Pop-punk band NOFX writes a song about Tegan and Sara
Alright ladies — gather round. It’s time we form a Militia Etheridge and put the smackdown on some douchey skate-punk rockers. The boys that form the band NOFX have done the unthinkable and attacked our community at its very core — they made a song dissing Tegan and Sara.

Over three silly minutes, NOFX vocalist Fat Mike tells a tale of meeting one of the sisters backstage at a festival in Germany, but not being able to tell which one. After realizing that he's talking with Sara (he heard Tegan was "the cooler one"), he proceeds to completely "creep" her out by asking if she knows where to score some pills or cocaine — and if she's ever engaged in sexual acts with her sister (yuck!).

Wait — “silly”? No, nothing about that sounds silly to me — just disturbing. This sounds like a classic case of a dude getting let down by a lesbian and then lashing out at her by attacking her sexuality. He’s probably most upset that the girls get more panties thrown at them then he does.
Let’s examine some of the lyrics shall we?
I noticed that her hair was longer in the back / I figured that’s because she’s Canadian / That’s why I was surprised when she told me she was fully lesbian.
Since when did Canada turn into the land of the shlong (shorter in the front longer in the back) haircut people? Why was this Fat Mike guy surprised she was a lesbian? Is it the Canadian aspect or the shlong hair that blew his mind?
Fat Mike
The next verse is just as terrible:
I told her I was a big fan of her band / she asked me if I had a favorite song / I admitted I had never actually heard them but I like k.d. lang.
Easy there tiger — you guys are like the Weird Al of punk.
Maybe I just pissed her off when I asked her if her sister and her had ever had a threesome / Where they both ganged up on one girl / A fourgy or a five-some. Do they think strap-ons are groovy?
I’m sure those boys were peeing their underoos over that one! Now, if this actually happened I don’t know how either one of the Quin twins could have resisted giving his nads a healthy dose of hurt. There is something deeply disturbing about this song and the way it aims to poke fun at the lesbian community in general and more personally Tegan and Sara. This is the type of song that frat boys will play, not because it’s actually good (it sounds like a Blink 182 cover band reading out of a sixth grade slam book) but because somehow it makes them feel like more of a man.
Tegan tweeted a response to the press the song has been receiving:
nofx + t/s = lots of email/texts/blogs/phone calls. i think punk in drublic is a great record. we r lesbians. sara was creeped. i AM cooler.
Sounds like they aren't taking this too seriously.
I’d like to say that NOFX felt the need to make this song in order to be deemed somewhat “relevant." Most '80s bands would be happy to be playing the bar and bat mitzvah circuit these days but these guys are on the Warped Tour. They’ve sold over six million albums and haven’t relied on much press to get them there. They’ve also been very active in opposing George W. Bush while he was in the White House and consider themselves leftists.
I’d love to give them the benefit of the doubt but songs like this aren’t funny, cute or helping break down walls. Of course, I’ve been called a “Sensitive Sally” on more than one occasion — so maybe I’m taking this too personally. What do you think? Should we raise the pitchforks or should I just grab some bon bons, watch Steel Magnolias and take a deep breath?

umm...
Wow.
That was pretty immature. But Im glad Tegan and Sara arent uptight. Theyre just awesome.
i can't believe he said
i can't believe he said those things about my dear Sara!
what an a$$hole. i hope someone kicks him in the genitals.
whats with guys making fun 'women who love women?' eminiem, usher, now this? whats so funny about it? as tegan says "some people are gay, get over it!" move on. maybe gays should sing about straight couples in a "fun" way? ha.
some people are gay, get over it
creeping out sara
uh, I'm sure I'd creep Sara out too. I'm one of those stalkers in my mid-20s who can't blame my obsession on teenage hormones.
I first saw it on Spin - I was offended for a few minutes, then I couldn't be bothered, and now I'm not offended. I've never heard of NOFX (you try living halfway across the world from America!) but the song sounds like they're taking the piss out of themselves, of homophobes, of idiots who think all lesbian sisters engage in incest. BUT, I can absolutely get why people are offended and I'm not going to try to convert anyone to my views. I get offended about things (like O'Donnell's "ching chong" bullpucky a while back) that others don't.
