Australian soap character Charlie Buckton prepares to come out

This week, Australia's Herald Sun reported that Home and Away soap star Esther Anderson would be playing a lesbian next year. Apparently, her character, Charlie Buckton, is about to come out.

I don't know much about the Aussie soap, so I looked up Charlie Buckton's official profile on Home and Away to see if I could flesh out any hints that she might be a lesbian. It only took three seconds before my gaydar was going haywire.

These are all direct quotes. Charlie Buckton is:

25, and has never been in love.

highly ambitious and is quite the perfectionist in everything she does.

fit, passionate, highly educated.

attracting a lot of notice in her cop uniform.

Do you need more evidence that she's a big, big gaymo? OK, how about some pictures.

Buckton rocking the baseball cap:

Working the black tank top:

Playing stern in a uniform:

Enjoying a dyke-y sport:

Dorking around in a hoodie:

But StuntDouble, you're saying, you're lesbian profiling and exacerbating stereotypes!

Yes, I am, and I rest my case.

I never got into that soap

I never got into that soap even when I was living over there, but thanks for the info. THIS would definitely make me tune in. Well, also depending on how they are handling things. How can anyone resist a gorgeous lady in a uniform? especially the ones that come with handcuffs :P

God StuntDouble you are funny and I love reading your articles.

    OH YES!!!!!!!!

Okay I actually nearly broke my computer chair from jumping up and down

I have looooved her since she first came on a couple of weeks ago, she is super hot in that uniform. But isn't she supposed to be in a relationship with Roman, so mmmm? how will that work?

Right I knw a lot about home and away, I'm an Irish student it's a rite of passage at half one everyday!!!

I thought about 6 or so

I thought about 6 or so years ago there was a girl who was a main character (can't remember her name, but she had red hair and was a bit of a "wild child"), came out and then promptly left the show.

Did that actually happen or did I make the whole thing up?

    I think you are talking

I think you are talking about Gypsy, she was attracted to Shelly (Kirsty's mother) and she kissed another woman but soon after she got pregnant with Will's child and the left the show together.

In the mid to late nineties there was a lesbian relationship involving a student (played by Isla Fischer) and teacher, which amazingly ended with the couple leaving the bay together.

    broohaha's picture

Yeah! Gypsy was the one I

Yeah! Gypsy was the one I was thinking of. Thank you!

    Shannon (Isla Fisher)

I totally know what you mean, something happened with Shannon, she started wearing dungerees and cried in some womans trailor and then ran away to Paris with her, I was too young to cop it at the time but thinking about it now, it really does seem like they gayed her up! I hope someone knows what I'm talking about!!!

If she gets a girlfriend, I hope its Martha, she's a hottie!!!

    Mandy & Shannon

Mandy was Shannon's teacher when she first came to the bay, Mandy had a girlfriend, when she returned the second time as a published author there was lots of sexual tension but Shannon had a boyfriend so they decided to stay friends. The third time Mandy came to the bay both were single and as previously mention Shannon cried in Mandy's trailor and they ran away to Paris.

I remember Shannon and Mandy clearly

I used to have it on tape, i was desperate for any gayness i could find!

Shannon (Isla Fisher, Wedding Crashes etc) and Mandy (Rachael Blake, Lantana, TV's Wildside and she did voiceovers for SBS for years).

The whole storyline was ridiculous.  Shannon was still with that tall guy (lachie?) he proposed and she kept putting him off and he didn't know why and then he figured it out.....  Because he saw Mandy one afternoon wearing some "political cartoon" t-shirt and then 1st thing the next morning he ran into Shannon wearing the same t-shirt!

Not once were the words gay or lesbian mentioned, Pippa (Shannons foster mum)told someone that she had concerns over Shannon spending time with Mandy, because she was "a woman of the world who had many different experiences".

Mandy said Shannon was her muse.  They bonded over both being writers.

After the tall guy confronted Shannon about his proposal he warbled on about the T-shirts and said he know new why she turned him down etc.

Selena (Shannons best friend) confronted her about it also and said she didn't understand why she would not want to marry the Tall guy and run off to Paris with that weird woman.  I can't remember Shannon's reply unfortunately, i think it was something along the lines of wanting to see the world and wanting to be around Mandy.  I don't believe there was any mention of being in love, but perhaps that she loved her.  Selena and Shannon made up before she left.

I might see if i can find the tape!

