Fátima Baeza and Patricia Vico plan to leave "Hospital Central"After 10 seasons on Spain's Hospital Central, Fátima Baeza has announced that she will be leaving the show next season. And, in true lesbian fashion, she'll be taking her partner with her. Baeza plays Esther and Patricia Vico plays Maca. Together, they form one of the most popular lesbian couples in Spanish TV history. Yesterday, in individual statements, they announced that they have decided to pursue career opportunities away from the popular medical drama . Baeza and Vico made TV history in 2005 when their characters, Chief Nurse Esther García and pediatrician Maca Fernández Wilson, were married on national primetime television. Their wedding followed the legalization of same-sex marriage in Spain.
Before them, most lesbian characters in Spain were trapped on cable. The lucky few who made it to the free national channels like Antena 3, Telecino and Cuatro didn't make it to primetime. Esther and Maca changed all that; they opened the door for an influx of gay and lesbian characters on Spanish TV. Esther and Maca's relationship hasn't exactly been stable. There were one night stands, accidental pregnancies, occasional adultery and even a pretty serious break-up, but that's standard soap shenanigans. Esther and Maca's relationship was written just like the straight relationships on Hospital Central.
In their statements yesterday, both Baeza and Vico expressed their thanks to the audience and writers for allowing them to play such authentic, groundbreaking characters. What's in store for Esther and Maca in their final episodes? Since they are leaving the show at the same time, we've got our fingers crossed for a happy ending. How do you feel about Fátima Baeza and Patricia Vico's decisions to leave Hospital Central? Submitted by on December 11, 2009 - 2:00pm. |

Heartbroken
I am heartbroken over this, considering what happened to Pepa and Silvia on LHDP. Even though I live in the U.S., I rely on getting my 'lesbian' fix from these two shows. Well, one show now. I hope that Maca and Esther get to ride off into the sunset with their children. They deserve it, and so does the audience that has supported them.
I thank Patricia and Fatima for playing these two characters with such grace and dignity, for giving lesbians such visibility, even though many of us didn't have access unless it was through YouTube (RachelM42 you are the best). I wish them both huge success in their future endeavors.
Maca and Esther will be missed!!
Very very sad day
I've been sad since I was told the news yesterday :( I feel like I'll be loosing two friends who've been with me for ten years.
But I understand their decision and wish them the best in their future projects.
Just hope the writers will give us more happiness and less drama for them in the episodes we still have ...
Necesito llorar
Not only does Hospital Central have the best depiction of a lesbian couple I've seen on mainstream TV, Patricia Vico who plays Dr Maca is one of the most stunning and talented actresses to grace any screen. I mourn her loss.
Now my motivation to learn Spanish has sunk to an all-time low. Estoy a punto de llorar. In an attempt to console myself, I will use AfterEllen as my guide to find other women-fabulous TV shows. And I will have to eat more cake.
oh no!
Question
Does 'leaving the show next season' mean that THIS season is her last, or that NEXT season will be (trying to figure out if she's leaving BEFORE next season, or AFTER next season).
Either way my hope is that there's enough time for writers to give them a happy ending. Perhaps have the two of them come back together, stronger than ever, and decide to leave for a quiet life in the country or something.
Question
nope... you have another season to go yet :-)
Both Patricia and Fatima will be leaving during the first few episodes of season 19. They are currently airing Season 18 (we're on episode 7 at the moment) in Spain, though I am not too sure how many episodes are left of this season. The seasons can vary from as little as 9 episodes to as many as 17!
As for filming, for the moment, season 18 has now wrapped but season 19 will begin in January.
So I think we will have time with these characters yet and I am sure they will be given a brilliant send of by the writers (if not I shall have to fly to Madrid and cause some serious pain!)
Good!
NOO!!
Wow that totally bummed me out! Their obviously the only reason why I watched the show, Ill miss them :(
Patricia Vico is soo hott!!
Gutted
So sad
I´m very sad...
for this news I hope that they recive the great ending that they deserve because their one of the best same sex couples of all times on television. I love them both and I´m going to keep watching them until their gone for good. I wish the best for both actress.
Maca and Esther forever!! Love you both and I´m going to miss you.
