Camile gets lucky on "Stargate Universe"On Friday night's Stargate Universe, Camile Wray returned home to visit her partner in an episode we've been hearing about since SyFy first announced that Ming-Na would take on the role of a lesbian IOA officer in the newest incarnation of SGU. Camile's scenes with her partner Sharon (played by Reiko Aylesworth) only account for about four minutes of the episode, but Ming-Na and Aylesworth infuse their characters with such warmth that their limited screen time together is quite affecting.
In fact, of the four minutes that Camile and Sharon are together, half of it is a musical montage.
Yet despite the sparse dialogue and minimal moments together, "Life" is an extraordinary landmark in lesbian television. Science Fiction, generally — and SGU, specifically — almost always places its emphasis on fantasy and nanotechnology, not on love and affection. Sure, there are plenty of epic romances set in space, but they always feel like an afterthought. Stargate Universe has chosen to frame Camile's entire story within the context of a loving, committed relationship with another woman. And because Sharon and Camile's relationship is given the most gravity of any on the show, it is the story-telling device that is used to anchor the entire crew of Destiny to Earth. Which is to say that the audience is supposed to connect with every character's humanity because two lesbians' hearts are breaking as they are forced to live light years apart.
I thought Ming-Na and Aylesworth really nailed their scenes together: the deep affection and attraction, the moments of savoring one another's closeness, the taking it turn to be strong. It was authentic and poignant, and frankly, it was the only time I've ever cared about people being trapped in space. (Sorry, Starbuck.) When Camile is getting ready to return to Destiny, she and Sharon have this moving conversation:
Sniffle! I love both of you guys! Did anyone else watch Stargate Universe on Friday? What did you think of Camile and Sharon's relationship? Submitted by on November 23, 2009 - 2:00pm. |

I just saw it today
or at least since we saw agent Janis with her lady friend a few weeks ago.I cried...
...when I first saw the scene in which Camile comes home in a foreign body and Sharon realizes, for the first time, it really is her lover, her partner, her everything standing on her doorstep. the shock, surprise and love is... so beautiful.
There was such an honesty between the women, so much love and ease. I immediately believed they had been together for 12 years (and thank the Goddess these women are finally allowed to be mature women instead of having to pretend to be 15 years younger!)
I think this portrayal, the way it was handled as a non-issue that Camile came home to a woman, is quiet groundbreaking. And not in the Grey's Anatomy way. I really hope SGU can keep this up. I doubt we'll see much of the relationship after this, at least not in the beginning, but they still have plenty of chances to address it and they really should take it.
Also, Ming-Na is just a doll. Following her on Twitter has been heartwarming. She is so committed to this and that is really important for me as well.
Honestly, this ep and last week's 'Time' have finally sold me on SGU. I'll keep watching although I can't vow not to fast-forward to part of the eps.
EDIT:
Okay, sorry, more to say.
What I am worried about is the complete lack of actual conversation. This is an SGU problem in general but really, if I came home to my wife, I doubt I would recall all the fun times I had trapped on an alien starship Gods-know-how-far from earth. I'd be talking about that parking lot accident that just happened to me. I'd be planning strategies to come home.
But maybe everyone will start processing eventually? I mean, she's a lesbian for Gods sakes!
EDIT 2:
Btw, how breath taking are those pictures?!
Who you gonna be if you can't be yourself,
you can't get it from t.v., you can't force it on

