Queen Sophie-Ann makes her debut on "True Blood"

The moment we had all been waiting for finally happened last night: Evan Rachel Wood brought her dark sex appeal to True Blood. I might get burned at the stake or torn into by maenads for saying this, but what they did with Sophie-Ann Queen of the Vampires was a Snorefest from Snoozerville.

Evan really wasn’t given a lot to work with but before I get to the bad stuff, the one thing they did right was make her sexy. If Sophie-Ann wanted to take a chug of femoral blood from me, I’d tell her to sharpen her teeth and put on her best bedazzled bib.

It’s a shame, but sexiness couldn’t save the lame storyline they gave to her character this episode.

First, I must ask, of all games to play, why Yahtzee? It has to be one of the most boring games to ever be played, especially for someone with the brains of a vampire. I mean, if I’m Queen of the Vampires, I’d want everyone to know how smart and powerful I am. I wouldn’t want to play anything other than Boggle, Trivial Pursuit and Jeopardy (because Alex Trebek is dead sexy).

Second, I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: Vampire Bill is one of my least favorite characters because there is no actual conversation to be had. It’s all “Sookie” this and “Sookie” that.

Sophie-Ann says she could care less about Sookie, Maryann and anything else happening in Bon Temps and I don’t blame her. She’s got a sweet (if not totally gaudy) palace filled with good-looking mortals to occupy her time.

The queen's current interest, Hadley

Bill won’t shut up about having to get back to his Sookie. Get over it, have some B negative and enjoy yourself. Take one down, pass it around Bill!

At this point, I find Eric sexier than Bill and infinitely more interesting. He needs to up his game and get his pimp limp back in motion. Bill Compton is a one-suck-wonder and if I were Sophie-Ann I would’ve given him the information he wanted and told him to just send a text message next time.

I know Sophie-Ann is more bisexual than gay in the books, but I got the full-on lesbian vibe from her in this episode. (She says she hasn’t enjoyed sex with a man since the Eisenhower era — that’s the first clue.)

Luckily, the next episode looks way more intense and interesting for Sophie-Ann’s character. I feel like we’re always in for a treat whenever Eric stops by. Judging by his affinity for Godrick, there’s more of a chance he’d sink his, ahem, teeth into a lucky cabana boy.

What did you think of last night’s episode? I know a lot of you have read the books — did Evan do a good job of taking on Sophie-Ann?

    Complex

Typically complex performance by ERW.  As usual it is hard to grasp on the first viewing as the woman has no interest in instant gratification.  Readings than come from comprehending the use of facial and body language which shifts from the overt to the subtle mattering on the moment.  As for yahtzee, that is an easy one.  Think song, decor, swim suit Hadley is wearing, gown ERW is wearing, etc.  If that doesn't help there is a reference to a President.  I see tenuous safety and exiled power and it has been that way for awhile.

    Hmmm

Boring storyline or not, Evan is hot. I was watching it with some friends who think I'm totally straight and they just stared at me whenever i got excited cz she was on-screen. :p And with the Eisenhower joke, i believe i was the only one who laughed but anw. :p I find ERW fascinating, ANYWHERE she plays.

    PS. HOPEFULLY, We'll get a little Sophie-Ann & Sookie action. :D

    It was Eh

I have to agree. I was watching and waiting for something awesome to happen but it really never came. And the attempt to make Sophie Anne the sexy lunatic she was made out to be kind of fell flat for me. ERW is great but it was kind of like, what the hell is the point of this????

It felt like a cheap rip off of the truly insane badass Drusilla.

But I have hope for next week, and further, for next season. Bring on the crazy.

    sucked dry

Evan on the screen was so hot. Yes she didn't do much but I think that was the point of her character, to just be amazingly hot and surrounded by luxury in this palace. I was so happy they added her onto the show, total lesbian vibe...until the scenes from next week, fucking Eric? I guess it was too good to be true.

I don't think that she is going to be having sex with Eric. I think she is trying to convince him to do something for her. Besides her character is supposed to be very sexual without necessarily having sex.

    Loved it!

I thought she did an excellent job...ERW is sexy as hell & played up the whole episode.  Its clear shes pansexual but she definitely leans towards the ladies; True Blood is so entertaining & fresh, I love it!  I hope we get to see a lot more of her.
    greentara313's picture

    I agree

She said to Bill what I have been saying for awhile now. "Why don't you and Eric just f**k and get it over with already. I'll watch." Lol. I thought that that was so funny because it was almost verbatim what I had been saying for the past several episodes.

    I'm with Hornito on this

Dullsville.  I thought ERW was wasted.  She had nothing to do.  And Bill is totally boring.  Give me more Eric scenes.  He's so wicked--I love it.

