Barbara Walters is easily amusedIf last night's "10 Most Fascinating People of 2008" is an accurate indicator, it doesn't take much to charm Barbara Walters. Only three women made the list: AfterEllen.com sweetheart Tina Fey; her doppelgänger, Sarah Palin; and the omnipresent, omnipotent, omniscient Miley Cyrus. Most fascinating about Miley Cyrus is the fact that she just signed a seven-figure book deal. No, I'm not joking. The star of the crazy-successful Hannah Montana earned Disney $1 billion this year in ratings, merchandising and concerts. One billion dollars.
Walters mentioned Cyrus' scandalous Vanity Fair photo shoot, calling it R-rated. I didn't get the hoopla when the photo came out, and I don't get it now. Apparently Barbara and I are watching entirely different R-rated movies. I give this photo a G-minus at worst.
Here's where it gets weird: Tina Fey and Sarah Palin might look alike, but Fey actually has more in common with Miley Cyrus. She, too, just signed a book deal, though it was only for a reported six figures. And she also took a turn sitting for Annie Leibovitz in Vanity Fair.
No one is saying that photo is R-rated, but that's because you can't read my thoughts. Walters asked Fey if she felt like she was too hard on Sarah Palin, and Fey said no, that much of their material was just direct quotes from Palin. The side-by-side video comparison of Palin speaking and Fey imitating her was uncanny.
Walters narrated a mini-E! True Hollywood Story about Palin, but the Alaskan governor wasn't available for an interview. Walters did make a good point, though: that, like it or not, politicians have become celebrities, and that Palin is the personification of the trend. I felt like Ellen DeGeneres or Rachel Maddow would have been much more inspired choices for Walters' list than, say, Tom Cruise. Her interviews with Cruise, Will Smith, Rush Limbaugh and Michael Phelps went just like this:
The number one spot went to Barack Obama, obviously. I can't argue with that. I also can't argue with Miley Cyrus. The little girl I mentor wanted to see a Hannah Montana concert more than anything in the world, so I stood out in the cold for hours waiting to buy tickets a few weeks ago. When the doors opened, the concert sold out in 90 seconds. Best of both worlds indeed. Who would you consider the most fascinating people of 2008? Submitted by on December 5, 2008 - 10:00am. |

eh, 33%
Is not that bad. Better than lots of lists, as we bemoan here!
I don't really understand Tom Cruise, especially. Did I miss something, and did he do something exciting this year? I'd say the same thing about Will Smith and Rush Limbaugh to a slightly lesser extent. And much as I love Ellen, I'd say the same thing about her. She didn't do anything particular in 2008 more than she did in 2007, etc.
Michael Phelps, Miley Cyrus, Tina Fey, Sarah Palin, and Obama are all obviously huge this year specifically so those are good choices.
I might have picked a couple more Olympians like Dara Torres, Nastia Liukin...or I guess there were other men competing right? haha. Rachel Maddow would have been good - she just erupted into stardom this year. Maybe even like, Paulson, or someone related to the economic mess, though that might be a downer.
Well, there was that one
Oh gee, I guess getting married
I'm sure it was fascinating for her but that's not the point
Plus, other gay celebrities got married in 2008. As did lots of non-famous people. I thought the point was people who had done things nobody else had and are therefore fascinating. I'm fascinated by what someone is like that won 8 gold medals. Or signed a million dollar deal at age 16, or whatever it was Cyrus did. Or was the first man with African heritage to be elected to be a US president. If I want to know what it's like to get married, I can talk to tons of people, gay or straight. I might even think that the one half of the sweet old couple that got married first (don't remember their names, they were like 90 and one of them just died recently, and they were together for like 60 yrs) - if you want to interview someone who is interesting because of gay marriage, maybe her.
Don't get me wrong, I love Ellen, and I love that she got married (especially cuz I bet those who didn't get their act in gear are kicking themselves now). I just don't necessarily think it is so amazing that it's a horrible omission to have left her out. I think the years she came out, or started her talk show maybe, were much bigger.
Political women fascinate me
Even though I can't stand Sarah Palin, she'd be on my list simply because I'm curious to know what she really thinks of Tina Fey. Somebody else that fascinates me is the blogger (Amy Balliett) who started Join the Impact and helped motivate thousands of gays and lesbians to march for equal rights on November 15.

I think what makes that
Wawa irrelevant
This was the laziest piece of trash I've seen in a long time. Half of Wawa Walters interviews were clips from old View segments or other tv shows. Seriously, how hard is it to tear Phelps away from his busy schedule of visiting strip clubs in order to do a sit down with Babs?