It was quite lovely, but
Love the show, loved the episode
Camille and Sharon seem to have the only committed, long-term relationship on the show, especially when shown opposite the drama of Col. Young's marriage.
I just have to speak up for Firefly as the exception to the genre - we cared far more about the characters than the tech. :)
It was wonderful
I watched it, and I have to say that was one of the most positive, affectionate, loving, and beautiful displays of a REAL lesbian relationship I have seen on virtually any tv show, scifi or otherwise.
I'm not completely sold on SGU as yet, but I am persevering as I think it has a lot of potential (although I would like it if there were some more traditionally 'Stargate' aspects to it, and less SG: BSG, if you know what I mean).
But I almost cried watching those scenes ... as I was so prepared, as we all are, to have queer characters disappoint us, time after time after time. But this time, not only was it wonderfully portrayed, but it was MORE loving than any of the other relationships in the show.
The thing I adored was in that last exchange you quoted above, Stuntdouble, Sharon doesn't say "I love you", she says it in Camile's native tongue, to which Camile replied in english "I love you, too" ... that really spoke volumes about their love and their relationship ... not to mention, when Camile proves it is her in the beginning by talking about the chair in her language, really told you the depth and history of the relationship :)
Course, a part of me is nonetheless waiting for the writers to screw it up nonetheless ... I'm so jaded, lol.
But that said, I really did love this episode for those moments *sigh*

Normalcy...
First off - Stuntdouble I love your commentaries! You manage to get me to think without me even realizing it :)
This ep of SGU succeeded so well...Camille and Sharon not turned in the 'the other'. I lovd the fact that of all the returns we've seen so far in the show this has been shown to be the most stable - the most based in trust and commitment. To me that speaks volumes about what the showrunners feel and what they want to convey! Perhaps this is the first step in the right direction - steering lesbian kisses away from sweeps stunts and making them just be...
*As for Starbuck, well, she'll always have half my heart - the other have belongs to Gina Inviere! :)
Blessings,
SMB
Good episode
On the other hand, several non-scifi lesbian friends watched the episode and were disappointed at how little was shown.

Yeah ...
I, unfortunately, also went to a couple of the scifi media websites too to check out the reactions on the part of scifi geekdom, and I saw the same shite ... a combination of "wahhhh, feelings, girly emotional crap!!!!!" and variations of homophobia, from outright blatant stuff to just immature crap.
You know, as a lesbian scifi geek, it was REALLY disappointing to see that ... the ugliness *sigh*