I thought that perhaps Yahtzee was meant to be kitschy.  She's not striking me as being super sophisticated.  Saying something like "I haven't been with a man since the Eisenhower administration" is nothing compared to the likes of Godrick saying he's older than Jesus (I'm not recalling the exact line).  That was only 50 years ago.  Not much of a statement.

    Sophie-Ann

Had an alice in wonderland feel to her dialogue and absurd manerisms. She was classic sexy and mad as a hatter at the same time.  I can't tell if thats brilliant or horrible.

Either way, the next episode should be interesting.

I want to do bad things with Evan Rachel Wood

It was kind of a boring episode (like the last one) but I think Evan Rachel Wood did a good job. I haven't read the books but have been watching True Blood obsessively and I hope that they give her more a storyline in future episodes.
    Way2Gay's picture

    Sophie-Ann and Pam!

Is it too much to hope for the writers to get Pam and Sophie-Ann in the same room? Pam is already sorely underused, so what better to do than to give her a scene with the queen and let the sparks fly? Answer: Nothing. Those two together would melt the screen.

In any case, I do agree that ERW didn't have much to do in last night's episode, as her purpose was mostly to explicate. Nonetheless, ERW played Sophie-Ann with a subtle degree of menace, so I'm sure the character will develop in due time.

Hated this ep and ERW/SA development

Sorry, I was disappointed! Dude why the hell are we not getting any representation on TV?! I'm gonna get some lesbians on TV, even if it is only Tucson public access...geez

    I blame the director for

I blame the director for Evan's dull performance and not the actress. Also I think the Queen is one of those types who doesn't have to appear badass but has that hidden a bit. You can tell when she "insists" on something it is more of an order and you don't want to fuck with that. Alan has made quite a bit of fuck ups in this show but somewhat redeemed himself with the awesomeness that was the Godric storyline and FotS. He really needs to add more Eric, Pam, and Ginger. The ratings didn't go up for any other reason.

I feel like we’re always in for a treat whenever Eric stops by.

Welcome to the right side. Bill needs to go. I haven't read the books in full but I hear Bill is more interesting in them, but he really fucks up in a stupid way which I'm sure Alan won't include with how he loves Bill/Sookie and changing stuff around.

What? how is this even on

What? how is this even on the front page? I felt like I was reading someones livejournal rant about TB. Seriously, how do you expect to get the character development in one episode? Plus if anyone was expecting, I don't know, a respectful lesbian character or whatever, seriously? this is True Blood, they're vampires.
    Paraphase's picture

    I was a

I was a little disappointed at first. Sophie Ann is way more serious and sophisticated int the books. But after watching the scenes a second time it seemed like the writers were trying to make her seem like a bored self-indulgent monarch who was desperate for company and any kind of amusement. Looking at it from that perspective kind of explains the Yahtzee and made the scenes with her seem funnier. The queen was brought in too soon and now their fishing around figuring out what to do with her. ERW did a good job. I can't imagine anyone else playing the queen. I have hope for future episodes. This episode was all-around the worst episode this season so maybe she was just introduced at the wrong time.

    giapops's picture

    Epic Fail

Horrible acting. They should've chosen someone who can act and is sexier (Aishwarya Rai, Charlize Theron, Patricia Velasquez (bisexual), Bai Ling (just kidding, but not really).

    True Blood...

..Completely sucks, no pun intended, however, I was drawn back when Evan was going to play a lesbian, er, demoted to bisexual vampire queen and as long as there was going to be some girl/girl action my heart was all aflutter. But there was hardly any this episode and it is looking really bad for next episode when the other stupid, uninteresting vampire stops by the Queen's mansion. I mean I would hardly call her bi or lesbian even though she seemed a lot more lesbian than bi but really, she was just flat sexual and fine by me. At least Evan is hot, really hot, and her character was funny enough and well-acted enough to add the much-needed zest this show craves. I thought that one way to destroy a maenad was for the queen of the vampires to have sex with her? Probably not but I always have high hopes. Otherwise we're stuck with a vampire queen who is sexual, says she hasn't enjoyed sex with men since the Eisenhower administration, and those writers better not screw that up too by giving us a little hope and then snatching it away and making us watch her have a scene with that pathetic loser Eric. And if so, no more True Blood for me because the idiocity of the show makes me kind of queasy.

    Lucylex's picture

    Oh Evan!!

Evan Rachel Wood was fantastic, her storyline was a little lame, but very good to say the least.  I hope her character comes back, but with a better storyline.  Yes, bill is getting boring, every other word out of his mouth is 'Sookie', but i still stay tuned.  Home ERW comes back on sometime in the future.
    watching's picture

    This show is beginning to

This show is beginning to get overcrowded with black-eyed townsmen running around looking for orgasms and bloody thrills. For me the low point was the sheriff having to run to the toilet. Oh my! Poop! That should really entertain all the 10 year-old-boys watching.

