It's time for a superheroineYesterday, Jezebel declared that it is time for a really good female superhero flick. I agree; it has been time for a really good female superhero flick. Too bad the folks who made Catwoman, Elektra and all the X-Men movies missed the part about how it needs to be good. Look, it's hard out there for a comic book superheroine — just ask Batgirl (paralyzed); Star Sapphire (possessed); Dart (crippled); Enchantress (de-powered); Laurel Kent (robot); Mockingbird (abducted); or Batwoman, Gwen Stacy, Hellcat, Black Canary and Ice (dead, dead, dead, dead, dead). They over-sexualize you, they under-sexualize you. They give you powers, they take them away. They give you a girlfriend and then split you up so you can fight one another over the affection of the psychotic criminal in a clown suit. Here's my advice on how to add a really good superheroine to the current stream of hero blockbusters: 1) No A-List stunt-casting.
Alicia Silverstone as Batgirl and Uma Thurman as Poison Ivy very nearly ruined Batman for the world. In Chris Nolan's re-imagined Batman, he didn't cast unknowns, but he didn't cast Arnold Schwarzenegger, either. I love Angelina Jolie as much as the next lesbo, but her lips would ruin Catwoman (who needs to be able to be disguised by a mask). There are plenty of talented lesser-known actresses out there. Find one. 2) Give the women a little character to go along with their superpowers.
The problem with the women heroes of the X-Men movies is that they were boring. You've got Anna Paquin, Famke Janssen and Halle Berry and hundreds of millions of dollars in production money. How come the only scene I remember in three movies is when Janssen goes evil and blows up her boyfriend? 3) Let the women do more than shriek.
Terry Moore, of Strangers in Paradise fame, now writes Marvel's Spider-Man Loves Mary Jane series, but it is nearly impossible to convince someone to read it because Kirsten Dunst is so lame as Mary Jane in the Spider-Man movies. She spends half her time not moving her face muscles and half her time screeching for help. If I had powers, there's a real chance I wouldn't save her because I wouldn't be able to handle the hollering. 4) Being sexy doesn't make a woman a villain.
From Michelle Pfeiffer's Catwoman in 1992's Batman Returns to the women in this year's Christmas release, The Spirit, the pattern goes like this: dowdy secretaries who don't want to sleep with you are totally trustworthy. The moment they don some spandex and lipstick, watch your back! You can't trust a woman with a healthy sexual appetite. It's ridiculous and misogynistic and we're over it. 5) Give us Wonder Woman and do it now.
The Wonder Woman movie has been on-again-off-again for the last decade. There was a lame attempt at a full-length cartoon, but it went straight to DVD, and rightly so. Wonder Woman is the most famous superheroine ever. She smart and sexy and strong (you know, practically a lesbian), and there is plenty of previous material to draw from. Stop making excuses and bring Wonder Woman to my movie screen immediately. Are you ready for a female superhero film? What hero would you like to see and what actress would you like to see portray her? Submitted by on January 7, 2009 - 4:00pm. |

Good catch!
Casting
When it comes to casting Wonder Woman, the studios will want to sign them for a three picture deal which means, realistically, they'll be looking for someone who is no older than late-20s. Are there any Hollywood actresses in that range who aren't too thin for the role? I mean, physically Catherine Zeta Jones would've been perfect 10 years ago, and Lucy Lawless 15 years ago but, from a *realistic* casting pov, who is there now?
And as beautiful as Halle Berry is, she was totally wrong for Storm who is supposed to be tall and regal, not short and perky. I love Halle, but she can't do regal. When an X-Men movie was first mooted many years ago, Iman was up for the role. Don't know how good an actress she is/was, but *there's* a woman who could do regal.
Jessica Biel or Megan Fox
Jessica Biel or Megan Fox will do nicely.

Seriously?
Seriously? You really don't think that there are any actresses in their twenties who could do Wonder Woman? Just off the top of my head I can think of several.
Megan Fox
Jordana Brewster
Rosario Dawson
Evangeline Lily
Olivia Wilde
Leighton Meester (maybe in a few years?)
She doesn't quite fit the
She doesn't quite fit the "no older than late-20s" requirement, but what about Lena Headey? I haven't seen "300" (something about lot's of overly buff guys wearing hardly anything that didn't seem appealing, although from what I've seen she doesn't wear much either, so maybe it's worth it. But I digress, forgive me.), but what little I have seen she seems to be able to match Gerard Butler not only in looks but in attitude and toughness. "Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles" shows she can handle the action and tussle with the boys.
She's less than A-list but bigger then unknown, with solid roles in solid movies (very little fluff) to her credit. This is semi-essential to any sort of critical success. An A-lister would be too "flashy"; a casting stunt as this article accurately addresses. This would certainly draw in an audience familiar with the star, but hardcore Wonder Woman fans would probably leave unsatisfied. An unknown actor could have the opposite consequences. While the devoted may find their "Buddha", anyone who doesn't know much about Wonder Woman, like myself I admit it, might not want to risk going to see an unknown.
Part of what made the recent "Dark Knight" (Another character I was not very familiar with) appealing to me was Heath Ledger and Christian Bale. I respected Heath Ledger who was not quite yet an A-lister, though certainly headed that direction. And Christian Bale was a NAME I had heard but not an actor I had ever seen. Their lack of extreme notoriety coupled with the lack of extreme obscurism was a risk I was willing to take.
Then again I'm a fan of Lena Headey's acting therefore perhaps I'm just jaded.
P.S. I've noticed other posts referring to Cobie Smulders. I like her and she fits the age range better. My only viewership of her is "How I Met Your Mother" and that being a comedy I have a little trouble seeing past the "Robin Sparkles." But she is the female Barney of the show with the cigar smoking, laser tag, and never ever marrying attitude. While my first choice would still be Lena, Cobie is a close second. I just have less evidence to support my "outrageous"(and lengthy) opinions.