Anyway
Actually..
I do believe that next week's episode (Justice) is the 'Mid-Season' Finale (whatever the heck that means). So, maybe the writers etc. will forgot that they need to screw up this relationship... :)
I really liked the episode (though, wasn't it supposed to be Ep 7? Thought I read that somewhere). And I'm someone who really really detested Ming-Na's character Chen on ER, so, it's nice to know that it was the writing/producing and not the actress that made me think the character sucked... :)
And, I do agree that this isn't really the Stargate of SG-1 or even Atlantis, it's more like a BSG. And while I'm a little sad about it that there's a bit more Opera than Space, if I just call it Universe in my head, diassociate it from most of the Stargate world I don't think it's a bad show at all.
I agree...
..that Camille and Sharon's relationship was shown to be very well developed...it was almost like we didn't need any background on them because they slipped right into their lives when Camille came in as if it was another day at the office as opposed to a return from light years away..the affetion shown was poignant too...sweet and with a definite spark!
Hopefully the SGU writers won't mess it up...and it should be sent to the writers of Grey's Anatomy...Callie and Arizona's relationship...if that's even what it can be called...is sooooo disappointing.
"...what goes 'round...comes 'round..."
very impressive acting
im so happy
I thought the scene was
totally put tears in my eyes...
Is this show being written one-handed?
1. A lesbian in mainstream sci-fi - woohoo!
2. A lesbian in mainstream sci-fi that has lasted longer than one ep - woohoo!
3. Anyone else think it weird that people are jumping into having sex with their partners who are in a stranger's body without really knowing for 100% that their partner is inside there? And what if the borrowed body turns them off, physically? "I'm sorry - I just don't fancy you in that body." We might have been seeing Ming-Na in that scene but her lover wasn't.
Young trying to repair his adultery messed up marriage by screwing his wife in another man's body? What-the-hell? Cue the body-swapping ep that sees the lesbian's body being used by someone else to have the hetero sex they've been denied. I can't see how it's possible to do that story without offending someone. Did the lesbian agree to this - then WHY? if she didn't - then where to start on the inherent violation. Why is ANYONE agreeing to their bodies being used to have sex with strangers? And if they're not - there's a law against that.
I'm sure they will get around to this moral what-the-f**k? But why didn't anyone stop at the first instance and say "I am not using someone else's body to have sex with my partner on account of I can't think in which universe that would NOT be a world of wrong!"
If they just wanted to explore the kinky world of having sex in another's body they didn't need to leave Earth to do that.
The sex thing
yea I totally agree with this, I just don't think it would happen - with either person (the one in the strange body or especially the one seeing and touching the strange person's body!) did the writers not think that this would cross our minds? thats like the 3rd time its happened and each time me and my mum are watching we're just thinking "what? really? but.. what? how? no."
All of that part just seems really immoral and other than that just plain creepy
one question...
; )
Wow
Wow you guys are really desperate aren't you.
That was rubbish scene, on a rubbish show.
Besides, the lesbian agent on Flash Forward had more viewers than this bad attempt at "science fiction"
I've been really enjoying
I've been really enjoying Stargate Universe. It's a lot darker than the previous Stargate show, I think, but I still enjoy it.
The lesbian scenes in this episode were great. It showed such emotion and familiarity between the couple and you could totally see that they'd been together happily for a long time. And it was a very healthy relationship with affection shown even though they've been together for 12 years.
Ming-Na's character hasn't been shown all that much on the show, but hopefully that'll change. I'm really looking forward to seeing how she copes with being apart from her partner and to see her interact with the crew more.
And her breaking down in the shower scene in the end just about broke my heart. It was a good bookend scene to the one before where she was so happy showering in her own home for the first time in a long time.
Sadly, I found it unmoving
Sadly, I found it unmoving and rather boring. But I could say the same about the show itself.
"If you're wondering how he eats and breathes / And other science facts / Then repeat to yourself 'It's just a show, / I should really just relax."
I enjoyed it =)
I thought it was good, deffinately found the acting believable and i agree on the whole "only time I've ever cared about people being trapped in space" thing. especially the scene where she's back on the ship crying in the shower, i really felt for her.
Now the show in general just needs to get better! I'm a stargate fan and so far this series hasn't impressed me much (except for these 4 minutes =P) I think they need to develop some more likable comradery type relationships between the characters, it's missing the witty banter type conversations you used to get on the first two stargates.
Also, I like that it's a new format, the more intimate, less planned looking camera angles and such but I think they need to get a bit more happening in each ep, hopefully they'll find some sort of cool technology or interesting life form soon (flying sand does not count)
Just to Clarify
Camille's body will be used by another woman to have sex with a man. And the point of that and all the other sex would be........? It seems a cheap and unimaginative attempt to be taken seriously - really? That's all they could think of to make a darker, more adult Stargate? Body swapping sex?
So far it's more fi than sci and I wonder what they will do when every possible permutation of sexual partner has been exhausted?
I don't think it's enough to just have a lesbian on the show or having her kiss another girl - as an audience I'd like to think we're not that desperate. I think all of the relationships so far are coming across as shallow or just plain weird on account of the fact no one seems to think it's at all strange that people perfom intimate acts in someone else's body as though, of course, their partner's signed up to having sex with a stranger's body.
Yes, Flash Forward did manage to give us a realistic portrayal without any body swapping involved.
Kudos to Ming-Na and Reiko for their performances but I am having a major problem with the writing and the most heavily boy-brained Stargate ever made.
I'm excited! Loved it!
While I agree that the whole body-swapping plotline definitely presents a host of moral and generally icky dilemmas, I do think that it's a little edgier than the previous Stargate shows (obviously). I love that this genre is finally tapping into the storylines that come along with a lesbian relationship, and I love that this relationship is one of the only ones on the show that is solid and healthy (apart from the whole I'm-having-sex-with-your-mind-but-not-your-body thing).
I'm stoked for what's to come!