Now if you'll excuse me, I'll be getting back to daydreaming and staring at pictures and listening to my future wife half-lisp through her adorable mouth full of teeth. Not to mention the fact that I'm right now wearing her face on my midsection. Have I said yet that I'd totally creep Sara out as well?
lol
"Now if you'll excuse me, I'll be getting back to daydreaming and staring at pictures and listening to my future wife half-lisp through her adorable mouth full of teeth. Not to mention the fact that I'm right now wearing her face on my midsection. Have I said yet that I'd totally creep Sara out as well?"
This made me lol. You know, I seem to have developed the half lisp as a subconscious response to watching so many interviews and youtube videos. I think that'd totally creep out Sara!
Oh and I also don't see it as a dis song. I listened to it before the spin article and it amused me. Like others have said it seems like he's poking fun at himself for being an asshole more than anything.
*cough*
uh, Sara, if you're out there reading this, I totally didn't mean it. I'm a totally normal 24 year old grad student with an intense focus on my work. I, uh, totally don't have your face on my desktop. or on my phone. or my stomach. and uh, I just totally made that lisp thing up on the spot. Do you really have a lisp? what a coincidence!
Truthfully though, if I were Sara, I'd be a lot more creeped out by her crazed fanbase than a one-off song obviously meant to be provocative. In fact, I creep myself out with how creepily in crush I am.
they always handle things like this
tegannn <3
I wouldn't see any problem with the song if it weren't for the line about the threesome or whatever, that's just disturbing and fucked up.
NOFX love gays
Reactions = more power to them
I wouldn't worry too much about this one. Plus, T&S can take care of themselves, not worried for one second. I agree with the Gal that said that the eminem "we made you" should raise more hell than this NOFX attempt to controversy. Who knew NOFX were still making music anyways? Now everybody does... hence the purpose of these oh-so-original lyrics! Chillax ladies. Not worth the saliva, sweat or time. They'll crawl back in their holes as soon as this will be over.

this
is the dumbest thing i'll read all day....
way to get all worked up over a band you apparently know nothing about...
and for the record (as a canadian) the 'schlong'??? here we call it hockey hair....
okay...
Yeah, maybe the song was a lil iffy....but is everyone forgetting their song Re-gaining Unconsciousness? With lyrics like these.....
"Then they shooed away the bums,
Then they beat and bashed the queers,
Turned away asylum-seekers,
Fed us suspicions and fears.
We didnt raise our voice,
We didnt make a fuss.
Its funny there was no one left to notice
When they came for us.
Looks like witches are in season,
You better fly your flag and be aware
Of anyone who might fit the description,
Diversity is now our biggest fear."
OH Yeah, that's right, people are quick to forget these things.....
Love these lyrics! :D
Love these lyrics! :D
Homosexuality is a choice... like cancer.
Love NOFX
well hon
Maybe the thing to get worked up about is that not everyone understands that they're joking. So part of my point is that while NOFX may not mean it - their song will most likely be used by stupid frat boys who aren't listening to it as a joke. And admittedly I don't listen to their music - I'd rather have Hot Chip or T&S on my headphones.
Hockey hair, shlongs, mullets the list goes on.
I think it's quite obvious
I think it's quite obvious they're joking. NOFX has always been allies to the gays. If stupid frat boys don't get that it's a joke song that's not the fault of the band, it's the idiocy of the people who took it as a diss song. If anything the song is a T&S tribute and a diss of the idiots who make themselves look like assholes in front of them.
On the side note, I didn't find the eminem song offensive either. Jokes are jokes, nothing to get worked up about.
Homosexuality is a choice... like cancer.
Attention Whores
yeah i know^. i
yeah i know^.
i noticed she's likes that saying. lol..ive heard her say it a few times.
who cares...
Seriously.....it's NOFX!!!!!!
Have you listened to their other songs?
Why are so many people on this site so uptight?
...
I'm not sure that "uptight" is really the right adjective here...
I think that maybe some people are just predestined to see things in a more infrared light than those who tend to lean towards viewing in black and white...
It's not "uptight" to look a little bit beneath the surface, it's just realistic.
"For, Heaven knows why, just as we have lost faith in human intercourse some random collection of barns and trees or a haystack and a wagon presents us with so perfect a symbol of what is unattainable that we begin the search again."
