"Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" gets magic and romance rightHarry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince is the most frenetic of J.K. Rowling's seven novels, splitting its time between madcap romantic hijinks, time-traveling exposition and dark action sequences for almost 700 pages. It is rife with urgency, yet it is only one of two Potters in which the Dark Lord Voldemort does not make an appearance.
The task of creating a seamless film from the penultimate Potter seemed an impossible task, but screenwriter Steve Kloves and director David Yates weaved through the romance, humor, back story, action and angst of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince like all-star Quidditch Chasers — and in doing so created the best Potter adaptation to date. The real magic of the sixth film is that it feels both familiar and shockingly fresh.
The familiarity, of course, comes from the stellar cast whose willingness to stay together for eight movies is, frankly, something that may never be repeated. Emma Watson, Dan Radcliffe, Rupert Grint and Bonnie Wright's performances were epically more mature in Half-Blood Prince than films past. Emma Watson's offering, in particular, was almost as nuanced as her more seasoned adult co-stars. Very much like the books, Watson is the harmony that holds the entire story together. Her looks of longing and loathing — sometimes in the same scene — at Grint's Ron Weasley are heart-wrenching and hilarious. Of course, Britain's best adults were as spot-on as ever. Helena Bonham-Carter's Bellatrix Lestrange is sadistic perfection. ("I killed Sirius Black! I killed Siruis Black!") And Maggie Smith's Professor McGonagall is as stern and maternal as ever. ("Why is it that whenever anything happens, it is always you three?")
The freshness of this installment comes down to new cinematographer Bruno Delbonnel. His vision for Half-Blood Prince is more lush, textured and layered than any of the previous films. From the opening descent upon Trafalgar Square to the final shot of the trio looking out over the Hogwarts grounds, Delbonnel's work is stunning. I would be remiss not to also mention the returning Evana Lynch who plays eccentric Luna Lovegood with grace and charm, and the newest addition to the cast, Jessie Cave, whose heartsickness over Ron is the source of half the movie's glee, and one count of violent canary attack.
There is a moment near the beginning of movie where Dumbledore repairs the interior of a vandalized Muggle home with the wave of his wand. As books zoom back onto shelves, upholstery stitches itself back together, and shards of crystal fly through the air to repair a broken chandelier, the look of wonder on Harry's face seems incongruent. How long has he attended Hogwarts now? Long enough to see thousands of spells — many of them more magnificent than simple household chores. Yet there are moments, after all these years, that even Harry Potter finds himself delighted by his wondrous world. If it still happens to The Chosen One, who can blame us mere Muggles for getting caught up in the magic? Have you seen Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince yet? What did you think? I saw it yesterday
It was not my favorite, but not my least favorite. It had far more laughs that previous installments, and not a dry eye in the theatre at the end. There was very little special effects, but when they were there, boy did you know it!
My only complaint was it was not completely to the book in some glaring ways, and I really don't think they did the book justice at all.
It was a good movie worth seeing, but if you're a Potter fan, you're going to immediately notcie the incongruencies in the story.
Side note: yes, Emma's performance was MUCH better! Her eyebrows did not fly off her face and her chest heaved much less. Good on her. XD

Wha...? Very little special effects...? Did you see the same movie as I did?! The HP I saw had only one or two scenes which were not green screened/enhanced by SFX...
That said, I think the movie RAWKED. It was mature, deep, dark and finally wrapped up some story lines. Great acting across the board, good story balance and amazing cinematography.

I saw it yesterday morning and I loved it. It was visually stunning, very dark (both figuratively and literally) and the score was fantastic.
Evana Lynch and Alan Rickman were highlights for me, the latter always being a delight to watch.

I LOVED IT
I believe is the best yet, it has way more information from the actual book than the rest, only a couple of scenes new that replaced the book. I disagree with people that say that it didnt stay thruth to the book, ALL Of the movies havent stayed thruth to the book because there is no way they are going to be able to afford to do it exactly as such, it would be a 5 hour movie if they did!
