Girl Scouts are learning from lesbians and feministsFor every dollar you spent on Girl Scout cookies last year, you kicked a small child into a pit of debauchery, reports World Net Daily in their exposé "Girl Scouts Exposed: Lessons in Lesbianism." While you were shoving Thin Mint after Tagalong after Samoa into your mouth, Girl Scout leaders were turning their long-respected program into a full-blown "sexuality camp." WND — a super-fundamentalist news site dedicated to folks who occasionally find Fox News too liberal — posted an incensed review of the new Girl Scout curriculum this week, spitting out "lesbian," "feminist," "pacifist," "activist" and "existentialist" as if an optimal combination of those words would revoke a woman's right to vote and cause the LGBT community to implode. When I first created this image, it was 666 pixels wide. Coincidence? Obviously not. First, WND exposed the radical agenda of Amaze and GirlTopia, workbooks for younger Girl Scouts. Take for example the way GirlTopia advises kids to let evil music into their ears.
Kids, this is what lesbians look like in the wild. The most derision, however, was reserved for Your Voice Your World: The Power of Advocacy, the Girl Scout curriculum for high school juniors and seniors. First strike: it encourages women to speak out against totally acceptable things like racism, child poverty and global warming. Second strike: it lists 50 women to look up to, including "out" lesbian tennis phenoms Billie Jean King and Martina Navratilova; "out" lesbian composer and women's suffrage advocate Ethel Mary Smyth; alleged lesbian Frances Perkins, the first woman appointed to the U.S. Cabinet and one of the author's of Roosevelt's New Deal; alleged lesbian Rachel Carson, environmental protection activist; "out" lesbian congresswoman Barbara Jordan; and honorary gaymo Bette Midler. Third strike: Radical agenda-maker Hillary Clinton was a Girl Scout and a Brownie. Billie Jean King likes Thin Mints, while Hillary Clinton prefers Do-Si-Dos. WND asked Girl Scout spokeswoman Michelle Tompkins why "Girl Scouts USA has chosen to focus on lesbians, radical feminists and controversial figures as role models instead of other significant female pioneers." I could give you Tomkins' answer, or I could pull a Hermione Granger (another damn activist in a book about magic/Satan worship) and just answer it myself. The reason the Girl Scouts featured lesbians and feminists in their literature is because it was lesbians and feminists who brought us women's suffrage, equal pay, women's sports at a collegiate and professional level, worldwide diplomatic efforts and — this is not a stretch — the actual thing we know as the weekend. (See: U.S. labor history, communist party.) I'm sure that you, like me, are shocked by the information uncovered by WND. We always thought little league softball fields were the recruiting grounds for lesbians, when all along it's been the Girl Scouts. Must be the draw of the uniforms — and the cookies. Inquiring minds...
Thank you for this article Sarah, I totally agree with you, but I would actually like to know how Michelle Tompkins responded to it!
Tompkins' answer
Thank You!
life long Girl Scout
I've been a girl scout for 20 + years now and I did meet my first girlfriend at Girl Scout summer camp :)
oh man
thank god girls are getting
thank god girls are getting such a variety of role models in the scouts now. i was a brownie and a junior back in the day, and it was one of the most empowering experiences i had as a kid. but i know i would've benefited from learning about some of these women-- being exposed to the contributions made by so-called "radical" women, particularly lesbians, is an integral part of any comprehensive education in women's history.
wnd's take on it? TOTALLY not worth responding to. ugh.
present!!!
brownie, junior, and senior scout here!!
thank you girls scouts of america!!
Dang, that's some crazy yellow journalism WND!

Vests rule
In my troop, the girls with sashes were the ones who didn't care enough to need something to display tons of badges on. I could barely fit all my junior badges on my vest, I would have needed like 3 sashes. =)
I'm a leader now (a rare one that isn't a mother) and I will say that while the experience in GS really varies based upon your troop, the national leadership is at least supportive of gays. Unfortunately, for many reasons, we don't have the national visibility of Boy Scouts and people tend to assume we are connected and the same. We are actually quite different, and the stances toward homosexuality is only one tiny way that's true.
However, the organization on the volunteer side is very straight. I know there are gay mothers out there, but I don't know any other gay leaders. I encourage you if you have daughters to sign them up, start a troop if you don't have one nearby - it really is a great organization for girls. Especially older girls. We lose most of them when they go to middle school which is a shame because the older girl program is really great.
What's in a name?
WND forgot the obvious point that the very name "Girl Scouts" can be interpreted as "Those who scout for girls."

Good point, Dana!
I love, love, love this post. Thanks, Stunt!
good to know
Go Girl Scouts
hmmm.
I guess we're doing something wrong in Norway, I'm the only lesbian scout i know. I do, however, know a few gay boys in scouts.
It must be because we never got a list of women to look up to. And we were never encouraged to speak up against anything. We were expected to. And we were never provided a list of songs to inspire us. hmmm... Maybe we should take a detour back to the 60s and keep boys and girls separate in scouts again, maybe then we'd have more lesbians :)
Think I'm going to suggest that in the next national forum. If I ever get a girlfriend, she'd have to be a scout to understand how I can spend three nigths a week and every other weekend in scouts ;)
I still go on the swings, but now my ass gets stuck.
Word?
If I knew this was happening I would have never dropped out before my Senior(i know stupid almost finish why did i not stick it out till the end lol). But my chapter was never really active and I felt as if I did not really belong. There was only 2 black girls in my chapter and one never showed up so I was basically the only one and I knew I liked girls so it was completely awkard for me and our chapter was affiliated w/ a church like a lot of other chapters so that was awkard too. I am just glad to know times are changing for the better : )

Power of Scouts
I find it sad and fustrating when people have nothing better to do than make attacks on positive establishments. Give me a break, do they have nothing better in their lives then thy have to stoop to attacking the Girl Scouts, which is also a non for profit! I applaud the work the girl scouts do in teaching young girls valuable lessons and morals for life. I myself, irnocally, didn't join the girls scouts because I thought it was to girly, haha. On a side note my girlfriend on the other hand was a brownie and is currently employed by the Girl Scouts, the people I have meet who work there, all women and some gay, also have to be some of the strongest and nicest people I have ever had the chance to meet, and all of them love what they do because they know it has a postivie imapct on sociey.

