Pop-punk band NOFX writes a song about Tegan and Sara

Alright ladies — gather round. It’s time we form a Militia Etheridge and put the smackdown on some douchey skate-punk rockers. The boys that form the band NOFX have done the unthinkable and attacked our community at its very core — they made a song dissing Tegan and Sara.

Spin.com’s Larry Fitzmaurice writes:

Over three silly minutes, NOFX vocalist Fat Mike tells a tale of meeting one of the sisters backstage at a festival in Germany, but not being able to tell which one. After realizing that he's talking with Sara (he heard Tegan was "the cooler one"), he proceeds to completely "creep" her out by asking if she knows where to score some pills or cocaine — and if she's ever engaged in sexual acts with her sister (yuck!).

Wait — “silly”? No, nothing about that sounds silly to me — just disturbing. This sounds like a classic case of a dude getting let down by a lesbian and then lashing out at her by attacking her sexuality. He’s probably most upset that the girls get more panties thrown at them then he does.

Let’s examine some of the lyrics shall we?

I noticed that her hair was longer in the back / I figured that’s because she’s Canadian / That’s why I was surprised when she told me she was fully lesbian.

Since when did Canada turn into the land of the shlong (shorter in the front longer in the back) haircut people? Why was this Fat Mike guy surprised she was a lesbian? Is it the Canadian aspect or the shlong hair that blew his mind?

Fat Mike

The next verse is just as terrible:

I told her I was a big fan of her band / she asked me if I had a favorite song / I admitted I had never actually heard them but I like k.d. lang.

Easy there tiger — you guys are like the Weird Al of punk.

Maybe I just pissed her off when I asked her if her sister and her had ever had a threesome / Where they both ganged up on one girl / A fourgy or a five-some. Do they think strap-ons are groovy?

I’m sure those boys were peeing their underoos over that one! Now, if this actually happened I don’t know how either one of the Quin twins could have resisted giving his nads a healthy dose of hurt. There is something deeply disturbing about this song and the way it aims to poke fun at the lesbian community in general and more personally Tegan and Sara. This is the type of song that frat boys will play, not because it’s actually good (it sounds like a Blink 182 cover band reading out of a sixth grade slam book) but because somehow it makes them feel like more of a man.

Tegan tweeted a response to the press the song has been receiving:

nofx + t/s = lots of email/texts/blogs/phone calls. i think punk in drublic is a great record. we r lesbians. sara was creeped. i AM cooler.

Sounds like they aren't taking this too seriously.

I’d like to say that NOFX felt the need to make this song in order to be deemed somewhat “relevant." Most '80s bands would be happy to be playing the bar and bat mitzvah circuit these days but these guys are on the Warped Tour. They’ve sold over six million albums and haven’t relied on much press to get them there. They’ve also been very active in opposing George W. Bush while he was in the White House and consider themselves leftists.

I’d love to give them the benefit of the doubt but songs like this aren’t funny, cute or helping break down walls. Of course, I’ve been called a “Sensitive Sally” on more than one occasion — so maybe I’m taking this too personally. What do you think? Should we raise the pitchforks or should I just grab some bon bons, watch Steel Magnolias and take a deep breath?

    Liza & Louise

NOFX is still around and making records? haha! That offends me. Fat Mike is a total douche, but NOFX has been obsessed with lesbians since the early 90s. This is not their first lesbian themed song.

Try looking up "Liza and Louise," which was released in 1992. I have this 7" and it was one of my FAVORITES when I was younger. (though at the time I didn't realize why. Duh)

    NOFX

    Sample lyrics:

Liza had put down a few /When she met this girl named Lou/ Who convinced her to go home with her/She said, "My name's Louise/Now will you take off your clothes please?/I want to take you to the moon and back/So get on your back."/With a flick of the tongue/She made her scream/She made her laugh/ She made her dance/She was happy for the first time/And you know she wanted more

Now with her legs spread wider/She needed to have Louise inside her/She said, "I'll never forget the first time You kissed me/now I want you to fist me."

Oh hell,  I still love that song!

But yeah..Fat Mike is a douche and this has always been a joke band.

    Too sensitive

The media keep calling this a diss song, but it's not much of a diss. It's funny. Tongue-in-cheek and definitely not to be taken seriously.

This kind of reaction from our community will get the band more headlines and attention than they probably deserve.