I am HUGE harry potter nerd and i was pleased, even though the changes were abvious it makes sense for the final movie. We all know they can fit EVERYTHING into the actual book story.
Surprisingly
Eh...
I liked it, but
A lot of stuff was missing from the book, which made it very confusing in parts if you hadn't read the book. Things seemed to happen out of nowhere which were explained in the book but that explanation was missed out in the film. For example when Harry all of a sudden started going to Dumbledore for lessons it was never mentioned in the film he just turned up. Also there was no real explanation of the Slug Club, the scene in the train had been cut. Along with the memory of the Gaunts which took out the importance of the ring horcrux, which was replaced with the kinda random Death Eater scene at the Burrow (what's gonna happen for the first part of the next film now if the Burrow was burned down??) And Dumbledore's funeral was cut, which in my opinion would have made a nicer ending.
HOWEVER, I enjoyed it. It was very funny, hilarious in some parts! Very moving too, the ending was so sad! I loved it, and now I can't wait for the next two!
Helena Bonham Carter is a genius, Bellatrix is definatley one of my favourites! And Alan Rickman. Emma Watson was brilliant, she broke my heart in her crying scene. Evanna Lynch is brilliant, I love Luna and her eccentricity so much, she's hilarious! Especially when she had the lion on her head LOL!
I thought it was great :) one of my favourites, I really recommend going to see it! I'm going to see it again tomorrow, can't wait :D
dito
Exactly what I thought!!
Just wanted to add... how about including the freaking Hogwarts fight?!?!?!?! And what´s up with burning up the Burrow?!
Other than that it was pretty good, it looked really dark and the effects where pretty cool. Alan Rickman, Maggie Smith and Helena Bonham-Carter steal every scene.
absolutly loved it going to
absolutly loved it going to see it a second time saturaday with my cousins cried at the end and i never cry loved dumbledore but my favourate is hagrid tho

it was so-so
Meh. I'm on the fence. I
Meh. I'm on the fence. I liked it but thought it was a bit off structurally. Didn't like how they made Snape obviously sympathetic - the point of the book was you didn't know whose side he was on. Also thought it was odd to insert two action scenes (Bridge attack & Weasley house) but take out the only real action scene from the book at the end.
Bella continues to be made of win, and I thought the romance stuff was handled well.
I think OotP is the best film, and I firmly believe it's because Kloves didn't write the script. I don't rate him at all.
www.myspace.com/stopstartstall - acousticy music type stuff.
Better than I expected, but...
But I agree about the action scenes completely. It was very odd that the ending scene, where the role of the DA foreshadows the last book is so key, got cut and they added superflous action scenes. & I was disappointed that they cut the opening scene of this book, it's hilarious and my favorite! The bridge scene was actually longer than what it could have taken to show "the other minister".
I feel that people talk of how much "time" it would take to be true to the book ( like a 5-6 hr movie to do so) but its not exactly true. Some scenes can be cut and re-envisioned but when other scenes to "blockbusterize" a movie is added in lieu of other scenes, I just have to disagree. The weasley house attack made no sense, diverted so far from the storyline, and was quite long. Stuff that is important to the harmony of the storytelling was left out and this replaced that. The plot of the 6th book was made up of understanding Tom Riddle/ Voldemort so that in the 7th book Harry could defeat him. The movie lost that completely. Which means the next two movies are not set-up to reflect the books as well as they should have been.
Even still, I think this is one of the better movies, and of the same caliber as movie 1 & 2.
Totally agree
I'm a nerd, so I saw the midnight showing of HBP and I definitely agree that it's the best HP movie to date.
I loved how much time and effor they seemed to put into developing the relationships between the characters. I was expecting the Ginny/Harry pairing to feel forced and awkward, but I thought it was done quite well. It felt very natural and believable (and quite adorable if you ask me). The same with the development of Ron and Hermione's relationship.
The performances were without question soo much better than in any of the other movies.
