"Alice in Wonderland" gets made trippy by Tim Burton

No longer content to haunt only your Christmas nightmares, Tim Burton is bringing Alice in Wonderland to the big screen next March, in some intensely mind-frakking 3D glory. The story is a sequel to Alice's original adventure, one in which she flees an unwanted marriage proposal by following a white rabbit down a hole to Wonderland. Only, she doesn't remember the drug-fueled nap dream that got her there the first time, 10 years earlier.

USA Today unveiled the first character images and concept art this morning, and yes, Alice has been Burton-ized.

Anne Hathaway plays The White Queen, who, in terms of literary motif in Lewis Carroll's Through the Looking-Glass, is sort of the chess queen protagonist — but who, for the purposes of this post, we're just going to call "crazy hot," even all frosted over like this.

Helena Bonham Carter is The Red Queen, because who else are you going to cast to play trippy royalty with a penchant for chopping off little kids' heads?

Johnny Depp is the Mad Hatter. (I know he looks like Elijah Wood here, but it's really Depp.) This is his seventh collaboration with Burton, playing a character he calls "off his rocker." Because Sweeney Todd and Edward Scissorhands and Willy Wonka and Captain Jack Sparrow were so normal, I guess.

The rest of Alice in Wonderland's cast is just as stellar, even though we haven't seen photos yet. Alan Rickman is The Caterpillar; Stephen Fry, The Cheshire Cat; Crispin Glover, The Knave of Hearts; and Michael Sheen, The White Rabbit.

Alice is played by relative newcomer Mia Wasikowska, whose credits so far include one season of In Treatment.

At 30, I haven't recovered from the boat ride in the original Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. 25 years later and I sometimes still wake up shouting, "Hey Wonka, I want off!" to the tune of There's no earthly way of knowing/which direction we are going/is it raining, is it snowing/is the grizzly reaper mowing/are the fires of hell a blowing.

So, here's to another generation of kids being emotionally scarred by the movie adaptation of an innocuous, child-friendly book.

What do you think about the newly-imagined Alice in Wonderland? (I, for one, am all in.)

hasn't wonderland *always* been kind of creepy?

this sounds phenomenal. the cast alone is amazing, and i will see anything tim burton touches.

    That's what I was thinking...

CREEPY is Alice in Wonderland...and Through the Looking Glass.  I was in an adaption of both back in 8th grade...as a creepy tortoise...heh.  A Tim Burton film of this will be delicious...especially with Anne Hathaway!
    Animadi's picture

    Yep!

    Wonderland has always been creepy!
    tated's picture

    always been creepy

I seem to remember a black and white film adaptation involving a dragon... Alice jumps through the looking glass back into her living room at the end, yelling "I don't believe in you!  I don't believe in you!" until it goes away.  Nail-biter!

The only version that wasn't creepy was the Disney version.  But we did get a bodacious version of The Walrus and the Carpenter out of that one, so I'm satisfied.

    dr_tinkywinky's picture

    And trippy

the whole thing was conceived by Lewis Carroll while he was (reputedly) as high as a kite.  It won't 'get trippy' under Burton; it always *was* trippy! So maybe folks will finally learn that this ain't no kids story!

Be alert.  The world needs more lerts.

    EggFace's picture

    too true

it's like charlie and the chocolate factory; people say johnny depp was creepy? gene wilder scared me so badly as a kid!
    they call me kris's picture

So yeah - I'm a total 'Alice' nerd.

Lewis Carroll was actually a penname for Charles Dodgson, a brilliant mathmatician.  To severely summarize his motivations for writing - he was tired of everything working out logically, so decided to write utter nonsense.  So that's exactly what he did.

I am so excited about this movie, as I have every book version of 'Alice' I can find, and have seen nearly every 'Alice' movie.  They're all strange, and that's what makes them so magically wonderful.  Can't wait to see Burton's spin, and the CAST!  [gasp]

     "This is gonna be amazing."

    I agree.

    He can do no wrong.

Plus, I'm pretty sure success is inevitable with this one. Not only Carter and Depp, who are amazing as a duo, but adding Hathaway? My brain mind just explode from awesome-ness.

And, wow, that picture of Depp as the Mad Hatter is nightmare-worthy, haha.

    EggFace's picture

    right there with you...now

    right there with you...

now i'm gonna have to go find some anne hathaway movie so my brain can get over depp's fantastically awful makeover.

The 3-D Alice In Wonderland Will Be One Hell Of A Ride

to get on.  I'm all in too. I wonder if 3-D glasses will be given out?

One of the biggest fans of Alice in Wonderland, I'm so glad Burton is making it a completely different visual medium  to watch .  I'm big fan of Burton anyway. It is one of two reasons I'm watching it; The other b/c Depp is in it.  It's going to be a darker version of the oh light-hearted story. OOOOh. Love the whole concept. I know I got to wait for next March. I will defintely will be waiting.