    Tegan's Tweet of Apathy

I think that the lyrics, while raunchy and icky, don't really demean Tegan and Sara. It really seems to be poking more fun at the idiot questions he asks. Whether or not they're trying to make a statement about Ugly Frat Boy mentality is giving them a bit too much credit, but I think that taking our cue from Tegan might be the best in this instance.

    Ha! I love "Militia Etheridge".

    ClaireUK's picture

    Not cool!

I read Tegan's tweet earlier today and had no clue what she was on about (did make me laugh though) so it's good to now know what she was referencing.

However, on the flipside it's not good to know what she was referencing because this makes me just a little bit mad! The song is NOT clever, the lyrics are CRAP and YOU DON'T BLOODY DISS TEGAN AND SARA!!!

Way to make yourself a legion of enemies in 3 minutes dude!

    clairey's picture

    it's NOFX

It's just a stupid joke, but come on, it's NOFX, they say a whole bunch of shit, and if you take it seriously, you'd be banging your head over nothing. The only thing annoying i see is that line about the threesomes and bla bla, and any creepy guy would say that. Coming from a guy that presents himself with "My name is Fat Mike, I'm obsessed with big lesbians", I am not really shocked. Have you ever heard "Liza & Louise" or "Liza", or "Louise"?? Guy clearly wants to be a lesbian:)

As an uber-huge fan of Tegan

As an uber-huge fan of Tegan and Sara, I laughed hilariously at this song. You have to take it with a grain of salt. I think they're fans of T&S and it was homage-ish to them, but they did it in a stupid way.

Tegan was definitely not offended. I follow her on Twitter and she definitely didn't seem offended, I like the fact that she found the record to be "great." I think they're making fun of all the people who interview the twins and ask if they ever make out (which as a fan of T&S, they've complained about, many a time). They're just being stupid, and hey, it's more recognition for Tegan and Sara.

I definitely thought it was just a stupidly amusing song, and no punk men are gonna be "sensitive" about lesbian-ism. I'm so glad that Tegan found it amusing rather than offensive.

    Again, here is Tegan's tweet:

nofx + t/s = lots of email/texts/blogs/phone calls. i think punk in drublic is a great record. we r lesbians. sara was creeped. i AM cooler.

    Psychopractor's picture

    Same here

Good to know I wasn't the only huge T&S fan who laughed at this. Its a dumb song, like most skate punk. If they don't care, then I shouldn't care. I'm sure if they were offended, they would say so. They never have trouble expressing their opinions (stupid fan @ Indianapolis anyone?)

But, I do agree that some parts were almost over the line. Incest is never funny, just gross.

    suchapbear's picture

    Ehh

I always wonder how to go about these things. My coworker and I were just discussing the Eminem song as well, and trying to decide which way to go with it.

I concluded that music will always be taken one way or another. If some one is naive enough to listen to that NOFX or eminem song and think it is funny to ask a lesbian if they have slept with their sister, or ask a lez to go back to men, they were probably that ignorant long before the song came along.

    Banany's picture

    WTF??

lol I heard this song and peed myself, I thought it was funny.. and I'm REALLY gay and a HUGE Tegan and Sara fan. I don't see how its a diss song.. Its more making fun of him then them, if anything hes called them attractive and cool in the song... hes making fun of himself here I thought it was pretty self deprecating. Hes saying he creeped her out.. so HE was being weird and awkward and admiting to it.. lol its just hard for me to take this seriously because it isnt supose to be taken seriously! its NOFX! :P
    to_the_east's picture

    This is no surprise.

This is no surprise.  Didn't they write a song years ago dissing Kathleen Hannah?  I think it was called "Kill Rock Stars", which prompted the awesome Le Tigre song "Deceptacon".
    LiveLIfe28's picture

    well...

Honestly I took it as a joke and that NOFX was making fun of themselves; not Sara nor Tegan.  Obviously T&S are not upset about it.  Personally i thought it was funny cause Fat Mike made himself look like a real jackass and I can totally see the face Sara would have been giving him.  Plus it seemed like he was  fan of theirs and that the joke of not knowing if he was talking to Sara or Tegan was a joke focused more about ppl who still confuse them. Like uninformed ill prepared journalists.  Overall I just thought it was funny but not making fun of Sara nor Tegan.

And yes I'm a huge fan of theirs too!

maybe offensive out of context, but NOFX are good guys

IMO, anyway.  They don't take anyone (including themselves) seriously but they are also on the front lines educating apathetic punker kids about voting and stuff, taking a vocal and progressive stand on issues.  I sincerely doubt they are in any way homophobic toward Tegan & Sara or any queer folks

As a punk rock lovin' queer, I really wish the punk scene was more women- and queer-friendly, but it's a 2-way street.