The only thing I didn't like was how some of the major scenes from the book were either severly understated or completely ommited. I mean, I understand that when making a book of this length into a movie of course there are things that need to be left out, but it almost seemed like after a while the writers realized they were running out of time so they slapped a couple of short scenes together and then ended it.
I could go on and on about this so I'll end it here. Overall I was very happy with this movie, I'll definitely be seeing it again in theaters!
It was fantastic!
Some bits and pieces I liked from the book were missing, like the fight scene at the end =/, but that will only make the final battle even more exciting i guess =/. Best acting, directing, over all damn good ^_^!
As one of those fans who
As one of those fans who will be thinking about this flim for months, and will see it more than once no matter what, I wasn't upset by it. Alot of people worry when the films move away from the books, but I like it better when they do. It means that you can't compare the books to the movies too much, and I like keeping them apart to a certian extent.
Because I went on the first night, I got to see how a large audiance would react all at once, and they seemed to really like it. They laughed, wolf whistled and half lept out of their seats in fear at all the right places. I thought it moved very smoothly; and I liked how Weasleys Wizard Wheezes was so bright in comparison to any part that involved Draco. 8 and a bit out of 10.

i saw it the night it came out and all i can say is, i heart hermione granger :)
"all hands on deck granger!" ahhh i just love her.
TOO MUCH romance and
"She was born to play Bellatrix Lestrange"
Couldn't have said it any better, totally agree!! She is absolutely fantastic as Bellatrix! One of my favourite characters, she's insane and I love her!

I live in jamaica nd unfortunately i haven't seen it as yet cuz itz nt out in theatres as yet =( bt i'm sure it'll b great!!! =D u guys r rlly lucky tho....i rlly rlly wonna c this movies nd it kills me that its released nd i haven't seen it yet =(
I saw it first thing Thursday!
I'd been reading as many reviews and "spoilers" as I could, so I wouldn't be surprised or annoyed by the bits they cut out of the book. And it was worth it! I think this movie is probably the best so far, in terms of direction, acting and adapted screenplay. My only grouse is that Hermione still gets way more face time than Ron - something that irks me since in the books clearly Ron is Harry's best friend - but at least Ron actually showed up most of the time, which is way more than can be said for the previous movies. And at least there wasn't huge emphasis on Hermione-Sue this time round. Emma Watson's and Dan Radcliffe's acting has improved hugely, no more mad eyebrows and over-acting! I admit I have a soft spot for Rupert Grint, but he HAS always been the best actor out of the three of them. Definitely best movie so far. I can't wait to see it again!
the cinematography was
and i thought the sectumsempra part would've been more graphic. i guess that's why the movie got only a PG rating.
the comedy was great. watching the midnight show with people that had actually read the book was awesome because the crowd just seemed so connected to the movie. i wanted to cry when dumbledore died (okay a few tears came out)...but it was because i was too busy listening to my friend cry her heart out and didn't know whether i should've laughed at her or cried at the movie. overall, i thought it was cool.
Loved it!
This was the first HP movie that I can actually say that I really liked. Yes, it deviated from the book, but it did so in a way that added extra humor and some great little scenes. Usually, that annoys me, because they could have filled the time with actual book lines, but I think it fit really well with the overall mood. Plus, I've been rereading the book the last two days, and it really is a lot of overview and exposition and not much action. Rowling's writing is still interesting, but scenes copied word for word wouldn't have made that great of a movie.
I didn't have such a great experience watching it though. Forty minutes into the midnight showing I went to, the fire alarm went off and they couldn't play the rest of the movie. Worst. Timing. Ever.
this was my favorite of them
Actually,
I'm surprised that it got a 'PG' rating. The movie was scary. Especially the part with the underwater bodies in the cave. *shiver*
Don't get me wrong, I'm pleased- I was expecting it to be super toned down with the PG rating.
agreed
My Favorite (SPOILERS)
By now I've expected to be disappointed, I've expected things to be missing and I'm usually pleasantly surprised when something IS like that book. I guess you can say I'm a pessimist, I set myself up for disappointment. That being said, this movie surprised me quite a few times! I think they did the best they could the the time frame they have to squeeze the story into.
