Ellen Page and Drew Barrymore share their favorite songs

The other day, I was perusing the iTunes homepage when I spotted a celebrity playlist unlike the rest. Usually, there is only one MC narrating their ultimate mixtape but this time there were two. Not just any two — it was Drew Barrymore and Ellen Page who had put one together, together.

Listening to their banter back and forth gave me the giggles and darn it if I didn’t turn red and make my mind wander to some amazing far off places.

The point of the celebrity playlist is to basically show the world what terrible or incredible music taste a certain celeb has. At one point, Drew says, “Ellen’s got great taste and we share a lot in common and yet I feel like I’m always being turned on to new things by her." Oh I bet! I bet you get turned on by new things coming from Ellen (says the devil on my shoulder picturing the two of them back at Drew’s place dressed in their Whip It costumes, throwing kitchen supplies off the counter and getting into a passionate make-out session where the cutting board normally lays).

Wow, that came out of nowhere.

Anywho, I was really rather impressed by the songs they both chose and it only made my love for the both of them grow. Thankfully, Drew decided not to include anything from any of her musician exes (though, a Hole song wouldn’t have necessarily been a bad thing). Ellen gushed about her picks in a fashion I could only imagine her to gush, “It’s one of those songs I’ve been playing and lying on the floor whilst melting into it. I’m a massive fan of Antony and the Johnsons and his voice with this song has just been shattering me right now in the best possible of ways.” I mean, could that be any more Ellen Page-like?

As a master of the mixtape myself, I must say this one really is fantastic and I think most of you will agree after listening. Thankfully, their talk session is free to download but you only get about twenty seconds of each song. Here's their recommended playlist:

Neutral Milk Hotel — "Everything Is"
Antony and the Johnsons — "Crazy in Love"
The Section Quartet — "Time is Running Out"
Emiliana Torrini — "Hold Heart"
Yeah Yeah Yeahs — "Skeletons" (Acoustic Version)
The Walkmen — "Four Provinces"
Missy Elliot feat. Ciara and Fat Man Scoop — "Lose Control"
Sarah Harmer — "Dandelions in Bullet Holes"
Phoenix — "1901"
Joanna Newsom — "Sawdust & Diamonds"

Do you like their tunes?

    Off topic.

I just want to mention: I had seen the movie An American Crime (based on a real crime case) starring Ellen Page. Previously I had felt indifferent toward Ellen Page's acting until I had seen this movie earlier this morning on television. Her acting is fantastic in specific scenes (if you have seen this movie you know what I am talking about); she allowed her vulnerability to shine as well as showing hopelessness. The end. Also Ellen Page and me share a similar quality: we both look very young for our age(s).

    On topic.

I am listening to the Antony and the Johnsons' song "Crazy In Love" right now.

    I saw that movie

That is the first time I saw her in a dramatic role, she is awesome. I definitly agree with you.

...Ellen Page I think Im falling for you even more... Drew, your not far behind. I love the playlist

    Hard Candy

That movie is great but also check out Hard Candy. She is quite unsettling in that. This was pre-Juno and the movie that made me love her. Everyone just jumped on the badwagon after Juno without seeing her in anything else.

    hard candy

she was excellent in hard candy.  really good movie as well.

    RE: Hard Candy

I disagree. This was the first movie I had seen Ellen Page. And I did not like her acting as well as the overall movie, it had tried too hard to explain the movie's plot even though there were a few stand out moments. This is why I was indifferent toward Ellen Page's acting previously.

    i knooow

people jumped on the ellen page bandwagon after Juno, but does anyone remember her in X-Men?

    Nice music taste!

Emiliana Torrini, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, The Walkmen, Phoenix...very nice! I love these two. I couldn't believe a Strokes song was in Whip It, it made me so happy. Jens Lekman too. And The Raveonettes. And Little Joy. Drew has my exact taste in music. I want to marry her.

    I'm listening to it now...

...and one song on Ellen's list is "Trouble," by Cat Stevens, which is one of MY favorite songs, and was in one of my favorite films, Harold and Maude.  When Ellen mentioned this song, and that she loved the movie, I nearly died!  Died, I tell you!  Also, the chick on the harp, Joanna Newsom, is freaking awesome.

    "Hold heart"

Is a beautiful song, if Ellen Page likes Emiliana Torrini, Joanna Newsom and Antony and the Johnsons she´s just perfect for me.

    Meh

You know saying someone's taste in music is terrible or incredible is really all subjective at the end of the day. For example, I hate most of the musicians discussed on this site from day to day. And I'm probably the only lesbian on the planet who could care less about Tegan and Sara's new CD. Of this particular celeb playlist, I liked maybe 3 songs. I wouldn't classify it as fantastic just tolerable or at the very least respectable but that's only my opinion. See what I mean.
    Hornito's picture

    indeed

taste is subjective and beauty is in the eye of the beholder - THANK GOODNESS!

No matter what anyone says (or doesn't say), the are SO together.

And I will definitely check out the music, too :)

    Emiliana

Emiliana Torrini's Hold Heart is my fav from that playlist. They have an interesting selection. I've not heard of most of them.

Emiliana's latest album Me and Armini is bliss! I'll be getting it. She has such a haunting voice.

Thanks Ellen & Drew for introducing us to her.

    Chi CTA

Ok so I was riding the Brown Line to Fullerton when I was reading this article. I started to laugh out loud when reading this article and I'm sure some thought I was crazy. I also love how I always manage to catch up on AE articles while waiting on or riding the CTA. Gotta Love Ellen and Drew:)

    Hornito's picture

    The CTA is the best

For everything. Crazy = best for stories.  If you're 21 or over you should come to 44th Ward for Halloween. I want all my After Ellen Chicago ladies there in costume to help celebrate the Gay New Year (aka Halloween).
    Mariah200610's picture

    Sounds fun

Yeah I just moved here two months ago, so I am still trying to figure out the gay scene here. 44th Ward sounds like fun so I might have to be there:)

Why remake a perfect Muse song?

It's an interesting redo of Muse's "Time Is Running Out" but I don't prefer it over the original.

    MOONLIGHT SONATA!! :D

omg I love Ellen Page even more for choosing Moonlight Sonata! I would do (and still do) listen to it all the time. I just think it's a very sexy song ;)
    Supergirl's picture

    I love these 2...

... and would bet my bottom dollar they're doing it.

    ; )

(I'm not that touch feely with my best friend, even when super drunk.)

Titillation and wishful thinking aside, I love them both - I watch a lot of movies and both actresses have starred in films I rank amongst my favourites. Humour, sincerity, beauty - they both have it in spades.

I hope Cameron isn't jealous of Drew's new relationship though...

    lo siento

It was shortened (I believe) by iTunes according to what they have available to download on their site. I actually tried to attache some downloads and other stuff to my post but I think it's against some rules. Suri Cruise!