The mary Ann story line has dragged on for too long and when that happens you just lose interest and stop getting scared. ERW is just more of same old same old vampire crap. An excuse for Bill to be out of town while Sookie once again winds up in a situation where she needs rescue.

The whole Vampire scene just didn't work. It was unclever and unfunny when it was meant to be both. EVR had to be embarrassed by the role she was given. Eileen Chaiken couldn't have done worse than the writers of True Blood who started out with a terrific series and carried it to caricature before the season was out.

    cakeordeath's picture

    She sucked...

...literally. Over the top hammy acting. But maybe it was the director because it seemed like everyone ramped up the hamminess for this episode. Ryan/Jason's scene in the truck was just awful.
    Letia Ledfoot's picture

    Maybe I'm wrong.

I haven't read the books so maybe someone can tell me if Vampire Bill is dead on. If in fact he evokes Steven Segal and says everything in the same tone.

I hate him. Only someone one-dimensional could say in the same I smoke twenty packs of cigarettes a day tone sentences that range from let's go have dinner to let's save the world.

    Watching True Blood

I live in Denmark and I use sidereel or ninjavideo to see whatever I want. True Blood season 1 is just starting up right now in Sweden and later this fall here in Denmark. I recommend these two sites to everyone abroad the states :-)

I love True Blood. I think it's filled with homosexual homofobic references.

    peewee's picture

    I expected

something completely different then what we saw. Like paraphrase said, she's much more sophisticated and serious in the books. Ball just made her so damn hokey. I went back to watch those scenes a second time, I wanted to enjoy them, but I just couldn't.

I'm six books in (6th book is where Sookie goes to New Orleans, meets the Queen, deals with Hadley, etc.). Reading the books has been a curse and a blessing as far as watching the show. While, I haven't expected Ball to really base the show off the books. He's done a fairly good job. I started reading after the first season, and the first book was so easy to get through because it was basically the first season. Big difference being Tara's s/l. The first half of this season was basically the second book Living Dead in Dallas. Big difference being Jason was in no way shape or form apart of the Fellowship, and again most things involving Tara. I'm surprised they stretched what little involvment (book wise) the maenad had. It's overkill, and I haven't talked to anyone who enjoys those fucking orgy scenes, or anything having to do with MaryAnne. Oh, and Bill isnt' even a main character after book 3. He's just there, sometimes. And, he isn't that exciting just as he in now. It's all about Sookie. As, the show should have been more geared towards.

My hopes for next season is more two-natured/supernatural creatures (weres, were-shifters, fairies, goblins, and especially witches), and Sookie with anyone but Bill.  I mean, if Ball will do it somewhat right.

    0jellyfish0's picture

    ERW

I've never read the books, but honestly I thought the problem was ERW herself, and not the way her character was written.  I mean, yes her story could have been a better, and she could have showed up for a larger part of the episode, but I think SHE was the real problem.  I really just don't think ERW is a great actress.  I loved her in Thirteen, but I was also 14 when I saw it, and I'm pretty sure she was basically just playing herself in it anyway.  ERW's acting skills start and stop at moody and depressed.  I think this causes people to think she's a good actress.  Like she's "deep" or something.  Guess again!  This characer calls for more than just sullenness and I think it's more than ERW can handle.
    Mesocyclone's picture

    hmmm...

...Not my favorite episode, but I'd be content to watch Evan Rachel Wood read the Wall Street Journal for an hour. Hot damn.

Am I the only sour cherry on the fruitstand?

    venus sans furs's picture

    A world of '...What?'

I'm pretty sure Sophie Ann's aloofness and generally disconnected-from-reality-ness (note the fake day time beach scene through the windows and taxidermied water fowl) was the point. I didn't find it boring, I found it interesting, her apathy (towards humans and demons and other paranormal creatures). It was refereshing to see a vampire not involving themselves in matters that don't directly concern them. Eric keeps claiming to be this kind of vampire, yet there he is, always in the middle. Everything else about the scene was just for the obsurd lolz. The 'tanning' in beach wear, the yahtzee, etc. I think you completely misunderstood the whole thing.

Also, Wood can't act and a majority of the imperfections in this scene could have been rectified and redeemed by better casting. I'd rather someone I liked play the show's first (only?)lesbian, but I really don't have any say in the manner.

    Juzzie's picture

    Sexy

I haven't seen this yet, but I know I'm going to like it-Boohaha What can I say, I have a thing for vampires
    Alexis's picture

I didn't like the scene either

I thought it was boring...it had so much promise, after last episode where they showed Bill walking into the queen's palace, but I think she was over the top with her performance.

I know a lot of people seem to love Eric and hate Bill, but for me it's the other way around. Eric just seems...sleazy. He doesn't seem at all like the kind of person who has been influenced by Godric, especially after this episode where he wanted to feed on Arlene's kids instead of helping them get their mom back. (Isn't the vampire sheriff supposed to do something about other supernatural beings preying on people and vampires in their area?)

