News, Reviews & Commentary on Lesbian and Bisexual women in Entertainment and the Media

A drug-dealing gay woman leads a new Glasgow television series

There's a new drug-dealing lesbian sociopath in town, and this time she's Scottish. After positive reviews from several focus groups, Glasgow's Bad Pony Media has just greenlit nine episodes of a racy, hour-long crime drama, Ninety Eight Percent, which stars Emma Ashby as Casey Spencer, the head of the Spencer crime family.

The press release for Ninety Eight Percent sums it up like this:

Its no-holds barred attitude and fast paced shooting style make it sure to be a viral video hit around the world. The series will be “exciting and entertaining”, and “like nothing you have ever seen before” promises Executive Producer/Director Frank McGowan. With nine one-hour long episodes planned for its first season, the budget for each action packed episode is £30,000 — a mere drop in the ocean compared to a typical £400,000 per same produced for just regular television.

That's fine and all, but I think the teaser poster says it better:

Yes, you read that review in red correctly: "Some dirty lesbian shagging slagging off your own mother?"

I've watched the pilot, and it sort of feels like Weeds meets Westside Story meets the camera person who filmed The Blair Witch Project.

For now, the show is only going to be available online. You can watch the first part of the pilot here and then link through for the rest of the episode. (Scroll to the bottom for the video.) The language is NSFW. Oh, also the first three minutes of lesbian shagging are also NSFW. Seriously, the heavy breathing isn't something you want blaring on your work computer.

Are you into watching Emma Ashbey, the Scottish drug-dealing lesbian sociopath, navigate the streets of Glasgow?

    Whoops!

I absolutely meant to type "slagging." Shows where my mind is today, eh? Sorry!

    2 out of 3

I was ok with Weeds meets Westside Story, but the Blair Witch camera person might deter me.

    Slagging

It says slagging, not shagging. Slagging means "to criticize, disparage, or insult" (from http://www.yourdictionary.com/slagging). Although it sounds pretty strange in both contexts...

    Also

This sounds neat. British T.V. FTW with lesbian programming!

Slagging off and shagging are not the same thing

There's a big difference between someone insulting your mother and someone getting frisky with your mother.

Oh dear, this could be so

Oh dear, this could be so much better if they didn't actualy use the way Glasweigens actualy speak. I guess anyone watching from outside Scotland would probably need a translation on the whole episode!

I know this is supposed to

I know this is supposed to be suspenseful and dramatic, but all i can do is laugh. i'm finding it hilarious. The existentialism in a Glaswegian accent, the hard ned family from down the road, the insane trashy ex-girlfriend who quotes Cosmo. The fact i went to school with the guy who plays 'the poof' and seeing him in this is completely random.

    Though not the best representation of lesbians, lmao off at the old neighbour;

'Can, you keep the noise down? You're a disgrace to the neighbourhood!'

Casey, Chelsy and Jenny 'Fuck Off!'

    Neighbour '......lesbians'

I feel sorry for anyone who isn't Scottish trying to understand it, maybe they'll put subtitles on it later like they do with Deadliest Catch.....

    Greylin's picture

    that's funny

Good to get your perspective on it.

Totally not my thing because the blairwitch shots are horrors to my headache.  It would be a lot more interesting with smooth, bucolic cinematogrphy to offset the grit.

    distracted laughing

Yea, I got pretty distracted laughing by the bad dancing at the start, the goofy music, and the Blair Witch camerawork.  Based on these things, I'm also anticipating that a fair amount of the acting is quite bad, but I can't really tell with the accent and all.
    grandma's picture

    oh god.

this show looks like a high school film class project. and i don't think i've seen writing or acting the bad since the l word. maybe chaiken moved to scotland.

    They've used nearly every

They've used nearly every Glaswegian cliche in the book except deep-fried Mars Bars!

I actually quite enjoyed that; yes, it's a bit amateurish, but it was made on a shoestring budget, and I think the wobbly/odd camera works with the gritty setting. We should welcome an independent British drama that centres on a lesbian character, albeit psychotic.

I liked it and would watch the series if it was broadcast.

    haha. it looks really bad.

    Oh dear

I see that apparently everybody's white in Scotland.
    kate's picture

i live in an area of

i live in an area of Scotland that is apparently 0.03% ethnic and yet my flatmate can be found to comment on the 'diversity' of the city, because where he is from it's even less.

The story focuses around 3 families who are settled in the area, so, the parents are white and therefore the children are white....

    I shall definitely watching this.

Well, as long as it isn't as bad as River City...
    HoldingTheArtistHostage's picture

Well I'm Scottish and near Glasgow so..

I will definately be watching lol cause there aint that many Scottish lesbians on tv or many good shows where Scotland is the setting..

"I guess what I'm trying to say is that I did get the joke about the toaster oven...."

    I'm proud.

Can't wait for this, it's gonna be great.

    bugle_boi's picture

i have no idea what's going

i have no idea what's going on because of the accents, the cinematography looks cheap and badly done, the acting isn't that great either, and the stabbing in the first 5 minutes and the thing with the rats (wtf?) did nothing but make me laugh REALLY HARD.

but damn was that opening sequence hot. :DDDD

    .★.Matt The Rock$tar.★.'s picture

    Seems cheesy! I like lol!

I need a good laugh. Trainwrecks are my favorites!

The boi in the AE get up with the low cut is so cute btw : D

Matt's world you just live in it!

    whose idea was it first?

So, who had the idea for a lesbian crime boss first, Michelle Martin or Ali Vali? Ali Vali's "Devil" series (which is based around the Casey family headed by Cain Casey) is quite good and I enjoy reading it (anxiously awaiting the next in the series...). Is this the same Michelle Martin who wrote Pembroke Park? I really liked that one too.

Haven't watched the show yet, will try to make time to do so tonight.

    I like that opening scene,

I like that opening scene, including the music. Very Shexy B)

Im from Scotland, and i can tell you, that there isnt alot of ethnics, esp in my area (virtually zilch!). Yes, there are more in Glasgow, but if its based on typical residents then the cast will mainly be white :/

The accents id no problem understanding. Im used to the weedgies. However, i would like to point out that, alot of people have trouble understanding it because there has just never been alot of scottish tv shows broadcasted. Very little in the UK infact, nevermind the rest of the world! Day to day i hear a variety of accents on tv, varying from cockney, to the deep south, but yep, i can deal with that, im used to it. Give it a chance eh? :) Youll all be quoting 'baw bag' by the end of it.

Hoping to see the rest of the show availible online in the near future! I think, as a rule, every episode should open like that....