    Writing style

Yeah, it's just NOFX's style. No topic is really off limits to them and theyre not exactly the most serious song-writers to ever pick up a guitar. I feel like Fat Mike and the rest of the guys just got bored one day and were like 'lets write a song about those lez sisters!' and then proceeded to write Creeping Out Sara.

And according to the person who posted Tegan's twitter thing-y, she obviously wasn't upset about it. It's just how NOFX does things.

    Katpod's picture

    Why you should be pissed

Alright, I understand why people are trying to shrug this off and not be upset by it. It takes a lot of energy if you choose to get worked up by every little annoying thing straight people say about gays. Sometimes I think to myself that if I had my choice, straight people would be prohibited under all circumstances to make any remarks, positive or negative, about what they think they know about being gay. Anyway, we don't live in that world I guess, and so sometimes people say wonderful things but a lot of the times you get shit like this from people who don't have the intelligence to realize that what they're saying is ignorant and offensive. Anyway, there's two reason why this particular song is worthy of being pissed about.

Reason 1) Ever been to a party where you're just trying to enjoy yourself despite the fact that you're the only lesbian amongst a crowd of heterosexuals who are flirting and eyeing eachother all night? Then you know about the inevitable guy that comes up and starts talking to you, the inevitable "yeah I'm a lesbian" and the subsequent barrage of invasive and obnoxious questions. "So, you don't like guys at all? Like...at all?", "well, if you could sleep with any guy here, who would it be?", "You don't look like a lesbian. I thought all lesbians tried to look like dudes", "So...you don't like guys at all...like...at all?", "How do you guys have sex?" ,"So how many girls have you had sex with?", "would you ever have a threesome with a guy?"

In essence, NOFX are putting that whole annoying and offensive bullshit into song form. They're basically admitting it, without even knowing, that yes they are "that guy".

Reason 2) Imagine these lyrics if say NOFX met Chris Rock: "I told him I was a big fan / He asked me if I had a favorite movie / I admitted I had never actually heard of him but I like will smith.

Maybe I just pissed him off when I asked him (insert sexual stereotype about black men here, cause I'm just not gonna go there)

Somehow I don't think that shit would be seen as just harmless fun. We're putting up with a lot of bullshit from the entertainment industry right now trying to make a joke out of us and stereotypes about us. It's not just isolated incidents at this point, it's downright trendy to open your mouth and say something insulting about us these days. All I've got to say is I'm done smiling politely and shrugging it off. I'm not an alien, I'm just a normal person and I don't appreciate being talked about like we're some kind of fascinating creature for straight people to giggle about amongst themselves.

That's not to say however that you should walk around being angry about this all the time. But when you encounter these things in your daily life, don't passively let it slide. Let people know that you don't appreciate being subjected to these things and let them know why.

    Tam G's picture

    but...

"They're basically admitting it, without even knowing, that yes they are "that guy"."

I get your point but why are you, and everyone else who's so upset, assuming that they are that guy and not satirizing that guy?

Clearly I have no idea which side they fall on but Fat Mike has proven himself pretty insightful and bright in the past. The assumumption is that he must be a 'typical straight guy' with 'typical straight guy' dumb thoughts but to me, it makes a lot more sense that it's supposed to show the offensive of such comments. But hey, I could totally be wrong.

    Hype_'s picture

    Atleast they did their research

    The lyrics (credit dotca):

I was backstage at a festival in Germany
Talking to a cute, fair skinned brunette
I asked her if she wanted to have a beer
and if she liked our set
I noticed that her hair was longer in the back
    I figured that's cuz she's canadian
That's why I was surprised when she told me she was fully lesbian

That's when I realized it was Sara
    or maybe it was Tegan
I'm pretty sure that it was Sara
Cuz Johnny Samson said she was the cool one
I told her that I was a big fan of her band
She asked me if I had a favorite song
I admitted that I never actually heard them
    But I like K.D. Lang
I told her this Jew knows about the Junos
and how they got robbed three times in a row
And then I asked her if she knew of anyone who's selling pills or blow

That's when I creeped out Sara
Or maybe I just pissed her
off when I asked her if her sister
And her had ever had a threesome
Where they both ganged up on one girl
    A fourgy or a fivesome
Do they think strapons are groovy
And had they ever seen the movie
"Bound", and did they like Jenifer Tilly
    Did they like Jennifer Tilly

