New Music Tuesday: 11-24-09Today’s New Music Tuesday post is dedicated to our brothers in arms at AfterElton.com. Why, you ask? Well, because today’s new releases are basically a gay man’s dream. Sure, we can enjoy a lot of the tunes too, but if you look below you’ll see that if you put together a playlist comprised of most of these artists it would most likely be entitled, “Follow the Yellow Brick Road." Shakira — She Wolf (Epic) No one is more surprised than myself when it comes to my top pick of the week. It’s not that I didn’t like Shakira before — her hips don’t lie and they are incredibly easy to look at. It’s just that sometimes when her voice goes to that high semi-nasally place, it makes me uncomfortable. Her latest album, though, is fantastic. There are disco grooves, appearances by Kid Cudi, Lil’ Wayne and Wyclef Jean as well as some major production assistance from Timbaland and Pharrell. Expect a ton of club remixes coming from this album. Lady Gaga — The Fame Monster (Streamline/Interscope) Say what you will about Lady Gaga (even my mom has an opinion about her) the woman has some catchy tunes. I tried to deny her entrance into my ears but then I heard “Paparazzi” and now I can’t stop listening. Her two-disc effort, The Fame and The Fame Monster reminds me of if Madonna put out her Immaculate Collection today: Dance tunes, electro-ballads and intelligent pop-sensibility. Rihanna — Rated R (Def Jam) One of the best things about Rihanna is that she is no stranger to blending genres even if she’s been brought up by rap superstar Jay-Z. It will be interesting to listen to this album, especially since it’s coming after her tumultuous relationship with Holy Hail — Independent Pleasure Club (Adventures Close to Home, Kanine) For a breath of fresh air, nostalgia and new wave goodness check out Holy Hail. Their second full-length album is for lovers and dreamers. If you’re a fan of Tilly and The Wall or The Phenomenal Handclap Band, these kids will be your new bffs. They are so cool, in fact, they are doing a pay what you like (a la Radiohead) option, where profits from their album will benefit Education Through Music. Shout out to Kelis and her freshly released single, "Acapella,"which is so fresh it’s like biting into a York Peppermint Patty. Other notable new releases include, Angie Stone, Adam Lambert, Tom Waits and Susan Boyle. Who are you most excited about listening to this week? Who did I leave off accidentally? Everytime I see or hear that woman, the only thought that comes into my mind is 'Yes.'
I LOVE her music, and I'm esp. grooving to some of her old-skool stuff: 'Ciego, Soromuda' is the jam of all jams and 'No' (although this came later) is one of her best songs ever. She is truly a phenomenal songwriter. The new album is pretty much just a good time thang (and there ain't nothin' wrong with that!), however, her songwriting is truly something.
yes!
When she did 'Ciego, Soromuda' for mtv unplugged way back when...man that was flippin amazing also 'ojos asi'......she is truly great.
Just Gaga
Dear AE, Please
Dear AE,
Please please do a full review of The Fame Monster! I'm loving it right now, except for the censored lyrics. So Happy I Could Die and Dance in the Dark are particularly relevant for this site.
:)
i love this new music tuesday!
Kelis' new song is where it's at - it's amazing!! bought the fame monster today as well and i looove it, gaga is genius. Shakira's new song is awesome as well. Plus, she's smoking hot which never hurt anyone...
dunno about Rihanna though - her new song is a bit depressing...but then again who can blame her
Wow.
I never found Shakira attractive until now?
She looks amazing ;)
Although...
I am excited for Lady Gaga and Shakira's new album, I have to say I've started to get into a lot more local bands etc and by god is there some talent out there. Infact my friends band has just released their first single through Itunes and I went to the single launch which was crazy fun so I can only imagine what these guys who are already famous do for their album launches! If anyone fancies giving the band some support check them out on myspace under www.myspace.com/mindsetscotland
I am not really feeling Rhianna's album this time round. Girl has lost her game a bit in my opinion.
x
Just throwing it out there:
Shakira
Shakira = " H.O.T "
~live - love - laugh~
hmmm
i love phenomenal handclap band i guess i'll check out that band.
thanks
Amazing
Love all the music reviews!!!!!!!!!!!!
Favourite Column......
Rihanna=LOVE
This CD is so fVcking epic. It's dark, even the jumpy tracks. It kind of makes me depressed but I can't stop listening to it. A few lines in "Te Amo" hurt my heart to hear. And don't even get me started on "Firebomb" cuz it's been on repeat in my head for the past few days.
I guess a bunch of y'all aren't feeling it, but IMO "My December," "808s and Heartbreak," and 'Rated R" are AMAAAAAZZZZZZIIINNNNG. I love it when poppers go dark.
Shaki!!
Could this be the start of Shaki making it into the top 100?? God I hope so. I vote for her every year lol
Personally I was afraid I'd hate the new album and then I was pleasantly surprised. It's 100% Shakified and yet at least 85% mainstream dance/pop without being repetitive and boring. It may be one of the more unique dance albums you'll hear if only for her playful lyrics. The fusion of different cultural sounds all within the genre of techno/synthesizers is pretty dope as well :)
