Beyoncé considers gender roles in "If I Were a Boy"

My two secret powers are discovering lesbian subtext in everything and mishearing lyrics. So, when I first listened to Beyoncé's new song, "If I Were a Boy" I just wrote it off as my powers acting up.

But then I heard it again, and I thought to myself, "Beyoncé, sweetheart, you don't want to be a boy; you want to be a lesbian."

To wit: these are the things Beyoncé wants to do as a boy:

1) Wear whatever the heck she wants to wear.

2) Drink beer.

3) Chase after girls.

4) Kick it with her loyal friends.

5) Make the rules as she goes.

6) Understand how it feels to love a woman.

I've created a little comic strip called, "If I Were a Gay." It's based on The L Word's fifth season, and all the text is straight from Beyoncé's mouth. I hope to help her find what she's looking for.

If I were gay, even just for a day...

Unfortunately, Beyoncé's song ends weirdly with the moral being that she wants to be a boy so her boyfriend can be a girl so that she (as him) can treat him (as her) like poop, to see how he likes it for a change. Or something.

Watch for yourself:

Beyoncé "If I Were a Boy"

Personally, I like my version better.

All i've got to say is that i LOVED the comic strip

    Bad me..

I hadn't even thought of that, and I've heard the song quite a few times now. The clip still confuses me a little though, I just keep having this Midsummernight's Dream flashback (wasn't that the one with a girl who plays a guy who plays a girl.. or the other way around...?)

You didn't even take your clothes of, yet you've never looked more naked.

That was Twelfth Night. In Shakespeare's imagining, it was a boy who plays a girl pretending to be a boy, but in modern theater, it is a girl playing a girl pretending to be a boy.

    As You Like It

Rosalind in As You Like It is also a girl pretending to be a boy (played by a male actor in Shakespeare's time), when she goes into exile into the forest with her cousin Celia.

    loved song

So I totally loved this song for all the same reasons when I first heard it - also because I have always been one of the guys growing up and think that guys have each others backs way better than girls do - she had to kill it with the last verse - i think we should change the song

"I am not what happened to me, I am what I choose to become."

the comic strip has me feeling super nostalgic...smh

i love alice with long hair...and shane looks like such a lothario.

I totally loved your version better! But I also love the line original line,

    "If I were a boy
    I think I could understand
How it feels to love a girl
    I swear I’d be a better man."

Somehow when a girl says that, it sounds very sexy...or maybe it's just me.

    Oh Ciara

The whole Ciara song, video, choreography, costumes...everything was just pure gorgeousness. Ciara wins. Hands down. I've always loved that song and it's not even a genre of music I usually listen to.
    Melissa Hsu's picture

    Agreed.

    That comic was genius.

Beyonce just needs to give Ciara back her song, and Madonna back her leotard. It's too much.

    Its not about that...

Thanks for pointing out that Ciara did it before Beyonce. I already knew, but if her version was as addictive as Beyonce's, then this post would be about Ciara, not Beyonce.

Ciara may have done it first, but Beyonce did it right........

lol but Beyonce did put her spin on it to make her own...

    empiremunchies's picture

    Confused!!!!

The video always gets me confused...because I'm expecting (or secretly hoping) that Beyonce would be trying to get a girl....I keep thinking well if she WERE a boy she'd really would be chasing girls and so it would make sense for her love interest (cop partner) to be a girl....Just my take on it!!

I think Beyonce put her own spin on the topic because I dont even think about Ciara's song when I listen to Bey's.  I think they both did a great job...but I give the edge to Ciara because she went all out...Like she really thugged it out with the baggy pants and sneakers and all that...Beyonce just did her usual sexy, tight fitted clothes.

"like a boy" vs. "if i were a boy"

personally, i like ciara's song better. not to mention this...

I never really found Ciara attractive until I watched her like a boy video.

    Same here!

Before then, I just knew Ciara as the cute girl in a few of Missy Elliot's videos who would have been even cuter if she had just gotten her damn hair out of her face long enough for me to see what her face and body actually looked like. When I saw the Like A Boy video, with the baggy pants and the tattoos and the Ciara-in-a-suit and Ciara-in-a-little-dress... I swooned all over the place. Oh, God, why don't more female celebrities dress like that all the time? They don't seem to realise how foxy hot it looks!

But I prefer Ciara's simply because I rarely feel like listening to slow songs.
    flamethrower's picture

    Actually

I give Beyonce a lot of credit for doing this song and vid. When I first saw it, (aside from thinkin how mad hot she is in a tank and a cop uniform) I gave her props for tryin to communicate to the fellas in a way they might be able to understand and actually try to change the way they deal with women. I thought it was very provacative and yes, crazy with subtext!!!!

i loved the gay thing much better :P..

I heard the subtext in this

I heard the subtext in this song immidiately! :D I thought: This song is so GAY!

But when I really listened to the lyrics I thought: You don't HAVE to be a boy to love a girl, Beyonce! But, ok, I still like the song.

    it's a sexist song

I found this song quite sexist, with its implication that all men treat women poorly and are "players" and women never behave in the same way. (Admit it: we've all known lesbian players... and straight women who are players too.) It really bothered me.

It was cool that someone noticed the similarity to Shakespeare's gender play which, by the way, shows up in a lot of his plays.

On another note, why oh why was Beyonce not on afterellen's top 100 hottest women list? She is uber-hot, in my opinion, and she was certainly on my list (as was Pam Grier, whom I also think is totally overlooked as a hottie).

    Joyous's picture

    Meh

This song confused the hell outta me when I first heard it. Still didn't make me like Beyonce
    Sarah's picture

    Stolen Song...

In case some of you didn't know all ready, Beyonce ripped the song from up and coming singer/song writer, BC Jean. I loved BC Jeans version before Beyonce got a hold of the song. Here's the original version: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EdjtO4iKU-A

But I must say, your L Word version of the song beats them both. :P

I mean, the real meaning is crappy, but man that song is so gay. Geez.

    I really don't agree with

I really don't agree with "the moral being that she wants to be a boy so her boyfriend can be a girl so that she (as him) can treat him (as her) like poop, to see how he likes it for a change."

I think that the moral in this story is that she could do all those things (chase after girls etc.) if she was a boy, but she wouldn’t, because she knows how it hurts to love a man who does those things. It criticises the way many men behave (taking women for granted), She thinks that, if she could, she would love a woman better.

    Two composers

According to the official single info "If I Were a Boy" credits Toby Gad and BC Jean as the composers.

The first time I heard this song I was like...'wait, is this meant to have a gay vibe?' but then I quickly realised it was Beyonce, and hope was lost...

After those wonderful L Word annotations I feel like I wasn't entirely wrong ^^

    Thank You

For a lol moment..I like Ciara's video better, because of the dancing and choreography, but I think Beyonce's version does a better job provoking Le Cock into thinking. Although, If I were a gay version beats out both:)
