Elizabeth Banks did not have a "lesbian phase"USA Today made the gutsy move this weekend of asking actress Elizabeth Banks, "Hey, why aren't you more famous?" You've seen her before, of course: Spider-Man, Definitely, Maybe, Seabiscuit, 40-Year-Old Virgin, and lately as Laura Bush in Oliver Stone's W., or working alongside Seth Rogen in Zack and Miri Make a Porno.
So, tell us, Elizabeth Banks, why aren't you a household name?
Banks told USA Today:
I'm just going to take a wild guess that the "lesbian phase" comment was directed at Lindsay Lohan, but let's be honest: Lohan was tabloid fodder long before she met SamRo. Her infamy lies not so much in her gayness, but in her propensity for on-set drama. Lack of lesbonics aside, Oliver Stone said of Banks:
Her hairbrush makes her a shape-shifter! Seriously, though, critics are pretty sure you will remember Elizabeth Banks forever once you see W. The Salon.com critic who reviewed Stone's movie said, "Banks is so likable here that I found myself silently urging her character, 'Run! Run now, before it's too late!'"
(I still feel like that every time I see the real Laura Bush.) I've always liked Elizabeth Banks, and shockingly enough, she doesn't fool me when she changes clothes or whatever. I still recognize her. I do hope these two fall movies propel her to superstardom. If not, she could always take a page from the book of one of Seth Rogen's other co-stars. She could insinuate that she's better than the writing she's been given, and withdraw her name from Oscar contention. That'll make people talk. Did you see W.? Will you see Zack and Miri? Also, be honest: Does Elizabeth Banks really fool you when she changes her hair color? Banks really fool you when she changes her hair color?Submitted by on October 27, 2008 - 11:00am. |

Everyone is entitled to be stupid, but some abuse the privilege.
She
reminds me soooooo much of Rachel McAdams!

RE: She
I agree.
I remember her from the movie "Slither" and I believe that is the first time I had seen her. As I was watching, I thought is that Rachel McAdams but I had remember she was not mentioned as starring in the movie. ha.
I don't recognise her either!
I don't recognise her either!
I don't think the problem is her change of haircut or haircolor but to me, she looks like so many other american cheerleader type of women that I get her confused with a bunch of other actresses quite often.
Her face has nothing distinct - I wonder if this is natural or if in fact, she has got a special feature that she hides with clever make up or has had an op for. If she does, my advice to her would be to show off her mole or whatever it is, that would make her more recognisable!

Taking off - the novel, coming soon. Starring Katie, a lesbian in London...
In the meanwhile, you can read reviews of films and books with lesbian/bi characters and/or taking place in London at www.takingoff.org
Invincible and the Like
How could you not remember someone so adorable? I think that it's moreso the chamelon-esque of her being able to slip into characters that are diverse and lifelike. I'm surprised that there wasn't more talk of her role on Scrubs. She overtly funny when she wants to be and then can sock you in the stomach with the drama. I've liked her turns in most every role, but loved her in Invincible. Something about a bartender who goes to rival sporting events and eggs on the competition.
She reminds me a little of
She reminds me a little of Autumn Reeser. (Taylor from The OC.)

I couldn't be the only one who thought so!

Parker
When I saw the previews for W, I thought that was Parker Posey playing Laura Bush. I have seen Banks in other things; I just probably got her confused with other actresses.
Change is Coming...Nov '08
Not in Utah...

Not surprisingly, uber-conservative Larry H. Miller who owns the largest theater chain in Utah (and essentially the rest of the state) won't show Zack and Miri Make a Porno, but will show much more family-friendly options like the Saw series and Jackass. This happened when Brokeback Mountain came out, except then he didn't realize what the movie was about until just before it opened and cancelled the showings despite all the tickets already sold for the movie.

ASS.
She looks familiar, but always forget who she is
I recognized her from Scrubs
I saw W.
I wanted to scream in the theater for Laura to "run...run away now!" She looked like this sweet innocent girl, and, uh, but why was she attracted to W.? It just didn't make sense.
As for the actress, she did an amazing job playing Laura. I hope she has continued success, but there's no need for her to make bisexuals and/or lesbians sound bad and perpetuate the "being gay is a choice" falsehood. (Did I read too much into that because I've been reading too many comments by the Yes for Prop 8 people?)
Banks is goin to new Heights
i knew who she was... and
Soooooo...
...the rationale behind this article about some forgettable actress who has gone out of her way to say that she hasn't had a 'lesbian phase' and that that's 'normal' (i do so love it when the hetero-normative crowd use that word to describe themselves) isssss what? Give her some lesbo media attention and maybe she'll play gay?
Hmmmm...ok.
Elizabeth is a local girl.
I know who Elizabeth is...she is from my area...and when she came back here to film Seabiscuit...she was interviewed by the local papers.
What I think she has going for her is her ability to lose herself in whatever role she is in and is not a personality who plays it the same no matter what the movie and the role calls for.
The lack of "fame" and lack of gossip about her love life...I think...is in her favor...because then she can act and portray the role and be the character she intends to be.
I am so tired of the movie "vehicles" where some star plants themselves in a movie and the public is just expected to flock to it because of who they are...meanwhile, they stopped acting and developing their craft, long ago.
Thank goodness for actors like Elizabeth Banks as it is performers like her who are the ones who actually make movies still worth watching.