...
oh lord...
Again, it's NOFX...try listening to their other songs
They poke fun at everything
...
I still think that until everyone is viewed as equal there are jokes that are dangerous to make because there'll be people out there who use them as justification of their assholic behavior.
I never said I believe that NOFX meant any harm, but I do think that they need to be a little bit more responsible by stating their intentions instead of letting everyone draw their own conclusions and fuelling another 17 year old boy to speak out on any invasive inquiry he may have when encountering a random lesbian who isn't interested.
Just saying.
"For, Heaven knows why, just as we have lost faith in human intercourse some random collection of barns and trees or a haystack and a wagon presents us with so perfect a symbol of what is unattainable that we begin the search again." <
...
wow..okay...
I don't think every song and every joke needs to have a disclaimer..
...
Neither do I. But the ones involving minorities subject to radical discrimination should be delivered with a little more consideration.
"For, Heaven knows why, just as we have lost faith in human intercourse some random collection of barns and trees or a haystack and a wagon presents us with so perfect a symbol of what is unattainable that we begin the search again." <
It's articles like this and
It's articles like this and arguments like yours that make people think lesbians are boring and humourless.
...
If caring about the progress of our society makes me "boring and humourless" then I'll take it, thanks. It's better than not giving a damn that my own community is constantly shit on.
"For, Heaven knows why, just as we have lost faith in human intercourse some random collection of barns and trees or a haystack and a wagon presents us with so perfect a symbol of what is unattainable that we begin the search again." <
why won't this site EVER let
=/
When I read this article I thought that it was a stupid song done by a few idiots. But reading the letter of the song, fodder that probably is not so offensive as some people may believe. Besides, if t&s dont seem to care, why so much trouble?
Why the flipping heck...
Do people assume that gay twin sisters are incestuous? Or gay siblings at all. Or that gay people automatically lust after their same-sex siblings. I mean, really. By the same logic, once straight people hit puberty, they must automatically start hitting on their sisters or brothers. Have they never heard of the Westermarck effect? I've got two sisters, and they are lovely people, but the idea of cracking onto either one of them is the most revolting thing in the world.
I guess people think gay people must be secretly in love with themselves or something, and that they must try to indulge that fantasy by sleeping with people of the same sex - which, naturally, would extend to siblings, since they would share a hefty chunk of the same DNA. I mean, think of all those songs and stories about lesbians that say that kissing a girl is "just like kissing myself" (I won't mention the fact that in stories, when girls kiss, all they ever seem to notice is what flavour lip gloss the other girl is wearing - what the hell is THAT about?) That whole gay-people-must-be-in-love-with-themselves thing actually makes very little sense. What about all the gay people who date, sleep with and/or enter into relationships with people who are their polar opposites? I mean, my girlfriend is a different race, a different build, but most importantly a different PERSON to me, so kissing her isn't at all like kissing me. One person of the same sex isn't necessarily interchangeable with another, even if they are siblings!
seems
uh, way to combat the
uh, way to combat the man-hating, sticks-up-their-asses lesbian stereotype... who the hell cares? it's just a joke, not "an attack on our community". worry about hate crimes and the fact that >90% of the states in this country don't let members of "our community" marry each other.
also, not gonna lie, tegan and sara incest would be kind of hot.
...
...wow.
And, also, ew.
"For, Heaven knows why, just as we have lost faith in human intercourse some random collection of barns and trees or a haystack and a wagon presents us with so perfect a symbol of what is unattainable that we begin the search again." <
Great photo.
That picture of Tegan and Sara matches the expression of many people who are shocked by the incident.

Wow there's a whole lot of
Wow there's a whole lot of anger here.
I heard this song only a week ago, but I rather liked it. I wasn't really sure at first how to take it, whether they were being homophobic pricks or just a bit idiotic. But I think it seems more like the guy's realised he's said too much and creeped out sara, rather than him just being a douche for the fun of it.

I'm dedicating this next song, by the way, both to my grandfather and his pursuit of sexual release ~ SKQ
*Shrugs*
In my opinion, it's just NOFX being NOFX.