missy peregrym...
...dammit everytime this comes up
missy peregrym.....
i would also accept a michelle rodriguez (ignoring the written type of WW)
Couple of (geeky) things...
Patsy Walker, Hellcat? She's not dead (at the moment). She's currently starring in a completely deranged, but also gorgeous and awesome, mini-series. Definitely worth checking out. And Mockingbird should be dead, since there's no way to reconcile her post-death appearances with "no, wait, she's a Skrull!" and have it make any temporal or logical sense... but whatever, she's back now and moping around with her mopey husband (widower?)... man, Marvel drives me crazy.
Black Canary I is dead, but Black Canary II is alive and well and leading the JLA. And unless I missed something, the Kate Kane Batwoman (the lesbian one) isn't dead either. She was stabbed in the chest in 52, but sometimes-girlfriend Renee Montoya stopped the bleeding in time.
I'm still clinging to my high hopes for the animated Wonder Woman DVD coming out in February. Weird casting for some roles (Keri Russell as Diana? Really), but the character designs are excellent.
Death, death, death.
Wise choice, really, 'cause
Jean Grey
Batwoman...
....is actually the new face of detective comics....SPOILERS
batman is 'dead' and she's the one who's taken over....there's only been one book (that i know of perhaps the other is on the way) but she's leading detective comics starting with #854...
Mmmmm
Me too
And I also remember the scene where she jumps on Wolverine very clearly. And most of the others, actually...
Moving right along, as for Catwoman, god, that was a travesty. Even if a woman were to exploit her sexuality in such an obvious way, she wouldn't need to be such a bitch (and I use the term with all of its connotations). It was just so sexist - sex and irrationality and moodswings. Just what women are all about.
Runaways
I would love to see a Runaways movie (there were rumors, I think) The comic book has great female characters and I love the story line...
mmm... I'm even seeing Blake Lively as Karolina Dean... yum
It's not just rumors --
It's not just rumors -- it's actually getting made, with a tentative release date for 2011.
Personally I'm hoping for all unknowns when it comes to the Runaways themselves. Maybe it's just because I'm so worried they'll get Karolina (who is very much my favorite) wrong. I can't see any current actress doing her justice.
Hooray for Runaways!
A Runaways film would be awesome! I'd love to see Nico, Karolina, and Alex on screen. I agree with you that I'm hoping for all unknowns; a comic like that should give some new faces a break, especially the kids of color.
But isn't there a film called Runaways being made that's about a band? Every time I've seen something about it's been the band one, so I thought I was just dreaming about the comic being adapted. Keeping my fingers crossed!
Every
single time i see news on this site about 'runaways' my first thought is always the comic, not the joan jett flick....
does that make me a geek?

Actress for Wonder Woman!!!
I don't know why I was thinking about this the other day, about who would be good doing Wonder Woman (think I read something about Beyonce wanting to and I almost barfed at the thought...seriously, the woman can't act to save her life, but that's another story) and then the idea came to me as clear as day! Someone who is hot enough to melt the paint off the walls, has a full womanly divine body and that perfect face and can pull off feisty....and on top has a killer smile and that 'je ne sais quoi' of all american look with a hint of multicultural spice.....puuuuurrfeect!!!
None other than delicious Sarah Shahi!!!!!!!
Seriously, who can pull off costumes like this, it's like she's already practicing, haha
Sarah as Wonder Woman...she can save me any day!!!!! yooowww... :D
pics don't work...
why are my images coming out so small :(
Sigh...too bad we can't ever get a Xena film
Jennifer Beals & Laurel Holloman for new XENA and sidekick
Heck yes! Jessica Biel or Megan Fox
Terry Moore now draws "ECHO" as well
The main character is called Julie. While taking photographs is in the desert, she's witness to some kind of an explosion. In the event she (as well as her pick up truck) gets covered in some semi-organic metal stuff.
In the first couple of volumes it looks like the metal stuff has some kind of memory or conscience, and protects Julie. Kinda like the Witchblade protects Sara Pezzini... Anyhoo, Echo is ongoing, but it would be interesting (I think) to see that turned into a movie *g*

"Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter, and those who matter don't mind." (Dr. Seuss)
I respectfully disagree ...
With your impression of the X-men movies. The entire plot of X-men was based around Rogue's (sweet, angsty Rogue) powers. A little "damsel in distress" for my liking but hey, she was young.
X2 had Storm's crisis of faith and one of Halle Berry's better performances in a long time. The whole part where she challenges and ultimately believes in Nightcrawler...:P
X3 blergh... but brought Ellen Page to my notice.
So right you are! Though I
So right you are! Though I really hated their Rogue it later lead to the ruin of Rogue in the comic books which is so sad she was my fav x-character.

have you wondered...
... what it is that makes most films center around a male superhero character no matter that there are many female ones out there?
let's take HANCOCK. besides the name, what would it have changed if Charlize had been in the lead as the superhero with Will as her second? it wasn't based on anything already existing.
or why not have centered an X-MEN sequel around Jean Grey's character instead of just a few scenes to flesh out the guys?
maybe give CATWOMAN a movie where she comes off more as a superhero then a porn star.
my industry experience says it still comes down to the dollar - and what pics are on that currency - men - and who controls it in hollywood - men again - and who are the #1 comic book buyers - yep, you guessed it - and just for fun, who writes more of the comics that create these heroes?
but i'm holding out hope for WONDER WOMAN - and that producer joel silver wil get his head out of his own butt and re-hire joss whedon to make the movie already.
My favorite superheroine
My favorite superheroine type was Buffy. She started out seeming a little more ditzy, then just got smarter and stronger as time went on. Plus she had a great female sidekick in Willow.
Anyway, I think it would be totally awesome if they would start making superheroine flicks. The only reason I wouldn't have gone to see something like Catwoman was because they do oversexualize things and I would like to see a female superhero with substance and not just one wearing tight clothes. The thing is that I think there's a definite market out there (look how good Buffy did on television, and Charmed and other shows with strong female leads with special powers.) The market's just not being tapped enough. As for which superheroine, I'm not sure. Hey, why do they even have to use an existing one? They could just as easily create a new one, as long as they actually gave us a smart, strong woman to save the world.
wonder woman, joss style!
rumor has it joss whedon totally wanted cobie smulders for a wonder woman movie. which would have been absolutely awesome. (actually, on second thought, id take sarah shahi, too! it's time for an ethnic superhero!!)
why is it that Joss (and maybe JJ abrams) are two of the only dudes in hollywood getting women right?? take notes, ppl!

COBIE SMULDERS?!!?!
COBIE SMULDERS?!!?! YUMMY!!!!!!
She's be good, I'd love to see her do badass.
Also love to see her in that costume...
yes!
Oh, hell yeah!
You know, besides Lawless, I can totally see Cobie Smulders as Diana. Just dye her hair black and we got her!
One of the best suggestions I've ever heard! :)

Wonder Woman DVD
"There was a lame attempt at a full-length cartoon, but it went straight to DVD, and rightly so."
Are you talking about the DC Universe Wonder Woman DVD Movie? Because if so, it was never meant to be an "movie theater" release just a straight to DVD movie like Superman Doomsday and Justice League: New Frontier (which shows a very kick ass Wonder Woman putting Superman in his place, politically speaking.) All these DVDs are aimed at a more mature audience, so expect more blood and sexual situations.
This will be the first DVD release from DC with a lead female character and probably the only Wonder Woman movie we'll have in the foreseeable future. The trailer looks kick ass! The character design is beautiful! And Gail Simone helped and approved of the script!
By the way Gail Simone is the current Wonder Woman writer and the first female to write Wonder Woman for more than a couple of issues :)

I keep seeing her name come up and....
That's so *gay*
... if you don't like the word "gay" being used as an insult, don't use "tranny" the same way.
KTHXBAI
Agreed on both cases, Megan
Wonder Woman
I agree that Megan Fox should NOT be Wonder Woman or any other superheroine.
I love the cheesy 70's Wonder Woman with Lynda Carter. I have all 3 seasons on DVD- I know I am a dork. I am tired of hearing rumors about a movie and then NOTHING.
Jordana Brewster would make a great Wonder Woman! Or Kate Beckinsale, Eliza Dushku, Jessica Biel, Rosario Dawson, even Angelina.
I loved Michelle Pfeiffer as Catwoman. Halle Barry had potential in Catwoman, but the movie was awful.
Megan Gale
there is a rumored justice league movie in the works for 2011...it has been off again on again...but they have megan gale tentatively cast as wonder woman...
Megan Gale!!
