Ellen and Portia are tying the knotWhile you were busy ogling Olympic beach volleyball players, Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi were finalizing their wedding plans. That's right, kids: Ellen and Portia are getting married this weekend.
The New York Post reported that the ceremony would be small, around 20 of Portia and Ellen's closest friends and family, and that Portia would wear a form-fitting dress by Zac Posen. (I'll bet Ellen wears a pantsuit.) Days after the California Supreme Court's decision to legalize same-sex marriages in May, Ellen announced on her show that she and Portia would wed. "Planning a wedding is very stressful," she told a reporter at the Daytime Emmy Awards. "It's crazy. My gardener is now invited." "I think someday people will look back on this like women not having the right to vote and segregation and anything else that seems ridiculous that we don't all have the same rights," she concluded. When I read the news on Yahoo I was watching a past episode of Ellen's talk show. So happy that they are finally doing the deed.

Congrats to them! One thing I'll give Ellen, even when she takes heat for not inviting many other lesbians on her show, she unapologetically lives her life openly and honestly at this point, which is in and of itself a rather powerful political statement.

Well the happy couple doesn't need to tell us the actual date because, as the religious right has kindly been warning us for years, the minute two women marry there will be a clap of thunder and the sky will fall in.
But golly, imagine if it doesn't? Imagine if we all wake up safe and happy on Monday morning and ... the world goes on? What WILL the homophobes do then?

Norway 2008.

as regards to the ballot measure in CA in November, hopefully it will have been legal long enough for all the fundamentalist chicken littles to see that the sky hasn't fallen in yet, and it won't pass. At least that's what happened in MA.

I actually was waiting for an AfterEllen post on this so I could share my joy! I am taking this as a sign that I might someday be married (gotta get and keep a girlfriend first...) because they are getting married on my birthday weekend! Actually, my birthday is on Monday, but it still feels really nice. I love when other people can celebrate during the same time as I am. I hope they are extremely happy together and never forget that it is not so much a political statement as it is a brilliant commitment and statement of their love for one another. Congrats, Ellen and Portia!