I like NOFX and I like Tegan and Sara, so, I'm going to remain indifferent to this one. It just.. doesn't come across as that big of a deal to me though. Maybe it's because Tegan is taking it lightheartedly. (More than likely the way it was intended)
It's NOFX, they poke fun at
It's NOFX, they poke fun at people in their punk elementary way. The tone of the song allows you to infer it's not serious. I personally laughed when I heard it. It's cute and I'm pretty sure Tegan and Sara don't see it as big of a deal as most of you but hey we're all entitled to our own feelings and opinions.
Tegan and sara should do a response song, that would be equally if not more hilarious; making jokes about Fat Mike (seems easy enough). This is not one of their (NOFX) political-let's-raise-hell-and-notice-what-a-crappy-country-we-live-in songs, its a comedic break, something we all need.
So yes, "sensative Sally," grab those bon bons, take in a few deep breaths and click on Steel Magnolia's.
hahaha I thought it was
hahaha I thought it was funny anyways..
And really, if Tegan and Sara themselves aren't taking offense to it, I don't quite see why I should.
hahah, I love Tegan's twitter response
silly stuff
snooore
Fat Mike is a genius, I'm sorry. But LOOK. You're ALL talking about it. Even people who have never heard of NoFX are talking about them and are going to look them up now. How's that for exposure? It's genius, is what it is.
I love Fat Mike, NoFX and all their douchiness. MY VAGIIIINA HAS LOTS OF EXTRA SKIIIN. Great, I tell you.
hold your pitchforks
Complacency
Yeah, makin' fun of the gays...no big.
Until an 11 year old hangs himself.
I'll laugh at it when gay kids stop dying.
huh
.Fat Mike ? how can anyone take anything seriously.when its coming from someone called fat mike:S .
ALSO.
Degradation Vs Violence
Degradation and humilation...the affects are just as bad. No one has to say "KILL THEM". There is such a thing as unintended consequences...which are usually caused by people who are naive and live in a bubble.
The reality is gay kids are killing themselves because of stupid, irresponsible fuckheads saying stupid shit.
And there are kids killing gay kids because of stupid, irresponsible fuckheads saying stupid shit.
Not everyone is nice, not everyone who listens to them is nice...and certainly not everyone who listens them is smart. An 11 year old hung himself with an electrical cord. A 15 year old shot a gay kid in the head in the middle of class. The former didn't think he deserved to live, the latter didn't think that gay kid was worthy of living. "KILL THEM" was not the message that drove it...it was messages of humiliation and degradation of gay people.
Wait a minute...
Ok, I actually had to create an account and post this.
I'm 34 and I've listened to NOFX since I managed to get a hold of my first
bootleg tape of them when I was 15.
The keyboard player of NOFX is gay and Fat Mike has been Very rudely loud
in defending gay rights since the early 80's.
He wrote a song Blasting Jamaica and Jamaican culture as homophobic in the
song "Jamaica is ok, if you're a homophobe".
When they started out they wrote a song bashing vegitarians, but when he got
a bit older, he became a vegan "It has to do with living a cruelty free existance".
They have a song called "You're wrong" which blasts pretty much everything wrong
with society including once again, homophobia.
The songs Liza, Louise, and Liza & Louise are based on characters from a Lesbian
author in San Fransisco. The songs are rude, crass etc. But if you put aside the cursing they are absolutly pro-gay songs. The following is from Liza and Louise:
Liza's had enough of men
She says, she won't get burnt again
She says, they don't know how to fuck
Her last boyfriend, the shmuck
Shared with her a nice disease
Kept her passive, on her knees
'Til one day she took his car
And drove it to the city
Liza had put down a few
When she met this girl named Lou
Who convinced her to go home with her
She said, "My name's Louise
Now will you take off my clothes please?
I want to take you to the moon and back
So get on your back."
(and in the end)
But she had never even seen the door
Into the world of pleasures of the flesh
She felt just like 16
And her life before now was a dream
Or even a nightmare that's over and done
Just like warm healing rays
Shining from the sun
They make her beam
They make her laugh
They make her dance
She was happy for the first time
And you know she wanted more
Trust me, this song was not meant as an "attack" on Tegan & Sara. NOFX does have
a couple of "attack" songs as well as lyrics that are meant as an attack like :
"You're wrong for wearing fur and not hating Ann Coulter; cause she's a cu*ted-cu*t!"
