"Desperate Housewives" proves desperate enough with women kissing

ABC's week-long preview of last night's Desperate Housewives played like this: "We can tell you there will be scandal. We can tell you there will be jealousy. You know there will be lies. But there's one shocker we can only hint at." Only ABC is the worst "hint"-giver ever, because the teaser aired over the go-to hymn for straight girl smooching everywhere: Katy Perry's "I Kissed a Girl."

It started like every other organic, long-term lesbian relationship on television: with liquor and a complete misunderstanding. Susan (Terri Hatcher) finds out from a student that she'll be undergoing an evaluation by her new boss, Jessie (played by Pushing Daisies' Swoosie Kurtz). Instead of leaving her performance review to chance, Susan invites Jessie over for dinner. Over a lot of wine, Susan tells Jessie that she is smart, funny and adorable, and that anyone would be lucky to have her. Then there's a hand on a knee:

Followed by a peck on the lips:

Followed by Susan making that super bemused face pulled by drunk persons the world over:

Later, Susan confesses to her friends that she's confused about the kiss. Was it friendly or is Jessie actually into her? In order to clear up the confusion, Gabby (Eva Longoria Parker) kisses Susan — twice — to help her determine the nature of the lip-lock.

"Was it like this?" Gabby asks.

"Or like this?"

It was the second. The verdict: Jessie likes her, likes her.

The next day, right before school starts, Jessie asks Susan out, and Susan tells her she's just not into women. Jessie is skeptical ("Mmm hmm. Nice boots."), and then says that she was once like Susan herself. "You're obviously worried there's a lesbian inside you trying to get out," she says.

"Um, actually, right now," Susan answers, "I'm more worried about the lesbian outside of me trying to get in."

The two then teach an awkward zoological lesson to Susan's class. One of Susan's students draws a gazelle, which Susan likes. Another draws a rhinoceros, which Susan claims to love.

Jessie: Do you, Susan? Do you really? I'm just asking: if you were on safari, and you saw a sleek gazelle next to a grungy, sweaty rhino, your eye wouldn't go straight to the gazelle?

Susan: Though I would certainly appreciate the beauty of the gazelle, if I were going to go to Africa, I'd be more excited to see the rhino.

Jessie: Are you gonna tell me you've never had any experience with gazelles? Even in college?

Susan: No. And I was on the softball team.

Finally, the two work through their confusion and decide to remain friends even after the ratings stunt is over.

ABC hyped the episode hard, and both Eva Longoria Parker and Terri Hatcher teased the press with tidbits about their on-screen kiss. Surprisingly, though, it didn't come off as tawdry. The episode was genuinely funny, especially the part about the rhinos, and the laughs came at the expense of the misunderstanding, not at lesbians themselves. In fact, Jessie's story was really quite heartfelt.

I mean, if Terri Hatcher put her hand on your knee and your lips on her lips, wouldn't you, too, find yourself a bit befuddled?

    Hm.

I would, yes.  If she didn't look so pale and sickly.

    ...ROFLMFAO-seriously!

...she is really pale and sickly-looking! If she were like 20 or 30 lbs heavier i would tap the booty that is Terri Hatcher [*stamped!].

...this episode angered me to a spectacular degree...but then again; i have yet to come across a DH episode that didn't-great job Mark Cherry-you jagweed!

***No, you came out wrong...shut it DOWN!***

    LAME!

What they should have done was introduce a lesbian character that moved into the neighbourhood, and make one of the main characters a LUG that knew the lesbian in college. Any of those characters could be a LUG.

They could have dragged out the storyline all season, and at the end of the season reveal which one was the LUG. It could have been  played out like the cheesy mini-series: Lace. They drop hints all season about who the LUG is but don't reveal until the end. The lesbian character could be like Marina from the L Word.

    typically

i hate faux lesbianism, but this episode didn't seem that way and it sounds pretty funny and entertaining.

    Umm, what exactly was the

Umm, what exactly was the point of all of this? And the kiss between Eva Longoria and Teri Hatcher was just for ratings because it certainly wasn't necessary.

(Yawn) Boring! So when will this whole charde of two girls kissing = lesbianism  money making scheme will be over in the media?  Here I was thinking being a lesbian was being emotionally, sexually and pysically attracted to womyn, falling in and out of  love, dating, develop  non-platonic relationships with womyn ,experience heartbrakes, develop butterflies in your stomach -oh I can't breathe - I see my crush and being involve in the LGBTQI community.

Ah Sweeps month, how I've missed you.

"Um, actually, right now," Susan answers, "I'm more worried about the lesbian outside of me trying to get in."

That was hilarious. I'd rather shove a hot poker through my eye than watch DH but that was a funny line. All the quoted lines were pretty hilarious.

    I can't stand Teri Hatcher.

    I can't stand Teri Hatcher. >.<

    Lame

I thought the episode was really annoying. I thought we were past the days of the predatory lesbian character.

Most lesbians I know have better gaydar than to mistake a heterogal like Teri Hatcher for someone who plays for our team.

Also, most gals I know can take "I'm not gay" for an answer.

    SubtextRules's picture

    The summary...

made me laugh out loud. But I'm with the minority here, I can't stand Hatcher. Just as someone mentioned in the original article advertising this episode, she was hot as Lois Lane and not as Susan. But Hatcher isn't a genius in person, so I'm not surprised about what acting direction she went. But I digress.

I'll second the reader's comment above, what was the point of this episode? Again, the lesbian is used as a plot ploy and nothing else. Don't they already have a gay male character on that show? If ABC wants to show our people they care, how about they focus on him for a change. Being represented on television, shouldn't be a one-episode thing. And I don't believe it's wrong that any of us expect more or even believe we deserve more. It's a shame some AE readers settle for so little.

Now if you guys want to see a decent story line, jump on the Otalia band wagon. Their show actually cares about showing same-sex relationships in a positive light and on more then 1 day. *Gasp* who'd a thunk it was possible?

Every time "Sweeps" month comes along, somebody comes up with a kiss hoping to bring in ratings. Weak.

    Sounds Good To Me

I don't know, I love Desperate Housewives.  It's my favourite kind of funny - a wonderfully mordant sense of humour.  Similar to that great Australian movie, Muriel's Wedding, actually.  Most of the storylines on DH are this silly.  But they're really funny.

I can't wait to see this episode.  Seems to me we've got much worse things to complain about than these fabulous women... kissing.  I'm there, Eva!  Wait till I program my DVD!

    swack's picture

    I liked it

I thought it was funny and clever. It's DH, not sensitive drama. Of course there's going to be comical misunderstandings and lusty shenanigans.

    One of my favorite shows

However I thought the kissing was unneccessary, but the way Susan handled it made me laugh.  Leave it up to her to be the ditzy one.

    i missed it.

i was watching 'breaking bad', which outranks DH in my book- for me... BUT! what someone said above..."i'm not gay", usually works... not for me! i don't buy that one. nearly all of my gf's have been straight- till me. my current 'straight' girl and i have been together 10 years... :)

    Swoozie Kurtz? RLY!? *sarcasm*

Are you effin kidding me? The best they could do was Swoozie Kurts? Of all the ladies in Hollywood who I'd NOT want to ever see kissing Teri Hatcher- or anyone- she would be at least top 5..... Gross.