Patricia y Fatima les deseo lo mejor en su nueva etapa como actrices.
i'm gloomy.. hiks hiks
i'm not suprised hearing this is their last season.. though still im hoping they will carry on to the next season..
the most devasted is i cannot see maca again.. oowhhh nooo.. i really like her so much.. the character and style.. ms.vico is sooo gorgeous.. also esther.. they have good chemistry in the film.. remind me of tina and beth.. hopefully we're gonna have a very happy ending for both of them..
i am really gonna miss maca so badly!!!! sh****T...
My favourite couple is going....
First thing I feel like saying is that although I'm very sad, it's probably better (provided they give us a happy ending), than watching season 18th which really sucks: Patricia Vico doesn't seem to be very present, they hardly have any scenes together, when they do they argue or are very distant...for me their couple is gone already.
At one point I even thought that it would have been better to "kill" Esther at the end of 17th, at least we would have had a tragic ending and Maca would have cried her love for Esther ("no se nota" by the way in 18th). Season 17th was the best for me (together with 8th, just because I'm so romantic lol)
Well, I'm gonna miss them too. I love their couple so much. For once we had a "normal lesbian" couple on TV i-e living in the "real" world, treated like any other straight couple, no cliches, out at work, happy women, happy mothers, gorgeous women with their ups and downs. I loved their reserve, the sweet caught- kissing- scenes, the chemistry (although they could have done better with the kissing part...)
I loved everything about them also because "visibility matters" and I wish we had a French show like this one.
SAD SAD SAD
I'm super sad. I read the
I'm super sad. I read the spoilers then read about the ending and still have not had the stomach nor heart to watch it. Now, Maca Y Esther will be gone as well... And the short-lived Italian version of them also gone... this is super super sad. Someone needs to step up and allow more lesbians on screen.
I have this huge crush on Patricia Vico that I doubt will go away even after she leaves the show.
books i read and more
awww no!!!
when I read this...
i was like nooooo!!!
I have been a fan of the show for such a long time, and been watching esther and maca and their relationship - it was one of my fav.
I really hope its a good ending for them and they leave together, I would hate to have them ripped apart. Sad to see them go, but really want a happy ending if I must say goodbye to them! :-)
:(
Well, at least we have Chica Busca Chica left :)
I stoped watching Hospital Central a long tima ago, but it makes me sad that they're leaving because I was so hoocked to this show before Maca's character came in, and by that time I was dealing a lot with my sexual orientation, so when she came in to my favourite show and all of a sudden there was a lesbian couple there, that was like the rest, it helped a lot. Really, a lot. So that story will allways be in my heart. But even though I don't watch the show anymore, I'm so glad that they're leaving together so in the end they stay together.
Time to go
they were on for 11 seasons...and the writers have definitely stretched their couple to the max. Babies, more babies, adultery, break up, reunion, break up, etc. How many times did Esther "almost die"? The last example was really pathetic.
BUT I love Maca so hard. I'll definitely miss her.
...and Vero. Oh my god. I loved seasons 14-15.
We need a spin-off
I've been watching the last 10 seasons in the last weeks. I never felt so involved in the story of a couple like with Maca & Esther. I'm gonna miss them SO much! But I must admit that in this season, the characters are quite dull. Patricia said in a recent interview that she didn't like what the screenwriters were doing to Maca. Too many accidents and dramatic moments, I suppose.
I'm the romantic type and hope that we'll have a happy end next season (pleeeeeeeeeaze)! What about a spin-off???? :-D
Saying goodbye
Here is something I've found on Fatima Baaeza's fanclub:
"Since Fátima Baeza and Patricia Vico are leaving the show, we want to show them all our love and support. In order to do that, we need your collaboration. We know how much Maca and Esther have meant, how much they mean and how much they'll mean to a lot of their fans and because of that we want to give you a last chance to show them just how much. Both the Patricia Vico website and Fatima's Fan Club want you to send us your messages, anything you want them to know, about the actresses or their characters.
Together? You'll ask. You can send any message for either Patricia or Fátima, or for the two of them, to fbpvdespedida@gmail.com. Said messages will be put toegether in a book that will be handed to the actresses on their last day of filming. You can also send any kind of multimedia content: music videos, graphics, etc; anything you want. To do so, upload your work to megaupload or any other hosting service and send us the download link. Every multimedia element will be rightfully classified and burned into a DVD that will be given to the actresses.
Thank you."
That's cute...

Sadish....
