside of tennis.

You complain about an all Williams final but tell me how wongerfully exciting were those Henin/Clijsters (Boring)matches, Sharapova, any Henin final without a williams sisters, world #1 Safina.

So who would you like to see in the finals because instead of see good tennis,  you will get mentally weak, bathroom breaks, injury timeouts?  If this is what you like then I will take the Williams Sisters and a Nadal/Federer final over fed/rod any day.

For you haters, if you don't want to see and all Williams finals then have the other players step up and prevent it otherwise as the saying goes don't hate the player hat the game.

Federer and Nadal are cocky players when they step on court of course they exude confidence.  Look at fed's warm-up jacket with # of Wim. Won, or rafa with name on bag and 4 racquets for his french wins.

If being too cocky was your criteria then thats most champions (Tiger/Jordan aren't cocky LOL)

Justine Henin retires - Serena prospers. You do the math.

    Yawn!

Serena's accomplishments are noteworthy but they sure as hell need to be viewed with a lot more perspective than is being given here or elsewhere in the media.

It's no coincidence that Serena's 'rededication' to the game coincided with Justine Henin's retirement.Simple fact of the matter is while Henin was at the top, Serena won 3 majors in 5 years. Without Henin in the game, Serena has won 3 majors in 1 1/2 years. It doesn't take a genius to see the connection.Henin was a better player than Serena, had a more artful game with more dimensions to it and was capable of absorbing Serena's power and turning it back against her. Also, unlike all of the other 'top' girls apart from Venus, Justine Henin could actually move on the court. Sharapova, Safina, Ivanovic, et al can generate the power but watching them move is like watching a dinosaur dance on ice. Dementieva and Kuznetsova can move but one has the world's least reliable serve and the other has a dodgy temperament.

Quite simply, what we're seeing in women's tennis today is one of the most slickly marketed but weakest eras in the last thirty years in the game's history. The best player has retired and the second best is so much better than the rest of the pack it's laughable.

Justne Henin Retires - Serena Prospers

So how do you explain the total beat down Serena put on Henin the last time they played?? I am really amazed at the thinly veiled racist comments on this board....Blacks are not allowed to be confident lest they be accused of being arrogant, cocky or uppity.

An article came out today talking about the racism in tennis

    http://www.womentalksports.com/items/view/34359

"Before I sat down to write this post I was talking to my mother-in-law about it. She was surprised, but then she brought up how beautiful and athletic the William’s sisters were.  I said “Yes, and they are also relegated to the second court because they aren’t blonde haired and blue eyed.”

So here are two beautiful superstars. Venus and Serena Williams faced each other last year in the Wimbledon finals and they will do so again. Yet Serena’s match took a back seat to “The Battle of the Babes”. And why?

    Megan has a guess.

This is wrong it so many ways, where do I start?  First of all, that
definition of attractiveness is the white, male All England Club’s
definition.  Venus and Serena Williams are some of the most gorgeous
ladies out on the court.  But see, this is about being blonde and
leggy.  If you’re not blonde and leggy, you’re not attractive.  Never
    have been, never will be….

    - Megan’s Minute

    and so does Diane.

In other words, it came as no surprise to me at all to read about the
Centre Court selections; I find this news to be part and parcel of the
sexist culture of my nation and other nations that produce tennis
players, as well as the sexist culture of sports in general. As ugly as
the sexism is, however, there is more than sexism in play in these
selections. The “babes” selected to play on Centre Court–except in
situations in which the selections are default–like the “babes”
selected as the tour’s hottest women on the Australian Open website,
have one thing in common–their skin color. Serena Williams is not a
babe. Li Na is not a babe. There are a lot of people, incidentally, who
think these two women are beautiful, but they do not qualify for “babe”
status. And while I realize that consideration of beauty is very
subjective, it is hardly a coincidence that African American and Asian
women do not ever appear on the list. The world’s most beautiful
lesbian could be on the tour, too, and–if she were out–you can be
assured she would not be on the list, either.

The Williams are good for the sport

Those links of the ratings is a perfect example of how they are good for the sport by turning casual viewers into potential fans. Similar to how Tiger helps ratings for golf, Lance helped ratings for his sport, Candace helps ratings for womens basketball, Lebron and Kobe help ratings for the NBA, Brock Lesanar and Gina Carano help boost ratings for MMA, etc. Love them or hate them these people are good for the sport b/c they up the ratings, which means more money, etc, etc, etc.

    Pah. Serena has a nice

Pah. Serena has a nice smile and strong arms. Her game is far from beautiful. I don't care about her titles or her fashion. Her game is like German soccer. Effective, yes, but not ellegant.

Ana Ivanovic is pretty though. (ye, I know, her game is weak)

Roger won against a very strong Roddick. That's really more important. He is fashion-crazy and has a beautiful game. And oh boy, Nike made him look really ugly this year..

    Gentlewoman's game

...to comment on that, the sisters are good for the game in the sense that they learned "street ball" and not this "gentlewoman's" game and that you could learn and not have to attend all the clinics and camps and stuff to be great. Although they did attend those things thats not where they started. Particularly for blacks it seems that they have the most success by learning the game and teaching it to their kids who have a bit of a knack for the sport.Thats an inspiration in itself.

It would be inaccurate to say Serena would be more likeable if she just shut the hell up.  That implies she's likeable in the first place.  Her arrogance doesn't bother me - she certainly can back it up - but she's rude and insulting.  Really, what would her god jehovah think about all the shit talking she does? I cannot stand her.