I think GSUSA is well aware
I think GSUSA is well aware of how much they owe lesbians historically and now.
My country's Guide organisation also has a non discrimination policy. I know what some lesbians have contributed in my local area in the past and hope to do them proud by offering a great programme and opportunities for girls here and now.
No one has mentioned this book:

I was very happy to find this book a few years ago.
I knew it!
I've always said Girl Scout Cookies are evil! Okay, I thought they were evil because of the forced gluttony, but still, EVIL!
They might as well be called Girl Scout Crackies!
"Girl Scouts USA has chosen to focus on ...
lesbians, radical feminists and controversial figures as role models instead of other significant female pioneers."
And who does WND recommend in their place? Ann Coulter?
because Ann Coulter isn't a
because Ann Coulter isn't a controversial figure at all. I was also trying to figure out who the WND would recommend to replace the lesbians, radical feminists, and controversial figures. The women of Future Homemakers of America? What song lyrics would they propose be included? Tammy Wynette's "Stand By Your Man"?
As the famous saying goes, "Well behaved women rarely make history." Of course significant female pioneers were ALL feminists to some degree - if they weren't they wouldn't have been the pioneers, the trailblazers in a man's world.
I get the feeling that WND would only be happy if the Girl Scouts were teaching girls about how great MEN are so they could grow up to be good submissive women and never rock the boat or attempt to advance women's rights in any way - like those pesky controversial feminists.
I feel jipped...
Argh, I always hate it when
Argh, I always hate it when I see stories like yours - yes, you were totally gypped! A group tends to be only as good as their leaders, and sadly not everyone gets the good leaders and the good programmes. I know the national organisations put so much into trying to train leaders and spread programmes that provide skills, plenty of outdoor adventure and fun!! but it can be easy for groups to lapse into lots of craft and repetitive stuff.
Sorry it happened to you, sounds like you got stuck with a brownie style programme for all ten years, you must have had some good friends to stick it out that long? Funnily enough the only thing I do sew for these days is Guides (mostly flags, and funny badges) but my girls would rebel if we had a diet of sewing and flower arranging instead of kayaking and camping and amazing races! We do seem to do a lot of activities that involve food though...*g*
Go Girl Scouts!
Massive pet-peeve...
"Third strike: Radical agenda-maker Hillary Clinton was a Girl Scout and a Brownie."
A brownie is a girl scout, just one of several age-level groups involved in scouting. Ergo saying Hil was a brownie and a girl scout is redundant. (sorry, just a pet peeve of mine)
Also, I'm glad someone finally picked up on the fact that girl scouting is incredibly gay. By the time we graduated out of scouts, everyone in my troop had been at least bi-curious at one point (alot of times with each other- drama abounded)
Ug, mine too!
Thanks for pointing that out, I read it and cringed, but forgot to point it out!
I think it's yet another example of confusing boy and girl scouts - I think cub scouts is an entirely different thing from boy scouts, whereas brownies are just another level of girl scouts.
When they changed up the age levels last year, they made us start calling them "Girl Scout Brownies" and "Girl Scout Juniors" etc instead of "Brownie Girl Scouts" and "Junior Girl Scouts" I think to stress that they are all girl scouts.
I spent seven summers
What is their problem? I
What is their problem? I know some of them religious fundamentalists may have problem with us lesbians, but feminists? Don't Chelsea Schilling know that without the feminists, she'll probably still be at home... doing housework, wearing long skirts, and serving her husband (i.e. still exists in parts of the world today, e.g. Afganistan.) She can't go to school, or write as a journalist for that matter.
Also, the toughest women I know are straight. ~ Alexander Hedison
I was a Girl Scout too. I volunteered for Habitat for Humanity, even though I wasn't a Christian. There are lesbians in Girl Scouts, but 80% of my fellow Girl Scouts are straight.
I have a greater issue with them going against feminists, because I read about the women's suffrage movement. The leaders were punished. They were beaten up, sent to jail, starved. Some of them nearly died. It was terrible. How can Chelsea Schilling as a woman, not respect all they've done for us?
I'm soooo glad my Mom
I'm soooo glad my Mom pushed me into the Girl Scouts!
Kids, this is what lesbians look like in the wild.
Remember, you're more scared of them than they are of you.
^^^^^ LMAO!!!! ^^^^^^
Wow
I never knew the GS were so involved in women's issues. This is fantastic! I stopped supporting any boy scout when they adopted their homophobic crap. It's so wonderful to see young ladies get educated on what it took to get to where we are. We still have a long way to go, but we've also come quite far.
I think I will have to donate to their cause to show support in the face of this rediculous article. I should send a donation in honor of WND...
I find in general, the lack of support for women's organizations appauling. I do some work with my local YWCA who struggles for funds for all types of womens programs, like domestic violence and single mothers and such. But the YMCA get a half a million dollar grant for a new building so they can have more recreational programs? Thats rediculous.
I first KINDA kissed a girl...