I few things could've been better, they should've included more of the ATTACK when the Death Eaters came into Hogwarts. It's supposed to be a horrifying feeling that Hogwarts is under attack, but they just kinda walked in, did the deed, and Bellatrix vandalized the place. It could've been a bit more scary. There were a few freaking creepy parts though!!!
I thought the effects were incredible. I kept remembering the first two movies the the Troll scene that looked like it was made of rubber...and I realized how far they've come! Truly breathtaking visually.
Luna was way more hilarious in this one, and tbe gorgeous Helena Bonham Carter nailed it AGAIN.
I'd actually WANT to watch this one multiple times, which is rare.

I really really liked
I really really liked this movie, which is extremely rare for me in a HP movie. Maybe it was because I finally understood that they HAD to cut out many things to make it a decent movie, and I was prepared for that. But maybe this time they did cut out things, but they managed to mantain most of the essence of the book, and replaced them with other things that surprisingly worked! Like for example the scene at Ron's house and the Death Eaters' attack... wow, I was impressed.
Also, the humor was a nice touch... and both Hermione and Ginny rock my world. Nice kiss, btw. Of course, for me, the whole Hermione/Ron/Lavender thing wasn't such a big deal 'cause I'm not a fan of the couple... so I would have prefered that Hermione hadn't spend so much time drooling (subtly) over Ron and instead... I dunno, but doing something other than that xD.
I'm watching this one again, this time in english 'cause the theatre made a mistake and I had to watch it in spanish :(

So much to love
I loved this film -- the best one yet of the Potter franchise. Things like the opening sequence that, in under a minute, so clearly summed up the end of the last film and established the warmth between Dumbledore and Harry that has grown so much over the years. I loved the details that set up the last two films. I'm anxious to see it again because I know I noticed only a fraction of those things.
I think the highest compliment, though, is that the movie made me want to read Volume 7 again because I can't wait!DAVID YATES
Hates J.K.Rowling, so he found a way to destroy her genius by butchering all the movies and he keeps going strong on that. Now do I really need to say if I liked it or not, I think not... I could've had a Hangen Daazs and a Stella with that $12. I'm not even gonna bother with the last two installement I want to save whatever that is left of great memories of that beautiful book by not watching the mediocre interpretations.
*partir en premier ne veut pas toujours dire arriver en premier*
OMG YES
I hated this "adaptation". I didn't think Yates could do worse after Order of the Phoenix, but obviously I was mistaken. The comedy was trite and some of the romance was in excess. Ginny Weasley in the movies has now become a weak version of the actual Ginny Weasley Rowling created. In HBP there is the statement, "That Ginny, she's a firecracker" (or something to that effect), but that doesn't transfer to film in anyway. Ugh. Aside from the numerous things lacking from the film and the dumb stuff added and re-ordered, the pacing and overdramatics of somethings annoyed me. It was dramatic when it shouldn't have been and comedic when it shouldn't have been. Ron's near death experience was set up and portrayed perfectly-up until they decided to ruin it with a cheap punchline. I was so infuriated after that, and Yates had no chance of redemption after that.
I'm honestly scared for the final two films. I really hope they don't screw up like they have the past two times.
So far I have agreed with about half the comments
I totally understand that adapting this book to a film in only 2 1/2 hours would be hard. And I know there will always be detractors.
HOWEVER! Some people on this thread have pointed out the very things I had issue with. For instance: they didn't explain Dumbledore's hand - it just was black. That's it - they're assuming people have read the book. Not cool. I read it, but considering that was a very key element to the danger of the items and what they could do, why bother showing it at all? It interrupts the flow of movie while you try to figure out if you missed something or they expect you to be a mind reader.
Then you have the over abundance of Ron/Lavender scenes really got to me. That really wasn't a main theme in the book. It was part of it, but I think they used easily about 30 min of screen time to that coupling. It could have been done in 10. That extra 20 min could have been given to the battle at the end - which was a HUGE part.