I disagree with her choice to put Miley on the list. One photo scandal doesn't necessarily make her fasinating. Instead, how about putting Rachel Maddow on the list? She was virtually unknown until her biting wit and excessive intelligence thrust her into the forefront of tv news journalism. She fascinates me a hell of a lot more than Miley does.
Tom Cruise on the list was basically a hastily put together junket for Valkyrie. Did Tom really do anything this year other than steal Katie's thunder and carry Suri around NYC? Why not put Brad Pitt on the list instead? Brad has done phenomenal things in New Orleans, became a father to 2 new beautiful babies, photographed Angie for W, and has The Curious Life Of Benjamin Button coming out - which is 100 times more fascinating than Valkyrie.
Wawa Walters is becoming irrelevant as far as I'm concerned. Her choices seem to be based on what she thinks we want to see or whose publicist pushed hardest.
agreed
tom cruise = such a ridiculous pick. brad pitt would be WAY better. and oh, that chick; what's her name? rachel maddow?!!??

"tom cruise = such a ridiculous pick"
I think that's a typo.
can sarah palin please go away?
seriously? i never want to hear from that woman again. tina fey is pretty fascinating and has a sick sense of humor...and miley cyrus is just about to start oversaturating her market. her ominpresence is irritating. as for the photos, this country has got a decision to make; either teenagers are considered minors who are to be protected from being sexually exploited or they are are adults who are allowed to be sexualized. the photos were ridiculous to me...if we're going to put out imagery like that about a 15 year old, whats the point of statutory rape laws? america puts out too many mixed messages about teenagers, particularly girls. as for rush limbaugh, if being an ignorant drug addicted, racist, sexist, duplicitous republican loudmouth goon makes him fascinating, then i guess he belongs on the list. there's one person i can't disagree with making the list: barack obama. he is something else. ;-)
Good God!
"No one is saying that photo is R-rated, but that's because you can't read my thoughts."
I am reading your thoughts....how did I miss this photo of her? I never had this kind of thought about Tina....just love the way she makes me laugh....but damn! The sexy librarian thing has become a lost art it seems. She has brought this kind of sexy back, thank you. Brains + Beauty is one sure way to get and keep my attention.
Sorry, this thread is about Ms. Walters I know, but I have nothing to say about last night's show. Only that I watched it, and I want my hour back.
whatev
I vote for Joy Behar for next year's list
Last night's show was great, although I'm over Tom Cruise and Will Smith (hasn't she done enough with those two already?). Barack, of course, was the obvious choice for "most fascinating" since Sarah Palin would top the list of "most annoying." But that's another show for another day.
I must say that the best part of the show was Joy Behar's comedic close in her attempts to figure out how to get on Barbara's list. TOO FUNNY! I love Joy, and I hope she makes it some day!
Tom Cruise =
Tom Cruise = zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz His people probably called in some favours or something.
Will Smith, another total bore. And Michael Phelps: his 15 minutes are up!
I also realized Wawa has no sense of humour when I watched her interview of the Obamas. Compared to their warmth and lightness, she came across like a very dead fish.
Glad I didn't bother watching the program.
Oh Ms Walters
I thought about DVRing that because hell knows I would never sit down to watch it live but decided to watch my DVDs of Dante's Cove instead. They were much more entertaining.
I think Barbara Walters is a bit out of touch with reality. Will Smith, as much as I love him, really didn't do much this year and Rush McDrug Addict should be sent into exile. Miley Cyrus just demonstrates just how much we need to better influence our children. She's 'dating' a man for Christ sakes! Tom Cruise is simply a detriment to society.
What happen to Rachel Maddow or Keith Olbermann (I just think he's swell... ) Hell even Leonardo DiCaprio was out there trying to get more voters to the poles. I would've liked to seen Nastia Liukin up there for her achievements. 5 medals and the 3rd American to win the All Around, that's a feat that should be recognized.
Oh Ms. Walters, I think the time you spend sitting next to that harpy on The View is doing horrible things to your mind. Go sit next to Whoopi and maybe you can get your sanity back.
And Yay for Tina Fey. She cannot do wrong one bit.
Who is Miley dating?
I normally do think we sexualize little girls too much but then I don't usually understand art so I figured it was something like that - you know, how if you look at Playboy it's porn, but if it's a naked woman in the Louvre it's art.