Anyway, I just wanted to clear it up a bit. People can be offended by the language
they use etc. In fact, most of the language they use is meant to offend. They're an
independant punk band with no record lable to "filter" what they say or do.
But don't try and say that they did this to offend gay people in some way; they've been
brutally vocal against any type of homophobic discrimination since before Tegan & Sara
were born. Fat mike may be crass, rude etc. but he is absolutly one of the 'good guys' when it comes to gay rights or rather discrimination there of.
Unintended Consequences
R teh opposite of intentional consequences.
My previous post had more cursing in it, but I filtered it a bit...all on my own...'cause I is an adult...sometimes.
I'm also a total asshole...sometime. Sorry if I don't roll over and say "oh that's okay" when someone who's gay friendly suddenly has the urge to shit gay stereotypes. I also heard Jerry Lewis is a friend to disabled persons.
Teh Lyrics
I was backstage at a festival in Germany
Talking to a cute, fair skinned brunette
I asked her if she wanted to have a beer
and if she liked our set
I noticed that her hair was longer in the back
I figured that's cuz she's canadian
That's why I was surprised when she told me she was fully lesbian
That's when I realized it was Sara
or maybe it was Tegan
I'm pretty sure that it was Sara
Cuz Johnny Samson said she was the cool one
I told her that I was a big fan of her band
She asked me if I had a favorite song
I admitted that I never actually heard them
But I like K.D. Lang
I told her this Jew knows about the Junos
and how they got robbed three times in a row
And then I asked her if she knew of anyone who's selling pills or blow
That's when I creeped out Sara
Or maybe I just pissed her
off when I asked her if her sister
And her had ever had a threesome
Where they both ganged up on one girl
A fourgy or a fivesome
Do they think strapons are groovy
And had they ever seen the movie
"Bound", and did they like Jenifer Tilly
Did they like Jennifer Tilly
Sara said she
Preferred Gina Gershon
Angelina Jolie
In a "Gia" movie
That was on HBO
And "If these walls could talk"
Made Tegan cry alot
After that I almost forgot what she said
That's the problem with Diazepam
So many things I don't remember
But I got a sinking feeling
It's not that i'm a clairvoyant
But I think I creeped out Sara
I was creeping out on Sara
I hope it wasn't Tegan
Cuz Skiba said she is the cooler one
give up
What a silly song =P
you have no idea.....
lol!
fisrt, Tegan and Sara are crap..... their music is terrible. i'm all for what they stand for and represent but musicaly they suck.
NOFX are veterans of the music industry, they have the right to 'diss' whom ever they like, its what they do and they do it well!
Second, the lyrics in no way shape or form have any negative tone to the lesbian community. You dont know NOFX, he's clearly taking the piss out of himself and its funny! This band have the up most respect of the gay community and have been fighting the good fight since before most of you where born.
if you honestly get offended by this then ha! you need to develop a sense of hummor. Dont get all high and mighty about lyrics you dont understand.
and anyway by the sounds of it Sara didnt really give a fuck which is what you should do.
Oh man...
Like an above poster, I'm 36 and had to create an account for this as well. I've been listening to NOFX since I was in my early 20's.
Anybody who thinks this is a "diss", obviously does not know NOFX. If NOFX wanted to diss Tegan and Sara, the song would be faster, more aggressive, and filled with profanity. This is obviously a joke song, and if anything Fat Mike is making fun of himself for being an idiot. The song mentions how he knows/thinks they got screwed at the Junos, not that they are a terrible band. If Fat Mike didn't like T&S, he would say they suck. That's it.
And for the person who thinks these songs will drive young gay people to kill themselves, uh no. Pretty much the only people who listen to NOFX are long-time listeners, and know what the band is about. They don't make videos. They don't get radio-airplay. Right wing/nazi/homophobes don't listen to their music because NOFX is so anti-those types of movements. If somebody latches onto this song as an anti-gay flag, then they are insane. That's like saying Bitch and Animal make a song about how great it is to be a Republican, and people are all like "they are Republican now? They voted for Bush? WTF? Young Republicans are going to use this song as a flag!".
No. Young Republicans don't listen to B&A, and never would no matter what. And Young Democrats wouldn't listen to it, question their entire being, and turn conservative...because they know B&A aren't serious.