    I love H&A

Its the only soap i watch and in the 20 years its been on the air none of the main characters have been gay. The question is though if she is gay who will they set her up with cos as everyone knows in home and away land you can't be under 30 and single for very long!
    babyface30's picture

    Your wrong

No, none have been completely gay, but Shannon was confirmed as bisexual when she fell in love with the lesbian writer in the 90's. Of course you may have blinked and missed it because ITV cut the storyline to bits and then she left right after coming out, I can't remember if she left with the writer or not though. Then there was Gypsy who was bi-curious for about 2 minutes, okay that doesn't really count but they have ventured (sort of) into these waters before, just not very well. If this is true, then I hope they follow Out Of The Blue's lead and give her a positive relationship, obviously it would be without PDA's as it's daytime and OOTB doesn't have any.
    overmyhead's picture

    Your Right

I actually remember the shannon story now but only vaguely! also remember the thing with gypsy when she kissed shelley i think she was getting counselling from her at the time. Pippa's son michael was gay when he was on the show for like 2 episodes a few years ago, also mathilda went out with a guy who was gay and lucas outed him! Its all coming back to me now!
    babyface30's picture

    Double post

Well this might actually get me watching the show again, because I stopped when Sally left. Plus the character/actress is hot as hell lol

I still love my Aussie soaps and she's a hottie! I wonder who she will like in it :/ my guess is Leah, just because i like her too :P i'm sorta fond of Kirsty also.

    This brings back the memories

When I was wee we'd go to Scotland every other summer to stay with family, and I'd always get into this soap.  Good to see more out characters in soaps worldwide.

    Yes.

I have nothing to add other than "Dorking around in a hoodie" FTW.

    Charlie and Martha

That would be really funny considering the whole thing between Jack, Martha and Roman.  But it'd be cool.
    crazychets's picture

i used to watch this religiously

then it changed times and channel and I am hardly home to see it these days, but it would be great if they brought in another lesbian character rather than have one of the current female characters have a "lesbian phase" it just seems like lots of shows are doing this type of storyline and just thinking how many times can we see this happen? can't we have a story like peta and poppy in out of the blue? an establised couple or at least established gay characters.

suppose will have to see which way it pans out....

This has made my day. Charlie is well HOT!

i hope this is true! since i watch H&W. This is what the show needs! n plus charlie is hot!!

    omg!

i'm stoked! lets hope these rumours are true seeing as I love H&A & charlie is like one of my fave characters! I'm wondering who they'll hook her up with though.. if it'll be a regular or a guest character? Hmm.. shall be interesting to see but I cannot wait!! :D
    oscartg's picture

Also long as its not Martha

Also long as its not Martha or Leah. Both of them really get on my last nerve, more than Charlie herself does.
    oscartg's picture

    Home and Away.

I have to confess I still regularly watch Home and Away, I love the dumb little fluffy soap. It used to be that I was more a fan of Neighbours but now I prefer Home and Away.  Mind you I'm not a fan of Charlie, obsessing over Roman and generally being a controlling bitch. I guess she's improved slightly from the start, when she was horrid to her father, Morag and Ruby. During the whole internet chat business I was thinking it would be Ruby that would be gay out of that family.

I have a question to regular H&A viewers, I missed why she is staying with Leah. I know people in H&A just randomly move in with each other all the time but when she was looking for a place for her and Ross to stay why she didn't have her own place to begin with. I guess they are low on sets because I can't see why Morag would need to live with Roman and the brats(Nicole and Aiden).

I've watched a few eps at Oz pace and I love psycho Melody. I'm waiting for a giant bitch fight between her and Nicole.

BTW - Who hates Martha, I have to turn the channel over as soon as I see her dumb horsey mouth on my screen. Cannot stand.

    CailinBainne's picture

    Oh no

I like Martha, she used to annoy but there's something cute about her big horsey mouth!! I can't remember her moving in with Leah, but the story line moves so fast in home and away that if you miss an episode someone has usually died or gotten married.

I wouldn't be getting all ye're little lesbian hearts up that there's going to be some long term relationship because knowing home and away it'll be all over in a few episodes....

    oscartg's picture

    Martha

I know, right. This storyline will last a week at most. You all recall the Shannon plotline. I don't even remember Gypsy because well I wasn't watching the show at that time.

I hate to say it but Geoff/Nicole are my favourite Home and Away couple.

I used to like Martha when she wasn't with Jack and whinying. Remember she was kinda dykey when she first arrived, she was a electrician and all. Now she works as a bar maid and is married to the tool of the known world, Jack Holden. I think Martha went downhill for me when she first married Jack and then became the most annoying clingy wife in human history. She had a total personality transplant overnight. Then she got her teeth done and became part horse.