Bill seems more like a real person, and I still think the scene in season one where he gets choked up while talking about his family and friends during his speech at the church...is one of the best scenes out of both seasons. Bill kind of got lost in the all the craziness this season, but I hope he's still one of the main characters in the third season.

    BiMyself's picture

See, that's why Eric is fun.

See, that's why Eric is fun. He's a vampire who eats people, he's not supposed to be a nice guy. I don't think his duties as a vampire sheriff would extend to protecting humans, since they have their own law enforcement. And Maryann hasn't threatened any vampires, so why would he care about the wellbeing of random townspeople?

Flying around, tricking people and threatening to eat children is just more entertaining than moping and whining "Sookiiieee" all day. That's why people like him better than Bill.

    Morgan S.M.'s picture

    You speak the truth

Pretty much. You also have to remember Eric is a couple thousand years old as well while Bill is only about 100, not to mention Godric wasnt always such a wonderful guy himself, by his own admission.
    Alexis's picture

    But...

Maryanne did hurt Bill (I know that's not a reason for Eric to care) and she tried to hurt Sookie (which IS a reason for Eric to care).

One of the things I don't understand is how, with just a few drops of Eric's blood, Sookie and Lafayette are having those dreams about him, but Sookie's fed on Bill's blood to "heal" and she's never had the same dreams about Bill.

Is that just because Eric is so much older than Bill?

Hmmmm I agree that, especially this season, Bill hasn't been doing much besides saying "Soookieee." lol. I think the writers need to give him more to do.

But in the first season, the writers did so much to humanize Bill and tell his backstory, I think it would be a shame if they keep neglecting his character. And I want the old Lafayette back!

    Llewella's picture

I'm so glad that so many

I'm so glad that so many people have commented on how sexy Eric and Pam are, I didn't realise there was so much hatred of Bill going round. But sure enough I can't wait to see how Eric and Sophie-Ann interact. I thought she was mean't to be overplayed and over the top, the entire mise en scene suggested it. Did I just sound like a wanker? Sorry. Just really enjoy the different rides this show takes me on looking forward to more. ERW best actress in the world? No, but Ryan has hardly come that far from Home and Away... ah Vinne. What was my point... I liked the episode:)
    BiMyself's picture

    YAY, finally!

I've never been a fan of ERW's acting, and found her very one-note and shrill ("I HATE YOU DAD!") in the Wrestler. She bothered me a bit here too. I can't get over her hammy, artificial delivery. It wasn't entirely her fault though, since she spent most of the episode spewing out awkward exposition. Hopefully the writing and characterization will even out if she stays on the show. She did look smoking HOT though, so no complaints on that front.

And add me to the mountain of people who find Eric and Pam infinitely sexier and more entertaining than Bill and Sookie. I loved their scene in the bar in this episode, where he had a shark gray suit and she had a red sequined jumpsuit and a crazy curly perm. They're both so hot and fabulous!

    SapphicDay's picture

    Hardly a Snorefest From Snoozeville

What did you expect? the depraved non-stop sexual activity that Ilene used to pander to her male heterosexual viewers?

Hmmm, maybe Alan Ball had his writing team stick to the premise instead of devoting inordinant and copius amounts of time to sex. However given your screen name I am sure you were disappointed.

Still, E. Rachel Wood 's storyline wasn't lame as she exuded an urbane mix sexiness and lethality, while adhering to the limited on-screen time alloted her. If you are going to indict the series or Woods for not meeting your standards then specify the manner  in which those standards weren't met.  Or, are you afraid to do so out of fear of appearing preposterous for your expectations? Be clear.Given the debacle that was the series finale of the L Word, Alan Ball has a long way to go before he turns True Blood into a snoozefest.

Finally Eric has always been sexier than Cowboy..er I mean Vampire Bill whose attractiveness stems from his ability to commit to Sookie (evidenced by his constant references to her), so for me there is no: "At This Point."

The season finale is going to be good, I'm looking for to it.

Technology Will Lead To The Demise Of Civilization As We Know It.

Where was the steamy love scene with Queen Sophie and Hadley???  Woods, Ball, even Anna mentioned it and there was no such scene.  Liked the finale, but was disappointed by the character of the Queeen, boring!  Yahtzee, come on, fucking Yahtzee for two episodes!

    skyocence's picture

    Not feeling this queen...

...one bit.  Evan's acting is just so so cringe-worthy.  I just can't stand it.  In fact, the last few episodes seem to have lost their shine - but maybe that part is just me.

Instead of focusing on the Queen as the source of a lesbian relationship, I think they should turn to Pam.  I would much rather see her entangled in one - she seems much more entertaining.

Sorry, but in my opinion, the Queen needs to die.