    Sara said she
    Preferred Gina Gershon
    Angelina Jolie
    In a "Gia" movie
    That was on HBO
And "If these walls could talk"
    Made Tegan cry alot
After that I almost forgot what she said

    That's the problem with Diazepam
So many things I don't remember
But I got a sinking feeling
    It's not that i'm a clairvoyant
But I think I creeped out Sara
I was creeping out on Sara
    I hope it wasn't Tegan
Cuz Skiba said she is the cooler one

I am a total T + S fan but I can step back and see this is context - another NOFX song. And the song sounds like a joke between friends. And it's more about himself speaking before thinking because of the drugs and then regretting freaking her out. Being offended is what gives it power :)

It also sounds like it's a true story as Tegan and Sara tell a story in their onstage banter about this happening to them at a music festival.

    Chill Out

This is nothing to get worked up over. It's not a dis to Tegan and Sara. It's a song about a drug addict. That's all it is. NOFX met Tegan and Sara. Gay jokes and songs and all of the things you find offensive, I think are absolutely hilarious! Just chill.

I'm actually a fan of NOFX records. They make fun of everyone and everything, satirize shamelessly, and they're great live. This isn't the first time they've discussed lesbians in their songs, and as for maturity, it's a hit or miss with most of their songs.

besides, this song should be taken with a grain of salt. It's a bit like me, an Asian, snapping at every mildly racist joke or parody with vehement accusations of discrimination. What is awfully more disturbing are those so-called 'more credible' statements released by religious leaders and politicians which slam the gay community.

    They love the gays

I haven't heard the song yet, but I have listened to this band for a long time and know they are very liberal and have been outspoken about GLBT equality.I saw them play once at a Rock Against Bush concert. The band said something about gay people. A wingnut in the crowd said that gay guys were gross but that lesbians were hot. Fat Mike (lead singer) let into the guy over the mic about how ignorant that was and how people like him were what's wrong with this country. He stood up for our community without a second thought. That's why I do not believe that they would ever intentionally mean harm to our community.
    Tam G's picture

    definitely

Exactly! The last thing NOFX has ever been is homophobic and I'm honestly kind of frustrated that they're being accused of such. It just makes us look like we can't take a joke or understand satire.

And no, what Eminem does is not satire.

Gay support in NOFX lyrics from their last album:

    i havent heard the song.

i havent heard the song. but i really hope that (as some people have suggested) it was meant more for fun than for actual offense. despite it obviously being poor taste. It would surprise me to hear them beong truly awful to the LBGT community after the underoath debacle...

let me explain. i don't know FULL details but this is what i know: underoath (another band, more emo/screamo) who are  devout christians stated at some point that they dont believe homosexuality is right or normal and that homosexuals must have had some sort of traumatic childhood/molestation/abandoment issues (whatev.) to make us this way. now i hear that this pissed off the guys from NOFX so much so that they started a bit of a band fight over it. i listened to a radio interview that NOFX did here in australia where the guys were saying how stupid they thought the comments by underoath were.

that interview made me really happy and a bit proud that these guys would publicly make a show of defending the GLBT community. i really hope they havent slipped backwards? i hope that they are just poor at making jokes...

    A***da's picture

    ...

I didn't know that that kind of haircut was called "shlong..."

    =/

As for the song... the way I see it is that any joke that has to play off of some type of stereotype or misconception in order to be thought funny is harmful under the surface, no matter how funny it is thought to be...

I guess that a lot of people are blowing off things like this because they're playful...

...but until total understanding is the norm, it's going to be dangerous to poke fun at minorities and act in an ethnocentric way  because there are going to be people out there who take things to an extreme and use these sort of displays as an excuse to continue acting thoughtlessly.

Whether it was the intent of the artist or not, it's still their responsibility to say what they mean so that there aren't people out there paying homage to a point of view that the artist doesn't even ascribe to.

    *shrug*

I still think the shlong thing is funny...

    Meh.

I don't think they're really "dissing" T&S here. I actually think the song is funny, albeit rather stupid. Yeah, the incest questions are offensive, but they aren't condoning this line of thinking, they're pointing out that it's gross and creepy. And they aren't bashing the girls, they're making a joke about this dude making an ass of himself when he's high. I don't really find it offensive.

    NOFX = amazing

Don't get pissed at NOFX they're awesome. They make fun of everyone and they love gays. They've always made stupid songs like this.
