Is Tina Fey stealing from Kermit the Frog?

It's that time again, kiddies: Pop Quiz Friday!

Question: What do these two pictures have in common?

Answer: According to writer Bryan Lynch, everything.

This week Lynch posited a hypothesis that our beloved Tina Fey ripped-off her critically-acclaimed 30 Rock from Jim Henson's Muppet Show. You can pshaw! and pfft! all you want, but you should at least take a look at the evidence:

Liz Lemon vs. Kermit the Frog

Both are the most normal characters on their respective shows. Both are unlucky at love. Both are neurotic worrywarts and type-a personalities who slow burn into a crazy breakdown once per episode. AND both have some kind of flirtation with the guest stars that ultimately goes nowhere.

Jenna Maroney vs. Miss Piggy

Blonde and beautiful ... but possessing, to put it politely, questionable talent. Both characters' vanity and desire to be the star of the show leads them to connive and backstab...which usually winds up making them the butt of the joke.

Kenneth the Page vs. Scooter

Kenneth is a naive, earnest page who runs around the set trying to put out fires and make everyone happy. Scooter, on the other hand, is a naive, earnest GO-FER who runs around the set trying to put out fires and make everyone happy. Totally different.

That's just a sample of the case Lynch makes against 30 Rock. He's got every cast member pegged for a Muppet; he's dissected the premise of both shows; and he's even documented what he believes are 30 Rock's very own confessions of guilt.

I guess if the theory is true, it explains the way Kenneth sees the world. In "Apollo, Apollo" he sees a Jack Muppet performing a musical theater number for him.

And then, of course, the Tracy and Liz Muppets.

Take a look at Lynch's full theory and let us know what you think.

    The most sensational...

Inspirational, celebrational, Muppetational, this is what we call... 30 Rock.

Hm.  Doesn't have the same ring to it.

    haha I read that article

haha I read that article last night before going to bed. Tina Fey is one of my google alerts.. and that came up last night. Other than iraq war, darfur & gay marriage.. tina fey news is very, very important to me lol. I'm still waiting for the day I get an article link that says "Tina Fey comes out as lesbian."

But yea i read that and laughed. It does fit the characters, but you can really fit those characters with a lot of shows. And even if the show was dirivitive of the muppets... I tip my hat off to creating 30 rock over a freaking muppet show!

After watching those clips, I have to watch some 30 Rock now.

    Whoa, whoa, whoa...

"I tip my hat off to creating 30 rock over a freaking muppet show"

Are you implying that The Muppet Show wasn't genius?  :O

    i think hte muppet show

i think hte muppet show sucks ot be quite honest. 30 rock is one of the most under rated shows. IT is pure genius. i really doubt the gorgeous and talented Tina Fey would create a show over the muppets. it's obvious it came from SNL, i mean she's writing about what she used to do on that show.
    moony's picture

    Welllll....

I don't think 30 Rock is underrated at all.  It's been celebrated by fans and critics alike, and rightly so.  Also, I think it's obvious that Bryan Lynch's comparison was tongue in cheek in the first place.  I doubt he honestly believes Tina Fey is literally ripping off The Muppet Show. It's funny to me that anyone would take his blog post seriously and rush to Tina's defense as though he was genuinely attacking her creativity!

And as for the quality of The Muppet Show, I couldn't disagree more. I would venture to guess that Tina Fey would disagree with you, as well.

Not to cause trouble on a post that should be all about fun, but hey.. my loyalty to Kermit and the gang runs deep.

    WOW

This really annoys me. It seems like a hard working, successful woman still can not catch a break these days. So it's okay to remake Beverly Hills 90210, and Melrose Place, but it's not okay for Tina to use ideas from another show? How many CSI shows are there? How many medical dramas are there? And don't even get me started on what a total RIP OFF the Twilight storyline is from Buffy. A human falling for a vampire? Hmm..I'm pretty sure Joss Whedon did that WAY better with Angel and Buffy, as well as Spike and Buffy. Charmed used to rip off entire story lines from Xena and Buffy as well! The problem is, it's 2009. It is almost impossible to come up with totally new ideas. So I say, who cares if Tina used The Muppets as inspiration? It's more of a compliment than anything! 30 Rock is still a work of genious in my mind.

    meh

I don't care much for 30 Rock (long-time muppets fan though, hahaha)...But I absolutely love Jane Krakowski. I've been watching Ally McBeal and she's so fantastic in it.

so i just thought this was frickin' hilarious!!!

    Homage, not rip-off.

I don’t think that Tina Fey would disagree with Lynch’s argument. She and the other “30 Rock” writers have been influenced by the Muppets, as have many contemporary writers and performers (see “Smile Time,” a fifth season episode of Joss Whedon’s “Angel,” or the 2003 Broadway musical “Avenue Q”).

I wouldn’t necessarily call “30 Rock” a rip-off, though. An homage, perhaps. And I think that saying Fey is simply ripping off “The Muppet Show” discounts her nine year stint with “Saturday Night Live,” which clearly informed the setting and characters of her sitcom.

Besides, since Lynch’s profile states that he is a screenwriter and comic writer, I think we can all agree that he’s making a joke when he suggests that “30 Rock” is a 100% rip-off of “The Muppet Show” and that Fey should be ashamed of herself. Maybe he’s even trying to catch Fey’s attention in hopes of getting a job.

    30 Rock

IS a pretty funny show... never thought about it in similarity to Jim Henson's Muppet Show.
    Brutal_Romance's picture

    well

the article did make me laugh but seriously, arent all shows similiar in one way or another by having the same personality combinations that all the characters share.

dont you notice the prescense of  distinct molded characters that almost appear in every movie, can we call them all a rip-off of each other.

but if 30 Rock was really being done in immitation of The Muppet Show then my hat's off for them, both shows are great and its good to revive The Muppet Show somehow.

the word 'rip-off' was a little too much, but then again he probably did it to get readers which he is already getting by now.

    ay!

    Kermit is the shidd! :P

    desthelez's picture

    srsly?

i think they may use a storyline every now and again, but not the entire show.

plus, the muppets were ok. avenue q? wayyy betterr.

love and lust make fools of us all, but where would we be without them?

    moony's picture

    No, not seriously.

Bryan Lynch was being tongue in cheek.  No one truly believes Tina Fey is literally ripping off The Muppets.

Clearly, though, I take my Muppets far too seriously.  All the Muppet disrespect!  I can't take it.  lol..

    If you're gonna compare The

If you're gonna compare The Muppet Show to 30 Rock, then at least make it Alec Baldwin vs. Kermit the Frog! Or am I the only one who sees any resemblance?

Truthfully, hard to call it a copy

The Muppet Show was a variety show that was supposed to be run by muppets for humans.  TGS is also a variety show.  There aren't a lot of archetypes besides writer, producer or actor in these kinds of shows, and its pretty neat that there are any parallels whatsoever.

What really justifies my opinion that its not a copy is that Brian Lynch had to pick three or four characters for Jack Donaghy. At that point, even if Tina Fey was copying, she'd have to work her ass off to write a composite character.  And writing composite characters is what a lot of writers do (oh, fanfiction, like the latest Star Trek movie) legally.

Isn't this the same Bryan Lynch who edits/writes the Angel comic for IDW? Just curious. This is a bit more clever than anything the comic displays, that's for sure. But, not that clever that he didn't swallow the worm and experience a flash of brilliance before Morpheus clubbed him with an axe.
