Gaming is for girlsQuiz time: What do I have in common with these women?
Is it: a) A perfect complexion Ding! Ding! Ding! Just like Liv Tyler, America Ferrera and Carrie Underwood, I own a Nintendo DS Lite.
Late last month Nintendo announced that it would be making Metallic Rose a regular part of the DS Lite color palette, and adding a new two-toned Crimson and Black version to the mix. The commercial campaign kicked off last week with the above-mentioned triumvirate of female celebrity support. I have to say: I really like the commercials. Carrie Underwood's thirty second spot features her lounging on her tour bus in flip flops, playing some inexplicable game where she pets a virtual dog while her actual dog watches over her shoulder. I'm not sure I understand the point of it because the only thing Underwood says is, "Cute!" and "Neat!" Maybe its a game for children who aren't yet ready to put down their hand held game consoles and take responsibility for a real live pet? Either way: cute. America Ferrera's commercial is another level of awesome, and not just because I love Ugly Betty, Traveling Pants and the way she stumped for Hillary Clinton in this year's primary elections. America is shown playing Super Mario Brothers (my ultimately favorite game!) in Chuck Taylors (my ultimately favorite shoes!) with her name bejeweled on the back of her DS Lite! (Um, that's the difference between me and America, I guess; my DS Lite is white with no glitter.)
While Underwood and Ferrera are saddled with the pink consoles, Liv Tyler is featured with the slick, new Crimson and Black DS Lite. In her half-minute commercial, she laughs (adorably), hums out-of-tune (equally adorably), and kind of gets her butt kicked by Brain Age. Chin up, though, Liv; it's a hard game.
Nintendo's message: Women who play video games are awesome. And you know what? I absolutely agree. Submitted by on June 11, 2008 - 5:00pm. |

Girls and Games
Girls who game are the best. I'm not only saying that because I do... :)
That Liv Tyler commercial was beyond adorable. Any girl that games gets a few extra points from me.
The behind the scenes are even better
For folks with a Wii Channel on their Wii you can not only see the ads but a nice behind the scenes feature with the three ladies in question.
I have to say I haven't gotten on the portable bandwagon yet but I love my Xbox, Playstation and especially my Wii.
I GAME!!!
i don't care what channel
i don't care what channel i'm on, if that commercial comes on....i'm watching.
effective ad campaign.....sorta. ;)
I've watched all those
I've watched all those commercials a bazilion times already, and yet, I still have the urge throw down the control and watch it again.
It's Nintendogs
Hey!
Glad to see the gaming love being spread around some more on AfterEllen.com. The game that Carrie Underwood is playing is Nintendogs - great fun at first, but dull after a while.
The ads are cool though and the red DS is sexayyy.
Hope you guys will check out our gaming vlog on AfterEllen every week - Gay Girls Who Game.
Keep on gaming!

DS Lites up my Brain
I have one of those great little devices and it's great fun. Being (ahem) older, I am using the Brain Age and other Mental games to keep my 'intellectual fitness'.
DS makes me smart.
They come in pink? Seriously?
Who would seriously buy a pink Nintendo DS lite.
It is almost as bad as when they tried to make Lego-for-girls...

Who doesn't blog these days?
what's wrong with pink?!
i got my black ds lite for christmas 2006. the next day my sister went out and bought a pink one.
don't think that was her first choice, though, i think that was all the shop had, it being right after christmas.
i do like the cool new red and lime green ones they've just released here in the UK, very nice.
i went for black, purely because all my other consoles at the time were black - ps2, gamecube, psp. now i've added a (black) ps3 to the mix.
when i first wanted to get an ipod, i was going to get the pink ipod nano, but then i saw the classsics had about 10 times bigger hard drives and were not that much more in price. so it was white, but when it sadly died this year, i bought a black one to fit in with everything else i had! a bit sad, i know...
but nothing wrong with pink ds's, apart from it's maybe a boring pink, would have been nicer in an ipod nano electric pink!!
anyways, my ds, i play it so much more than any other console, although the ps3 is only a couple of months old, and i've got gta 4, so it's seeing it's fair share! my psp i don't think i've played this year, if i have, and i can remember the last game i played, it was only for an hour or so.
the ds is so addictive and quick to use. you put in the game cart, flick the switch and we're off. the psp, you've got to put the umd in, flick the switch, wait for it to load, and load and load, then you start and wait again... so for me, it can be boring.
plus the ds has the touch screen, nintendo definitely lead the way with innovation. both the ds and the wii show that. i don't think they've ever been giving the credit they deserve.
i wish they'd do pikmin for the ds (or wii), i love those lil guys!!
btw, they made lego for girls? i LOVED lego when i was growing up!! never saw the girly stuff though, lol!
Pink is veeeery popular!
I manage the games department at a Best Buy and pink is way more popular than you think. There are a ton of girl gamers out there from 6 to 60 and they love the pink DS. Other than the black it is the second best seller in our store!

I'm A Gamer
I'm a gamer for real, but I have never really been into the hand helds. I have always been more into XBox and Playstation. But the Wii is fun too.

Love Effie Ferns! Love 1 and let love

The twinkle of thier smile is the music to my soul.I love my DS <3
I love my DS <3 I have it with me almost all the time, it's in pretty bad shape I use it too much. I got the white one, it was slick and pretty before. Now it's dirty, scratched, missing the GBA thing at the bottem, and also I dropped it, and now it won't stay open if you don't hold it, and is missing a hinge. Good thing Nintendo makes quality, or it would be gone by now. I kinda wasnt to buy a new one, I might inport one from Japan, so I can have one of their exclusive colours, and this time I'll treat it better.
I am a major video game nerd, and nintendo fan
boygirl. Maybe not that much of a nin fangirl anymore, since I am planning to get a 360, to play Fable 2 when it comes out. However no mater what, I hate Sony. >DHehe, I'm the same with
Hells yeah!
I did launch into the 21st century recently though; I have a PSP.
Gaming rocks!!
Yay, the DS rules! I'm
DS Rulz the skool...or words to that effect
I was always a fan of Gameboys (how old am I?!) but never really a proper gamer and since my PS2 which is seriously under-used I hadn't paid much attention to consoles, handheld or otherwise BUT the DS is fan-freaking-tastic. We bought the father-in-law one for Xmas and I realised how great they are so my lovely wife bought me one in the New Year. In the space of a few months I've got 9 games and am seriously addicted to Scrabble (nerd alert) Cake Mania (I live to bake IRL) and Mario Kart.
Unfortunately I'm the type of gamer many true gamers love to hate, if I get stuck on a game I don't battle through determined to get to the end. I get bored of repeating a level or task and give up on the game and go play (or buy) another one!
But the best thing about the DS is how great it is for kids. I'm totally for the get out and play in the real world camp but the educational aspects of many of the DS games is brilliant. We've lots of cousins in both our families that are whizz's on the Brian Training and similar games. The interaction is great and I really think it improves their skills in so many ways. I think the Wii is great fun too and helps dispel the usual gamer vision or a loner stuck in their own world glued to the screen. At least the Wii encourages multi-playing and activity.
God, I sound like I work for Nintendo!
P.S. Yummy girl gamers...great ads!
Nicole Kidman
also has a commercial for this. it's super cute. :)