Then there's the attack on the Burrow - again, scenes that are drawn out and don't need to be.
And the end... I agree with a previous poster, it was not well done. It felt very unfinished.
The one scene I thought that was done perfectly was Dumbledore and Harry at the cave with Dumbledore drinking the potion. That was exactly as I read it. Spot on.
There were incongruencies, like when Ginny and Harry had their first kiss, where Harry and Dumbledore teleported to the astronomy tower instead of Hogsmeade, etc.
I'm holding out hope for the last two films. I really hope this fella doesn't wreck them, they have so very much potential!
~Without risk, there can be no innovation. Without innovation, there can be no advancement. ~
I agreee
The incongruencies can be overlooked i think, because although those scenes were a little out of sequence, at least they were included at all, as opposed to the memory's of the Guants, the battle scene at the end and dumbledore's funeral. But Harry + Ginny's first kiss kinda annoyed me, and their relationship wasn't really.. developed. They were supposed to have the scene we're they're outsides together at the end and they talk about how Ginny knows that Harry will always be trying to save the world, and that wasn't included at all.
And i thought that Dumbledore asking Harry about him + Hermione and telling him he needs to shave were both weird. They didn't have to make it a comedy!
yup!
The whole Dumbledore asking about Harry was just plain WEIRD, why were there scenes that didn't exist in the book? Half Blood Prince, the name is only mentioned twice. Alan Rickman's onscreen time keeps getting shorter, Tom Felton was actually good, the whole Harry & Ginny went too fast almost out of the blue! yeesh, so many things went wrong with this movie, I was feeling a bit hopeful when the 5th one came out cause it wasn't so bad but nope.. YATES, I HATE!
*partir en premier ne veut pas toujours dire arriver en premier*
hp
just saw it :)
I'm usually not a fan of the movies at all, I can't help remembering all the ways the books are better in comparison! The portrayal of Dumbledore just never seems right to me.. What happened to sparkly, piercing eyes and his strangely youthful vibe?
This one wasn't too bad though, and the 6th book is my fav so I expected to be more disappointed ;p
Best line of the book should have been included though- "I am not worried, Harry, I am with you".
well he was cursed and dying
Seen it! I thought it was
Seen it! I thought it was good but disappointing.
I think the Ron-Hermione-Lavender was played out very well. Frankly I loved how Jessie was able to convey how her character is saccharinely annoying. I also loved the graphics and the prod design. I loved that we still get our share of quidditch too.
Having read the books and seen the movies, I've long gotten over myself demanding that the films be more canonical, as it's tough to compress 700pp in 3 hours. But frankly, the ending was so MEH, they should've ended with a compressed Dumbledore funeral instead. And the Harry-Ginny first kiss was really MEH too. And since I wasn't able to review HP6 the book, can someone refresh me again what Harry was doing in that diner in the opening scene? And burning The Burrow was just WRONG.
So yeah, overall IMHO it wasn't all that bad, but definitely not my fave installment.
On another note
Was it just me, or did this movie totally made Dumbledore a lot gayer than he is? LOL. I dunno. Maybe I'm starting to see him in that light because JK Rowling had already outed him.
But really, who's with me?
knitting patterns yes!
knitting patterns yes! lol
Damn good bit of acting because it was subtle very subtle.
Hp 6 was....
I think that this was the best movie yet but it does not follow the book.