I agree Nastia is way more interesting than some of them. Seriously, Will Smith this year? I'm actually hard-pressed to think of anything he did this year. A couple of mediocre movies maybe?
DONT
There's nothing g-rated or
There's nothing g-rated or appropriate about taking pictures of a naked fifteen year old and putting them in a national magazine. There's a big difference between having a grown woman pose like this and putting a child in this situation.
Also, like it or not, nobody, aside from the President Elect, capturd people's attention like Palin did. I have no idea why Cruise or Limbaugh were on the list, except to add padding.
Pathetic picks
Barbara's list was pathetic. Tom Cruise? Miley Cyrus? Rush? Fascinating? I think she needs to revisit the word. It was obvious who her Most Fascinating was going to be from the commercials. This list was a snooze-fest!
WahWah appears to have taken her list
Just once
Just once I wish she would throw in some ordinary people. Aren't there ordinary people out there who are fascinating? Or is it strickly celebrities and politicians?

So, Barbara Walters is largely irrelevant in my life...
...but I had to comment. Not on her Top Ten List, because aside from Obama and Tina Fey the list pretty much sucks. Rush Limbaugh? Seriously?
Anywhoo, I click a lot of headlines as I'm in a media studies/Sexuality program and was dumbfounded to see that I had somehow completely missed that Miley Cyrus "controversy." I don't care what the "rating" of the photo might be... If somebody took a picture like that of my 15-year-old cousin, I would hunt them down.
My roomie informs me that her parents were on set during the photo shoot, but what parents in their right mind would say, "Oh sure, you can take pictures of my half-naked 15-year-old daughter? As much as I respect Annie's work, I think that the blatant sexual objectification of this CHILD is horrifying.
Rant over. Sorry.
"Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It's not." ~Dr. Seuss, The Lorax
I agree
That photo clearly sexualizes MC, and the fact that some people think it's okay to do that to a 15 year old in a national magazine means something is very wrong.
i turned it off
barbara walters has become so irrelevant to me. i turned this program on- and much like many others above- the thought of tom cruise's self- flaggelation and ditto will smith w/ the self satisfied leer, i switched to ER. bw has become a has been, give me diane sawyer anyday- now SHE's a MILF, even though she's childless. when bw is on the view, and i know it's 'her' show, i don't watch.
i WOULD have liked to seen that bit w/ joy- love her.
and- one last thing- has anyone else noticed that jada, will's wife, is looking a little rough these days? she used to be hot!
oh! and one more really last thing- did anyone notice that rachel looked a bit rough also last night (thursday)? better tonight, i was relieved.
The miley photo...
Wouldn't bother me one bit if it were Natalie Portman or Tina Fey or any number of people who are older than FIFTEEN.
Having a girl that young do a photo shoot to appear topless makes it not G rated in my book. Annie is an extraordinary artist and she knew what she was doing - the pose is not simple and innocent - it reflects a visual history that invites an sexualized gaze.
miley
There was a time I respected
For the whole year?
If it's for the whole year, then I only understand a couple of her choices. Barack Obama of course is a no-brainer. Tina Fey and Sarah Palin certainly. I even get Miley Cirus - even if I'm not into her most kids are. But the other picks have had their moments and this year was not their biggest.
Here are my additions.
David Plouffe - as one of the main campaign organizers for Obama he managed to help pull off one of the most historic victories the U.S. has ever seen. His online organization was phenomenal.
How about Hillary Clinton? She certainly made some history this year. Besides coming so close to being the presidential nominee for a major party, she is slated to become Secretary of State. She would be the first former First Lady to become a U.S. senator and a Secretary of State.
Steve Jobs also comes to mind. Besides all our recent economic woes, Apple has done some interesting things this year with the new iPhone 3G, iTouch, the latest versions of the iPod Nano. The telecommunications industry and the music industry continue to be greatly impacted by Apple.
As the president of the Beijing Olympic Organizing Committee, Liu Qi had a herculean task. Putting the 2008 Olympics together is worth an interview. It might be tough getting him to respond to the good, the bad and the ugly, but that used to be Barbara Walters specialty.
Miley Cyrus scares me. She
Miley Cyrus scares me. She freaks me out. And she earned Disney 1 BILLION DOLLARS?! She's such a freak. As is Disney for allowing children into fame. I think this bothers me more than the photo, although the fact her parents were present for the shoot is a good indication of why this kid scares me. It's just weird.
Regardless of how I feel about Cyrus, though, making that much money in just one year at her age is no doubt going to get you on this list.