I knew you AE would pick up this story. Rock on!

Oh yeah, I'm buying all the posters of AIW when it comes out.  The one with Helena Bonham Carter, of the Queen,my favorite character, is tight.  I will be buying everything of new Burton's version of  AIW . Yeah that's the dork kid in me coming out.

    carmbridge's picture

    I'm excited!

And not just b/c of that photo of Anne Hathaway
    alex's picture

    terrifying! and awesome.

tim burton is a genius. im crossing my fingers that this lives up to the hype, because it sounds absolutely ridiculous. johnny depp rarely disappoints, helena bonham carter is easily the best crazy chick EVER, and anne hathaway and alan rickman? could this get any better??

oh, and completely off topic, but just saw this awesome mashup of buffy vs. edward cullen, which totally captures why robert pattinson is absolutely awful / twilight is absolute crap. love it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RZwM3GvaTRM

    My thoughts exactly

I'll watch everything with a Tim Burton stamp on it.

Plus, what's better than an Alice acid trip without the drugs?

    Lilyily's picture

    Love it!!

Can't wait!! Johnny Depp is a favorite of Tim Burton of course. I love all his art directions, It's all great!
    Bekkah's picture

    i'm gonna keep my

i'm gonna keep my expectations low. not because i don't have faith in burton, depp, hathaway....ok, the whole damn cast and crew, but because i want to be completely floored by this when it comes out.

that being said, OMG. i cannot WAIT for this to come out.

    Vaya's picture

    This looks so frakking cool,

This looks so frakking cool, but what else can be expected from Burton? Love Helena Bonham Carter, she looks perfect for the Red Queen. Hathaway as White Queen looks like Her Royal Hotness to me.

    Whoa!!

The makeup and costumes and cast look sooooo fantastic!! I love Tim Burton!
    7Up's picture

    Cool!

Yeah I always found Alice in Wonderland very disturbing, so it makes sense to see a Tim Burton version, however I could even see a Christopher Nolan version which would be grittier and even darker more twisted and not semi comical.

Ha ha, Jonny Depp as Elijah Woods playing The Mad Hatter should get an Oscar for that role!

    Nona J.'s picture

    Can't Wait!

I'm a huge Tim Burton fan. I can't wait to see this movie. These characters definitely look out of this world. I'm so excited!

    YESS!!!

Johnny, Helena, and Alan already proved how amazing they are in Sweeney Todd. Mia looks promising and I know Crispin as the creepy thin man from Charlies Angels. Burton's spin on Wonderland (which was already bizarre) looks spectacular and he's a genius! Cannot wait!!
    LoveKats's picture

    AHHHHHHHH!

    *EXCITEMENT*

Johnny Depp looks absolutely fantastic! Although... maybe they should've dyed Anne Hathaway's eyebrows... although Im sure most people don't care. I mean, it is Anne Hathaway ;)

    TehMorp's picture

    I theorize that they didn't

I theorize that they didn't simply because people look weird when their eyebrows are the same color as their skin.
    ackat's picture

    Can't wait

    Oh that looks awesome!
    Penny Winterr's picture

    I'm very excited!

This looks like it's going to be phenomenal, at least visually.  I thought Mia Wasikowska was terrific in In Treatment.

Of course when I read her name the first thing I thought of was Boo's voice saying, "Mike Wazowski!"

    Cherry Vegas's picture

    Awesome!

I'm so excited for this movie to come out!

    Anne Hathaway looks soooo

    Anne Hathaway looks soooo hot!
    erroneousfuss's picture

    Heck yes

The cast looks amazing! That, and Burton works best with "creepy"... which is definitely what Alice in Wonderland is.

I wonder if it'll be nearly as creepy as Jan Svankmajer's 1988 film adaptation (titled simply "Alice").

    captainlex's picture

Can't wait to see HBC and

Can't wait to see HBC and Johnny Depp working together again..should be brilliant, as per ushe. :]

    love Tim burton

I've always loved Tim Burton films. This movie looks great already. just from seeing the cast in their roles.. its going to be amazing.. cant wait!!!!
    s a r a h's picture

    i think tim burton is

i think tim burton is amazing at what he does, but i am worried johnny depp wont be able to come up with a unique enough character. i used to love him. Now i feel his acting is meshing into a one dimentional freak show of a character.

i am still wickedly excited for helena!! that woman is perfection. weird/creepy/pretty perfection.

    erroneousfuss's picture

    agreed

I have the same fear as you. Luckily, though, it looks like there will be plenty of other strange characters to make up for any recycling Depp character tendancies. And Helena Bonham Carter is a goddess of the acting world. Love her!

    Mia Wasikowska

I loved Mia in In Treatment-- she is fantastically talented. Looking forward to the movie.