I think that Dumbledore's death deserved more than the wands to the air. And i really dont think they got the romance between Harry and Ginny right Alot more happend. I was so happy when Quidditch played once again. Ron N Hermione...was just great. The graphics were amazing. **with the memories...i think they should of added the ones of his parents to understand why Voldemort hates his parents & muggles. or is that in 7? lol think i need to re-read Deathly hallows. over all good. but not the greatest. lets hope Hp 7 parts i & ii. stick to the book!
i saw it last night
i saw HBP last night and i came out really disappointed. id been really excited but id heard some negative things so i lowered my expectations. i agree with everyone who says it was visually stunning, theyve really pulled out all teh stops on that front. but i cant get past how much was different from the books. i appreciate that the books are uber long and need trimming in places, but the things they took out (like the ring eplanation and umbledores hand - and dumbledores funeral!!!!) are quite important to understanding things surely?????
other posters have mentioned about the burrows being burnt down and the implications for HP7, so its a bit weird that they added somethign such as that!!
not enough magic, not enough action, not enough qudditch!!! good in places but not good enough
(my first post so be kind)
I'll wait for the dvd
...
Is this article legit? Emma Watson does NOT hold things together. She is possibly the worst actress I have ever seen. She's an atrocity to Hermione. As a die hard book fan...I hated this movie.
It was ROMANCE ROMANCE ROMANCE oh wait a little bit of undertone of good v evil and the MORE OF HERMIONE'S I LIKE RON BLAH BLAH BLAH
ugh
I was so disappointed in this. It BARELY explained the HBP ther is NO setup to the next movie. It was horrible It was a PG representation of an otherwise very serious book. Warner Bros. is catering to the masses. Its like if you tried making The Departed into a romantic comedy. It doesn't work.
I will see the next 2 films (the 7th is being split into 2) but I know I'll barf at the epilogue.
Difference of Opinion
Certainly we can have different movie going experiences and certainly we can express differing opinions on that experience, but we should be able to do so without resulting to insulting those whose opinions differ. Stuntdouble laid out a specific and thoughtful analysis of her opinion. Expressing reasons why you disagree need not be deragatory.
I am in the camp of loving this movie. Obviously such a epic story as HBP can never be retold in a movie. I understand that and always look at movie adaptions of beloved books accordingly, as a different medium, different experience. I have always felt throughout all films that one of the strengths among the films, despite some weaknesses in each of them, is the brilliant casting. Jim Broadbent as Slughorn continued that trend. And while I understand the criticisms of Emma Watson as Hermoine, I don't share them. For me Emma nailed the angst of young love in this movie. Having all the adult feelings that love and lust bring but lacking the experience and the emotional maturity to deal with them. With the added complexity of experiencing those feelings towards someone you have known "forever" and thought of as a friend. Also the emerging romances between Ron and Hermoine and Harry and Ginny ARE important plots in HBP and to me the movie did not seem to dwell unecessarily on them. The pacing was a little off in switching between the comedy, the pathos of love and the dramatic elements of this story, something I think J.K. Rowling is brilliiant at swiching between. But while I can find things to criticize, the movie worked for me.
I felt the movie set up the next two just fine. ***SPOILERS*** What we need to know is that Voldemort broke his soul into seven pieces and placed each piece in a different object and all seven objects must be found and destroyed in order for Voldermort to be destroyed and Harry is the chosen one and this is his task, especially with Dumbledore gone. That is what we need to know and that was made clear in this movie. ***END OF SPOILERS
Oh yes, there are things I missed from a beloved book, like the almost complete dearth of beloved "secondary characters" like The Weasley twins, Neville, Remus and Tonks, And some of the subplots in HBP that I enjoyed are given short shrift if any attention at all. And the movie IS missing a lot of the more detailed exposition on the central plot. But a 150 minute movie can NEVER caputre the entirity of a novel, espeically one this complex in scope.
Different medum. Different experience. Two thumbs way up for me.
Oh, and the cinematography was STUNNING.
woahwoahwoah
Yeah, I'm scratching my head
Yup!
I totally agree with you their, I'm a die hard book fan 2 and the first thing I said to my parents when they asked how it was..was..PISH..haha I felt the storyline was lost also and not a very serious as it should have been, The books on the other hand I grew up with and in turn grew up with me got more serious and even more intriguing! I'm bored of the films now! When I heard it was going to be the same guy that made the order of the phoenix movie, I thought It was going to be great! but it was what it was..sums the whole fillm up in the trailer really that the only exciting bits!