    CailinBainne's picture

    Haha

Anyone with Geoff annoys me, that boy is irritating with his dopey look on him all the time. I love the way you hate Martha so much that's so funny, you're so passionate about it!!!!! They just keep throwing every single story line at Martha it's unbelievable, she was a stripper there for a while too!! I can't believe I know so much about home and away this is crazy, I really have to stop skipping lectures to watch it!!
    oscartg's picture

    I loved how she couldn't

I loved how she couldn't just be pregnant but pregnant to a unkown father and have cancer at the same time. The best was Cassie having HIV and being pregnant as well. Class. Martha gets too many storyline, I almost felt sorry for her when everyone was on their high horse about her being a stripper but then she started to annoy me.

    mynamehere's picture

    This should be interesting

This should be interesting to see how they handle the story but knowing home and away it'll be over before it begins!

i agree with you oscartg martha is so annoying! i don't think i've ever watched a show in which a character gets a terminal illness and i actually hope they die! ha that makes me sound so bad but for some reason i can't stand her!

    oscartg's picture

But she won't die, she will

But she won't die, she will linger on and on and on. Just so more horrible things can befall her. I can't believe that Roman is supposed to be still in love with that horse faced irritant.

    SuggestedName11's picture

    Yay Charlie

I don't really watch H+A unless my crazy aunt bribes me with food, but I always had my eye on Charlie. Who doesn't love a hot cop?

I wonder if this will cause as much of a fuss as when Skye kissed that American chick on Neighbours? My grandma stopped watching because of that storyline.

As for Martha (eugh), I thought the actress playing her had left the show? Maybe I'm thinking of someone else. Or just wishful thinking.

    eve_jig_it's picture

    Charlie maybe gay, yay

This might sound sad, but I do actually watch Home & Away avidly, and have done since Neighbours moved to Channel 5. If Neighbours had remained on BBC1, then I probably wouldn’t have bothered watching it again.

If this news about Charlie becoming gay next year becomes true, then 2009 is going to be a great ‘soap year’ for me indeed.

The character that she plays doesn’t have such a desirable personality but the actual actress who plays the character of Charlie Buckton is an absolute HOTTIE. She’s got lovely red hair, a gorgeous face with a nice bone structure, and well, did I mention she was gorgeous.

If they do make her character a ‘coming out’ lesbian and handle the story line in a good way, then I’m going to be smiling from Monday through to Friday next year.

    oscartg's picture

    Is Charlie going to date

Is Charlie going to date the new female cop that seems to be on screen alot these days? I'm glad that Charlie didn't hesitate to go with the evidence that Angelo killed Jack and set his dumb ass up. Jack was right after all. I'm hoping that he's going to be out of the show soon.

Oh by the way can someone slap Belle because she's really getting on my last nerve at the moment. I find her more irritating than Martha at this point and thats saying something.

I'm pretty sure the actress who plays Charlie is also in a Jim Beam advert playing a lesbian. She is gorgeous!

    ITA - maybe about a 6 or 7

ITA - maybe about a 6 or 7 year age difference between them (20-27ish).

Could be an intersting story line, but what is it with H&A and lesbian story lines.  Seems to me the last one was Shannon (Isla Fisher) and Mandy way, way, back in the early 90's.  Mandy was a lot older then Shannon.  I know sopies like recycling old storyliens but serioulsy....

    Front page of our newspaper???

im all for lesbians being brought into the show.. (i dont watch it though)

BUT today this made the front page of our paper in Mebourne!? The heading was something like "channel 7 is shocking fans with a lesbian romance" or something like that.. it was sooo frustrating! i mean there are so many bad things and more important things happening in the world rather then a new lesbian romance! WHY did it make the newspaper.. arg!

    yay for them though!

    Front page news

Whoa, slow news day today I guess... but lesbianism must sell papers, cos for a while there that whole Ruby Rose/Veronicas thing was front page every day at the Tele. I mean, the Tele is a sad excuse for a newspaper, but still.

I posted this in another thread today, but the Herald ran an article about the upcoming relationship, or whatever it will be, too. http://www.news.com.au/heraldsun/story/0,21985,25168796-5006022,00.html It's a bit sad our only lesbian characters are now on Home and Away, but I think that says more about the state of Aussie television than the lack of representation.

Bit sad that its front page news in a Melbourne paper. I was suprised when i saw it this morning, of course there is nothing better to write about, why not write about family groups being outraged!
